• Where do I read more about building an architecture like Google has? [on hold]

  I want to develop a program that watches and traverses a rather big network for data. This data should then be available to search through with my program, maybe through a web interface or something. My intuitive thought at the moment is to build an architecture kind of like the one Google has. One "front-end" (the Google Search page) which is essentially a regular web application and one "back-end" (which in Google's case traverses the web). Now for the hard part: If I decide to make such a system, how should communication be done between these parts? One idea I had is to use some kind of database that both the back-end and front-end can access, but then comes the issues of concurrent writes and reads. Another issue with just using a database to communicate is that it makes it hard to "notify" the other part when something changes. Let's say that I want the "front-end" part to push changes to the UI when a change is noticed in the back-end. Then the back-end would have to have some way of notifying the front-end of this.

• Why can any user read the content in my homedir?

  Why is it that the default setting makes it possible for user A to look in the homedir of user B and vice versa? And furthermore..that user can not only look into the homedir of another user, he can also open any document he wants to. It feels very insecure to me. There should be more privacy for users. I know how to prevent this situation, but it puzzles me why this should be possible in the first place.

  Hi all, I need to read a website's folders using WMI and C# in IIS 6.0. I am able to read the Virtual directories and applications using the "IISWebVirtualDirSetting" class. However the physical folders located inside a website cannot be read using this class. And for my case i need to read sub folders located within a website and later on set permission on them. For my requirement i dont need to work on Virtual Directories/Web Service Applications (which can be easily obtained using the code below..). I have tried to use IISWebDirectory class but it has been useful.   I would like to read a DICOM file in C#. I don't want to do anything fancy, I just for now would like to know how to read in the elements, but first I would actually like to know how to read the header to see if is a valid DICOM file. It consists of Binary Data Elements. The first 128 bytes are unused (set to zero), followed by the string 'DICM'. This is followed by header information, which is organized into groups. A sample DICOM header First 128 bytes: unused DICOM format. Followed by the characters 'D','I','C','M' Followed by extra header information such as: 0002,0000, File Meta Elements Groups Len: 132 0002,0001, File Meta Info Version: 256 0002,0010, Transfer Syntax UID: 1.2.840.10008.1.2.1. 0008,0000, Identifying Group Length: 152 0008,0060, Modality: MR 0008,0070, Manufacturer: MRIcro In the above example, the header is organized into groups. The group 0002 hex is the file meta information group which contains 3 elements: one defines the group length, one stores the file version and the their stores the transfer syntax. Questions How to I read the header file and verify if it is a DICOM file by checking for the 'D','I','C','M' characters after the 128 byte preamble? How do I continue to parse the file reading the other parts of the data?

• How do I read text from a serial port?

  I am trying to read data off of a Windows serial port through Java. I have the javax.comm libraries and am able to get some data but not correct data. When I read the port into a byte array and convert it to text I get a series of characters but no real text string. I have tried to specify the byte array as being both "UTF-8" and "US-ASCII". Does anyone know how to get real text out of this?   I've started writing a Com addin for Excel 2003 using C#. I'm looking for a code example showing how to read in cell data from the active worksheet. I've seen that you can write code like this: Excel.Range firstCell = ws.get_Range("A1", Type.Missing); Excel.Range lastCell = ws.get_Range("A10", Type.Missing); Excel.Range worksheetCells = ws.get_Range(firstCell, lastCell); to grab a range of cells. What I could use help with is how to read the cell data when you don't know how many rows of data there are. I may be able to determine the starting row that the data will be begin at, but there will be an unkown number of rows of data to read. Could someone provide me w/ an example of how to read rows from the worksheet until you come across a row of empty cells? Also does anyone know how to grab the range of cells the user has selected? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This seems like a powerful dev tool, but I'm having trouble finding detailed documentation to help me learn it :)

  I need a fast and efficient method to read a space separated file with numbers into an array. The files are formatted this way: 4 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 2 5 4 3 21111 101 3 5 6234 1 2 3 4 2 33434 4 5 6 The first row is the dimension of the array [rows columns]. The lines following contain the array data. The data may also be formatted without any newlines like this: 4 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 2 5 4 3 21111 101 3 5 6234 1 2 3 4 2 33434 4 5 6 I can read the first line and initialize an array with the row and column values. Then I need to fill the array with the data values. My first idea was to read the file line by line and use the split function. But the second format listed gives me pause, because the entire array data would be loaded into memory all at once. Some of these files are in the 100 of MBs. The second method would be to read the file in chunks and then parse them piece by piece. Maybe somebody else has a better a way of doing this?

• Does anybody know of existing code to read a mork file (Thunderbird Address Book)?

  I have the need to read the Thunderbird address book on the fly. It is stored in a file format called Mork. Not a pleasant file format to read. I found a 1999 article explaining the file format. I would love to know if someone already has gone through this process and could make the code available. I found mork.pl by Jamie Zawinski (he worked on Netscape Navigator), but I was hoping for a .NET solution. I'm hoping StackOverflow will come to the rescue, because this just seems like a waste of my time to write something to read this file format when it should be so simple. I love the comments that Jamie put in his perl script.   Okay so I am having this problem. I write up a script to be run in cygwin on Windows. I've tried a bunch of basic example scripts in case it was my scripts problem.   In my grails application, some of my domain classes will never be changed by Users. However, some maintenance work is sometimes necessary, and administrator should be able to create/edit few instances from time to time (let's say twice a year). I would like to set a read-only 2nd level cache strategy for these domain classes (static mapping = { cache usage: 'read-only' } ) AND I would like to be able to 'disable' (in very particular situations) the read-only strategy in order to udate some instances via Grails scaffolding edit view. Is it possible? What do you advise me to do? EDIT: The solution I am implementing is a mix of Pascal and Burt answers (see comments). Both answers are great and helpful. So I got a dilemna for choosing the accepted answer! Anyway, thank you.

• Any way to get read timeouts with Java NIO/selectors?

  I'm converting a Java server application which used blocking IO and thread-per-client to NIO and a single IO thread (probably a thread pool after I get the basic implementation done). The one thing I am having an issue with is disconnecting clients after they have been idle for a period. I had previously been using SO_TIMEOUT and blocking reads. However, with selector-based IO, reads don't block... I was hoping that I'd be able to set a timeout and be able to select on read timeout, with something like SelectionKey.isReadTimeout(), but nothing like that seems to exist. The current best solution I have come up with is to have a Timer with a TimerTask which keeps track of the keys which are waiting on read, and then canceling them and re-scheduling them on each read. Is there a better solution?

So does that make the variable byte to contain 8 next bits at the beginning of every loop? It doesn't matter what those bytes really are. The only thing that matters is that I need to read a file in 8-bit stacks. EDIT: Also I collect those bytes in a list and I would like to print them so that they don't print out as ASCII characters, but as raw bytes i.e. when I print that bytelist it gives the result as ['10010101', '00011100', .... ]

  I do not get to understand how the Perl read($buf) function is able to modify the content of the $buf variable. $buf is not a reference, so the parameter is given by copy (from my c/c++ knowledge). So how come the $buf variable is modified in the caller ? Is it a tie variable or something ?   I want to measure time taken for client to receive data over tcp using c#. Im using NetworkStream.Read to read 100 megabits of data that are sent using NetworkStream.Write. I set the buffer to the same size of data, so there no buffer underrun problem etc. Generally it looks like this. Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); stream.Read(bytes, 0, bytes.Length); sw.Stop(); The problem is, there is a possibility where the sender hasnt actually sent the data but the stopwatch is already running. how can i accurately measure the time taken to receive the data? i did try to use the time lapse of the remote pc stream.Write, but the time it took to write is extremely small. by the way, is the stopwatch is the most accurate tool for this task?

The read() function works fine but is really slow so I've tried using the overloaded version using byte[]. For some reason, the audio becomes lossy and strange after download.   My Friend's Pen Drive, which was working well very well just few days ago, is not being recognized after getting used by a virus affected machine.
