  I took my old computer (AMD 5600+, 2GB RAM, 880gt, 250GB SATA, etc) and decided to jump and try Ubuntu for the first time. I have very very little knowledge (Red Hat when I was younger) with Linux in general. My main desktop is Windows 7 and my plan is to use the Ubuntu computer as a file server sort of speak. I want to be able to setup back up schedules from my Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC (plan on leaving this on 24/7 to double as a Seedbox) How do I go on to doing this?

  I have a website which I am using google analytics to track visitors and track our banner campaigns. We're are promoting 'Purchase Ticket' buttons on our website which push visitors to a third party website who sell and distribute our tickets. The url on all the 'Purchase Ticket' buttons are the same through out the site... Example: http://ticketmaestro.com/events/my-event-2012 In the analytic control panel, is it possible so set something up, where I create a path-to-destination using the above example url? ...and then after this is setup: I want to be able to monitor the path visitors are taking from when they reach the site - to when they click the 'Purchase Ticket' button.   On a dual monitor setup, how can I set which monitor the ALT-TAB (or ALT+`) interfaces appear? Right now, it's flying all over the place, possibly based on on which app is focused? I'm not sure. In any case this is not useful to me. I spend 80% of my time staring at the monitor in front of me, and sometimes I turn my head to the left to look at logs, or whatever. • Java and Eclipse setup properly, how do I install JOGL or LWJGL?

  I have my Java environment installed alongside Eclipse, and I was successfully able to create and run a new project (simple System.out.println("Yay I work!"); I have the OpenGL SuperBible, and I primarily want to code 3D things (I'll take my time using the book to learn how to draw shapes in 3D space, etc..) Can you help me get setup with OpenGL in Java? I dont really need LWJGL, although I WILL make games eventually. I just can't even figure out with all of these terrible (and old) tutorials floating around on the net how to install either JOGL or LWJGL. If you can give me a hand with that, I'd appreciate it.   I try to use rockmongo, to connect to our cluster. Our setup is a setup of two shards each consisting of a replicaset. I try to connect to the mongos instance and while rockmongo connects I get an error when trying to list the dbs: Execute failed:not master function (){ return db.getCollectionNames(); } This has something to do with the replica sets and everybody points to: $MONGO["servers"][$i] = array("replicaSet" => "xxxxx"); This is all fine, but I have two replicasets and as far as I understand I should connect to the mongos instance and not directly to the members of the set. So how does one use rockmongo to connect to a mongo sharded setup with replicasets?

• Windows Server 2003/Exchange 2007: How to setup public domain mail.foo.com to route to internal exch

  Good day, I have an internal Exchange Server 2007 and a Windows Server 2003 domain. At this point in time I have an external DNS setup (DynDNS 29.95 service) to resolve foo.com to my singular public IP address then it gets routed to external facing site. I would like to know how to setup POP on mail.foo.com and SMTP on smtp.foo.com, and more importantly, what needs to be setup in Exchange server to allow for this to happen. My end state is to send email through smtp.foo.com and receive mail on mail.foo.com. As of now, when I create a user within Exchange the default email address is [email protected], and I would like it to be [email protected]. Thank you and I appreciate the help as I am a .NET developer trying to do sys admin work, and it is MUCH harder than I have ever imagined, my hat is off to all sys admins and IT pros.

  Hopefully this is a straightforward question, but googling has proved fruitless (and frustrating, to say the least). Links to good documentation would be greatly appreciated. Here's the problem. We have a web application with an associated ActiveX control. (The control wraps a crufty old MFC application if it matters.) Moving forward, we expect to release multiple versions of this application, and each will have a corresponding version of the control. If someone accesses two versions of the web application, then that user should end up with two different versions of the control on his system. (The controls should play nice and not clobber each other.) In addition, I want to automate this process. Our system has a global version number that applies to all components. If we change the version number, the next build should produce a new version of the control. What's the best way to do this?

• Where to find other versions of Opera browser as deb packages?

  I used Opera mainly for the Unite feature now to be abandoned. It is missing in v. 12. Some say its features will re-emerge in future extensions etc. Until then, Unite is still accessible in v. 11. Where do I get the v.11 deb? P.S. In fact it seems that opera unite (at least in its older form) is dying while I am editing this question. Access to opera-unite applications from within opera-unite is poor or absent. This issue is obscure to me for now (31.08.2012) because yesterday I have installed v12 in Windows OS (with opera-unite and basic applications - file sharing and media player - already installed) and it is still working (server is working). The v12 Ubuntu version came today without unite, and after installing v11 (which has unite) I could not get applications (file sharing, etc). But they are still available: here and after downloading these files which have te .ua extension, they can be installed by opening them with Opera (v.11) But as opera-unite is no longer supported, it is possible that the server that provides the file sharing etc will soon be unaccessible. Even if that is the case the question should maybe not be closed at it has a general usefulness independently of the unite issue.

• Ubuntu Preseed set Norwegian Keyboard?

  It's been a couple of days now that I am trying to make a fully automated unattended installation. I managed to make it work with Ubuntu/Cobbler and a preseed file, but I cannot set the correct keyboard layout which is Norwegian in this case. I am doing the tests on a virtual machine and when I am going with a normal manual installation (no preseed) everything is working fine. When I am using the preseed file, I always end up with an "English (US)" keyboard no matter the many different options I have tried. I can change it manually with the "dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration" command, but that's not the case. It should be handled automatically using the preseed file. I am using DEBCONF_DEBUG=5 when the grub is loading, and as I see in "/var/log/installer/syslog" file after the installation has finished, the preseeding commands are accepted. Can anyone help on this?   Direct Question: I want to enable Perl to send emails. What package(s) should I install to setup a simplistic email server: no need for incoming, only outgoing. I can forward through gmail's SMTP if that's best? Background: I am programmer with a nightly build script written in Perl. I would like to email myself the results of my nightly builds (especially if there's an error). I've read about the perl package Mail::Sendmail briefly, but if something else is more appropriate, please tell me!! I tried the simple aptget install sendmail, but that doesn't seem to work. I really don't understand the specifics, but as I understand, I need to forward the mail through an existing SMTP server -- so I can use my gmail account if need be (that's where I want to send the logs anyway). • Why are two indicator-network versions being worked on?

  Some months ago, on the road to Ubuntu Maverick, a new system indicator, network (with connman as a backend), started to be developed. The plan was to get it into UNE and release it with no notifcation area. Unfortunately it didn't make it into the final version. However, continued efforts are still being made to improve it, and I'm getting regular updates. From a blueprint from the last UDS, I read that the plan was to ship no notification area and only indicators. For that, it was defined that nm-applet (backend: NetworkManager) should be ported to the appindicator library. Today I discovered that those efforts are going on and a initial version is available for testing, available from Matt Trudel PPA (Natty only). So, my questions is, to whoever has the necessary info: wouldn't it be easier to join efforts and concentrate the work in just one version (probably NetworkManager backend, as that's the official plan), instead of breaking those efforts apart and hampering both testing and developing? Both indicators are being developed by Canonical engineers, and that really doesn't make much sense. So, any Canonical engineer willing to clarify this?

This topic, however, warrants a quick mention in the blog since I know it's been affecting many users recently. For customers using the Client/Server Deployment of AutoVue, users that had upgraded their client Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to version 1.6.0_19 or later suddenly noticed that their 3D files were opening blank in AutoVue. This issue was due to a change in JRE version 1.6.0_19, and the AutoVue team now offers a patch to address the issue in AutoVue version 20.0.0. The patch number is 10268316, is available through the My Oracle Support portal, and is described further in KM Note 1104821.1. We'll mention it again in our next Support newsletter, and the AutoVue team will target to roll the same fix into the next available release of the product.

  i have some problem. First i upgraded ubuntu to 12.04 and all of packages. But after that i have a lot of problems so i decided to downgrade to 11.10. After i did that i have two kernels 3.2.x and 3.0.x. I found a lot of solutions how to remove older kernels but i have no idea how to remove newer kernel ? I dont see 3.2 kernel when im using a 3.0 kernel. But i see it in grub. When i type uname -r in terminal i see only 3.0.x kernel which im using at the moment.. Any solutions to delete 3.2 kernel ?

• Is Query Performance different for different versions of SQL Server?

  I have fired 3 update queries in my stored procedure for 3 different tables. Each table contains almost 2,00,000 records and all records have to be updated. I am using indexing to speed up the performance. It quite working well with SQL Server 2008. stored procedure takes only 12 to 15 minutes to execute. (updates almost 1000 rows in 1 second in all three tables) But when I run same scenario with SQL Server 2008 R2 then stored procedure takes more time to complete execution. its about 55 to 60 minutes. (updates almost 100 rows in 1 second in all three tables). I couldn't find any reason or solution for that. I have also tested same scenario with SQL Server 2012. but result is same as above. Please give suggestions.

• Can't read .cso files but I can read their .hlsl versions?

  Well I've been trying to read a .cso file to use as a shader for a DirectX program I'm currently making. Problem is no matter how I implemented a way to read the file it never worked. And after fidgeting around I discover that it's only the .cso files I can't read. I can read anything else (which means it works) even their .hlsl files. Which is strange because the .hlsl (high level shader language) files are supposed to turn into .cso (compiled shader object) files. What I'm currently doing is: vector<byte> Read(string File){ vector<byte> Text; fstream file(File, ios::in | ios::ate | ios::binary); if(file.is_open()){ Text.resize(file.tellg()); file.seekg(0 , ios::beg); file.read(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&Text[0]), Text.size()); file.close(); } return Text; }; If I then implement it. Read("VertexShader.hlsl"); //Works Read("VertexShader.cso"); //Doesn't Works?!?! And I need the .cso version of the shader to draw my sexy triangles. Without it my life and application will never continue and I have no idea what could be wrong. (I've also asked this at stack overflow but still no answers.)

If pkg-config was correct, then it is best *** to remove the old version of GLib.
