  • How to safely let users run arbitrary Ruby code?

    - by igul222
I realize this sounds a little crazy, but I'm working on a project for which I need a server to run user-provided Ruby code and return the result. I'm looking to prevent something like this: system("rm -rf /") eval("something_evil") # etc... I'm sure there must be some reasonably safe way to do this, as it already exists at places like tryruby.org. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • Using NULL in MySQL

    - by JPro
The data in my dabatase comes from an external source and where ever there is no data passed, I keep NULL in those places. Can anyone tell me if there are any implications in using NULL to represent empty value? Should I follow some other convention like 'data_not_available'? or something like that? Can anyone suggest?

  • Where a developer can sell / donate his time?

    - by kyrisu
Recently business isn't good and was wondering what are your favourite places where you can sell your time working on a projects (you get specification / idea - you crank code - you get paid :) ) (I don't mean selling your own apps, just working for someone else) or where you can donate your time (you get specification - you crank code - you feel good :D) (I've heard about cranking code on weekends for charities in US but I'm from Poland so I was thinking about something not location specific)

  • What is operator<< <> in C++?

    - by Austin Hyde
I have seen this in a few places, and to confirm I wasn't crazy, I looked for other examples. Apparently this can come in other flavors as well, eg operator+ <>. However, nothing I have seen anywhere mentions what it is, so I thought I'd ask. It's not the easiest thing to google operator<< <>( :-)

  • About import statement in Java

    - by user198729
test.java: import javax.media; Which directories are javax.media searched from? I suppose those in CLASSPATH specified by javac -cp will of course be searched. But will it also search in the directory where test.java locates? And are there any other possible places that will be searched?

  • Finding databases for use in applications

    - by JonF
Does anyone have some recommendations on how I can find databases for random things that I might want to use in my application. For example, a database of zip code locations, area code cities, car engines, IP address locations, or whatever. I'm just asking generally when you decide you need a bunch of data where are some good places to start looking other than google?

  • Favourite Open Source iPhone apps

    - by objektivs
I'm an aspiring iPhone developer and I'm looking for a significant OS iPhone codebase to see how others build apps. I'm especially interested in examples exhibiting some or all of the following: business/enterprise apps apps that interact with web services apps utilising XML apps using oauth or other authenticate Personally, I'm less interested in games, but feel free to include any examples for the benefit of others. I'm asking here because the usual places I've been looking (i.e. sourceforge) don't seem to have the kind of examples I'm looking for.

  • Java Download Concurrent Data

    - by xger86x
Hi, i'm developing an app which download map tiles around different places in a city. To do this, i have one thread for each place in which i select the tiles and create a thread to download each. Well, the question is how to avoid creating a thread for a tile that already exists in the thread pool. Should not just check if the file exists, since it is possible that the thread for that tile already exists (other place already need that tile) but the file has not been created- Any idea? Thanks

  • iPhone keeps going into dim/sleep mode even with the proper API calls.

    - by Kyle
I call: [[ UIApplication sharedApplication ] setIdleTimerDisabled: YES ] on the applicationDidFinishLaunching event.. I set a breakpoint on it, which fires so I know it's getting called.. I've also called this function in other places as well.. Basically, a 3G iPhone will still go into sleep mode, but my 3GS won't. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Both are running the latest OS versions. Thanks for reading!

  • trouble setting node['chef-client']['interval']

    - by atiniir
I've searched many places and haven't get found the answer to this, I suspect I'm missing something either fundamental or basic (maybe both) I'm using the chef-client::windows_service recipe and trying to set the interval and can't seem to sort it out. I've tried at the role level with: { "defaults": { "chef_client": { "interval":15 } }, "overrides":{ } } and at the node level with: { "chef_client": { "interval":25 }, "tags":[] } but the interval on the node is still 1800 (default)

  • Where do I place a set_locale in Kohana PHP framework?

    - by janoChen
In the following tutorial: http://pinoytech.org/blog/post/Kohana-2.4-I18N-internationalization-and-localization-Library the author says: I'd put it in a Base Controller so that all Controllers inherit it. this is the code: I18n::set_locale('tl_PH'); I tried placing it in all the controller and places I could but is not working. Which is the exact place where I should place it?
