  • Learning Java for electrical engineering [closed]

    I'm an electrical engineering student ( Power, control & instrumentation). 2 months ago I started learning C, and I found programming something really enjoyable and I'd like to continue learning C and few other programming languages along with my electrical engineering degree. So my university is offering an extensive Java Oracle course for 7 days (like 5-6 hours a day) for a really decent price, do you think as an electrical engineer this would help me in my future career? What are the benefits of learning Java for an electrical engineer of my specialization? Do you think it's a good idea for someone in my case to take such an extensive course? I'm hardworker and I really enjoy these things, so I don't think that would be a problem for me.

  • Alternative Web model

    One of the problems web apps have against native apps, especially on the mobile front, is the constant need to re-download each web page on request. Ultimately, this leads to slower performance. Why if web apps only download new pages if they're actually needed, not because they're simply requested. For example: perhaps the server can store a web page version in a cookie. Every slight change to the page on the server-side changes the version number. Now instead of the browser requesting a new page each time, why not just check the version number and have the server send the page if they're different? If the page similar, the user can just use a cached page. I'm sure browsers doesn't necessarily have to change to accommodate changes to this, correct?

This will return only JSON response (No HTML will be generated from server side) so that this JSON response can be used to build native smartphone apps. API service being common to all clients. My question is, since there is no HTML response from server side, can the MV* Javascript Frameworks like Angular / Backbone / Ember take care of complete Front-end, right from generating HTML page with CSS?

  • How to run AWS sample JAVA code on an EC2

    I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it? I'm just trying to run the basic DynamoDB example that connects to the database and adds a new table and row

    I got into Minecraft 2 months ago and just today I switched to Ubuntu. I downloaded Java from the special script (http://www.duinsoft.nl/packages.php?t=en) and after I verified it said it was installed. So I downloaded the Minecraft.jar file and ran it through the Java runtime. It updated like the launcher should... ... And it froze. Went black, didn't even get to the Mojang screen. Please help me! Minecraft is my favorite game and I can't stand to lose it.

    As a Java developer, I am developing trying to use the clean code rules. But in my team we are facing a concrete problem: We have a business layer offering a service called "createObject", this service makes a lot of operation which can result to problem. E.g: parentObjectDontExist, objectAlreadyExist, dontHaveAuthorizationToCreate, operationFailed... and we want the UI using this service to display different information messages depending which error occurred. In old java dev, we should have create all signed exception type and throw it in createObject. As Clean code says, it is forbidden to use Exception for business logic AND signed exceptions are evil... Why not...But i don't know how to solved this problem and i don't want to use return code. For example, the logging sybsystem: Option 1: All in one package, named to sort nicely Log - static accessor LogMonitor - interface for log minotor LogMonitorBase - abstract class LogMonitorStdout - print log to console LogWriter - interface for file logger LogWriterSimple - log writer with just one log file LogWriterArchiving - log writer that handles old log files Option 2: Subpackages for Monitors and Writers, with better names Log monitors/LogMonitor monitors/BaseMonitor monitors/StdoutMonitor writers/LogWriter writers/SimpleLog writers/ArchivingLog The second maybe looks better, but perhaps it's not so practical from the java point of view (two extra packages). What do you suggest as the best practice here? A lot in one package, grouped by naming prefixes, or a lot of subpackages with better names?

My employer doesn't use Maven, but the more I read about it, the more convinced I am that Maven + Hudson will be greatly beneficial for us. First, though, I have to become comfortable with those technologies in my spare time, so that I can create a proof-of-concept. Right now, I'm still a Maven newbie. Is there a set of best practices for creating Java EE web apps with Maven? For example, I could create a project with a basic archetype and then add all of the necessary JARs by putting dependencies in the POM for the servlet container, EJB, EclipseLink, etc... That might work, but it might not be the best way to do it. I'd greatly appreciate any guidance that you could provide on this topic. Thank you very much!

    Hi all, I need to develop a basic web app very quickly (1 week) for a demo. My requirements are Java (I need to make use of existing Java libraries to access the relevant data) 2 screens One for static data view, maybe some search parameters Other for basic form entry No fancy AJAX required Ideally easy for a web designer to come in and tart it up as necessary, without having to rewrite everything My first stop was going to be to checkout Wicket as I've heard good things about it. I don't have the time right now to dive into anything heavy, which probably writes off JSF in my mind (I played with JSF1, steep learning curve which I've now slid back down). I'm happy to treat the result as throwaway so if there's a framework which starts of well but then doesn't scale up to bigger projects, that would be ok. Any suggestions appreciated on frameworks/approach.

    I'm trying to write a Java formula based on this tutorial: 2-D elastic collisions without Trigonometry. I am in the section "Elastic Collisions in 2 Dimensions". In step 1, it mentions "Next, find the unit vector of n, which we will call un. This is done by dividing by the magnitude of n". My below code represents the normal vector of 2 objects (I'm using a simple array to represent the normal vector), but I am not really sure what the tutorial means by dividing the magnitude of n to get the un. int[] normal = new int[2]; normal[0] = ball2.x - ball1.x; normal[1] = ball2.y - ball1.y; Can anyone please explain what un is, and how I can calculate it with my array in Java?

    When I tried searching this I would just get things on equality. When I was reading through some documentation for navigation in Android I had come across something I had never seen before. I came across this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle(); It almost looks like something you can do in JavaScript where you can take the first not-null variable and assign it to a variable. In JavaScript I would do this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle || getTitle(); And it would return the first not null, in Java, is this double equals usage the equivalent in Java? What is this type of expression called?

    I remember when I learnt PHP, it was suggested that I code a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals and syntax. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would learn about PHP in a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. I am now learning Java, and reading the book Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book. Thanks.

  • What should be stored in UserContext?

    From my general understanding I believe UserContext for a web application is supposed to hold user authentication and authorization (user roles) information. As part of user roles, there are definitions on who can access what data and accordingly the corresponding reference data is loaded into the UserContext as well. Is this a good practice to load and use reference data from UserContext? Does this have any impact with the number of sessions vs size of data it is holding inside JVM? I am thinking we use UserContext only for authentication and authorization but load the reference data from cache on demand and use it if required.

    I am interested in creating a simple web application that will take in user input, convert it to an XML file and send the file to a database. Coding wise I feel I am okay, it is just the general setup and what implementation to use I am a bit unsure of. At the moment I have a JSP page containing a form, the user fills out the form and on submit a get method is sent to a servlet, in the servlet doGet() method the servlet is instantiating a java object and passing it the user inputted data. The java object then writes that data to an XML file and sends it to the database via REST. All I would be interested to know is if this the standard/optimal way of creating such a web application. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks

    So I've been working on trying to figure this out, oddly when I ran it one machine I got a generic Axis Fault with no description, but now on another machine I'm getting a different error message, but I'm still stuck. The table are innodb and I tried to drop all tables and recreate it the problem remains... EDIT : Well I think I have a start of answer... I change the log level of hibernate to DEBUG and before it crash I have the following log insert into Semspace (name, [...]) values (?, [...]) So it looks like it does not try to insert the idCorpus and as it is not null it uses the default value "0" which does not refers to an existing entry in Corpus table...

If I run my web-service with main as a Java-Application (for tests) there is no problem, no error messages. However when I try to call it via the server, I get the following error: java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol I use the same xml file, the same code (without main), and I just cannot figure out, what the cause of the error can be. here is my code: DOMParser parser=new DOMParser(); try { parser.setFeature("http://xml.org/sax/features/validation", true); parser.setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema",true); parser.setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/dynamic",true); parser.setErrorHandler(new myErrorHandler()); parser.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(xmlFile))); document=parser.getDocument(); xmlFile is constructed in the client so: String myFile ="C:/test.xml"; File file=new File(myFile); String myString=""; FileInputStream fis=new FileInputStream(file); BufferedInputStream bis=new BufferedInputStream(fis); DataInputStream dis=new DataInputStream(bis); while (dis.available()!=0) { myString=myString+dis.readLine(); } fis.close(); bis.close(); dis.close(); Any suggestions will be appreciated!

    I have created a simple web-service using Java. i want to load jars related to web-service during runtime.     I have a web service that I am re-writing from VB to a Java servlet. In the web service, I want to extract the body entity set on the client-side as such: StringEntity stringEntity = new StringEntity(xml, HTTP.UTF_8); stringEntity.setContentType("application/xml"); httppost.setEntity(stringEntity); In the VB web service, I get this data by using: Dim objReader As System.IO.StreamReader objReader = New System.IO.StreamReader(Request.InputStream) Dim strXML As String = objReader.ReadToEnd and this works great. But I am looking for the equivalent in Java. I have tried this: ServletInputStream dataStream = req.getInputStream(); byte[] data = new byte[dataStream.toString().length()]; dataStream.read(data); but all it gets me is an unintelligible string: data = [B@68514fec Please advise.   • java web templates across multiple WAR files

    I have a multi WAR web application that was designed badly. There is a single WAR that is responsible for handling some authorization against a database and defines a standard web page using a jsp taglib. The main WAR basically checks the privileges of the user and than based on that, displays links to the context path of the other deployed WARS. Each of the other deployed WARs includes this custom tag lib. I am working on redesigning this application, and one of the nice things that I want to retain is that we have other project teams that have developed these WAR modules that "plug into" our current system to take advantage of other things we have to offer. I am not entirely sure how to handle the page templates though. I need a templating system that would be easy enough to use across multiple wars (I was thinking of jsp fragments??). I really only need to define a consistent header and main navigation section. Whatever else is displayed on the page is up to the individual web project. Any suggestions? I hope that this is clear, if not I can elaborate more.
