• Com server build using Python on 64-bit Windows 7 machine

It has worked fine on 32 bit Windows but not working on 64 bit Windows 7. Here are the Python modules I have created for testing: test_icon_overlay.py: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0002.obj ) com server created in Python for icon overlay which adds check mark overlay icon(C:\icons\test.ico) on "C:\icons" folder setup_VI.py: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0003.obj ) setup file which creates test_icon_overlay.dll for distribution. icons.zip: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0001.zip ) for testing you should extract icons.zip inside C:\ Icon overlay appears on C:\icons folder when I execute python test_icon_overlay.py on Windows command prompt and restarts explorer.exe. But its not working with the dll file created using setup_VI.py I have created dll file using python setup_VI.py py2exe and then tried to register it using regsvr32 test_icon_overlay.dll. Registration fails with windows error message Error 0x80040201 while registering shell extension. Then I turned on logger in Python27/Lib/site-packages/py2exe/boot_com_servers.py and here is the traceback which I am getting in comerror.txt on regsvr32 test_icon_overlay.dll PATH is ['C:\\root\\avalon\\module\\sync\\python\\src\\dist\\library.zip'] Traceback (most recent call last): File "boot_com_servers.py", line 37, in <module> pywintypes.error: (126, 'GetModuleFileName', 'The specified module could not be found.') Also, I saw that installation of pywin32-214.win-amd64-py2.7 on 64-bit Windows 7 finish with the error message: Snapshot close failed in file object destructor: sys.excepthook is missing lost sys.stderr Is there anything which I am doing wrong? Any help on this is highly appreciated.

  I want to build a (don't know what to call it other than) bread crumb bar at the top of the page, kinda like at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/software, y'know, at the top of the page, the horizontal, light grey bar that looks like so [home icon] | Shop Mac | Mac Software Help | Account | Cart Actually, I've got that bar working, with a curved, square left edge, the intermediate chevrons, and the curved, square right edge. So, my bar looks like so [ Home > Foo > Bar > Baz ] I have little graphics fragments that make up the [ and the and the ] and the middle parts. The only problem is, I want the right edge to be at the right edge of my page. So, the above bar should look like so [ Home > Foo > Bar > Baz ] I want to have a variable number of entries in my bread crumb bar... so, I could have "Home, Foo, Bar, Baz" or I could have "Home, Foo" or "Home, Foo, Bar, Baz, Qux" and so on. In other words, I want the right edge of my bar to be dynamically long enough to extend to the edge of my web page. Suggestions?

• How to prepopulate an Outlook MailItem and avoiding a com Exception from the object model guard

  Hi, I work for a company that develops a CRM tool and offers integration with MS Office(2003 & 2007) from windows XP to 7. (I'm working using Win7) My task is to call an Outlook instance (using C#) from this CRM tool when the user wants to send an email and prepopulate with data of the CRM tool (email, recipient, etc..) All of this already works just fine. The problem I'm having is that Outlook's "object model guard" is throwing com Exception (Operation aborted (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004004 (E_ABORT))) the moment I try to read a protected value from the mailItem (such as mail.bodyHTML). Example Snippet: using MSOutlook = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook; //untrusted Instance _outlook = new MSOutlook.Application(); MSOutlook.MailItem mail = (MSOutlook.MailItem)_outlook.CreateItem(MSOutlook.OlItemType.olMailItem); //this where the Exception occurs string outlookStdHTMLBody = mail.HTMLBody; I've done quite a bit of reading and know that my Outlook Instance (derived by using new Application) is considered untrusted and therefore the "omg" kicks in. I do have a workaround for development: I'm running VS2010 as Administrator and if I run Outlook as Administrator as well - all is good. I suppose this is due to them having the same integrity levels(high) and the UAC(?) is not complaining. But that just ain't the way to go for deployment. Now the question is: Is there a way to obtain a trusted instance of Outlook so that I can avoid this exception? I've already read that when developing an Office Add-In using VSTO one can obtain a trusted Instance from the OnComplete event and/or using "ThisAddin" But I "merely" want to start an outlook instance and preopulate it, and do not want to develop an Add-In since this is not the requirement. And to make it clear - I have no problem with pop ups informing the user that outlook is being accessed - I just want to get rid of the exception! So how can I get around this problem using code? • Media Kind in iTunes COM for Windows SDK

  I recently found out about the awesomeness of the iTunes COM for Windows SDK. I am using Python with win32com to talk to my iTunes library. Needless to say, my head is in the process of exploding. This API rocks. I have one issue though, how do I access the Media Kind attribute of the track? I looked through the help file provided in the SDK and saw no sign of it. If you go into iTunes, you can modify the track's media kind. This way if you have an audiobook that is showing up in your music library, you can set the Media Kind to Audiobook and it will appear in the Books section in iTunes. Pretty nifty. The reason I ask is because I have a whole crap load of audiobooks that are showing up in my LibraryPlaylist. • Installing Silverstripe on 000webhost.com (free web host)

  Hi I'm trying to learn how to work Silverstripe so I extracted the tar file to my free hosting account. I then went on install.php and edited the permissions to meet the requirements set out in install.php but I still get two warnings from the 'webserver configuration' section: I can't tell what webserver you are running. Without Apache I can't tell if mod_rewrite is enabled. I can't tell whether mod_rewrite is running. You may need to configure a rewriting rule yourself. I looked in phpinfo() and mod_rewrite appears to be installed. I contacted the web host and they said it was to do with virtual directory paths, and I should add 'RewriteBase /' to the top of my .htaccess file in the public_html directory. However I did this and still had the same problem. The install.php script says that I can install it even with these warnings but when I press 'install' it just refreshes the install.php page. It doesn't even overwrite the .htaccess file. 000webhost.com says they have successfully installed Silverstripe on their user accounts without much configuration but I can't seem to find out how. EDIT: I managed to get to the next page but now there is another warning which is stopping it installing: Friendly URLs are not working. This is most likely because mod_rewrite isn't configuredcorrectly on your site. Please check the following things in your Apache configuration; you may need to get your web host or server administrator to do this for you: * mod_rewrite is enabled * AllowOverride All is set for your directory I also get this error message from the server: Warning: unlink(mysite/_config.php) [function.unlink]: Permission denied in /home/a2716553/public_html/install.php on line 701

• Unregistering COM dll with a C# Setup Project

  Hi All. I've been stuck on this one for a while. I'll try explain in the simplest terms and at the best of my knowledge. I will honour any help. I've got a C# project which uses a VB6 compiled ActiveX DLL that I'm constantly updating. I compile the setup project, send it to the client and they run the setup. When building the updated setup project, I would increase the 'Version' of the setup project so it wouldn't bother with 'Another version is already installed'. What started happening after a few updates I began to notice the DLL would not be updated to the new version in the installer. The client computer had the original DLL both installed and registered. First symptom: method not found exceptions from the client C# code. This is not a shared DLL and only this application needs it. I've noticed that when uninstalling the application (through the usual procedure) the DLL is also not removed from the application folder although I would set this file's property 'Permanent' to false. The registration entries in the registry are mantained also. I do update in VS6.0 the version of the DLL (usually increase the build number) before building it. Then in VS2008, I remove it from the References, and add it again from the 'Browse tab', without re-registering it on my dev machine and adding it from the COM tab. I've thought of these options. Custom step in Setup project to regsvr32.exe /u 'hardcoded path of my dll' at uninstall (ugly) Somehow find out how the 'Isolate' property can work for me without registering Find out how to execute setup project 'Conditions' that would actually check the version of the library and to update the file accordingly at every install) Any help would be incredibly welcome.

  I'm trying to install the mumble-server package using apt-get install mumble-server on Ubuntu 11.10 Server Edition on Rackspace Cloud. Problem is it can't find dependencies it should have found because they exist on launchpad.net? Dependencies message: Reading package lists... • Accessing functions in a swf-file through javascript [chatroulette.com]

  Lately I have been interested in the code behind chatroulette.com. As you probably know it is a peer-to-peer webcam-chat-service written in actionscript, as I understand. What i have been wondering about is weather its possible to extract the ip-address of whomever you are currently communicating with. I have seen services that do that, but they require that you install a program that runs alongside on your computer sniffing UDP-packages. I was wondering if there was a simpler method. What I do know is that the javascript on the page communicates with the application via "ExternalInterface". On this area I am pretty much a novice but according to my limited understanding you cant get information from the flash-application unless you have configured a listener for a call from javascript and then attach a callback to that event. Is this correct or can you access public functions and variables directly through javascript? There is for example a public function like this: public function get outgoingAddress():String{ return (this.__info.outgoingAddress); } Can it be accessed directly through javascript? If it cant be done so easily, is it possible to decompile the .swf-file, change it (add some functions) and recompile it and run it instead? I am hoping someone can satisfy my curiosity here.   Hello, The other day i just accidently visited the site myheritage.com. I was just wondering, how they must have created one? Can anybody tell me what can be their database design? and if possible, algorithm that we can use to generate such a tree? Generating simple binary tree is very easy using recursion. But if you have a look at the site(if you have time please make account on it and add few nodes to feel) when we add son to a father, it's mother is automatically added(if you don't add explicitly). Mother's family tree is also generated side by side and many such fancy things are happening. In a simple binary tree we have a root node and then many nodes below it. Thus we cannot show wife and husband in the tree and then show a line from wife and husband to child. In spare time, can anybody discuss what can be it's database design and the recursive algorithm that we can follow to generate it? I hope i am not asking too much from you :).

• live.com setting can't be changed

  I'm on mail.live.com where, in the upper left corner it says "Windows Live™" and to the right of that it says "Hotmail([number])" "Messenger" "SkyDrive" "|" "MSN." Directly under the "Windows Live™," there is a square, bluish/gray avatar (with a generic, rotund peop with a head and trunk and arms). To the right of that there is a field (with a subtle, barely perceptible speech bubble-like arrow emanating from the avatar). But there's a word inside that field that I cannot get rid of. Coincidentally I think it's the same word I used as a search term a while back, having meant to put the search term in the "Search email and more" bing field on the other side of the screen. (Even that would have been by mistake because I had been aiming for the e-mail search field.) But it remains in the field connected to the avatar--and moreover the field is editable to the limited extent that a cursor can be placed into the field with a mouse click; the word just can't be deleted. I don't know if the avatar should be there either, but I'd rather have just simply that than the word next to it continuously there for time immemorial. If I click into the field hoping to delete the word, I'm confronted with options along the bottom of the same field (now expanded by my mouse click): "Add: Photo Link Document," and a button that says "Share" and an [X] to reduce the field back to its default state--which still contains the word I'm trying to delete.

• How to pair users? (Like Omegle.com)

  Hi, I'm trying to do an Omegle.com clone script, basically for learning purposes. I'm doing it in PHP/MySQL/AJAX. I'm having problems finding two users and connecting them. The purpose of omegle is connecting two users "randomly". What I'm doing right now is the following: When a user enters the website a session is assigned. There are 3 states for each session/user (Normal,Waiting,Chatting) At first the user has state Normal and a field "connected_to" = NULL If the users clicks the START button, a state of "Waiting" is assigned. Then it looks for another user with state Waiting, if doesn't find one then it keeps looping, waiting for the "connected_to" to change. The "connected_to" will change when other user click START and then find another user waiting and updates the sessions accordingly. Now this have several problems, like: A user only can be connected to one user at a time. In omegle you can open more than one chat simultaneously. I don't know if this is the best way. About the chat, each user is polling the events from the server with AJAX calls, I saw that omegle, instead of several HTTP requests each second (let's say), does ONE request and wait for an answer, that means that the PHP script is looping indefinitely until gets an answer.I did this using set_time_limit(30) each time the loop is started. Then when the Ajax call is done start over again. Is this approach correct? I will appreciate a LOT your answers, Thank you, Carlos

  Hi, My application needs to serve images hosted in travelnow.com (ie. this image) but the application only allow images hosted on a secured server (ie. https). What are my options? TravelNow's suggestion is as follows. How do I do this? Akamai image servers are not secure. Therefore you are unable to serve any of the image urls with a secure HTTPS URL. If you need to serve an image with HTTPS, you must temporarily save the image to your own secure server. This is suggested only for images to be saved as you use them or need them temporarily on the secure page. The hotel images file available from the Affiliate Center provides up to 1.5 million URLs at any time for all properties storing images in the Akamai system. It is not recommended or advised to store all files in advance on your own system since properties change and update images frequently. Although we are not responsible for the images each property stores on the Akamai system, YOU will be responsible for any customer issues arising from displaying outdated or saved image files on your own pages.   when saving an object to database using hibernate, sometimes it fails because certain fields of the object exceed the maximum varchar length defined in the database. There force I am using the following approach: 1. attempt to save 2. if getting an DataException, then I truncate the fields in the object to the max length specified in the db definition, then try to save again. However, in the second save after truncation. • Transfer .com domain to GoDaddy - websites running on same domain - 3 weeks left until expiration, 2 days left web hosting

  Our company purchased this abc.com domain from a local registrar. The domain will expire in about 3 weeks. We have our main websites running on this abc.com domain and they cannot be down for too long. The web hosting service will end in 2 days. Our websites are already hosted and they are up and running on Amazon EC2. We would like to transfer the domain to GoDaddy now or as soon as possible. (since we have many other domains there and we belive GoDaddy will be better in long-term considering the prices and the features it offers) There are many questions on the decision to transfer the domain to GoDaddy: 1) Cost and time required to move out of our local registrar? This is currently unknown as I'm still trying to retrieve the agreement we have with them 2) How does the 3 week time left until expiration of the domain matters here? Should we wait until the domain expires and then purchase in through GoDaddy? How long would such process take as I suppose our websites will be down during that time? Any other drawbacks? 3) What can I do to ensure our websites will continue functioning regardless of the domain transfer process? It seems the actual registrar here is enom.com and the local registrar here just partners with it I suppose I should then park the abc.com domain with enom.com and make changes to DNS settings so that our websites can continue to be hosted on EC2 as normal. How long does it normally take the domain to be transferred to GoDaddy completely? Is it even possible at all to keep our websites are up and running during the whole domain transfer process? Apologies that I'm throwing many questions at the same time here. It's rather last minutes and I suddenly realised there are too many unknown risks.

• Finally found a replacement for my.live.com&hellip;

  As I had alluded to before, the transition of http://my.live.com/ to http://my.msn.com/ caused me serious grief. I've been an RSS addict for many, many years and I found the my.live.com UI to be the ultimate RSS reader and gateway to the web. It had been my home page for a long time.  My.msn has a LONG way to go before it matches the elegance and performance of my.live. The site I ended up going with is http://www.netvibes.com/ .   It’s the closest thing I could find that could do four column tiles with a reasonable amount of information density .  I’d still prefer a lot less “chrome” and better use of space, but it’s as close as I’m going to get… One feature I really do like about netvibes, is the pagination feature.  The built in feed reader is also quite nice… All-in-all, I’d recommend netvibes…

• Having good domain name and using domain aliases ( I use notlong.com)?

  I use only free servers and after creating my website: http://pundaquit.republika.pl I decided to make access to that domain by simple domain name . I decided to use domain alias http://notlong.com/ service and have simple domain name http://pundaquit.notlong.com The second advantage of using alias here was to be independant from my file host which I will have to change. I haven't found a better alias service like notlong, because notlong.com is easy to remember. After that I encounter many problems: * most of forums or social services treat notlong adress as a spam, * Bing so far hvn't accepted http://pundaquit.notlong.com domain and others. Is it another way to have good free domain name? How about the situation when your hosting server will inform you to expire? Only a lasting layer of domain aliases make you independant from the real file hosts.

• SEO blog Indexing: wordpress.com subdomain vs a registered domain?

  I've used WordPress for a few of my client's sites, mostly small businesses and eCommerce sites. I have found through Google Analytics as well as the All in One Webmaster plugin that when it comes to social media, using WordPress is a surefire way of getting your site indexed by Google and occasionally Bing and Yahoo. Since I am a heavy WP user, I'd like to contribute by registering a dot WordPress domain for my portfolio. When using a WP installation concurrently with a WP domain, e.g. myportfolio.wordpress.com, will the site be more or less likely to be indexed rather a generic myportfolio.com domain? I've seen mixed opinions where people seem to favor a WP domain for URL output where others say that it's a moot point, and that Google will not favor a WP domain over a dot com domain as long as your meta tags are updated and content is keyword optimized. I tend to disagree and believe a WP domain would more likely be indexed and output more URLs over an individual, laconic domain like myportfolio.com. Am I wrong?
