  • How do I safely use a virus infected USB drive in Ubuntu?

    I have an USB drive which I know is virus infected (an anti-virus on my friend's machine detected it). Unfortunately neither of us know the virus name and I don't want to take the risk of plugging it to my Windows box again. Of course, in all probability the virus affects only Windows. (But I'm not sure) I want to know if I can safely plug the USB into my Ubuntu Lucid laptop and copy the stuff I need from the drive. If there are some precautions I need to follow what would they be?

  • How do I get one monitor on top of the other in Ubuntu 10.10?

    I'm using a laptop and a monitor (wall mounted) over my laptop. I would like to reflect this physical hardware setup in my software screen setup. So that I can move my mouse upward, out of my laptop screen and use the monitor on the wall. I have been searching for a solution for a while, and I hope somone can help me out. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 "out of the box". Side by side screen setups works just fine, over/under is doesn't work.

  • trying to install ubuntu touch to nexus 4 - can't connect device (14.04 in virtual box on mac)

    I'm trying to install Ubuntu touch to a nexus 4. I've followed all the steps so far, downloaded the packages and gotten the phone ready, but now I got to the step of connecting it to the computer [under 'Enable USB Debugging'], but it's not listed when I try $ adb devices (I tried the 'adb kill-server' command first too, but nothing is listed). I'm sure it's something simple I'm forgetting, but can anyone help please? I have debugging enabled. Running Trusty in VirtualBox on MacBook. Thanks!

    I've followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install, first doing the steps that lead to phablet-flash -b and then the manual ones. In both cases, I get stuck at the Google boot screen. It does not boot into Touch. No errors during manual install, and adb devices shows the device, but I get the following with phablet-flash or phablet-flash -b (second and subsequent times, not the first time): Device detected as /system/bin/sh: getprop: not found Unsupported device, autodetect fails device When working on flipped images, detection does not work and would require -d Not clear what that all means. The Nexus 4 had the initial Touch dev preview on it, FYI. I saw no separate instructions for upgrading from that.

    I recently purchased a nice asus 1000HE, and installed Ubuntu NBR. However, I'm pretty disappointed with how sluggish it feels. I'm wondering if I maybe need to install a closed-source graphics driver - it feels similar to how my work laptop performed before I installed the restricted nvidia driver on that machine.     I have Ubuntu 10.04 guest on Windows XP host. I need to use a specific VPN software that works only on Windows. How should I configure virtualbox/guest so that the VPN connection would be visible on guest? I already tried NAT and bridged network settings. With both of these options I get only normal internet connection to work, but sites requiring VPN don't work on guest, only on host.

  • Ubuntu 9.1 - Audio coming from both speakers and headphones

    I have an HP Compaq nc8230 that has an annoying little problem with it's audio devices in Ubuntu 9.1. When I have the headphones plugged in, the audio continues to play simultaneously through the speakers no matter what. I'm not sure what kind of sound card this computer has, but in WIndows XP, Vista, 7 and OSx86 I didn't have this problem. I've tried using 3 different headphones and it didn't change anything. Please help.

The documentation I've been thus far say to do the following: sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup But I don't see the xorg.conf file anywhere... Am I missing something?   • New install indicator while install updating on Ubuntu

    In the update manager of ubuntu I see several libraries marked with New Install. I don't know what is the benefit I can get from that New Install? What if I just want a normal upgrade, not a New Install? (I have 3 Linux Kernel versions right now (that I can see and select from Grub menu), and I think I don't need all of them since I always use the latest Kernel).
