• Connect iPad to windows 7 VPN

  My iPad keeps spitting out the error: "A connection could not be established to the PPP server." I am trying to connect it to a VPN I set up with Windows 7 as an incoming connection. On the iPad, I went into the VPN settings, added a new PPTP VPN with the following information Server: Windows 7 Computer's IP RSA SecurID: OFF Account: Account Username Password: Account Password Encryption Level: Auto Send All Traffic: ON Proxy: Off Now I know that it is making some connection to the Windows 7 Computer because whenever I intentionally put in the wrong VPN password on the iPad, it makes me put in the correct one before trying to connect again. All the ports are forwarded on my router for PPTP, and my Windows 7 Firewall is even off to try to get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

• Windows 7 Pro x64 suffering from insomnia

  My Win 7 Pro x64 is unable to enter sleep mode. Pressing the sleep button results in strange state where the computer starts entering the sleep mode, the display is turned off but then the whole process stops, it does not switch off the hdd, the keyboard still responds to numlock/capslock, but the display does not on anymore. I have to cut power and restart. If I remove everything (wireless mouse, external hdd, usb hub, etc.) it does enter sleep mode, but if there is something left, it does not, though every one of them has "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." checked and "Allow this device to wake the computer" unchecked. Why does it not work? It was working properly in the RC.

• No keyboard after suspend, even after hard reset

  all. While I was using a Ubuntu 9.1 live CD, I put the computer (Toshiba Satellite C655) into standby. After I resumed, the keyboard stopped functioning, though the mouse (USB) still worked. I decided to turn off the computer, but after Ubuntu shuts down, it asks you to press "enter" to actually turn the machine off. The keyboard was still dead, so I all I could do was use the on/off switch to power down the computer. Now, when I try to boot the computer, nothing happens. Before this problem, I would see a menu asking me to select an OS (I had Windows 7 and Windows XP installed). I cannot use any emergency measures because I need to press F12 to boot from a CD, and the keyboard is still not working. I tried removing the HD to force a boot from the CD, but it didn't work. I also tried to plug in a USB keyboard, which failed as well. Right now, I have no idea how to fix this. Any ideas? Thanks.

• A quick tip for those working with the Windows Phone 7 AD SDK.

  One thing that I’ve noticed in several apps in the Windows Phone 7 marketplace is the ad chopping off on the right hand side. I decided that my next Windows Phone 7 app will be ad supported so why not sign up for the Advertising SDK and investigate this issue. *Note: If you want to see this in an actual app then download the free app called “Road Rage”. So here is an example of what I am talking about: You will notice that the right hand side of the AD is chopped off using the default ad banner. You can see the border on the left hand side clearly. So, what exactly is going on? Let’s take a look at this in the designer. From this image we can see it clearer, the margin of the grid that the ad is contained in needs to be removed. By default, the ContentPanel in a Windows Phone Page has a margin already set on it. See below for an example of this: <!--ContentPanel - place additional content here--> <Grid x:Name="ContentPanel" Grid.Row="1" Margin="12,0,12,0"> </Grid> If you simply remove that margin then your ad will display properly as shown below. • Skype prevents computer from idling?

  When using Skype, it prevents the computer from idling, going into sleep mode and turning the monitor off. I notice on my laptop if I use a tool like Monitor Off to manually turn my monitor off, after about a minute, the monitor will come back on as if Skype has pressed a key or moved my mouse to exit out of that idle state. This also prevents other programs (such as Pidgin) from going idle as well, so it looks like I'm online 24/7... even though it should be going idle after 5 minutes of inactivity. Is there a way to circumvent this behavior in Skype?

• How can I deactivate the gnome desktop of my ubuntu server?

  I'm running a home server on my old laptop (atom cpu). I installed ubuntu 12.04 server edition, but I also installed ubuntu-desktop. So, when I turn it on, ubuntu desktop is shown. I sometimes use GUI, but I want to turn the ubuntu-desktop (gnome-desktop) off when I don't use it. I think I can save resources by turning off the GUI. It's necessary since my laptop's performance is not very good and it often becomes very hot. I guess I can run ubuntu-desktop on my terminal with "startx" command. But, I don't know how to turn the X window off for a moment. Anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance.

• tmux -- any way to enable scrolling, but not selection?

  I like that when mode-mouse is on in tmux, I can scroll through the buffer, but I don't like that I can't copy stuff to my OS clipboard by selecting it (as when tmux is disabled). Question: Is there any way to enable mouse scrolling, but not selection? I'm using KDE's konsole, if it matters. I've tried setting, set -g mouse-select-pane off set -g mouse-select-window off but no luck -- the only difference seems to be whether mode-mouse is on (tmux captures scrolling and selection) or off (tmux captures neither scrolling nor selection).

• What is making iTunes stop playing when my computer idles?

  I've got a rare weekend with nothing to do, so I'm getting some housework done. I have iTunes playing for some background noise. Every 20 minutes or so, it just stops playing; if I move the mouse it starts again. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit. My power settings have my monitor turning off at 10 minutes and hard drives at 20. Both sleep and hibernate are disabled. "Aha!", you say, "Clearly when the hard drive is turned off iTunes is stopping!" Not so. I fiddled with the settings and changed them to make the hard drive sleep in 5 minutes, and iTunes kept playing for the 7 minutes I watched it. I'm currently trying to see what happens if I set the hard drive to never turn off, but I'd prefer to leave it at 20 minutes to save minor amounts of energy. What other settings could be the culprit?

• How much data does windows write on boot

  This question was inspired by Bob's comment to my answer here. On boot, windows writes files to the hard drive (I imagine this to be the case, as it has a way of detecting if the boot was previously interrupted by a hard power-off, and I am sure many other things). But assuming that there is a "smooth" boot, where there are no error, etc, and no logon scripts that run, and things like that, about how much (a few KB, a few MB, a few GB) data gets written to the drive? For simplicity's sake, assume that: hibernation is turned off windows 7 pagefile is turned off (does this matter right at boot, or only later?) How could one go about measuring this? Are there resources that have this information?

  Just a quick question, I couldn't find this out by looking around and have not had the time to run a test myself: Is it possible to create image hierarchies in MDT? Take this example where we have three images. - Image 1: Base OS - Image 2: Company Wide Applications (built off Image 1) - Image 3: Specific Role Applications (built off Image 2) Now just say we change the version of an application in Image 2. The next time we build Image 3, will this take the new version of the application since it's basing its image off Image 2? Also, If we add a program to Image 1, leave Image 2 unchanged and re-build Image 3, would this include the new program? I'm trying to plan out a way of creating images such that if a change is required for an image that is on basically every machine (think, Image 1) then we only have to change it in one location. Has anyone actually done something like this and has any tips?

From experience let me reinforce that it pays off. It pays off in your current job because of the education received and the competence increase of your skills which applied will bring recognition.In these days and times, loyalty to a company is truly at an end. However many companies do care about cultivating their employees which creates a brand of loyalty that can't be replaced. Old companies with the Corp. mentality (or because of the corp. mentality) ever decrease their budgets on organizational sections and thereby do a RIF as a matter of business.The mistakes they make during this process can be risky. But who am I, but a lowly ole programmer, to judge risk. If you are laid off, be friendly with your past manager, and based on simple questions and help, give whatever help you can over the phone even though you are under no obligation to do so.It is also quite possible that there are opportunities to make at home with a new company in the future. • Safest snapshot of a failing harddrive?

  I have a headless machine that stopped booting, so I pulled it out for diagnostics and got a message that one of the harddrives was about to fail, so I pulled them all out and I need to get everything off, before figuring out which I need to get rid of. I wasn't sure which drive was failing, because it only said "Harddrive 1" and I don't know which it referred to. I'm wondering the best way to get everything off. I'm worried if I copy everything, I could get corrupt data and not realize some files are wrong until the drive is completely out of commission. What are my best options to get everything off in a way I can safely move to new storage?

• Merge Two Folders To Act As One (Software Raid 0?)

  Using Windows 7, I'm trying to setup what I've come to call a "Software Raid of Folders", not completely sure it's the right term, but I'm sure anyone who knows the true term will understand what I'm getting at. I have two folders, on two seperate harddrive, I would like to "merge" these folders while keeping them on seperate harddrive so they act as one folder. Example: Music and Videos are to be merged together to a new folder called "Merged" Music runs off of Harddrive 1 Videos runs off of Harddrive 2 Anything new saved inside Merged is saved within Videos that runs off of Harddrive 2 Now you see how I came up with the term "Software Raid", it's like an average RAID 0 setup, but instead I want to do it with just two specific folders on two different drives within Windows. Any help on this is apprecieated!

• USB 3.0 Device not detected in Windows 8

  About my setup: Windows 8 64-bit. X79-UD3 Motherboard. Latest Windows 8 USB 3.0 Drivers from motherboard manufacturer website. All right so device manager detects my USB 3.0 ports, so all is well there. However when I plug in my external USB 3.0 hard drive, windows doesn't even make a beep; the hard drive is not picked up by device manager at all. The SAME thing happens with Ubuntu 12.10 BUT adding PCI=nomsi (as a workaround) to the Grub command line of the Ubuntu boot option makes Ubuntu 12.10 detect my external hard drive. I also have a few other doubts, if you guys would be kind enough to answer them that include: Should XHCI hand-off in the UEFI bios be enabled or disabled for Windows 8? The difference between XHCI hand-off and EHCI hand-off and what are it's effects on USB 3.0 functionality? And last but not least how can I get Windows 8 to recognize my external hard drive when Ubuntu 12.10 (after the Grub workaround) works fine?

• Why does one of two identical Javascripts work in Firefox?

  Hi, I have two image swap functions and one works in Firefox and the other does not. The swap functions are identical and both work fine in IE. Firefox does not even recognize the images as hyperlinks. I am very confused and I hope some one can shed some light on this for me. Thank you very much in advance for any and all help. FYI: the working script swaps by onClick via DIV elements and the non-working script swaps onMouseOver/Out via "a" elements. Remember both of these work just fine in IE. • WPF touch and slide/drag animation

  I'm trying to create a pretty simple WPF interface, and from what I know this should be mostly possible using pure XAML. What I know I have a pretty basic understanding of WPF so far, however I have a decent grasp on XAML. I know or can work out how to put content in these panels. This isn't the topic of this question. What I don't know I don't know how to animate this interface. I'm not very proficient at binding, however again, that's not the topic of this question. The topic of this question is what would be the best way to animate panels 1-4 (images below) so that they may be dragged (via touch) into view. The number of panels here may be static for the purpose of this question. The panels (1-4) can be stack panels, grids or whatever; their content isnt important. What is important is the container that would contain all 4 panels. The complication in this animation is the other two containers here (Item One/TODO), as they're in the way of a smooth animation. If it makes this question simpler, the touch features can be ignored for now, and a simple button push can slide the containers across. One Two

  I have the following image in a CMS that I want to hide, I dont really want to change source code but would like to hide a specific image which does not have a class applied. Here is the HTML: <td class="right side"> <a title="Show only topic 1" href="view.php?id=3&topic=1"> <img alt="Show only topic 1" src="http://vl3.co.uk/iphone/pix/i/one.gif"/> </a> <br/> </td> I want to hide the <a> and the <img>, bare in mind the title and alt tag can be different so cant use that as an identifier. I presume I could use .find() and then use .parent() to set the <a> to display: none; thus hiding the img? Im inlcuding the jQuery library, however the CMS has YUI included out of the box so if anyone has a YUI method it would be appreicated.

• Help with mysql sum and group query and managing jquery graph results.

  Hey guys, I have a system I am trying to design that will retrieve information from a database, so that it can be plotted in a jquery graph. I need to retrieve the information and somehow put it in the necessary format (for example two coordinates var d = [[1269417600000, 10],[1269504000000, 15]];). My table that I am selecting from is a table that stores user votes with fields: points_id (1=vote up ,2=vote down), user_id, timestamp, and topic_id. What I need to do is select all the votes and somehow group them into respective days and then sum the difference between 1 votes and 2 votes for each day. I then need to somehow display the data in the appropriate plotting format shown earlier. For example April 1, 4 votes. The data needs to be separated by commas, except the last plot entry, so I am not sure how to approach that.   I am writing a small website to store the papers I have written. The relation papers<- author is important, but the order of the name of the authors (which one is First Author, which one is second order, and so on) is also important. I am just learning Django so I don't know much. • Can CSS change the apparent sequence of elements, e.g. using float or position?

  Edit: answer to this question is easy, a simple example of float left and float right. I'd like to float some annotations to the left of a topic using HTML and CSS, for example the 'status' and 'author' annotations shown in the following mockup/image: For semantic reasons, perhaps: I prefer to use CSS instead of a table-based layout In the HTML, the status should appear after the corresponding heading For example: <h1>This is a section title</h1> <div class="status">approved</div> <div class="author">chris</div> <p>This is some text. Lorem ipsum.</p> <p>Lorem ipsum.</p> <h1>Different section title</h1> <div class="status">rejected</div> <p>Lorem ipsum.</p> I'd like the annotations to be after the heading in the HTML, because everything associated with (i.e. the contents of) a topic is usually whatever is after the topic's heading. However I'd like the annotations to be displayed before (to the left of) the heading, as illustrated above. Is this possible? What is the most semantic HTML, and corresponding CSS, that will render as shown above? Would you recommend a table-based layout instead? Even if that means putting the headings in a table cell? It may not be possible; this answer suggests it isn't possible ... but I don't know CSS well enough to say that for sure.
