• What's the difference between UI development and front-end development?

  I'm a front-end developer and really enjoy jQuery and JavaScript. I've built a lot a websites, done some good jQuery work and built a few JavaScript based applications and would really like to get in UI development. Or so I thought. I guessed it would be pretty similar to what I already do except maybe a little more JavaScript heavy but when I looked into it all the job specs said I needed to know about Scrum or Agile development, knowledge of testing frameworks and a good knowledge of JavaScript frameworks and custom events. So, from the specs I get the idea that a UI developer is actually a dedicated JavaScript developer. Is that the case? I understand (with much help from the users on stackoverflow), about JavaScript OO, inheritance, closures, custom events, debugging in Firefox or Aptana etc, and the people I work with seem to think I pretty OK at what I do but clearly my knowledge is not good enough to go for UI jobs. If anyone could tell me a little more about UI development and if there are any good resources for learning about it I would be most grateful as I couldn't find much on the internet.

  Hey Guys I have created one java-swing application. The application runs perfectly runs perfect on my pc. But it doesn't run perfectly on client pc. I had increase my Virtual Memory, earlier on my pc. So my question is.. Is changing memory limit, effect or change application behavior? Is there anything that change the behavior of java application? bcz same application runs perfectly on my pc and same application does not running perfectly on client pc? and there is no problem in code, i have checked three times.

• Does the order of the columns in a SELECT statement make a difference?

  This question was inspired by a previous question posted on SO, "Does the order of the WHERE clause make a differnece?". Would it improve a SELECT statement's performance if the the columns used in the WHERE section are placed at the begining of the SELECT statement? example: SELECT customer.id, transaction.id, transaction.efective_date, transaction.a, [...] FROM customer, transaction WHERE customer.id = transaction.id; I do know that limiting the list of columns to only the needed ones in a SELECT statement improves performance as opposed to using SELECT * because the current list is smaller.

  I was working on a program today and hit this strange bug. I had a UIButton with an action assigned. The action was something like: -(void) someaction:(id) e { if ([e tag]==SOMETAG) { //dostuff } } What confuses me is that when I first wrote it, the if line was if (e.tag==SOMETAG) XCode refused to compile it, saying error: request for member 'tag' in 'e', which is of non-class type 'objc_object*' but I thought the two were equivalent. So under what circumstances are they not the same?

  Hi, I am confused about it. I have read that when a child is created by a parent process, child gets a copy of its parent's address space. What it means here by copy? If i use code below, then it prints same addresses of variable 'a' which is on heap in all cases. i.e in case of child and parent. • From a Java programming perspective, what difference does multicast make to a networking program?

  My manager has asked me to assess what changes would be required to add multicast support to a socket-based TCP/IP networking program that is part of a trading system. As far as I can tell, from the perspective of a Java program, it doesn't seem to matter too much whether the program is unicast or multicast. Doesn't the Java networking API make all of this transparent? By this I mean, wouldn't the change be a simple one of simply adding additional destinations for the outgoing connections?

I can also see that printf() allows you to embed variables inside and do some stuff like formatting. Is puts() merely a primitive version of printf().   All I want to do is differentiate between the program being run by the command line or by clicking the test.vbs file in a window. If you run the script by typing C:\testFolder\test.vbs in a command prompt, then I want the program to run differently than if you double clicked test.vbs in the testFolder. Is there some system variable that I can use to differentiate between the two scenarios? I first attempted to use WScript.Fullname to determine if the pathname ended in cscript or wscript. But that didn't work so well. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
