  • Application stuck in TCP retransmit

    I am running Linux kernel 3.13 (Ubuntu 14.04) on two Virtual Machines each of which operates inside two different servers running ESXi 5.1. There is a zeromq client-server application running between the two VMs. After running for about 10-30 minutes, this application consistently hangs due to inability to retransmit a lost packet. When I run the same setup over Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux 3.11), the application never fails If you notice below, "ss" (socket statistics) shows 1 packet lost, sk_wmem_queued of 14110 (i.e. w14110) and a high rto (120000). State Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address:Port Peer Address:Port ESTAB 0 12350 192.168.2.122:41808 192.168.2.172:55550 timer:(on,16sec,10) uid:1000 ino:35042 sk:ffff880035bcb100 <- skmem:(r0,rb648720,t0,tb1164800,f2274,w14110,o0,bl0) ts sack cubic wscale:7,7 rto:120000 rtt:7.5/3 ato:40 mss:8948 cwnd:1 ssthresh:21 send 9.5Mbps unacked:1 retrans:1/10 lost:1 rcv_rtt:1476 rcv_space:37621 Since this has happened so consistently, I was able to capture the TCP log in wireshark. I found that the packet which is lost does get retransmitted and even acknowledged by the TCP in the other OS (the sequence number is seen in the ACK), but the sender doesn't seem to understand this ACK and continues retransmitting. MTU is 9000 on both virtual machines and througout the route. The packets being sent are large in size. As I said earlier, this does not happen on Ubuntu 12.04 (kernel 3.11). So I did a diff on the TCP config options (seen via "sysctl -a |grep tcp ") between 14.04 and 12.04 and found the following differences. I also noticed that net.ipv4.tcp_mtu_probing=0 in both configurations.   • Why not .NET-style delegates rather than closures in Java?

    OK, this is going to be my beating a dying horse for the 3rd time. However, this question is different from my earlier two about closures/delegates, which asks about plans for delegates and what are the projected specs and implementation for closures. This question is about - why is the Java community struggling to define 3 different types of closures when we could simply steal the whole concept of delegates lock, stock and barrel from our beloved and friendly neighbour - Microsoft. There are two non-technical conclusions I would be very tempted to jump into: The Java community should hold up its pride, at the cost of needing to go thro convoluted efforts, by not succumbing to borrowing any Microsoft concepts or otherwise vindicate Microsoft's brilliance. Delegates is a Microsoft patented technology. Alright, besides the above two possibilities, Q1. Is there any weakness or inadequacy in msft-styled delegates that the three (or more) forms of closures would be addressing? Q2. I am asking this while shifting between java and c# and it intrigues me that c# delegates does exactly what I needed. Are there features that would be implemented in closures that are not currently available in C# delegates? If so what are they because I cannot see what I need more than what C# delegates has adequately provided me? Q3. I know that one of the concerns about implementing closures/delegates in java is the reduction of orthogonality of the language, where more than one way is exposed to perform a particular task. Is it worth the level convolution and time spent to avoid delegates just to ensure java retains its level of orthogonality? In SQL, we know that it is advisable to break orthogonality by frequently adequately satisfying only the 2nd normal form. Why can't java be subjected to reduction of orthogonality and OO-ness for the sake of simplicity? Q4. The architecture of JVM is technically constrained from implementing .NET-styled delegates. If this reason WERE (subjunctive to emphasize unlikelihood) true, then why can't the three closures proposals be hidden behind a simple delegate keyword or annotation: if we don't like to use @delegate, we could use @method. I cannot see how delegate statement format is more complex than the three closure proposals.

    I need an easy way to iterate over multiple collections without actually merging them, and I couldn't find anything built into .NET that looks like it does that. It feels like this should be a somewhat common situation. I don't want to reinvent the wheel.   • .NET MVC Ajax Form - How do you hide it?

    Ok, everything is 'functionally' working with what I am attempting to accomplish and once again, I am sure this is something dumb, but I cannot figure out how to do this one thing. I have an edit form for an entity, lets say a car. This 'car' can have 0 - many passengers. So on my edit form, I have all the fields for the car, then a list view showing each passenger (partial). I also have a 'add new passenger' button that will render a new partial view that allows you to enter a passenger. This has a cancel link and an add button to submit an Ajax form. When you add a passenger, the passenger is automatically added to the list, but I need the enter passenger form to go away. I have tried using the onSuccess and onComplete functions to hide the div that the form is in, but both render just the partial view HTML elements (white screen, text) and not the partialView in the context of the entire page.     Hi, I'm building an app using ASP.NET MVC which I want to use a strongly type view model, which contains a List called items which contains an id int and itemName string. The view model also conatins a List called people, and the Person class contains a List. The way I want to display the information is as a table, with each row having a column of Person name, then n number of columns which contain checkboxes, one for each of the List, and checked based on whether the Person's List (called items) contains the id of the Item. I have the display working fine, but I'm struggling to understand how to name the items so that the posted method can read the data.   • How can I await the first completed async task of a list in .Net?

    My input is a long list of files located on an Amazon S3 server. I'd like to download the metadata of the files, compute the hashes of the local files, and compare the metadata hash with the local files' hash. Currently, I use a loop to start all the metadata downloads asynchronously, then as each completes, compute MD5 on the local file if needed and compare. I'd rather process them in the order that they complete so that I get them faster. The MD5 calculation is long and synchronous. I tried making it async but the process locked up. I think that the MD5 task was added to the end of .Net's task list and it didn't get to run until all the downloads completed. Ideally, I process the response as they arrive, not in order, and the MD5 is asynchronous but gets a chance to run. The whole loop takes about 75s, up from 45s, and the first file's MD5 result happens after 40s of waiting.

  • What am I missing in this ASP.NET XSS Security Helper class?

    I need a generic method for preventing XSS attacks in ASP.NET. The approach I came up with is a ValidateRequest method that evaluates the HttpRequest for any potential issues, and if issues are found, redirect the user to the same page, but in a away that is not threatening to the application. (Source code below) While I know this method will prevent most XSS attacks, I am not certain that I am adequately preventing all possible attacks while also minimizing false positives. So, what is the most effective way to adequately prevent all possible attacks, while minimizing false positives?   • JQuery Menu plugins under ASP.NET MVC seem to only work in Chrome, but not in IE & FireFox

    Recently, I was trying to prototype some jQuery-based menu into ASP.NET MVC. Just to name two examples here: plugins.jquery.com/project/columnview www.filamentgroup.com/lab/jquery_ipod_style_and_flyout_menus/ Their demo page looks great, but when I integrate their sample code into MVC, the script no longer works in IE and FireFox, but it seems to work just fine under Google Chrome. Can someone kindly enough to point out what I missed? I will be honest here. I am still new to JavaScript, so it is still a learning phase to me, so any help is highly appreciated. I have placed a copy of my VS2010 solution zip file @ http://db.tt/0UNDkN Here is what I did. (If you download the solution file and run it, you should be able to repro this as well). Next, tried with FireFox, not working either, same result as IE.     Hi, I am new to MVC and have a grasp of the basic model, but still doing everything with postbacks etc. One aspect of the UI I want to build is to have a drop-down-list of items with a button to add an item to the database and refresh the list. Achieving this with WebForms was straight forward as everything was wrapped in UpdatePanels, but what is the best approach to achieve this using MVC? Also with the strongly typed View how do I pass the Model or just the SelectList Property to the UserControl or is this not the case? Nor sure if there should be form in the dialog div? or how that is going to postback via ajax. Some examples show a lot of ajax code in the page something like: $.ajax({...}); I assume doing this using jquery is more code than asp.net webforms, but there is just more code to see doing a "View Source" on a page? Your comments appreciated.
