• How to "flick" a UIImageView?

- by Meltemi
I've got some UIViews that I'd like the user to be able to "flick" across the screen. They're not scroll views. They simply contain a raster image (png). Can anyone point me to some sample code, etc to help get me started? Something a little more heavyweight than "MoveMe" out there that helps detect a "flick" (vs a "nudge" or a drag and drop) and then carries the view off in the direction of the "flick"? OpenGL probably overkill. If possible I'd like to stay w/in the realm of Core Graphics/Animation.

• Handling RSS Tags with NSXMLParser for iPhone

- by MartinW
I've found the following code for parsing through RSS but it does not seem to allow for nested elements: - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didEndElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qName{ NSLog(@"ended element: %@", elementName); if ([elementName isEqualToString:@"item"]) { // save values to an item, then store that item into the array... [item setObject:currentTitle forKey:@"title"]; [item setObject:currentLink forKey:@"link"]; [item setObject:currentSummary forKey:@"summary"]; [item setObject:currentDate forKey:@"date"]; [item setObject:currentImage forKey:@"media:thumbnail"]; The RSS to used is:

Knife robberies and burglaries up

The number of robberies carried out at knife-point has increased sharply and burglaries are also up, latest crime figures indicate

I need to extract the "url" element from the "media" tag. Thanks Martin

• Performance issue finding weekdays over a given period

- by Oysio
I have some methods that return the number of weekdays between two given dates. Since calling these methods become very expensive to call when the two dates lie years apart, I'm wondering how these methods could be refactored in a more efficient way. The returned result is correct but I feel that the iphone processor is struggling to keep up and consequently freezes up the application when I would call these methods over a period of say 10years. Any suggestions ? //daysList contains all weekdays that need to be found between the two dates -(NSInteger) numberOfWeekdaysFromDaysList:(NSMutableArray*) daysList startingFromDate:(NSDate*)startDate toDate:(NSDate*)endDate { NSInteger retNumdays = 0; for (Day *dayObject in [daysList objectEnumerator]) { if ([dayObject isChecked]) { retNumdays += [self numberOfWeekday:[dayObject weekdayNr] startingFromDate:startDate toDate:endDate]; } } return retNumdays; } -(NSInteger) numberOfWeekday:(NSInteger)day startingFromDate:(NSDate*)startDate toDate:(NSDate*)endDate { NSInteger numWeekdays = 0; NSDate *nextDate = startDate; NSComparisonResult result = [endDate compare:nextDate]; //Do while nextDate is in the past while (result == NSOrderedDescending || result == NSOrderedSame) { if ([NSDate weekdayFromDate:nextDate] == day) { numWeekdays++; } nextDate = [nextDate dateByAddingDays:1]; result = [endDate compare:nextDate]; } return numWeekdays; }

• Autorelease vs. Release

- by Sheehan Alam
Given the two scenarios, which code is best practice and why? Autorelease loginButton = [[[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"Login" style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(loginButtonClicked:)] autorelease]; self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = loginButton; or Release loginButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"Login" style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(loginButtonClicked:)]; self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = loginButton; [loginButton release];

• How to check if a BOOL is null?

- by Sheehan Alam
Is there a way I can check to see if a value is NULL/Nil before assigning it to a BOOL? For example, I have a value in a NSDictionary that can be either TRUE/FALSE/NULL mySTUser.current_user_following = [[results objectForKey:@"current_user_following"]boolValue]; When the value is NULL I get the following error *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSNull boolValue]: unrecognized selector sent to instance I would like to be able to handle the NULL case.

• Disable link in UIWebView in appearance and function

- by Peter
Hello, I wish to disable the href links on a UIWebView. First, I want the look of the link to change so the user doesn't think it is clickable. Second, I want the actual link to not be able to be tapped. I do not want to try webView:shouldStartLoadWithRequest:navigationType: since that not change the appearance of my links. I found this answer: Disabling visible links in UIWebView But the above hasn't worked for me. This is my code: NSString* s=[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"for (a in document.getElementsByTagName(\"a\")) {a.href = \"\";}"]; [myWebView stringByEvaluatingJavaScriptFromString:s]; I've been working on this for hours, any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

• UILabel with custom font displays *wrong* custom font

- by winsmith
I'm using this method to embed custom fonts in my iPhone app. The embedding works: When I run the following code, the fonts are listed. (Currently, I'm embedding all family members of Myriad Pro in OTF format) for( NSString *familyName in [UIFont familyNames] ){ for( NSString *fntName in [UIFont fontNamesForFamilyName:familyName] ){ NSLog(@"%@", fntName); }} When I try to set the font of a label to MyriadPro or MyriadPro-Bold, this works just as expected. However, when I set the font to MyriadPro-BoldCond, the label is still set in MyriadPro-Bold instead of the condensed version. (The font names are correct, I checked.) My Code: [recommendationLabel setFont:[UIFont fontWithName:@"MyriadPro-BoldCond" size:140]]; recommendationLabel.adjustsFontSizeToFitWidth = YES; What's the deal?

• Value from UISlider method?

- by fuzzygoat
Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding sliders, the version below was my first attempt (the range is 0.0 - 100.0) The results I get are not right. // Version 1.0 -(IBAction)sliderMoved:(id)sender { NSLog(@"SliderValue ... %d",(int)[sender value]); } // OUTPUT: // [1845:207] SliderMoved ... -1.991753 // [1845:207] SliderMoved ... 0.000000 // [1845:207] SliderMoved ... 0.000000 // [1845:207] SliderMoved ... 32768.000435 With the version below I get the values I expect, what am I missing in version_001? // Version 2.0 -(IBAction)sliderMoved:(UISlider *)sender { NSLog(@"SliderValue ... %d",(int)[sender value]); } // OUTPUT: // [1914:207] SliderMoved ... 1 // [1914:207] SliderMoved ... 2 // [1914:207] SliderMoved ... 3 // [1914:207] SliderMoved ... 4 cheers Gary

• Core data fetch only returns unique managed objects

- by JK
I execute a core data fetch which specifies a predicate as follows: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"identifier IN %@", favoritesIDs]; When there are duplicate items in the favoriteIDs array, the fetch request only returns 1 managed object. How can I ensure that more than one instance is fetched? Thank you.

• unclear use of @property in window app using core data

- by Matt
Looking through a Window based application ive used to experiment with as a way of getting my head around core data, ive noticed that the appdelegate has the following code myAppDelegate.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import <CoreData/CoreData.h> @interface iCaptureFreeAppDelegate : NSObject <UIApplicationDelegate> { NSManagedObjectModel *managedObjectModel; NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext; NSPersistentStoreCoordinator *persistentStoreCoordinator; UIWindow *window; UITabBarController *tabBarController; } myAppDelegate.m #import "myAppDelegate.h" @interface iCaptureFreeAppDelegate (PrivateCoreDataStack) @property (nonatomic, retain, readonly) NSManagedObjectModel *managedObjectModel; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext; @property (nonatomic, retain, readonly) NSPersistentStoreCoordinator *persistentStoreCoordinator; @end @implementation iCaptureFreeAppDelegate @synthesize window, tabBarController; // code .... // - (NSManagedObjectContext *) managedObjectContext { } - (NSManagedObjectModel *)managedObjectModel { } - (NSPersistentStoreCoordinator *)persistentStoreCoordinator { } // etc..... i want to understand a few things about what this project is doing why the properties in the category declaration? (if i delete the privateCoreDataStack category everything still works...) why the properties appear to be linked with the methods in the implementation ... managedObjectContext {} etc why the members in the .h file have the same name as the properties and the methods why code completion lets me use dot '.' to access the members but then fails on compilation say it cant find a getter thanks !

• iPhone: no way to draw on screen outside drawRect?

- by Seva Alekseyev
Is there a way to draw on the iPhone screen (on a UIView in a UIWindow) outside of that view's drawRect() method? If so, how do I obtain the graphics context? The graphics guide mentions class NSGraphicsContext, but the relevant chapter seems like a blind copy/paste from Mac OS X docs, and there's no such class in iPhone SDK.

• Defined outlets, connected them, they all returns (null)

- by Tom
Hi! I'm trying to play with a WebView. I made an outlet: IBOutlet UIWebView *browser; Defined it as a property: @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIWebView *browser; Synthethized it: @synthesize browser; Finally, I connected it in Interface Builder, really it is. Then I try to do something with it i.e.: [browser loadRequest:[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://apple.com"]]]; Or also: Etape *etape = [[Etape alloc] init]; NSString *html = [etape generateHTMLforEtape:[current_etape objectAtIndex:0]]; [browser loadHTMLString:html baseURL:nil]; [etape release]; I get no errors, I tried to Build & Analyse, no notices or warnings or errors.. I've been searching for one whole day, please help me :/ Thanks a lot! EDIT: Here's screenshots of my connections for my WebView: EDIT: That is how I call the view: DetailViewController *dvController = [[DetailViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"DetailViewController" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; dvController.workflow_id = parent_id; Etape *etape = [[Etape alloc] init]; dvController.etapes = [etape getEtapes:parent_id]; [etape release]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:dvController animated:YES]; [dvController release];

• UIViewController takes up entire screen in Interface Builder

- by Sheehan Alam
I have a NIB with a UIView that contains some UILabels, UIButtons etc. and a UIViewController that is loading a detached NIB. I want the UIViewController to be positioned below my UIView, but whenever I add it in Interface Builder it takes up the whole screen, and my UIView becomes part of the UIViewController. How can I make sure UIViewController appears below the UIView?

• How to invert arrow image placed before the first cell when tableview cells are swiped beyond first

- by neha
Hi all, In my application, I need to add this functionality that there should be an arrow image upside down placed before first cell and some text like "Pull down to refresh" and when user pulls the table beyond this then this arrow gets inverted and text changes to "Release to refresh" and when the user releases his finger, the data is refreshed and rows get added to that point So now this initial arrow and text moves upwards before the first cell again. Can anybody tell me wheather there's any event that does this? Or else which event I need to capture in order to add this functionality? Thanks in advance.

• should variable be released or not? iphone-sdk

- by psebos
Hi, I have the following piece of code from a book. There is this function loadPrefs where the NSString *userTimeZone is being released before the end of the function. Why? The string was not created with alloc and I assume that the stringForKey function returns an autoreleased NSString. Is this an error or am I missing something? Is it an error in the book? (I new into objective-C) In the documentation for stringForKey the only thing it mentions is: Special Considerations The returned string is immutable, even if the value you originally set was a mutable string. The code: - (void) loadPrefs { timeZoneName = DefaultTimeZonePref; NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSString *userTimeZone = [defaults stringForKey: TimeZonePrefKey]; if (userTimeZone != NULL) timeZoneName = userTimeZone; [userTimeZone release]; show24Hour = [defaults boolForKey:TwentyFourHourPrefKey]; } Thanks!!!!

• Dynamic Button Layout without hard coding positions

- by mmc
I would like to implement a view (it will actually be going into the footer of a UITableView) that implements 1-3 buttons. I would like the layout of these buttons (and the size of the buttons themselves) to change depending on which ones are showing. An example of almost the exact behavior I would want is at the bottom of the Info screen in the Contacts application when you are looking at a specific contact ("Add to Favorites" disappears when it is clicked, and the other buttons expand to take up the available space in a nice animation). As I'm running through the different layout scenarios, I'm hard coding all these values and I just think... "this is NOT the way I'm supposed to be doing this." It even APPEARS that Interface Builder has some features that may do this for me in the ruler tab, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how they work (if they work) on the phone. Does anyone have any suggestions, or a tutorial online that I could look at to point me in the right direction? Thanks much.

• How do I reset the state of a view inside a tabbar?

- by ABeanSits
Hello CocoaTouch-Experts! This is a fairly straightforward question though my Googling session gave me nothing. How do I reset the state of a view hierarchy located in a tabbar programmatically? The behavior I want to replicate is when the user tapps on a tab twice. This causes the view located under that tab to return to it's initial state. The tab is "owned" by a UINavigationController and when the user reaches a certain point in the view hierarchy there is a button which I want to connect this behavior to. All my attempts have failed except calling on a method in AppDelegate which kills the view and adds it back to the UITabBarController again. But this does not feel like the right way to go. Thanks in advance. Best regards //Abeansits
