• Google adwords API - credit card safety question

- by anon
Hi, Google is asking me to fax credit card xerox in order to activate adwords API in MCC. This really sucks imo... they could have had prepaid option. In any case, my questions: 1) Are there alternatives to this - is there a 3rd party provider who will give me this service without me sending them the credit card info? 2) How secure is it to send my credit card fax via some online fax service? 3) Do you think they will reject the application if I hide my CVV number in the fax? Any other thoughts appreciated :) thanks

• How to Share Files Online with Ubuntu One

- by Chris Hoffman
Ubuntu One, Ubuntu’s built-in cloud file storage service, allows you to make files publically available online or share them privately with others. You can share files over the Internet right from Ubuntu’s file browser. Ubuntu One has two file-sharing methods: Publish, which makes a file publically available on the web to anyone who knows its address, and Share, which shares a folder with other Ubuntu One users. • How to automatically mount hibernated NTFS to read-only?

- by Piotr
Is there any way to set up Ubuntu this way: If I can't mount the filesystem in rw mode, then mount it in ro mode in the same directory. In result I should not come across the notification that the system can't mount the filesystem (Skip or manual fix notification). SO when I start the system I should have my ntfs partitions mounted either in rw or ro mode depends if the windows is hibernated. fstab entry: #/dev/sda7 UUID=D0B43178B43161E0 /media/Dane ntfs defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 "mount -a" result: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda7': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option. I have ubuntu 13.10 and win8. I use uefi secure boot.

• Sound Waves Visualized with a Chladni Plate and Colored Sand [Video]

- by Jason Fitzpatrick
This eye catching demonstration combines a Chladni Plate, four piles of colored sand, and a rubber mallet to great effect–watch as the plate vibrates pattern after pattern into the sand. A Chladni Plate, named after physicist Ernst Chladni, is a steel plate that vibrates when rubbed with a rubber ball-style mallet. Different size balls create different frequencies and each frequency creates a different pattern in the sand placed atop the plate. Watch the video above to see how rubber balls, large and small, change the patterns. • MS Grad Student Project

- by Bernie Perez
I'm a computer science grad student at UCLA specializing in security and/or mobile devices. I'm looking for ideas for my M.S. Project. Something with research and experimenting or testing. I have a few in mind, just wondering if the community has some good thoughts. I'm currently working on a project that deals with offload security related operations to a grid-powered/cloud server to improve battery life on phones or tablets, aka Security-Aware software on mobile devices. I might be able to expand on this for my project... but I'm open to any new types of ideas. I have another idea about secure communications with a peer-2-peer ad-hoc network, but its seems a little dull. Hope this questions is not off topic for this StackExchange. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.

• The Threats are Outside the Risks are Inside

- by Naresh Persaud
In the past few years we have seen the threats against the enterprise increase dramatically. The number of attacks originating externally have outpaced the number of attacks driven by insiders. During the CSO Summit at Open World, Sonny Singh examined the phenomenon and shared Oracle's security story. While the threats are largely external, the risks are largely inside. Criminals are going after our sensitive customer data. In some cases the attacks are advanced. In most cases the attacks are very simple. Taking a security inside out approach can provide a cost effective way to secure an organization's most valuable assets. &lt;/span&gt;border-width:1px 1px 0;margin-bottom:5px&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;&quot;&gt; Cso oow12-summit-sonny-sing hv4 from OracleIDM

• Security of keyctl

- by ftiaronsem
Hello alltogether Today I set up an ecryptfs directory, which is automatically mounted at login via pam. To do so i followed the guide in the ecryptfs readme ecryptfs-readme To sum up, I now have a key stored in the usser session keyring. The first thing I do not understand is why this key is only showing up via keyctl show and not with the gnome-gui "Passwords and encryption keys". The second thing I am curious about is the security. I assume that my passphrase is somehow stored on the harddisk. But how exactly and how secure is this? Thanks in advance

• How do I open up firewall while keeping it safe?

- by d3vid
Since I've installed Firestarter I have encountered connectivity issues that are all resolved by disabling the firewall. I'd prefer to have the firewall running and allow all the traffic I normally use: Wired network + wireless network, whichever I'm connected to, or both (1) OpenVPN VirtualBox internal network Samba (for accessing shared Windows folders and sharing folders to Windows) (2) BitTorrent And everything else I use that I can't think of :) All the above works without a firewall. I thought Linux was super secure (I update regularly). Do I really need it? (1) I used the Firestarter wizard and selected wlan0 as my primary connection, now whenever I plug in a network cable, I lose all connectivity. Should I just redo the wizard for eth0, or will I then lose wlan0? (2) If it makes a difference I'm sharing a directory that I share between local users using bindfs.
