    I have Ubuntu 10.10 and using VirtualBox 3.2. As a Guest OS I have another Ubuntu in the VirtualBox. I am starting Guest Ubuntu automatically using following command once my Host Ubuntu boots: VBoxHeadless -startvm Ubuntu --vrdp on Then I can access to it with ssh or tsclient. Now I need to shutdown automatically Guest Ubuntu once I shutdown my Host Ubuntu. Does anybody know any safe method to automatically shutdown Guest Ubuntu with a command line? I have found out two ways one can shutdown Guest OS but I am not sure whether they are safe or not. Here are they: VBoxManage controlvm Ubuntu acpipowerbutton or VBoxManage controlvm Ubuntu poweroff

  • Webex "Share Application" Feature on 11.04

    Since upgrading to 11.04, when I use WebEx in either Chrome OR Firefox, and select "Share Application" I can click on applications running on my desktop, but they aren't shared. No errors are displayed. This worked fine before I upgraded. I can "Share Desktop" okay, but I'd rather have "Share Application" working. Possibly related: Pandora loads maybe 60%, then stalls out. (But we're talking Java vs Flash, I think ...) Thanks, -danny

  • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

    I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

    I have use Ubuntu 10.04 & 12.04 but my problem is disk space, I just have 4GB of HDD! awesome considering all hardware that exists nowadays! Notebook Asus eeePC 900 with 2Gb of ram, intel inside CPU. So, which is the best OS should I use? I need one that have no problems with compatibily also that's not be so old. I've tried some of lightly versions like Puppy, slax, LPS us army OS, Precise.... BUT I don't like any of them. What do you think about Debian or Linux Mint?

  • Help recovering broken OS (permissions issue)

    (At the bottom there is an important update.) I was doing experiments in order to backup a remote account to my local system, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I'm not confident with duplicity and probably, due to wrong syntax, some local files have been replaced with remote files. This is just a supposition, I'm not sure this is the real cause of OS corruption. The corruption happened after experimenting with backups, so I think I did something wrong at this regard. I was aware there was a problem when I tried to access a command using sudo: $ sudo ls sudo: unable to open /etc/sudoers: Permission denied sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting sudo: unable to initialize policy plugin This is how /etc/sudoers looks like: $ ls -ald /etc/sudoers -r--r----- 1 root root 788 Oct 2 18:30 /etc/sudoers At this point I tried to reboot and now this is the message I get: The system is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself. I tried to follow the wizard to configure these settings, but without luck (the system prevents me going on when I press "Next"). The thing that makes me a bit less worried is that all the data on the disk seems readable and I'm able to access them using a live cd. I run memtest and RAM seems to be OK. Do you have any idea about how to recover my system? I'm very glad to provide further information, just let me know what info could be helpful. UPDATE. The issue is about wrong permissions and this is how I discovered: I mounted the root partition of the broken OS on /mnt/broken/ (live CD) and did ls /mnt/broken/. I got a permission denied error, while I expected to have the directory listing. I had to do sudo ls /mnt/broken/ and this worked. Thus without having root permission via sudo it's impossible to access the root of broken os. The current output of ls -ld /mnt/broken/ is: drwxr-x--- 29 1000 812 4096 2012-12-08 21:58 /mnt/broken Any thoughts on how to restore the old (working) set of permissions?

    So my computer has 2 operating systems on it, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. When I downloaded Ubuntu i had a ton of trouble booting windows 7 up again, then I downloaded GRUB and switched my default OS back to Windows. Sadly though, I'm trying to get into writing php with Apache. I Downloaded WAMP (windows Apache MySQL php) but for some reason, php doesn't work. I though i would try downloading LAMP (Linux apace MySQL php) but whenever I boot up my PC, I don't get a chance to enter the Ubuntu OS. How could I get back to running Ubuntu? Actually, it doesn't prompt me for a boot menu or anything. It just goes straight to the windows symbol

  • (help help!!!) Easy_install the wrong version of python modules (Mac OS)

    I installed Python 2.7 in my mac. The Python version is correct here. But when I try to easy_install some modules. The system will install the modules with python version 2.6 which are not able be imported to Python 2.7. And of course I can not do the functions I need in my code.   • How do I reset the $PATH variable on Mac OS X?

    I've messed up my path variable, and now some apps that I run raise errors saying Command Not Found (error 127) for commands like 'date' and 'sleep'. These commands work fine when executed directly in the shell. I'm guessing this has something to do with a malformed $PATH variable, and need to know how to reset it. I've deleted the files ~/.bashrc , ~/.bash_profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, and ~/.bashrc and ~/.profile. What other files could hold my $PATH? Is there some simpler way to reset the Path than dig into the myriad files which could hold my path? Note, this path problem is only with my user. I made a test user on my system, and the path was fine, back to normal.

  • OS X (10.6) Apache Sudden Death, Nginx not working either...

    Hi, I turned on my computer today and apache wasn't working. This is weird as its been working for the last 6 months without issue. The only thing I did which may of caused a problem, is I uninstalled a bunch of gems. This shouldn't be the issue though as apache doesn't rely on gems. I decided to give nginx a try to see if it would work and have the exact same issue. The symtoms are: I go to http://localhost and get the browsers default 404 page (not rendered by apache/nginx) No error is found anywhere (I checked all logs) Apache is rinning (also tried with Nginx) How can I debug this to find the root of the problem? I can't think of why this would be happening. I've tried repairing permissions in case this was the issue, apparently it wasn't. Everything was working the other day, and nothing changed in the apache config. I was trying to embed a font on a different domain than the page it would be used on, and it didn't work. I thought it may have been a bug, but from what I read on the MDC reference page, I noticed this note: In Gecko, web fonts are subject to the same domain restriction (font files must be on the same domain as the page using them), unless HTTP access controls are used to relax this restriction. It looks like they designed the browser that way on purpose. Out of curiosity, why would they do that? Is there any security risk with embedding a font? Or is it for legal trademark or copyright issues? Or something else?

  • jQuery UI sortable issue with helper Y offset value being same as scroll offset on FireFox only

    I have a problem with a jQuery UI 1.7.2 sortable list in Firefox, IE7-8 work fine. When I'm scrolled down a bit, the helper element seems to have an offset of the same height that I'm scrolled down from the mouse pointer which makes it impossible to see which item you originally started dragging. How do I fix this or work around the issue? If there is no fix what is a really good alternative drag-able plugin?   • jPlayer problem in Firefox - also throws error from jQuery?! Not related to OGG support.

    I've been working on a small SVG website, http://docroot.ca/ - the SVG part has been working out pretty well. In the current site, jPlayer is called and given an mp3. jPlayer functions properly in Safari, Chrome, and Opera, but not Firefox which throws the following two errors: Error: not well-formed Source File: Line: 1, Column: 191 Source Code: <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><embed name="jqjp_flash_0" id="jqjp_flash_0" src="js/Jplayer.swf" width="0" height="0" bgcolor="#ffffff" quality="high" FlashVars="id=jPlayerBox&fid=jqjp_flash_0&vol=80" allowScriptAccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></ and: Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... The former might have something to do with jPlayer's .swf component. The weird thing is the same code works in http://willshown.com/dw, but not in http://docroot.ca.     Hello, I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join but am pretty confused (I know I am very bad at scripting/programming) See, according to the docs ( http://docs.python.org/library/os.path.html ) if I say os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get C:sourcedir as it's output. According to the docs, this is normal (right?) But when I use the copytree command, Python will output it the desired way, for example import shutil src = os.path.join('c:', 'src') dst = os.path.join('c':', 'dst') shutil.copytree(src, dst) Here is the error code I get WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C:src/.' If I wrap the os.path.join with os.path.normpath I get the same error If this os.path.join can't be used this way, then I am confused as to its purpose According to the pages suggested by Stack Overflow, slashes should not be used in join--that is correct I assume? Thanks guys(girls) for your help
