  • ASP.NET MVC & Web Services

    - by ANaimi
Hello, Does adding a Web Service to my ASP.NET MVC project break the whole concept of MVC? That Web Service (WCF) depends on the Model layer from my MVC project to communicate with the back-end (so it looks to me like it needs to be part of the MVC solution). Should I add this to the Controller or Model layer?

  • Web History: Early examples of collapsing and expanding content in an essay

    - by jes5199
I vaguely remember that in the early days of the browser, one notion of what hypertext could be used for was a "zoom in" detail for academic essays: if you wanted a brief overview, you'd take the outermost level, and if you wanted to delve, you would click something and more sentences would appear. I know this sounds trivial and now, but in the mid-1990s it was thought-provoking. Has anyone seen any web fossils like this lying around, ideally still live on the web somewhere?

  • Storring data in web.config(custom section/appSettings element) vs storing it in a class

    - by rubysons
Hi. Why is it better to store data inside an appSettings element (or inside a custom section) of a web.config file than to store it in a class? One argument would be that by using custom sections we don’t have to recompile code when we change data, but that’s a weak argument, especially if we’re using Web Sites, which get recompiled automatically whenever code changes! Thank you

  • Java Web Application on Tomcat - Displaying a File Uploaded by User

    - by walnutmon
I need to display uploaded files on a web application, the flow is as follows User uploads file through web UI Validation on image Makes call to imageRepository.store( uploadedImage, user.getSite() ) The user wants the image displayed which adds <img src="${anUploadedImage.getUrl()}"/> but that is where I'm stuck, what can getUrl() do? The simple solution is to put it someplace and let Apache serve the file, but then I can't use the application to ensure that one user isn't modifying the URL to view other users files, which in this case is important

  • Using web.config directory security and extensionless urls

    - by Matt Brailsford
Hi Guys, I'd like to use the built in directory security features built into the web.config to restrict access to child pages of a parent page. My structure is as follows: Members Members/News Members/Press Members/Movies Users should be able to have access to the members parent page, but not child pages. My problem is, because I am using extensionless URLs, the web.config thinks this is a directory and so access is blocked. Is there a way to say only restrict access for sub pages?

  • Getting RAW Soap Data from a Web Reference Client running in ASP.net

    - by Harry
I'm trying to trouble shoot a web service client in my current project. I'm not sure of the platform of the Service Server (Most likely LAMP). I believe there is a fault on their side of the fence as i have eliminated the potential issues with my client. The client is a standard ASMX type web reference proxy auto generated from the service WSDL. What I need to get to is the RAW SOAP Messages (Request and Responses) What is the best way to go about this?

  • Is web.config more secure than a class?

    - by o-logn
I was reading a tutorial on ASP.NET and third party API's and it mentioned that the API KEY and SECRET KEY should be stored in the web.config file, for security on production servers, instead of in the classes that use them. However, I'm not quite sure what's more secure about a web.config file than a class? I understand the convenience of storing it in a config file, but I don't see the security benefit?

    - by luiscarlosch
This post http://www.theserverside.net/tt/articles/showarticle.tss?id=Top5WSMistakes encourages me to create the web service for business logic layer but many people use it in the data access layer. I want to create a project where i want to access the same data repository from a desktop application, website and a cell phone. What would you recommend me? Is there any case it may be a good idea implement web services to both layers? thanks.

  • web applications tend to have a admin panel?

    - by ajsie
i wonder if large web applications like twitter and facebook have admin panels to handle CRUD for users, posts, images, themes and so on just like in CMS like drupal? so programmers have to code the front for the regular users AND back for the administrators? if i develop an web application is it recommended that i also code the admin part? or is it unnecessary since i can handle all directly in mysql and by editing php scripts directly? share your thoughts! thanks
