chat application: pubsubhub vs xmpp

I'm unsure on the best stack to build a chat application. Currently I'm thinking of two main options: facebook tornado cons: does not use the main chat protocol xmpp but pubsubhubbub pros: i really like its simplicity for development (webserver + webframework); pubsubhubbub also seems simpler as a protocol than xmpp; and i know python xmpp + bosch, punjab, ejabberd cons: don't know erlang; overall seems a bit harder to develop pros: uses xmpp protocol The chat app will need to have the following: Private messages Public rooms Private rooms Chat history for rooms (not forever, just the last n messages) html embedding url to chat room Both options seem scalable so that's not really my worry (we're thinking of running the app in amazon's ec2 as well). I know there's a project that builds a xmpp server using tornado but it's not ready for production use and our deadline isn't that big. Basically my main worry is ease of development vs somehow regretting later using pubsubhubbub to develop a chat app but I read somewhere that PubSubHubbub might eventually replace XMPP as REST replaced SOAP - so what do you think?

Hotmail rejecting php's email's

My website sends activation mails to new members using the php mail() function. I manage my email accounts using the google mail service (aspmx.googlemail.com). But unfortunately, Hotmail users receive the activation email in their unwanted folder. I did some research and found out about SPF records (I can not use keys since I have limited control over my webserver). So how do I configure my SPF record? I now have: v=spf1 a mx a:mywebsite.net include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all Would this be what I need?

Receiving "Path 'OPTIONS' is forbidden." Exception in ASP.NET website

I am getting the error "Path 'OPTIONS' is forbidden." since we moved our website over to a new server setup. I am unable to recreate the error but I am receiving emails for this exception at least a few times a day. Any ideas what could be causing this and how I can fix it? EDIT: Stack Trace: at System.Web.HttpMethodNotAllowedHandler.ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) at System.Web.HttpApplication.CallHandlerExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() at System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) There are no directories or files named OPTIONS and I believe all permissions are correct. I am finding some information about a possible link to EXCEL getting data from the webserver, but nothing that full explains how or what is happening yet. EDIT AGAIN: Seems this has to do with Excel files opening in Internet Explorer..

Intercept page request behind firewall return altered content with php and apache

I'm providing free wifi service and need an ad to be added to all page requests. Currently I have a router forwarding all http requests to an apache server, which redirects all requests to an index.php page. The index.php page reads the request, fetches the content from the appropriate site, and edits the content to include the ad. The problem is that all images and css files etc. cannot be accessed, because when the browser tries to get the image <img src="site.com/image.jpg"> it's just redirected back to the index.php. I can change settings for the router (running dd-wrt) and the webserver (apache2 and php 5.2). Is there a solution that allows content to be edited before returning to the client, and allows css and images to be accessed?

Silverlight File download from client

I have a Silverlight application that implements some basic CRUD operations on a fairly flat data set. The application loads all the data onto the client to allow for quick editing (this is a fairly small data set no more that a couple K). I would like to allow them to download the file as a CSV so they can edit the data locally. I know i can set up a HyperLink button to a URL on my webserver and then server the data dynamically using a custom server handler. But this seems kind of roundabout to me because the all the data is already all on the Client's machine (because the Silverlight application loaded it). So i was wondering if there was a way to prompt the user for a file download and then dynamically generate the file download stream from Silverlight?

"port forwarding": redirect calls to webservice at port 8081 to port 80

Hi, a colleague of mine wrote a webservice that runs on port 8081 of our Windows 2008 Server. He uses the class ServiceHost, afaik this means its a standalone host (no IIS or ASP involvement). Note: I'm new into WCF ;) Now there are some issues with clients behind a firewall blocking the requests to remote port 8081 of our server (where the webservice runs). The easiest solution would be: run the webservice host at port 80 ... But: there is also a Apache 2.2 webserver running on the Windows Server, hosting some websites. By default it runs on port 80. My solution after some researching: use a virtual host to route requests to a virtual host (lets say http://webservice.[hostname]:80) to the webservice host (http://[hostname]:8081). Is this a good idea? Can Apache handle forwards to standalone webservice hosts? It would be nice if someone could lead me on to the right track :) Best regards, Niels

Getting Rails Application Running Under IronRuby Rack

Anyone else playing with ironruby? I have successfully got the IronRuby.Rails.Example project running on my local machine under IIS 5.1. I am now attempting to get my own demo rails site running in the same way. My web.config is slightly different from the example project. I am attempting to only use what was distributed with IronRuby 1.0 and what I have installed using gems. I am getting the following error which doesn't give me a lot to go on: D:/demo/config/boot.rb:66:in `exit': exit (SystemExit) After trying many different things, I think it is having a problem finding gems. http post with ant for file uploading

As part of my Ant build process, I'd like to upload files to a webserver via HTTP Post. Ant only comes with an HTTP Get task. However, Ant Contrib seems to have an HTTP Post task. The problem is that it doesn't have any authentication (like get does) or any way to specify a file upload (despite what the docs say, "rawFile" is not part of the distro). My question is: does Ant Contrib's Post task actually support what I want, but in a non-obvious way (perhaps I have to do it by hand)? Or is there some other way to do this?

Erb with Sinatra in ruby

So I have a webserver I've built using sinatra, the meat of which goes like this: set :variable,"value" get '/' do erb :index end And, of course, the template in views/index.erb which looks something like this: <html>  <ul> <% my_array.each do |thing| %> <%="Something: #{thing}, variable from sinatra: #{settings.variable}"%> <% end %> </ul> </html> If you try running code like this you'll notice that you can't access sinatra's settings variable from inside erb templates. Any ideas how I can achieve this while keeping its simplicity? Thanks in advance!

actionscript swf: why the swf is cached in one web server

Hi, I have one swf and a program to load this swf. The swf is put in a server. I encounter a weird problem that if I put this swf in serverA, each time my program will issue a http request to that webserver(with 304 response). But when I move the swf from serverA to serverB, some weird things happen, the progrom will only issue the first time http request, and after that, it didn't send any http request, it looks like it uses the cache in the disk. I wonder is how can I configure serverA make the behavior the same as serverB, as I guess the problem may exists in the http response that make the program not retrieving the swf from serverB any more. Shopping Portal based on XML Data - XSLT or PHP?

For my bachelor thesis I want to implement a shopping (price comparison) portal prototype based on XML Data. The main requirement is to get a very clear and customizable HTML template, which should be hosted by the customer on his own webserver. I'm not very sure if XSLT meets this requirements, as it generates a lot of xsl-related code. It is not easy to understand for people with little HTML skills. I have some experience with the PHP templating engine Smarty. The syntax is much better, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to parse the XML data with PHP, as it is very complex. Which language should I choose for a web application with high complexity? XSLT or PHP?

Codeigniter 404 can't find index.php (only on real server, not on virtual server)

Hey, I got a working webpage with CodeIgniter. I did now just upload it to my webserver and it gives me a 404 error. How do I change apache2 DocumentRoot (default snow leopard install) and not get "You don't have perm

I'm trying to point DocumentRoot at a directory in my user folder. While I can happily point DocumentRoot at /Library/WebServer/Documents and ~/Sites I keep getting "You don't have permission to access / on this server." when I point it anywhere else. OK, I just found a solution mid-question (stack overflow is just that good) by changing the user/group apache runs under to myuser/admin. I'm sure there must be a better way though. Surely some kind of permissions magic on the directory I'm pointing at?

Java: Read POST data from a socket on an HTTP server

I have a website (python/django) that needs to use a load of Java resources that may or may not be on the same server. Therefore I am writing a mini webserver in Java that will receive a request and then when processing is finished, POST some data back to a url on the site. I have got the java code receiving connections on sockets and responding with some simple HTML. My problem is that I will POST data to the Java server and that code needs to act on the data. How do I go about reading the data that is posted in the HTML request, if it is even possible. If not, is there any other way you would do this. If you think I am going about this in completely the wrong way then please tell me and I will consider another method, but after conversing with some Java developers, this seemed like the best way for what I was doing. Cannot login with PhpMyAdmin on Mac os x 10.6. Does anyone know a fix to this error message?

Hi, I just reinstalled Mac Os X 10.6.2 and had to reinstall/update my MySQL server. I run phpMyAdmin inside my localhost and I used to be able to login without a hitch. Since the updated (latest version MySQL 5.1.45 & PMA 3.3.1) versions I only get the following error when trying to login with phpMyAdmin: phpMyAdmin - Error Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly. The only thing I noticed is that mcrypt cannot be loaded (this has always been the case, no idea what to do to install this..) but this has never been a problem before. If anyone know what to do here that would be really appreciated. Hi, We have an application running on a loadbalanced environment, let say webserver A and B. The loadbalancing is on the HTTP level, so the loadbalancer directs each user request to one of both webservers. The scope of the repositories in the application is managed by the spring.net container, and the application relies on data that can be cached by the repository (performance reasons). In this case we can never be sure that the cached data in the repositories on both webservers is the same. Is there mechanism in spring.net that can manage this kind problem? Or is there another common approach for this kind of thing? Any ideas? Thx, Bert

However, deploying the web app to my service provider causes this error: [ArgumentException: Unable to find the requested .Net Framework Data Provider. It may not be installed.] System.Data.Common.DbProviderFactories.GetFactory(String providerInvariantName) +1308959 System.Data.EntityClient.EntityConnection.GetFactory(String providerString) +35 Service provider has commented that they do not support SQLite. Prevent direct access to a PHP page.

How do I prevent my users from accessing directly pages meant for ajax calls only? Passing a key during ajax call seems like a solution, whereas access without the key will not be processed. But it is also easy to fabricate the key, no? Curse of View Source... p/s: Using Apache as webserver. EDIT: To answer why, I have jQuery ui-tabs in my index.php, and inside those tabs are forms with scripts, which won't work if they're accessed directly. Why a user would want to do that, I don't know, I just figure I'd be more user friendly by preventing direct access to forms without validation scripts.

php Access violation

I am trying to install Php on Vista (IIS 7). The installation and configuration seems to be fine. Pretty much followed everything mentioned in http://blogs.iis.net/bills/archive/2006/09/19/How-to-install-PHP-on-IIS7-_2800_RC1_2900_.aspx I can even bring up a test.php which is basically and can also connect to mysql db through code. But when I try to bring up some other php page like drupal's index page or phpmyadmin index page, it brings up a Php access violation message. Any clue whats happening? Also is there some tracing/diagnositic tool for php to trace whats happenign on the webserver.

MSXML2.XMLHTTP Request to validate entered URL in ASP Classic

Hi guys. Thanks in advance for any help received. I want to allow our client to enter a URL into a text field which then checks whether the URL exists and works. There are 3 possible outcomes I want to check for: A status of 200 - OK, A status of 500 - Server Error, Or a status of 404 - page not found. When executing the following code in ASP classic I get a status code of 12007 when I should be getting 404. Is this because it can't find a webserver to return a code of 404? additional security measures besides a login with user-password - what can you think of?

I'm wondering which additional security measures one could take besides a traditional login with user and password. What do you think of this one: _manually adding a cookie to each client which includes a secret key _this cookie is not served by the webserver, it is actually copied "by hand" to each client computer _if a client connects to the web-app the server graps that cookie and if the containing secret key is ok, the traditional login box is presented where the user has to enter the user-password combination _communication between client and server is encrypted with https Thus a potential intruder would first need to get the cookie from the clients computer, which is only possible with having access to the clients computer. This would work only for a very small user-base and an admin willing to do this manual work.
