• How best to backup 6x Win2k3 Servers

  We have a external HP LTO3 tape drive. It needs to backup 6 Windows 2003 machines every night. Servers are HP DL380 G3 and the tape drive is attached locally to one of them via SCSI. On a budget of $0, and a goal of keeping-it-simple, what is going to be the best way to backup these machines? What software to use? NT Backup? Or does HP have something better for free? We don't need image backups - file system + system state will be adequate. Do we need to copy the files to be backed up onto the machine with the tape drive attached? Edit: Let me ask a more focussed question: Would you use NT Backup or something else? No soap boxing please, we've after some quick advice from someone who's used a similar setup.

• Best choice for off-site backup: dd vs tar

  I have two 1TB single-partition hard disks configured as RAID1, of which I would like to make an off-site backup on a third disk, which I am still to buy. The idea is to store the backup at a relative's house, considerably far away from my place, in the hope that all the information will be safe in the case of a global thermonuclear apocalypse. Of course, this backup would be well encrypted. What I still have to decide is whether I am going to simply tar the entire partition or, instead, use dd to create an image of the disks. Is there any non-trivial difference between these two approaches that I could be overlooking? This off-site backup would be updated no more than two or three times a year, in the best of the cases, so performance should not be a factor to be pondered at all. What, and why, would you use if you were me? dd, tar, or a third option?

• Windows 7 backup network restore: "The network location cannot be reached, 0x800704CF"

  When I try to restore from a backup image, I get this error. After I enter the network address (\\10.0.0.1\backup or \\z\backup), the wizard presents me with the network login dialog, which leads me to believe that it can connect to the network (yes, the share is password protected). I decided to install Windows 7, since I thought that I could restore the image from Windows. The restore process in Windows can locate the backups, but to do an image restore it needs to reboot to the wizard above. Which of course gives the very same error. This is what \\z\backup looks like. Please help, I'm getting desperate. Update: Forgot to mention that the NAS is running Ubuntu, if that's relevant.

What are your advice and comments over backupexec vray or arcserve choice ? I know that arcserve have a lower price. I used backup exec for some years but I found it pretty complicated. Thank you.

• Restore single users Exchange 2003 mailbox from backup

  I take weekly backups of exchange in full. I also take complete weekly backups of the entire server. It is a Server 2003 R2 with AD and Exchange 2003 all on one box. One users inbox has disappeared. She has 19000+ junk items now. It is possible the inbox got mixed into the junk. Regardless it is such a huge mess she is not going to go through all of that.... I want to restore he mailbox from the backup. I followed this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823176 I had to use Method 3. I have a VM of Server 2003 R2 with exchange but I am having failures on the restore from NT backup. The backup log just states to check the application log.... Application log points to backup log... Only info Is failed to restore Only thing different is the computer name... The only error I can find is in the Application log. Information Store Database not found All others just say that the backup failed. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. UPDATE I have successfully proven I can restore the DB into a recovery storage group in my VM Unfortunately due to the actual account being on a different store I am unable to do the recovery... Error is The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed. The MAPI provider failed. Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000 Two questions QUESTION 1 Should I repeat my steps on the production exchange server in the recover storage group? then merge into her original account? I am just concerned with doing recovery like that on the live server.... QUESTION 2 Is there any way I can extract her .PST from my recovery VM and then import into her outlook? On the Recovery VM: I restored the raw DB from my full backup repaired it with ESEUTIL then mounted in the recovery store. Was thinking I could just repeat and mount in the main store on the VM? • Exchange 2013 Virtual Machine: Backup just mailboxes and clear logs

  I have a Windows Server 2012 machine running Exchange 2013 running as a KVM virtual machine. For my VM guests, I do full image based backups from the host, so that I can quickly restore to any host server simply by copying over the disk image files. This means I don't need a nightly full system backup. That being said, without running a VSS Full Backup, the Exchange logs get massive (Specifically, the performance logs which are 500MB a day). In addition, I would also like to have a nightly backup of just the mail database. What is the best way to accomplish this? A full backup of the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15 folder as I found in one tutorial did not clear out the logs. Thanks, Ben

  Hi there! As I have to bring my phone to a shop for repair, I want to backup my contacts, calenders and text-messages. My Nokia connects perfectly through Bluetooth with iSync. One baddy, however is that text-messages are nowhere to be found or for the matter of fact, impossible to backup from the phone using iSync. Is there a graceful, free application for Mac that would be able to backup (and later restore) the messages on my phone? The worst possible scenario would include me to write a script that uses the Hayes command set and kermit-ize all SMS's (hundreds at least), so a nice click-and-play solution would be nice to know about. I don't consider applications like Parallel/CrossOver as a solution, as PC Suite is quite buggy with those (which does have the functionality to backup SMS and e-mail). Many thanks!

  I'm really enjoying Cobian 11, but am fairly new to it. My question is this. I back up a pretty large folder on a regular basis. I started off by doing a Full backup, and have followed that monthly using differential backups. I was told that, to restore my computer after a crash, I need to copy back the original full backup AND copy back the latest differential over the full. That's fine. However, over the months there are quite a few large differential backups dated between the original Full one and the latest differential one. To free space on my backup HD, can I every now and then delete the differential backups that lie between the original Full and the latest differential, and just leave the original Full and the latest differential backup on the HD?

• Disaster recovery backup of files/photos for personal use

  I'm looking for the best method to store a backup of important files and 5+ years of digital photos that is safe from some type of fire/flood disaster in my home. I'm looking for: Affordable: Less than $100/yr or first-time cost. Reliable: At least a smaller chance of failing than there is of fire or flood Easy for initial backup and to add to, and at least semi-easy to recover. I recently purchased a small home safe for physical vitals. It was inexpensive, solid, and is fire/water safe. If I had a physical copy of the digital files, the safe would work fine for this, but I don't know what to store in it that adequately meets the requirements above. Hard drive - I read that the danger of it not spinning up makes a hard drive a bad choice for this type of storage, although it was my first thought and would definitely be the simplest choice - very easy to take out once a month and add files to. DVDs - Way too much of a hassle for both backup and restore. Tape - No idea on the affordability of this option Online - Given that I have at least 300GB already and ever-increasing megapixels means ever-bigger files, and my ISP upload is about 2Mb at the best, this just doesn't sound like a good option for me, but I could be convinced. Other - Have I missed something? Also, I'm already covered both for sync between computers (Dropbox) and a nightly backup of these files (External HDD). The problem with the nightly backup is obviously that it's always with the computer and in a disaster would be destroyed along with it. Is anyone else doing something similar? Is the HDD as poor of a choice as I read, or is it a feasible option? Maybe two to reduce the likelihood of failure?

• Reliable backup software for windows network/samba shares.

  Hi All, I have a Win2003 server that works as a pdc for a number of XP boxes, and a couple related FreeBSD boxes. I need to back up roaming profiles, non-roaming profiles via network shares, local hard drive data, and files on the FreeBSD boxes via samba shares. I have tried Genie Backup Manager and Backup4All pro, and both have excellent features, but both also begin to fail disastrously with more than a few days use. Mostly, the errors seem to have been from the backup catalog getting out of synch with itself. Whatever it is, there is no excuse for a backup software that says it backed up files when it really didn't, or the log saying it backed up exactly the same file 10,000 times in a single run, or flat-out crashing, or any of the other myriad problems I've run into with these. Really sad for products that fill such an important need. Anyway, does anyone know of a backup software that works reliably and can do the following? Scheduled backups for multiple jobs, without a user logged in. Backup from local hard drives or network shares. Incremental backups. Thanks!   We're in the middle of P2V'ing most of the network, so the current backup method is likely the worst - the backup agent is still installed on the guest OSs, and the backup device is dutifully pulling them onto tape, one file at a time. I suspect there's a clever way to script (PowerShell?) a suspend on the VMs, then backup of the .vhd files, and unsuspend the VMs. This seems like it would provide big speed benefits, while losing file-level restore (might be best for things like DCs and app servers). What methods/policies have you hammered out?

The second problem that my MySQL password dosen't work because of a Plesk bug and i get the password from "/etc/psa/.psa.shadow".   As many of you know, I run the SQL South West user group and we are currently in full flow preparing to stage the UK’s second SQL Saturday. The SQL Saturday spotlight is going to fall on Exeter in March 2013. We have full-day session on Friday 8th with some truly amazing speakers giving their insights and experience into some vital areas of working with SQL Server: Dave Ballantyne and Dave Morrison – TSQL and internals Christian Bolton and Gavin Payne – Mission critical data platforms on Windows Server 2012 Denny Cherry – SQL Server Security André Kamman – Powershell 3.0 for SQL Server Administrators and Developers Mladen Prajdic – From SQL Traces to Extended Events – The next big switch. A number of people have claimed that the choice is too good and they’d have trouble selecting just one session to attend. I can see how this is a problem but hope that they make their minds up quickly. The venue is a bespoke conference suite in the centre of Exeter but has limited capacity so we are working on a first-come first-served basis. All the session details and booking and travel information can be found on our user group website. The Saturday will be a day of free, 50 minute sessions on all aspects SQL Server from almost 30 different speakers. If you would like to submit a session then get a move on as submissions close on 8th January 2013 (That’s less than a month away). • Idea to develop a caching server between IIS and SQL Server

  I work on a few high traffic websites that all share the same database and that are all heavily database driven. Our SQL server is max-ed out and, although we have already implemented many changes that have helped but the server is still working too hard. We employ some caching in our website but the type of queries we use negate using SQL dependency caching. We tried SQL replication to try and kind of load balance but that didn't prove very successful because the replication process is quite demanding on the servers too and it needed to be done frequently as it is important that data is up to date. We do use a Varnish web caching server (Linux based) to take a bit of the load off both the web and database server but as a lot of the sites are customised based on the user we can only do so much. Anyway, the reason for this question... Varnish gave me an idea for a possible application that might help in this situation. Just like Varnish sits between a web browser and the web server and caches response from the web server, I was wondering about the possibility of creating something that sits between the web server and the database server. Imagine that all SQL queries go through this SQL caching server. If it's a first time query then it will get recorded, and the result requested from the SQL server and stored locally on the cache server. If it's a repeat request within a set time then the result gets retrieved from the local copy without the query being sent to the SQL server. The caching server could also take advantage of SQL dependency caching notifications. This seems like a good idea in theory. There's still the same amount of data moving back and forward from the web server, but the SQL server is relieved of the work of processing the repeat queries. I wonder about how difficult it would be to build a service that sort of emulates requests and responses from SQL server, whether SQL server's own caching is doing enough of this already that this wouldn't be a benefit, or even if someone has done this before and I haven't found it? I would welcome any feedback or any references to any relevant projects.
