  • Structure question over Local/Remote Services, Broadcast Receivers, and Intent Services

    - by Ryan
    I'm writing an android app that has a standard activity, but also needs to monitor incoming/outgoing calls and texts at all times. In addition, the app needs to notify users of information once a day without having the activity open. The information it notifies users of is stored in a database, so communication with the activity is not necessary. I've been researching for a week and still can't decide how to go about doing this. My instinct tells me I need a remote service that has a constantly running broadcast receiver, but every remote service example I see is overly complicated. Could anyone help me better understand what steps I need to take? Thanks in advance.

  • How can I get rid of horizontal padding or indent in html5 search inputs in webkit?

    - by Scott Vandehey
    In webkit only, the text in a search input is indented from the left side. Here's a demo. Even after stripping all padding, text-indent, and setting -webkit-appearance to textfield or none, the text is still indented. It looks to be around 10px or so, but the inspector doesn't show any CSS rules (even browser defaults) that seem to apply this style. Any ideas? <input type="search" value="Search"> -webkit-appearance: textfield; border: 1px solid #ccc; padding: 0; margin: 0; text-indent: 0;

  • 3rd party applications API / Framework Q for PHP user site

    - by Ryan
    So we are defining out functional requirements for a user content site and would like to enable: 1) 3rd party developers to develop applications that users can use on their profile 2) Enable users to export content to other sites meaning share their photos on the net. So we were told we need to use APIs for this & it's merely changing data permissions. Is that the only thing we need? Is there a framekwrok we need to build out, or what is the process functioanlly to define out to make these happen? Platform is being built on MySQL and Cake php.

  • Visual Studio 2010 haunted keyboard

    - by Ryan
    It seems the haunted keyboard is back in VS2010 ... after working on a web application for a short while I find that some keys just don't work, or are behaving like certain keys are stuck. This is only in VS, and I am definitely not triggering any keyboard changes in VS or Windows (I have disabled that in Windows) and I have reset my environment settings several times. Aargh! This is so frustrating ... anyone else getting this problem? Is there are solution?

  • Prolem with if function

    - by Ryan
    Hi, something seems to be wrong with the first line of this if function, seems alright to me though. if ($count1 == sizeof($map) && $count2 == sizeof($map[0])){ echo ";"; }else{ echo ","; } This is the error I get (line 36 is the first line of the above line.) Parse error: parse error in C:\wamp\www\game\mapArrayConvertor.php on line 36 EDIT: The OP notes in an answer below that the error was a missing semi-colon on line 35 and not the code included in the question.

  • WordPress > Custom Category Listing by excluding Category Slug matches

    - by Scott B
    I have a group of categories where the slug of each has a prefix "mycat-" and I would like to insert code into my sidebar.php file to create a custom sidebar widget that lists all categories except those preceeded by "mycat-". Any help much appreciated. Example Categories (by slug)... mycat-hidden, mycat-favorites, mycat-nofollow, mycat-noindex, favorites, recently-updated, hot-links, etc Given the above categories, I'd want the listing to be: Favorites Recently Updated Hot Links

  • Return node level of hierarchical xml

    - by Ryan
    In a treeview you can retrieve the level of an item. I am trying to accomplish the same thing with the given input being an object. The XML data I will use for this example would be something like the following <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Testing> <Numbers> <Number val="1"> <Number val="1.1"> <Number val="1.1.1"> <Number val="1.1.2" /> <Number val="1.1.3" /> <Number val="1.1.4" /> </Number> </Number> <Number val="1.2" /> <Number val="1.3" /> <Number val="1.4" /> </Number> <Number val="2" /> <Number val="3" /> <Number val="4" /> </Numbers> <Numbers> <Number val="5" /> <Number val="6" /> <Number val="7" /> <Number val="8" /> </Numbers> </Testing> This one is kicking my butt!

  • Can I suppress or enforce URLs to be prefaced with http:// in ALL browsers?

    - by Ryan Dunlap
    I want to ensure that regardless of what browser a user is in, they all see the EXACT same characters in the URL bar. Most browsers show the preceding protocol type in the URL bar. However, Chrome for example truncates http:// (not sure about https) and starts with the domain name, ie: Chrome: stackoverflow.com/questions/ask Safari: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/ask So, is there a way to either suppress the http:// in all browsers, or even enforce it in all browsers? Preferably suppress.

  • How to foreach through a 2 dimensional array?

    - by Scott Langham
    If I've got a 2 dimensional array. string[,] table = { { "aa", "aaa" }, { "bb", "bbb" } }; And I'd like to foreach through it like this. foreach (string[] row in table) { Console.WriteLine(row[0] + " " + row[1]); } But, I get the error "Can't convert type string to string[] Is there a way I can achieve what I want, i.e. iterate through the first dimension of the array with the iterator variable returning me the 1 dimensional array for that row? Thanks.

  • Hacking the WordPress Category Widget

    - by Scott B
    The default WordPress categories widget does not allow excluding named categories. I've created a plugin which creates adds a Customized category widget to the "Available Widgets" listing which gives me some control over the items I want to exclude. Code is below... <?php /* Plugin Name: Custom Categories Widget Plugin URI: http://mysite.com Description: Removes the Specified Categories from the Default Categories Listing Author: Me Version: 1.0 Author URI: http://mysite.com */ function widget_my_categories() { wp_list_categories('exclude=1'); } function my_categories_init() { register_sidebar_widget(__('Custom Categories Widget'), 'widget_my_categories'); } add_action("plugins_loaded", "my_categories_init"); ?> However, I want the generated code to emulate the same look and feel as the default categories widget (ie, the word "categories" appears as a bullet in my widget, but as an h4 level heading element in the default categories widget. I want the same structure to be applied to my custom widget as the default categories widget has. I'd also like to give the user the options to specify the title of the categories listing (just as they can do in the default categories widget). btw, I'm using id 1 which is the default "uncategorized" category and assigning items to that category that I don't want to appear in the listing. Any help much appreciated! :)

  • How to query for entities with no matching siblings, with LINQ?

    - by Ryan
    I've got the two following entities ... class Citation { public int CitationId { get; set; } public string Identifier { get; set; } } class CitationIdentifier { public int CitationIdentifierId { get; set; } public string Identifier { get; set; } } I'm trying to query for all Citation records where the Identifier property does not match any of the CitationIdentifiers record Identifier property. So, if I have a Citation with an Identifier property containing "foo", but there are no CitationIdentifier records with an Identifier property containing "foo", then I'd like to retrieve that Citation. I'm working with an IDbSet<Citation>. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • How to structure data... Sequential or Hierarchical?

    - by Ryan
    I'm going through the exercise of building a CMS that will organize a lot of the common documents that my employer generates each time we get a new sales order. Each new sales order gets a 5 digit number (12222,12223,122224, etc...) but internally we have applied a hierarchy to these numbers: + 121XX |--01 |--02 + 122XX |--22 |--23 |--24 In my table for sales orders, is it better to use the 5 digital number as an ID and populate up or would it be better to use the hierarchical structure that we use when referring to jobs in regular conversation? The only benefit to not populating sequentially seems to be formatting the data later on in my view, but that doesn't sound like a good enough reason to go through the extra work. Thanks

  • Correct way to textually report the remaining time on a long running process?

    - by Ryan
    So you have a long running process, perhaps with a progress bar, and you want a text estimate of the remaining time, eg: "5 minutes remaining" "30 seconds remaining" etc. If you don't actually want to report clock time (due to accuracy or resolution or update-rate issues) but want to stick to the text summary, what is the correct paradigm? Is "one minute" left displayed from 0 to 60 seconds? or from 1:00 to 1:59? Say there's 1:35 Left - is that "2 minutes remaining" or "1 minute remaining"? Do you just pare it down to "A few minutes left" when you're less than 3 minutes? What is the preferred (least user-frustrating) method?

  • Is it possible to create a branch from a tag in TortoiseSVN without first checking out the tag from

    - by Scott Vierregger
    Our trunk directory contains about 100mb of code and we create tags from the trunk directory. Normally, this is not an issue because a tag takes up no space until you need to use it for something. Since branches are created from tags in SVN, how can I create a branch from a tag wtihout first checking out the tag? It appears I need to do a Tortoise Update from Windows Explorer to get the tag down to my local machine before I can use Tortoise Branch/Tag... to create a branch from it. This seems illogical since we don't make changes to tag folders, and it requires that I check out 100mb of code, only to create a branch, and then check out another 100mb of code in the branch folder, where the changes will actually be made. Ideally, I'd be able to create a branch directly in the repository via RepoBrowser - but I can't see an option for it there. Am I missing something?

  • When using a repository is it possible for a type to return a Func that the repository uses to test for existing entities?

    - by Scott Rickman
    For example given a Factory with a method public static T Save<T>(T item) where T : Base, new() { /* item.Id == Guid.Empty therefore item is new */ if (item.Id == Guid.Empty && repository.GetAll<T>(t => t.Name == item.Name)) { throw new Exception("Name is not unique"); } } how do I create a property of Base (say MustNotAlreadyExist) so that I can change the method above to public static T Save<T>(T item) where T : Base, new() { /* item.Id == Guid.Empty therefore item is new */ if (item.Id == Guid.Empty && repository.GetAll<T>(t.MustNotAlreadyExist)) { throw new Exception("Name is not unique"); } } public class Base { ... public virtual Expression<Func<T, bool>> MustNotAlreadyExist() { return (b => b.Name == name); /* <- this clearly doesn't work */ } } and then how can I override MustNotAlreadyExist in Account : Base public class Account : Base { ... public override Expression<Func<T, bool>> MustNotAlreadyExist() { return (b => b.Name == name && b.AccountCode == accountCode); /* <- this doesn't work */ } ... }

  • Generating new tasks in a foreach loop

    - by Scott Chamberlain
    I know from the codeing guidlines that I have read you should not do for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { Task.Factory.StartNew(() => Console.WriteLine(i)); } Console.ReadLine(); as it will write 5 5's, I understand that and I think i understand why it is happening. I know the solution is just to do for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { int localI = i; Task.Factory.StartNew(() => Console.WriteLine(localI)); } Console.ReadLine(); However is something like this ok to do? Task currentTask = myFirstTask; currentTask.Start(); foreach (Task task in _TaskList) { currentTask.ContinueWith((antecendent) => { if(antecendent.IsCompleated) { task.Start(); } else //do error handling; }); currentTask = task; } } or do i need to do this? Task currentTask = myFirstTask; foreach (Task task in _TaskList) { Task localTask = task; currentTask.ContinueWith((antecendent) => { if(antecendent.IsCompleated) { localTask.Start(); } else //do error handling; }); currentTask = task; }

  • Database PK-FK design for future-effective-date entries?

    - by Scott Balmos
    Ultimately I'm going to convert this into a Hibernate/JPA design. But I wanted to start out from purely a database perspective. We have various tables containing data that is future-effective-dated. Take an employee table with the following pseudo-definition: employee id INT AUTO_INCREMENT ... data fields ... effectiveFrom DATE effectiveTo DATE employee_reviews id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_id INT FK employee.id Very simplistic. But let's say Employee A has id = 1, effectiveFrom = 1/1/2011, effectiveTo = 1/1/2099. That employee is going to be changing jobs in the future, which would in theory create a new row, id = 2 with effectiveFrom = 7/1/2011, effectiveTo = 1/1/2099, and id = 1's effectiveTo updated to 6/30/2011. But now, my program would have to go through any table that has a FK relationship to employee every night, and update those FK to reference the newly-effective employee entry. I have seen various postings in both pure SQL and Hibernate forums that I should have a separate employee_versions table, which is where I would have all effective-dated data stored, resulting in the updated pseudo-definition below: employee id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_versions id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_id INT FK employee.id ... data fields ... effectiveFrom DATE effectiveTo DATE employee_reviews id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_id INT FK employee.id Then to get any actual data, one would have to actually select from employee_versions with the proper employee_id and date range. This feels rather unnatural to have this secondary "versions" table for each versioned entity. Anyone have any opinions, suggestions from your own prior work, etc? Like I said, I'm taking this purely from a general SQL design standpoint first before layering in Hibernate on top. Thanks!

  • MySQL AND alternative for eatch table in a join

    - by Scott
    I have a simple join in a query however I need to have a condition on both of the tables "confirmed='yes'" but if one of the tables doesn't have any that match the query returns with no rows. Database: .----------parties----------. | id - party_id - confirmed | |---------------------------| | 1 1 yes | | 1 2 no | | 1 3 no | +---------------------------+ .-----------events----------. | id - event_id - confirmed | |---------------------------| | 1 1 no | +---------------------------+ Query: SELECT p.party_id, e.event_id FROM parties p LEFT JOIN events e ON p.id=e.id WHERE p.id = '1' AND p.party_id IN (1,2,3) AND e.event_id IN (1) AND p.confirmed='yes' AND e.confirmed='yes' It returns nothing but I want it to return party_id 1 with a empty event_id. I hope this make sense and I not missing anything, Thanks for your help!

  • Do assembly strong names change when new versions of .Net are released?

    - by Ryan Michela
    I'm trying to load an assembly that was installed as part of .Net 3.5 SP1 using Assembly.Load() by referencing its strong name. This works fine on my computer right now, but is it future proof? Will the strong name of core .Net assemblies change when patches are installed or new versions of the .Net framework are released? If so, how can I load an assembly from the GAC without using it's strong name?

  • unit testing methods with arrays as argument

    - by Ryan
    I am porting over some C++ assembly to VB that performs demodulation of various waveforms. I decided to go the unit test route instead of building a test app to get a feel for how testing is performed. The original demodulation code accepts an array that is the waveform along with some other arguments. How should one go about performing a test on something that has an array as an argument? Is it acceptable to generate fake data in a file and read it in at the beginning of the test? On a side note - The original C++ code was written because we were performing math that we couldn't do in VB6 so we had to cross boundaries between C++ and VB6 and arrays were used. Is there a "better" way of handling large amounts of data in the .NET world that us VB6 programmers may not yet be privy to? Or if we aren't crossing that managed/un-managed boundary, should we be representing our data as objects instead? Thanks all!

  • What's the logic flaw in this conditional?

    - by Scott B
    I've created this code branch so that if the permalink settings do no match at least one of the OR conditions, I can execute the "do something" branch. However, I believe there is a flaw in the logic, since I've set permalinks to /%postname%.html and it still tries echo's true; I believe I need to change the ORs to AND, right? if (get_option('permalink_structure') !== "/%postname%/" || get_option('my_permalinks') !== "/%postname%/" || get_option('permalink_structure') !== "/%postname%.html" || get_option('my_permalinks') !== "/%postname%.html")) { //do something echo "true"; }
