• IIS7 failover cluster across datacenters

  Hello, I have servers in two different datacenters with each datacenter getting static IPs. What I would like to do is setup the servers as IIS7 servers and allowing them to failover from datacenter to datacenter with little (or preferably) no interruption. Servers on both sides are running Windows Server 2008 x64 with IIS7 (or 7.5 if needed). I am interested in how to point DNS traffic to the new datacenter without manual human intervention. For example: Datacenter A: IP: 192.168.1.115 Servers: Server 2008 x64 w/ IIS 7 Datacenter B: IP: 192.168.1.220 Servers: Server 2008 x64 w/ IIS 7 Other information: Domain Name: Example.org Domain DNS: 192.168.1.115 If Datacenter A connectivity went down (broken service line, etc.) how does the traffic know to route to Datacenter B on 192.168.1.220? • How can I connect JConsole to WebLogic using the WL SSL Listen Port

  I would like to be able to use JConsole on remote WebLogic servers via the multiplexer port on SSL. Is it possible this without doing any configuration changes WebLogic? Only by adding some jars (e.g. wljmxclient.jar) or parameters to JConsole. I've tried with variations of the following command without success: $JAVA_HOME/bin/jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=$JAVA_HOME/lib/jconsole.jar:\ $JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar:$WL_HOME/server/lib/wljmxclient.jar \ -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote -debug \ service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/iiop://server_name:7441/jmxrmi I think that one of the problem is that the SSL is not enabled in JConsole.

• "domain crashed" when creating new Xen instance

  I have downloaded a Xen virtual machine image from the appscale project, and I am trying to start it up. • Is there a blog tool with support for tagging posts, only displaying posts with certain combinations

  What I want: A blog. I can tag posts, e.g. "A" or "B" or "all," and then you can either 1) click to only view posts tagged "A" or "all" or 2) even more ideally, I can set it so you automatically see posts tagged "A" or "all" when you log in. LaTeX support--I can type in LaTeX in the editor and it will show the math properly. No anonymous anything--must sign up and be logged in to view and comment Not as important, but convenient: Admin controls, e.g. detailed statistics, see who posts or views what when, control who posts / views, etc. Hosting: Ideally, if there's some software I can install on "my" own server, that would be ideal. But if we can't host it, it'd still be good to find some free (or maybe even paid) service elsewhere that would host the blog if it provided those tools. Any thoughts? I have no experience with this. • Using the Onboard VGA output with a PCIe video card. Both nVidia

  I have 2 video cards, one On board, a nVidia 6150SE nForce 430 and a PCIe nVidia GeForce GT 220 1GB DDR2 RAM I have already configured the PCIe card to use the dual monitor feature, using the VGA and HDMI ports, but now I want to add a third monitor, using the On board VGA port I have managed to enable the On board graphics processor, which is taking 400MB of ram, but I cant manage to use it, nvidia-settings does not detect it, like it's not usable (but is there) My questions are the following: How can I manage to get the On board VGA display to work together with the PCIe graphics card? If possible, how can I recover those 400 MB the on board card is taking (even without being used) or how can I get it to use the PCIe card available memory? System Details: Linux 2.6.35-28-generic i686 Ubuntu 10.10 (All updates installed) NVIDIA Driver Version: 260.19.06 (Official) If more info is needed please let me know. • Luminis and Google Apps Single Sign On

  We are a community college that is plodding forward with a Google Apps for Education implementation. There is support for Single Sign On and a fair amount of documentation for implementing it. We are looking to provide integration with our portal which is currently Luminis 3 (we are upgrading to Luminis 4 within a year). There is documentation available for Luminis specific integration, but apparently it is by request only. I have put the request in to SungardHE (where we license Luminis) and am waiting for a response. My questions are as follows... Is anyone here running Luminis? Have you tried to integrate it with a 3rd party email service like Google Apps for Education or Microsoft LiveEDU? If so, can you elaborate on implementation details above and beyond your Luminis installation and Google Apps setup? Looking for more of a general road map and differences between integration options with Luminis 3 and Luminis 4. Thanks!

• Using Lambdas for return values in Rhino.Mocks

  In a recent StackOverflow question, someone showed some sample code they’d like to be able to use.  The particular syntax they used isn’t supported by Rhino.Mocks, but it was an interesting idea that I thought could be easily implemented with an extension method. Background When stubbing a method return value, Rhino.Mocks supports the following syntax: dependency.Stub(s => s.GetSomething()).Return(new Order()); The method signature is generic and therefore you get compile-time type checking that the object you’re returning matches the return value defined by the “GetSomething” method. You could also have Rhino.Mocks execute arbitrary code using the “Do” method: dependency.Stub(s => s.GetSomething()).Do((Func<Order>) (() => new Order())); This requires the cast though.  It works, but isn’t as clean as the original poster wanted.  They showed a simple example of something they’d like to see: dependency.Stub(s => s.GetSomething()).Return(() => new Order()); Very clean, simple and no casting required.  While Rhino.Mocks doesn’t support this syntax, it’s easy to add it via an extension method. The Rhino.Mocks “Stub” method returns an IMethodOptions<T>.  We just need to accept a Func<T> and use that as the return value.  At first, this would seem straightforward: public static IMethodOptions<T> Return<T>(this IMethodOptions<T> opts, Func<T> factory) { opts.Return(factory()); return opts; } And this would work and would provide the syntax the user was looking for.  But the problem with this is that you loose the late-bound semantics of a lambda.  The Func<T> is executed immediately and stored as the return value.  At the point you’re setting up your mocks and stubs (the “Arrange” part of “Arrange, Act, Assert”), you may not want the lambda executing – you probably want it delayed until the method is actually executed and Rhino.Mocks plugs in your return value. So let’s make a few small tweaks: public static IMethodOptions<T> Return<T>(this IMethodOptions<T> opts, Func<T> factory) { opts.Return(default(T)); // required for Rhino.Mocks on non-void methods opts.WhenCalled(mi => mi.ReturnValue = factory()); return opts; } As you can see, we still need to set up some kind of return value or Rhino.Mocks will complain as soon as it intercepts a call to our stubbed method.  We use the “WhenCalled” method to set the return value equal to the execution of our lambda.  This gives us the delayed execution we’re looking for and a nice syntax for lambda-based return values in Rhino.Mocks.   I buy a domain from GoDaddy. Let's call this domain as abc.com. I've a hosting account on web hosting A with abc.com as my primary domain. I created a sub-domain pic.abc.com and I wish it to be pointed to my new hosting account. This web hosting B also use abc.com as the primary domain. The main purpose of doing this because I only want to use web hosting B to host my pic.abc.com contents. That's all. Other content from *.abc.com and abc.com will be remain in web hosting A. How to do this? Note 1: I try to add pic.abc.com as an add-on domain in my web hosting B account. Unfortunately, I couldn't do that. Note 2: I also try to use URL forwarding method using DNS management service like DNS Social. It doesn't work. Note 3: I'm using WordPress on the pic.abc.com site. • Google, typography, and cognitive fluency for persuasion

  Cognitive fluency is - roughly - how easy it is to think about something. Mere Exposure (or familiarity) effects are basically about reacting more favourably to things you see a lot. Which is part of why marketers in generic spaces like insipid mass-market lager will spend quite so much money on getting their logo daubed about the place; or that guy at the bus stop starts to look like a dating prospect after a month or two. Recent thinking suggests that exposure effects likely spin off cognitive fluency. We react favourably to things that are easier to think about. I had to give tech support to an older relative recently, and suggested they Google the problem. They were confused. They could not, apparently, Google the problem, because part of it was that their Google toolbar had mysteriously vanished. Once I'd finished trying not to laugh, I started thinking about typography. This is going somewhere, I promise. Google is a ubiquitous brand. Heck, it's a verb, and their recent, jaw-droppingly well constructed Paris advert is more or less about that ubiquity. It trades on Google's integration into any information-seeking behaviour. But, as my tech support encounter suggests, people settle into comfortable patterns of thinking about things. They build schemas, and altering them can take work. Maybe the ubiquity even works to cement that. Alongside their online effort, Google is running billboard campaigns to advertise Chrome, a free product in a crowded space. They are running these ads in some kind of kooky Calibri / Comic Sans hybrid. Now, at first it seems odd that one of the world's more ubiquitous brands needs to run a big print campaign in public places - surely they have all the fluency they need? Well, not so much. Chrome, after all, is not the same as their core product, so there's some basic awareness work to do, and maybe a whole new batch of exposure effect to try and grab. But why the typeface? It's heavily foregrounded, and the ads are extremely textual. Plus, don't we all know that jovial, off-beat fonts look unprofessional, or something? There's a whole bunch of people who want (often rightly) to ban Comic Sans I wonder, though. Are Google trying to subtly disrupt cognitive fluency? There's an interesting paper (pdf) about - among other things - the effects of typography on they way people answer survey questions. Participants given the slightly harder to read question gave more abstract answers. The paper references other work suggesting that generally speaking, less-fluent question framing elicits more considered answers. The Chrome ad typeface is less fluent for print. Reactions may therefore be more considered, abstract, and disruptive. Is that, in fact, what Google need? They have brand ubiquity, but they want here to change accustomed behaviour, to get people to think about changing their browser. Is this actually a very elegant piece of persuasive information design? If you think about their "what is a browser?" vox pop research video, there's certainly a perceptual barrier they're going to have to tackle somehow.

• Apache doesn't start on Windows XP Professional SP3

  I have XAMPP installed on my PC, and it works fine. Every service starts fine except Apache. I went to Services in Administrative Tools, and tried to start it from there, without success. I tried XAMPP Shell to run Apache by typing: xampp_cli start apache. That didn't work, either. I also tried reinstallling XAMPP, turning my computer off/on, restoring the registry from when I first installed XAMPP when Apache worked but still, nothing changed. Any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

• Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus notes senders

  Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

  I would like to enable the openssl extension in php.ini. I uncommented the extension=php_openssl.dll restarted apache service, but it still doesn't works. In the apache error log I've found PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:/Program Files (x86)/mypath/php/ext\\php_openssl.dll' - The operating system cannot run %1.\r\n in Unknown on line 0 I tried to follow some tutorials which said that I have to copy ssleay32.dll and libeay32.dll to the windows/system32 directory, but it still doesn't works. Does anyone know how to install it properly?

  I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

  When I open Reporting Services Configuration Manager on my server, an error message appears that says: Reporting Services Configuration Manager An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 800706B3 This error appears before I can even attempt to connect to an SSRS instance. In addition to this problem, I'm not able to connect to my SSRS instance via SSMS on my desktop. When I attempt to connect, I get the following error message: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.   I'm using Windows XP SP3 logged in as the administrator. I had RAID Mirroring running. The motherboard broke earlier in the year. When I got a new battery I did not resync. • Cant get XAMPP Server to run?

  I recently installed XAMPP server with PHP, MySQL, and Apache, and I had a friend help me load and configure it and it worked fine. I was able to play around with it, and load anything I wanted and I was able to confirm that it was working. When I went back to use it today, and I tried to run it Apache wont start up now. I imagine I either need to stop another service or there is something not allowing me to start up XAMPP, because even when I try to run the XAMPP_START script from the command line, it wont start.

• SQL SERVER – CXPACKET – Parallelism – Advanced Solution – Wait Type – Day 7 of 28

  Earlier we discussed about the what is the common solution to solve the issue with CXPACKET wait time. Today I am going to talk about few of the other suggestions which can help to reduce the CXPACKET wait. If you are going to suggest that I should focus on MAXDOP and COST THRESHOLD – I totally agree. I have covered them in details in yesterday’s blog post. Today we are going to discuss few other way CXPACKET can be reduced. Potential Reasons: If data is heavily skewed, there are chances that query optimizer may estimate the correct amount of the data leading to assign fewer thread to query. This can easily lead to uneven workload on threads and may create CXPAKCET wait. While retrieving the data one of the thread face IO, Memory or CPU bottleneck and have to wait to get those resources to execute its tasks, may create CXPACKET wait as well. Data which is retrieved is on different speed IO Subsystem. (This is not common and hardly possible but there are chances). Higher fragmentations in some area of the table can lead less data per page. This may lead to CXPACKET wait. As I said the reasons here mentioned are not the major cause of the CXPACKET wait but any kind of scenario can create the probable wait time. Best Practices to Reduce CXPACKET wait: Refer earlier article regarding MAXDOP and Cost Threshold. De-fragmentation of Index can help as more data can be obtained per page. (Assuming close to 100 fill-factor) If data is on multiple files which are on multiple similar speed physical drive, the CXPACKET wait may reduce. Keep the statistics updated, as this will give better estimate to query optimizer when assigning threads and dividing the data among available threads. Updating statistics can significantly improve the strength of the query optimizer to render proper execution plan. This may overall affect the parallelism process in positive way. Bad Practice: In one of the recent consultancy project, when I was called in I noticed that one of the ‘experienced’ DBA noticed higher CXPACKET wait and to reduce them, he has increased the worker threads. The reality was increasing worker thread has lead to many other issues. With more number of the threads, more amount of memory was used leading memory pressure. As there were more threads CPU scheduler faced higher ‘Context Switching’ leading further degrading performance. When I explained all these to ‘experienced’ DBA he suggested that now we should reduce the number of threads. Not really! Lower number of the threads may create heavy stalling for parallel queries. I suggest NOT to touch the setting of number of the threads when dealing with CXPACKET wait. Read all the post in the Wait Types and Queue series. Note: The information presented here is from my experience and I no way claim it to be accurate. I suggest reading book on-line for further clarification. All the discussion of Wait Stats over here is generic and it varies by system to system. You are recommended to test this on development server before implementing to production server. • Can't access Linux machine from the network, network from the machine is fine

  I'm having issues with a machine that stopped replicating with mysql. It's managed by a guy on another continent but recently I've had to get involved. The server is running Ubuntu server 9.10 I can't log in with SSH, there is no response. On the server itself I can ssh to localhost fine. I thought maybe it's the firewall rules. I'm no expert on IP Tables, but I believe that's not the issue as I removed all the rules. But it still won't let me in. Any ideas? it's acting from other machines as though the service isn't listening, but I know that it is. It's like this for all services.

• mac osx cannot connect to windows 7 machine

  I have a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) setup on a network with several Windows 7 machines. When trying to place a large file on a Windows share the connection to the Windows share gets lost and I am unable to reconnect until I reboot the Mac. I know this is on the Windows side because the Mac can connect and transfer files to Server 2008 and XP without issue. Looking in the log file I see this message SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 12 I have tried restarting the com.apple.netauth.sysagent service but that did not resolve the situation. I can do an nslookup to the Windows 7 machine, but trying to ping the machine by hostname always gives a hostname lookup failure (I can ping via IP address). I cannot connect to the machine via IP adress either. Any help would be appreciated.
