  I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• Where can I ask web design questions of a more amateur nature?

  I don't want to bother pro web designers with simple questions as I see most of the questions here are quite technical. An example would be, 'I have a template I've downloaded. The folder contains a css folder and PHP files. How would I bring this into Dreamweaver?' E.g. short and easy to understand code for a beginner and a framework with support for modern features. Disregard my current knowledge, I'm more interested in the capacity of web programming languages and frameworks. • Should I provide fallbacks for HTML5/CSS3 elements in a web page at this point?

  I'm wondering if I should bother providing a fallback for HTML5 tags and attributes and CSS3 styling at this point in time. I know that there's probably still a lot of people out there who use older versions of browsers and HTML5/CSS3 are still fairly new. I read this article: Should I use non-standard tags in a HTML page for highlighting words? and one answer mentioned that people kind of "cheat" with older browsers by using the new tags and attributes, but styling them in CSS to ensure they show up right. This question: Relevance of HTML5: Is now the time? was asked about two years ago and I don't know how relevant it is anymore. For example, I want to use the placeholder and required attributes in a web form I'm building and it has no labels to show what each <input> is. How do I handle this, or do I bother?

  I'm new to Stripes. I worked on MVC frameworks like Struts 1.x and 2.x. When I started learning, its features are awesome and very lightweight; it has in-depth validations and offers easy integration with other frameworks too. There are no configurations and everything is simplified with annotations. I don't understand why Stripes is not popular compared with other Java web frameworks like Struts or JSF? I didn't find any drawbacks in Stripes. Any ideas why?

  I am working on a brand new SaaS web application and need to estimate the initial bandwidth usage. Since the site doesn't exist yet, and since this is my first endeavor of this sort, I'm not really sure how much bandwidth to estimate to begin with. We will be using Linux, Apache, PHP and Mysql. The content will be generated dynamically. There will be images as part of the site design but user's will also upload images that will be displayed and documents that will be stored for download at later times. We'd like to be able to support 500,000 page loads per month with estimated image loads being about two to three times that.

  I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). • How to I prevent decimal truncation in Word 2003 when a document is auto populated via a Web Service

  I have a document template which is being auto populated via an external web service. The incoming data exists as a currency (e.g. 3.10) but when it is passed into the Word Document template the variable is truncated to remove any trailing 0's. I need the number to always appear with 2 decimals, even if they are both 0's. This is with the 2003 version of Word, I have not tested with other versions since all of our document templates need to be generated using that version of Word. I feel like this can be done with a Macro or a VB script but I have a very small amount of time & no experience with these tools - Any help is greatly appreciated!

  I've recently been put on heavy JavaScript projects and have become fond of the front-end world in comparison to the back-end. I have always been good at proper markup and CSS, and coupled with AJAX, pretty animations, and dynamically generated content, it's become a much more interesting and flashy world for me. I would like to be able to continue to hone my craft in the same way that I was able to become proficient at back-end development with PHP: getting paid to do it. How would I market myself as a front-end web developer with a strong interest in dynamic JavaScript-driven websites? Due to my strong background in back-end development, how would I find the companies that wouldn't waste my front-end skill set on simple HTML/CSS development? And as a bonus, how would I apply this to being a contractor/freelance developer rather than a salaried employee?
