• What advantage does a 2400x600 dpi printer have over a 1200x1200 dpi printer?

  I've seen laser printers with a resolutions of 1200x1200 dpi and, strangely, 2400x600 dpi. As the measure is dots per inch, not Kdots on a page or something (where a higher vertical resolution might make sense because paper is rectangular, not square), I'm wondering what the uneven resolution is good for. Why print one square inch with 2400 dots vertically but only 600 horizontally? Does this look more detailed than 1200 by 1200 dots? Or is it better for textile printing or some other special case?

• How do I quickly switch to/from the front panel speakers in Ubuntu?

  I have speakers attached to my front panel sound output that I switch to frequently. Currently the process is to open Terminal, type "alsamixer", scroll over to "Front Panel", and press "M" to activate it. Although this doesn't seem like much, it's a hassle when switching between outputs frequently. Are there any faster alternatives, such as a button that can be placed on the GNOME panel or a shortcut key that can be used?

• Windows 7 Windows Explorer jumpy tree view

  Is there any way to get Windows Explorer tree view in Windows 7 to stop jumping? I think they really messed up this design. Click a node to expand a deeper level and it instantly scrolls the tree vertically to a new location. This is not a good feature since my eye completely loses the node it was focused on and I have to hunt for where I was. I want the tree view to remain fixed where it is unless I scroll it myself.

• My firefox scrolling is jerky and very slow - how can I fix this?

  I have already turned 'smooth scrolling' on and have downloaded a plugin called 'smooth scrolling'. Whenever I scroll down, the browser movement is very jerky and slow. It is pretty much unusable. However, scrolling in a div with overflow: auto (like the related questions div above the question input textarea) scrolls fine. I am using Windows XP freshly installed with Firefox 3.5.1 Anyone have any solutions?

  Took me a bit to realize that since upgrading to 8.1 my touchpad smart gestures (two finger scroll, top down swipe, left in swipe, ect) don't work. I have read up a little online but can't seem to find an answer or fix that 1) sounds trustworthy and 2) is put into language and steps that I understand.   I'm on a laptop without a mouse. This means I don't have the middle mouse button/wheel. I tried to use ahk to make my numpad act like a mouse wheel with the middle mouse button. Numpad8::WheelUp Numpad2::WheelDown Numpad5::MButton The problem is that it scrolls up/down 2 times (when I click and release the button). How do I make the wheel scroll only once when I hit the button and not again after releasing it?

  Is it possible to set Microsoft Word to display some text left-aligned and other text right-aligned on a single line? Here's an example of what I mean: | Chickens, turkey and duck 30 | | Cows 240 | | Pigs and boar 83 | | Sheep Not applicable | where the vertical lines denote the sides of the page. The full justify option won't work because I don't want anything in the middle of the lines. The table of contents option has the formatting I want, but only supports page numbers, which does me no good.

  When I open a document using vi or vim, I am unable to navigate the page using Page Up and Page Down keys. On pressing these keys, vim seems to behave in abnormal maaner, and changes the case of character beneath the cursor. It then takes few seconds to come back again in insert mode. • Printing data in Excel ver 14.0 in a maxed cell

  I have set the cell to the maximum size (column width of 255 and row height of 409.5). In order to view all of the data in the cell, I have to use up/down arrows. I don't need to necessarily view all of the data in the cell at one time, however I do need it to print, and it's only printing what's viewable (not what you can scroll through).....any suggestions on how to get the entire cell to print? The various approaches suggested on the Emacs wiki seem to work only in Linux. I'm using EmacsW32 for what it matters, but I tested with the standard Emacs distribution as well, with no results. As a long time Vim user, I'm fairly surprised that Emacs cannot scroll smoothly by itself.
