• Career development as a Software Developer without becoming a manager.

  I’m a developer, I like to write new exciting code everyday, my perfect day at work is a day that when I wake up, I know that I have to write some code that I haven’t done before or to use a new framework/language/platform that is unknown to me. The best days in the office is when a project is waiting for me to architect or write. In my 15 years in the development field, I had to in order to get a better salary to manage people, not just to lead developers, to actually manage people. Something that I found out when I get into a management position is that I’m not that good at managing people, and not afraid to say it. I do not enjoy that part of the job, the worse one, takes time away from what I really like. Leading developers and managing people are very different things. I do like teaching and leading developers in a project. Yet most people believe, and is true in most companies, the way to get a better salary is to be promoted to a manager position. In order to advance in your career you need to let go of the everyday writing code and become a supervisor or manager. This is the path for developers after they become senior developers. As you get older and your family grows, the only way to hit your salary requirements is to advance your career to become a manager and get that manager salary. That path is the common in most companies, the most intelligent companies out there, have learned that promoting good developers mean getting a crappy manager and losing a good resource. Now scratch everything I said, because as I previously stated, I don’t see myself going to the office everyday and just managing people until is time to go home. I like to spend hours working in some code to accomplish a task, learning new platforms and languages or patterns to existing languages. Being interrupted every 15 minutes by emails or people stopping by my office to resolve their problems, is not something I could enjoy. All the sudden riding my motorcycle to work one cold morning over the Redlands Canyon and listening to .NET Rocks podcast, Michael “Doc” Norton explaining how to take control of your development career without necessary going to the manager’s track. I know, I should not have headphones under my helmet when riding a motorcycle in California. His conversation with Carl Franklin and Richard Campbell was just confirming everything I have ever did with actually more details and assuring that there are other paths. His method was simple yet most of us, already do many of those steps, Mr. Michael “Doc” Norton believe that it pays off on the long run, that finally companies prefer to pay higher salaries to those developers, yet I would actually think that many companies do not see developers that way, this is not true for bigger companies. However I do believe the value of those developers increase and most of the time, changing companies could increase their salary instead of staying in the same one. In short without even trying to get into the shadow of Mr. Norton and without following the steps in the order; you should love to learn new technologies, and then teach them to other geeks. I personally have learn many technologies and I haven’t stop doing that, I am a professor at UCR where I teach ASP.NET and Silverlight. Mr Norton continues that after than, you want to be involve in the development community, user groups, online forums, open source projects. I personally talk to user groups, I’m very active in forums asking and answering questions as well as for those I got awarded the Microsoft MVP for ASP.NET. After you accomplish all those, you should also expose yourself for what you know and what you do not know, learning a new language will make you humble again as well as extremely happy. There is no better feeling that learning a new language or pattern in your daily job. If you love your job everyday and what you do, I really recommend you to follow Michael’s presentation that he kindly share it on the link below. • Is it possible to save the product key of Windows 8?

  I have Windows 8 activated in my system. I don't have the product key of windows right now. Now I want to format my system again. Is there any way so that I can reuse the key? Is there any way I can get the key from an activated windows machine? Edit: I am not able to find the product key because I have used a MAK as my product key. Now I want the same to use it after formatting my disk. I found a software Volume Activation Manager tool on the windows website. I am not sure how to use it. Please tell me how can I reuse my key?

• Why don't the .net 4.0 charting controls work in Visual Studio 2010?

  The .net charting controls are advertised as being built into .net 4.0. However, they do not work in Visual Studio 2010 Pro or Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I get the error, System.Web.HttpException: Error executing child request for ChartImg.axd. That sounds like the message from .net 3.5 if charting wasn't set up correctly. But the bottom of the same page says, "Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:4.0.30319; ASP.NET Version:4.0.30319.1" Does anyone know why this doesn't work?

• Problems with :uniq => true/Distinct option in a has_many_through association w/ named scope (Rails)

  I had to make some tweaks to my app to add new functionality, and my changes seem to have broken the :uniq option that was previously working perfectly. Here's the set up: #User.rb has_many :products, :through = :seasons, :uniq = true has_many :varieties, :through = :seasons, :uniq = true #product.rb has_many :seasons has_many :users, :through = :seasons, :uniq = true has_many :varieties #season.rb belongs_to :product belongs_to :variety belongs_to :user named_scope :by_product_name, :joins = :product, :order = 'products.name' #variety.rb belongs_to :product has_many :seasons has_many :users, :through = :seasons, :uniq = true First I want to show you the previous version of the view that is now breaking, so that we have a baseline to compare. The view below is pulling up products and varieties that belong to the user. Three distinct versions of the same product are displaying on the page. (2) The :uniq option is not working for varieties. I don't have validation set up on this yet, and if the user enters the same variety twice, it does appear on the page. In the previous working version, this was not the case. The result I need is that only one product for any given ID displays, and all varieties associated with that ID display along with such unique product. One thing that sticks out to me is the sql call in the most recent log output. It's adding 'count' to the distinct call. I'm not sure why it's doing that or whether it might be an indication of an issue. I found this unresolved lighthouse ticket that seems like it could potentially be related, but I'm not sure if it's the same issue: https://rails.lighthouseapp.com/projects/8994/tickets/2189-count-breaks-sqlite-has_many-through-association-collection-with-named-scope I've tried a million variations on this and can't get it working. • NuGet: "Unable to load one or more of the requested types"

  I installed NuGet into Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, but when I go to Solution Explorer, right-click on a project's "References" folder, and select "Add Library Package Reference", I immediately get this error: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. There's just an OK button, and no way for me to retrieve the additional information it's telling me about. This is a fresh install of NuGet; I've never installed it on this computer before. How can I fix and/or diagnose this error so I can get NuGet to work?

  We're looking for a cheap-to-free "off the shelf" ASP.NET catalogue application, that will meet the following requirements: Support two kinds of listings: Suppliers of Services Suppliers of Products, and their Products Suppliers can be categorised by: Area of specialisation - including sub-categories Location Other data, e.g. where listing came from Versioning of supplier/product details Easy to use management interface Use masterpages so we can drop it into our existing site layout Run on a Windows 2003 server, with .NET 3.5 installed In an ideal world, the following additional requirements might be met: Suppliers can manage their own listings Other products that are available to us (that will obviously need some additional development to meet these requirements) are: Content Management System (MS) Commerce Server - bear in mind we're not selling the products/suppliers, just listing them Simple DB application. • Sum of path products in DAG

  Suppose we have a DAG with edges labeled with numbers. Define the value of a path as the product of the labels. For each (source,sink)-pair I want to find the sum of the values of all the paths from source to sink. You can do this in polynomial time with dynamic programming, but there are still some choices that can be made in how you decompose the problem. In my case I have one DAG that has to be evaluated repeatedly with different labelings. My question is: for a given DAG, how can we pre-compute a good strategy for computing these values for different labelings repeatedly. It would be nice if there was an algorithm that finds an optimal way, for example a way that minimizes the number of multiplications. But perhaps this is too much to ask, I would be very happy with an algorithm that just gives a good decomposition.

• Best similarity metric for collaborative filtering?

  I'm trying to decide on the best similarity metric for a product recommendation system using item-based collaborative filtering. This is a shopping basket scenario where ratings are binary valued - the user has either purchased an item or not - there is no explicit rating system (eg, 5-stars). Step 1 is to compute item-to-item similarity, though I want to look at incorporating more features later on. Is the Tanimoto coefficient the best way to go for binary values? Or are there other metrics that are appropriate here? Thanks.

• jQuery selector help - Can I generate a selector from clicking on an element?

  Hi All, I have jQuery, FireFox, Firebug, IE, and IE developer toolbar. When I am examing a page with either FireBug or IE Dev toolbar, I am able to click on an element and it shows me in the dom where the element is etc... Is there anyway to transform that selection into a valid jQuery selector? I know I can use ID, classes, and element relative to other elements etc... but what about when I am looking at some random table cell that doesn't have a class or id etc.. Can I generate a selector on the fly like that? I thought for sure there was. Any thoughts or ideas are always appreciated Thanks, ~ck in San Diego

• ASP.net SessionState Error in Design Mode

  I'm getting a weird error in the design view for a user creation page for 2 controls: Error Creating Control - wCreateUser Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. (There's some more) I've done both of these, but I'm still getting the error in design mode. The controls work fine when compiled, and on the live site - this is just in the Visual Web Developer 2010 Design view for the page. Any ideas as to how I can resolve this? Thanks!

• Fluent NHibernate: Entity from one table, but reference will map to another tables?

  Given the following tables: Product ----------- ProductId : int (PK) ProductVersion : int ProductHistory ----------- ProductId : int (PK) ProductVersion : int (PK) Item ----------- ItemId : int (PK) ProductId : int (FK) -- ProductId + ProductVersion relates to ProductHistory ProductVersion : int (FK) And the following classes: public class Product { } public class Item { public Product Product { get; set; } } What I want to happen is this; we get a Product from the Product table, assign it to Item.Product property. But that Item.Product property should map to ProductHistory. The idea is that only the latest version of a product is in the main Product table, so we allow customers to search against that table (so that if each product has 4 versions and there are 1000 products, we only need to query though 1000 products, not 1000 products * 4 versions of each). • Would you use Code Bubbles?

  I've read this question mentioning Code Bubbles and I've watched their video presentation. The video is impressive, and does seem a little bit futuristic, but apparently it's somewhat real. But that kept me thinking... Would a developer really use such tool? We, as developers, are used to deal with code files, organizing them in directories, in one way or another, some common IDE (for those language that has them). It would be a great leap to use something like Code Bubbles, as they propose. I, personally, am not sure if I could work in such environment... although I think I would just need some adjusting... but I really don't see my mind working out the kinks of it. What are your thoughts on this?

I need to be able to access the files in a folder inside of the WebSite1 folder without using C:\Users\..., but I'm at a loss on how to do that. Can anyone help me out?

• Training new employees on undocumented code

  Our company has a large codebase (2500+ classes/interfaces in just the core alone, many more in other projects) for our flagship software product. We've never really hired more than one developer at a time, so we don't have a real training process. We're going to be bringing in 2-5 more developers now, and probably more in the near future (to put things into perspective, we have 7 right now.) Obviously, we would like to get these guys up to speed as soon as possible. The catch - almost all of our classes (95%+) are completely undocumented. No javadoc, no design docs, basically completely undocumented. What strategies can we employ to bring the new developers up to speed? I'd like to consider situations that include the existing code getting documented, but it's possible management won't allow for the time to get that done, so I also must consider situations where that won't happen. Has anyone been there before? What worked well for you? Thanks!

  As a software development professional in a fairly conservative large-firm, I always had a much more action-oriented bent, as my job was fairly stable and all that mattered was doing as I was told and completing tasks that were germane to the career of a benevolent dictator (i.e., my boss' boss). Now that I'm no longer working for "the Man", I find it just as important to use the left side of my brain and wrap my head around this whole "vision thing". Which do you think is more important for software product development in a small, yet feisty start-up: Knowing the path or walking (or running) it?

• Building a Java CMS - What Existing Product Should I Use?

  I'm a Java developer and in need of a CMS. I've spent a lot of time reading about, and tinkering with Liferay but am concerned that it doesn't cover two of my three major concerns I need to have many sites with individual domains HTML/CSS designers need to be able to design the website templates, look and feel, and layouts in their own tools without having to worry about writing scripts Site and page building APIs must be understandable so that a custom builder interface can be created and harness the CMS as opposed to hacking it Liferay nails the first bullet point, but the second two appear to be unsolved. Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

But however the management does not feel that it is important for QA to be involved in such a training as it is support and development team who will be involved ih developing or fixing the issues in the product. • Is it normal for a software developer to have lots of issues after product went live?

  In recent months, our product (which went live probably 9 months ago) experience an increase in the number of users using it. We faced lots of queries, problems, and complaints from users. Sadly, it seems that a lot of the issues seem to be coming from a module that I have been working on. At times, I wonder if I am incompetent, or is this pretty normal in software development, that bugs are found especially during the initial stages of a software development livecycle after it goes live? I wonder why some issues we faced now are not foreseen by me or the team during development phase. I have been working as a software developer for close to 2 years now. • How do I make the correct career decision in regards to product manager/QA vs programmer?

  I'm curious about how to approach the issue of whether I should focus on programming or on QA/testing/product management. I know that the latter seems like a broad category( if so, think of it as "general IT support" for now). At the moment I'm stronger in QA/prod. mgt ; however I'd like to switch more to programming, and I see I may have this opportunity. Wouldn't it be easier to switch to QA/prod. mgt in the future, if I go into programming now; rather than trying the reverse-order(i.e. if I decided later to go into coding.. say around mid-30s then it'd likely be harder). Just looking for any advice or tips about how to see more clearly. Part of me is scared I can't handle the programming side, but part of me says since there's demand and I'm interested that it's still worth a shot.
