• Is there an alternative to k3dsurf in 12.10?

  I've just upgraded to Quantal Quetzal on my home computer and discovered that the program K3dSurf has been removed from the repositories. (Presumably since it doesn't seem to be in active development and still depends on qt3 libraries.) Does anyone know of a similar program (user-friendly and versatile) for drawing 3D surfaces? This has been a mission-critical program for me when teaching multivariable calculus, so I won't be able to upgrade at work unless I can find a replacement. (Yes, I could install directly from the program's website, but dealing with obsolete libraries sounds like a giant headache.)

• What is (are) the most useful technique/visualization for overall project status?

  For reasons "above my pay grade", we're developing an issue/project tracking system where I work (similar to Trac, FogBugz, etc). The managers want a useful tool to be able to track the overall health of the project (e.g. How much time left, how are we performing vs estimates) and one of the features that has been requested is some type of critical path support and visualization. The logic explained to me is that they want to be sure that at least the most important pieces of the project are currently being worked on. The initial idea was that we would create task-based dependencies. My understanding of project management tells me that this kind of granular approach is unnecessary - having milestones with specific deadlines/dependencies is much more useful. I would like to know what are the most useful techniques and "pretty pictures" you've seen/used for project development. Having objective data would be best, but somewhat subjective data is helpful too.

• RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: Connecting LEDs

  Next, we need some low-level peripherals to connect to the Raspberry Pi GPIO header. So, we'll do what's called a "Fry's Run" in Silicon Valley, which means we go shop at the local Fry's Electronics store for parts. In this case, we'll need some breadboard jumper wires (blue wires in photo), some LEDs, and some resistors (for the RPi GPIO, 150 ohms - 300 ohms would work for the 3.3V output of the GPIO ports). And, if you want to do other projects, you might as well by a breadboard, which is a development board with lots of holes in it. Ask a Fry's clerk for help. Or, better yet, ask the customer standing next to you in the electronics components aisle for help. (Might be faster) So, go to your local hobby electronics store, or go to Fry's if you have one close by, and come back here to the next blog post to see how to hook these parts up. Hinkmond

  Being an IT student, I was recently given some overview about design patterns by one of our teachers. I understood what they are for but some aspects still keep bugging me. Are they really used by the majority of programmers? Speaking of experience, I've had some troubles while programming, things I could not solve for a while, but google and some hours of research solved my problem. If somewhere in the web I find a way to solve my problem, is this a design pattern? Am I using it? And also, do you (programmers) find yourself looking for patterns (where am I supposed to look btw?) when you start the development? If so, this is certainly a habit that I must start to embrace.

  Gestern hat Oracle bekanntgegeben, dass die beiden Produkte Oracle Audit Vault und Oracle Database Firewall zu einem Produkt werden. Der neue Produktname wird "Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall" sein. Software und Dokumentation werden in den nächsten Tagen zum Download verfügbar sein. Das Zusammenlegen macht durchaus Sinn, denn die ursprünglichen Produkte wiesen im Bereich der Protokollierung und des Berichtswesens deutliche Überschneidungen auf. • How are generics implemented?

  This is the question from compiler internals perspective. I am interested in generics, not templates (C++), so I marked the question with C#. Not Java, because AFAIK the generics in both languages differ in implementations. When I look at languages w/o generics it is pretty straightforward, you can validate the class definition, add it to hierarchy and that's it. But what to do with generic class, and more importantly how handle references to it? How to make sure that static fields are singular per instantiations (i.e. each time generic parameters are resolved). Let's say I see a call: var x = new Foo<Bar>(); Do I add new Foo_Bar class to hierarchy?   Possible Duplicate: Is there such a thing as Programmer's block? Has anyone had writers block? Currently, I am trying to get back in to a development role but am struggling to develop any apps. I have a good understanding of VB and OOP. I developed last in the first version of .net studio and also foxpro 9. At the moment I have tried building a customer order app, the form and database have been straight forward but I'm struggling with the nuts and bolts of the application. Should it be a Web or Windows application? Should I use classes/modules? All advice is welcome.

• Create an Asynchronous JAX-WS Web Service and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g

  This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations. This is the approach taken in this article. This posting details how to: Modify a JAX-WS Web Service developed using a "Bottom up " approach to have an asynchronous method and callback. • In centralized version control, is it always good to update often?

  Assuming that: You are in a team developing some software. Your team is using centralized version control in the development process. You are working on a new feature which will surely take several days to complete, and you won't be able to commit before that because it would break the build. Your team members commit something every day that affects some of the files you're working with for your fancy new feature. Since this is centralized version control, you will have to update your local checkout at some point: at least once right before committing the new feature. If you update only once right before your commit, then there might be a lot of conflicts due to the many other changes by your teammates, which could be a world of pain to resolve all at once. Or, you could update often, and even if there are a few conflicts to resolve day by day, it should be easier to do, little by little. Can we say that it is always a good idea to update often?

  I am new to web development and trying to study various types of websites as case study. Right now my focus is on how search engines works for an eCommerce website. I know basic functioning for a search engine, i.e. crawl web pages, index them and the display the results using those indexes. But I got little confuse in case of an eCommerce website. Don't you think that it would be better if a search engine instead of crawling the web pages containing products, it should directly crawl the database and index the products stored in the database? And when a user search for any product, it will simply give us the rows of the table which matches the user query? If this is not the case, can someone please explain how the usual method works on eCommerce website?

  Defect Seeding seems to be one of the few ways a development organization can tell how thorough an independent testing group is. I'm a fan of using metrics to help counter overconfidence biases, and drive discussions around facts. With that said, I haven't seen Seeding Defects used in practice. Are there best practices above and beyond what McConnell explained? Are there public examples where this has been done? In the absence of the above, any thoughts on why it hasn't been done more? • Track url from Amazon S3 using Google Analytics

  I couldn't find any decent pay per view video solutions for low budget clients. So I'm considering using a membership extension with Joomla and hosting the video with amazon S3. The only issue is that once someone has signed up to view or download the video if they have any web development experience they will be able to get the url of the video and freely publish it on the web. How can this be prevented? It looks like it can be done using IAM User Temporary Credentials - AWS SDK for PHP but the client would prefer not to have to pay someone to spend hours writing custom php code to get this to work. With Amazon s3 I could at least check the log files I guess to manually monitor the url but is there a way to track the url with Google Analytics? or is there a more elegant solution?

• How to use different php.ini files for different VirtualHosts?

  I have my site and it's staging subdomain running on the same CentOS machine running apache. The subdomain is created using a VirtualHost, and I use it to find any bugs before I push to production. I want the php.ini file for the staging VirtualHost to be a development one, and the production site will use a production php.ini. How can I configure apache to use different php.ini files? I don't want to use php_value/php_flag for everything, I'd rather just use the php.ini file I already have available. I've tried creating an .htaccess file that looks like this, SetEnv PHPRC /path/to/php.ini/directory This has no effect, as phpinfo() tells me it's still using /etc/php.ini. I've also tried setting PHPIniDir for both virtual hosts (www and staging) and it complains about seeing the directive twice.

  In your experience, does TDD prove to be a useful approach in all development projects? Do you take the approach of TDD even when working on an existing project? Also, how does mocking tie in with a TDD discipline? I'm not looking for opinions, I'm looking for developers' advice, tips and learning resources regarding TDD's usage based on their experience. • Wiki based requirements engineering tool

  Hi, I'm looking to to build a wiki based tool the helps/aides in the requirements engineering process. More specifically I am hoping to end up with a tool that helps inexperienced users easily create and design requirements documents on a wiki platform. I was wondering if there exist any wiki/wiki platforms that either already exist or are easily extendible or would be worth looking at that for this purpose. For instance some of the features I was hoping to add would be to add structure to a document so that information is filled out in a standardised manner. Another idea I was looking at was to somehow create relationships between different types of documents (for example- a goal diagram gets evolves/ helps in the development of the class diagram). So far I have come across FOSwiki which claims to to fully customisalble...but I'm not sure what it means and what I can really do with that. Any input on FOSwiki is also highly appreciated.

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • If you had two projects with the same specification and only one was developed using TDD how could you tell?

  I was asked this question in an interview and it has been bugging me ever since. You have two projects, both with the same specification but only one of these projects was developed using Test Driven Development. You are given the source for both but with the tests removed from the TDD project. How can you tell which was developed using TDD? All I was able to muster up was something about the classes being more 'broken up' in to smaller chunks and having more visible APIs, not my proudest moment. I would be very interested to hear a good answer to this question.

  My complete requirement is development of a chat engine - including server, clients etc. Currently I am working on things at my desktop only but once done, I have to host it; basically incorporate it with in a site for chatting purpose. So, now my problem is: I am not clear about how the actual data flow is? I have googled and read about xmpp (a book by Peter Andre) also but I am not clear about the flow and what are the actual requirements to do the above mentioned task. What I currently know is: 1) I need a server - so selected ejabberd 2) I need client - still not sure which one to use and one other doubt is how this client thing will work when deployed on some website for chatting purpose. 3) Some library - don't know which one and what is the purpose? Can anyone guide me?

• How to unit test image processing code?

  I'm working in image processing (mainly OCR) and I wonder how I should integrate unit tests in my development. I'm already using unit tests for more "common" type of code but when dealing with image processing code I'm not sure how to deal with it. This kind of code always need some image data input/output and mocking this is not obvious. For now I'm mostly doing integration tests but they take a while to run and I would like some ideas on how to break down this kind of code into unit tests so that I can run them more quickly.
