  I have a web client and a EJB project, which I created with Eclipse 3.4. When I want to deploy it on Jboss 5.0.1, I receive the error below. • Weblogic is slow to start (11mins) under VM (VirtualBox and VMware)

  (SOLVED! BY FAKING SYSTEM RANDOM GENERATOR, SEE BELOW) I'm setting up a VM image for my dev/build team. Inside that VM a Weblogic domain should be running. I use Ububtu server distro, WLS 9.2MP3 + ALSB. Everything works OK, quite fast, but at the start time the WLS stops twice for a measurable amounts of time. Two stops in total amount to about 10 minutes delay. For tasks where deployment requires server restart it's very annoying. :-( Sleeping time is not constant, sometimes the server starts very fast, sometimes so-so, sometimes 10 minutes or more. Interesting that if I press Enter while looking at the stopped server, it wakes up much faster, sometimes after a few seconds. WLST (Weblogic Jython shell) is also hanging for quite a time when executed in VM. It doesn't react to Enter though. Here must be some developers who run WLS with a VM. I wonder if others have the same problem? Was someone able to solve it? • Crash: iPhone Threading with Blocks

  I have some convenience methods set up for threading with blocks (using PLBlocks). Then in the main portion of my code, I call the method -fetchArrivalsForLocationIDs:callback:errback:, which runs some web API calls in the background. Here's the problem: when I comment out the 2 NSAutoreleasePool-related lines in JTBlockThreading.m, of course I get lots of Object 0x6b31280 of class __NSArrayM autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking errors. However, if I uncomment them, the app frequently crashes on the [pool release]; line, sometimes saying malloc: *** error for object 0x6e3ae10: pointer being freed was not allocated" *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug. • Android map performance with > 800 overlays of KML data

  I have some a shape file which I have converted to a KML file that I wish to read coordinates from and then draw paths between the coordinates on a MapView. With the help of this great post: How to draw a path on a map using kml file? I have been able to read the the KML into an ArrayList of "Placemarks". This great blog post then showed how to take a list of GeoPoints and draw a path: http://djsolid.net/blog/android---draw-a-path-array-of-points-in-mapview The example in the above post only draws one path between some points however and since I have many more paths than that I am running into some performance problems. I'm currently adding a new RouteOverlay for each of the separate paths. This results in me having over 800 overlays when they have all been added. This has a performance hit and I would love some input on what I can do to improve it. Here are some options I have considered: Try to add all the points to a List which then can be passed into a class that will extend Overlay. In that new class perhaps it would be possible to add and draw the paths in a single Overlay layer? I'm not sure on how to implement this though since the paths are not always intersecting and they have different start and end points. At the moment I'm adding each path which has several points to it's own list and then I add that to an Overlay. That results in over 700 overlays... Simplify the KML or SHP. Instead of having over 700 different paths, perhaps there is someway to merge them into perhaps 100 paths or less? Since alot of paths are intersected at some point it should be possible to modify the original SHP file so that it merges all intersections. Since I have never worked with these kinds of files before I have not been able to find a way to do this in GQIS. If someone knows how to do this I would love for some input on that. • Best way for an external (remote) graphics designer to style ASP.NET MVC 4 app?

  My customer has his own graphics designer he wants to use to style his web application we're building in ASP.NET MVC 4. Our solution is in Bitbucket, but if he can't run it what choices do we have? I doubt he uses Visual Studio 2012. One idea is for us to publish to our solution to a file system, send it to him, have him create a local IIS website on his machine (assuming he isn't using a Mac). Mocking data or pointing to a test SQL in Azure isn't a problem. Then he can make changes to .css and .cshtml files. Will this even work? The point is that he needs to be able to test his changes. I know he can modify the views and just check-in. But he needs to deliver a working design. So it seems inefficient. The graphics designer will have access to our test site so he can see how it works, what data we have and fields. Another idea is for him to build a static mock site using just HTML/CSS. Later I'd integrate his styles into customer's solution, split his html into partial views which we use and add Razor syntax. Again, we'd like to leverage graphics designer for all of this. Is there a best practice documented around this subject? How do other teams deal with this situation?

  We are having a strange problem with our SVN repository One particular project is failing to check out on some dev's workstations. The error is: svn: E720005: Can't open file 'C:\path\.svn\pristine\4e\4e576fad0f625706379863e6051aac33097dbee0.svn-base': Access is denied. All branches, tags and trunk fail at the same point of checkout Other projects in the repository can be checked out fine One of our devs can check out the problem project fine. We have tried 3 different versions of TortoiseSVN (both UI and command line) and another build of win32svn. The one who can check out is using the same client version as one who cannot. Any ideas?

  I have a legacy ASP.NET 3.5 web site that I’ve upgraded to a .NET 4 web application. At the same time, I upgraded to Entity Framework 6. The page in question uses the ASP.NET EntityDataSource control, consumed by a Telerik RadGrid. This is a fabulous combination for putting a huge amount of functionality on a page in a very short time. Unfortunately, the 6.0.1 release of EF6 doesn’t support EntityDataSource. According to the people in charge, support is planned but there’s no timeline for an EntityDataSource build that works with EF6.  I’m not sure what to do in the meantime. Should I back out EF6 or manually wire up the RadGrid? The upshot is that you might want to rethink plans to upgrade to Entity Framework 6 for Web forms projects if they rely on that handy control.   My cousin got (legally) a laptop model HP Pavilion G4 1303AU from the government of my state. The laptop dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows 7. Everything is great except the BIOS logo at boot which I would like to change but don't know how to. I tried to flash a new BIOS firmware, but this didn't change the logo. I found this link for the same model and the same problem, but no success there either. Also I saw this blog post which wasn't helpful, except for this comment that mentioned an image in .ROM format. Not wishing to decompile and recompile the BIOS, can someone help me out with a step by step guide ?

• Unable to update the EntitySet because it has a DefiningQuery and no &lt;UpdateFunction&gt; element

  When working with ADO.NET Entity Data Model, its often common that we generate entity schema for more than a single table from our Database.  With Entity Model generation automated with Visual Studio support, it becomes even tempting to create and work entity models to achieve an object mapping relationship. One of the errors that you might hit while trying to update an entity set either programmatically using context.SaveChanges or while using the automatic insert/update code generated by GridView etc., is “Unable to update the EntitySet <EntityName> because it has a DefiningQuery and no <UpdateFunction> element exists in the <ModificationFunctionMapping> element to support the current operation” While the description is pretty lengthy, the immediate thing that would come to our mind is to open our the entity model generated code and see if you can update it accordingly. However, the first thing to check if that, if the Entity Set is generated from a table, whether the Table defines a primary key.  Most of the times, we create tables with primary keys.  But some reference tables and tables which don’t have a primary key cannot be updated using the context of Entity and hence it would throw this error.  Unless it is a View, in which case, the default model is read-only, most of the times the above error occurs since there is no primary key defined in the table. There are other reasons why this error could popup which I am not going into for the sake of simplicity of the post.  If you find something new, please feel free to share it in comments.   Running Apache2 on Ubuntu Precise64 in Vagrant. When I try to start it, it says: vagrant@precise64:/etc/apache2$ /etc/init.d/apache2 start * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed. Output of config test was: AH00534: apache2: Configuration error: No MPM loaded. Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. But the thing is, my /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file doesn't call for MPM anywhere! I would paste it here but it would make for a huge post... I tried looking up the error log, but I can't find that anywhere, either. Help?

• How to get the MSOnlineBackup Cmdlets?

  I am trying to manage the Azure Online Backup from PowerShell. There is a set of Cmdlets called MSOnlineBackup. See technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249523.aspx. When I try to run: Import-Module MSOnlineBackup I get: The specified module 'MSOnlineBackup' was not loaded because no valid module file was found in any module directory. On the technet page it states that it is included in 4.0.4.0, If I run: $PSVersionTable.PSVersion It returns: Major: 4 Minor: 0 Build: -1 Revision: -1 I am running Windows 8.1. As you can probably tell I am no Powershell expert. I have also tried installed the Azure Backup Agent, but it says it needs a Server operating system. Can anyone tell me how I can get the MSOnlineBackup module on my machine so I can start automating Windows Azure Backup?

• VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error 2 (0x2).

  Hello! This is not a critical case but really annoying. I'm running vCenter 4 (Build 208156) and when we reeboot the server the VirtualCenter Server service can't start and gives the following error "The VMware VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error 2 (0x2)." And if I try to start the service it fails again giving the same error. What I'll need to do is to stop the IIS Admin service and then start the VirtualCenter Server service and then the IIS Admin service, and everything runs fine until the next reboot. Can someone tell me how to fix this annoying error? Regards

  This is followup post of my earlier article SQL SERVER – Convert IN to EXISTS – Performance Talk, after reading all the comments I have received I felt that I could write more on the same subject to clear few things out. First let us run following four queries, all of them are giving exactly same resultset. USE AdventureWorks GO -- use of = SELECT * FROM HumanResources.Employee E WHERE E.EmployeeID = ( SELECT EA.EmployeeID FROM HumanResources.EmployeeAddress EA WHERE EA.EmployeeID = E.EmployeeID) GO -- use of in SELECT * FROM HumanResources.Employee E WHERE E.EmployeeID IN ( SELECT EA.EmployeeID FROM HumanResources.EmployeeAddress EA WHERE EA.EmployeeID = E.EmployeeID) GO -- use of exists SELECT * FROM HumanResources.Employee E WHERE EXISTS ( SELECT EA.EmployeeID FROM HumanResources.EmployeeAddress EA WHERE EA.EmployeeID = E.EmployeeID) GO -- Use of Join SELECT * FROM HumanResources.Employee E INNER JOIN HumanResources.EmployeeAddress EA ON E.EmployeeID = EA.EmployeeID GO Let us compare the execution plan of the queries listed above. Click on image to see larger image. It is quite clear from the execution plan that in case of IN, EXISTS and JOIN SQL Server Engines is smart enough to figure out what is the best optimal plan of Merge Join for the same query and execute the same. However, in the case of use of Equal (=) Operator, SQL Server is forced to use Nested Loop and test each result of the inner query and compare to outer query, leading to cut the performance. Please note that here I no mean suggesting that Nested Loop is bad or Merge Join is better. This can very well vary on your machine and amount of resources available on your computer. When I see Equal (=) operator used in query like above, I usually recommend to see if user can use IN or EXISTS or JOIN. As I said, this can very much vary on different system. What is your take in above query? I believe SQL Server Engines is usually pretty smart to figure out what is ideal execution plan and use it. • rpmbuild on Cent OS 6: "cpio: bad magic"

  When I try to run this command : rpmbuild -bb SPECS/software.spec I get an error when the WAR file (as in tomcat java web archive file) is being added to the rpm: error: create archive failed on file /<filepath>/<filename>.war: cpio: Bad magic This didn't use to happen. The only things that have changed since this worked was an upgrade. Further, no problems are happening like it on my CentOS 5 box. I compile and build the exact same code set on both machines, but CentOS 6 won't create an rpm. How do I troubleshoot this? I have already googled it and received few (if any) useful links. This appears nowhere in the user guide for RPM as far as I can see, and Maximum RPM has no section on this.

• Installation stuck on "Installation Type" screen

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 with Windows 7 from a CD. I am using an HP Pavilion dm4. I've never used Ubuntu (or any Linux) before. Everything goes alright until I get to the "Installation Type" screen. Instead of giving me options, it just has a blank menu, and all the buttons are disabled. When I click "Continue", it gives me an error saying that it can't find the root or something like that. The trial version works fine, but I can't actually install it. Everything on the trial version is really slow, presumably because everything is on the CD or the Windows partition. I did some research, but the only post I could find was http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870478 Where the only advice is to format the entire drive, which I'm not willing to do. Any suggestions? I'm downloading 10.04 right now and I'm going to try with that instead. EDIT: 10.04 didn't work either. I got to the partitioning screen and got the same problem. I read some more forums, loaded up 11.10 trial from the disk, opened the Terminal and typed sudo apt-get remove dmraid and then y. Then I was actually able to see something on the "Installation type" page: "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" or "Something else". Which is weird, since Windows 7 should be installed. When I click Something Else, I get: /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 (ntfs) (208 MB) (69 MB used) /dev/sdb2 (ntfs) (477542 MB) (unknown used) /dev/sdb3 (ntfs) (18085 MB) (16094 MB used) /dev/sdb4 (fat32) (4265 MB) (3084 MB used) I have no idea what any of this means. Also, my device for boot loader installation changed from /dev/sda to /dev/sda ATA SAMSUNG MZMPA032 (32.0 GB)

• ASP.NET MVC Paging/Sorting/Filtering a list using ModelMetadata

  This post looks at how to control paging, sorting and filtering when displaying a list of data by specifying attributes in your Model using the ASP.NET MVC framework and the excellent MVCContrib library. It also shows how to hide/show columns and control the formatting of data using attributes.  This uses the Northwind database. A sample project is attached at the end of this post. Let’s start by looking at a class called ProductViewModel. The properties in the class are decorated with attributes. The OrderBy attribute tells the system that the Model can be sorted using that property. The SearchFilter attribute tells the system that filtering is allowed on that property. Filtering type is set by the  FilterType enum which currently supports Equals and Contains. SupplierID { get; set; }   [OrderBy] public bool Discontinued { get; set; } } Before we explore the code further, lets look at the UI.  The UI has a section for filtering the data. The column headers with links are sortable. Paging is also supported with the help of a pager row. The pager is rendered using the MVCContrib Pager component. The data is displayed using a customized version of the MVCContrib Grid component. The customization was done in order for the Grid to be aware of the attributes mentioned above. Now, let’s look at what happens when we perform actions on this page. The diagram below shows the process: The form on the page has its method set to “GET” therefore we see all the parameters in the query string. The query string is shown in blue above. This query gets routed to an action called Index with parameters of type ProductViewModel and PageSortOptions. The parameters in the query string get mapped to the input parameters using model binding. The ProductView object created has the information needed to filter data while the PageAndSorting object is used for paging and sorting the data. The last block in the figure above shows how the filtered and paged list is created. We receive a product list from our product repository (which is of type IQueryable) and first filter it by calliing the AsFiltered extension method passing in the productFilters object and then call the AsPagination extension method passing in the pageSort object. The AsFiltered extension method looks at the type of the filter instance passed in. It skips properties in the instance that do not have the SearchFilter attribute. For properties that have the SearchFilter attribute, it adds filter expression trees to filter against the IQueryable data. The AsPagination extension method looks at the type of the IQueryable and ensures that the column being sorted on has the OrderBy attribute. If it does not find one, it looks for the default sort field [OrderBy(IsDefault = true)]. It is required that at least one attribute in your model has the [OrderBy(IsDefault = true)]. This because a person could be performing paging without specifying an order by column. As you may recall the LINQ Skip method now requires that you call an OrderBy method before it. Therefore we need a default order by column to perform paging. The extension method adds a order expressoin tree to the IQueryable and calls the MVCContrib AsPagination extension method to page the data. Implementation Notes Auto Postback The search filter region auto performs a get request anytime the dropdown selection is changed. This contains all the information need for the view to render the Search filter section (including dropdowns),  the Html.Pager (MVCContrib) and the Html.Grid (from MVCContrib). It also stores the state of the search filters so that they can recreate themselves when the page reloads (Viewstate, I miss you! :0)  The class diagram for the container class is shown below.   Custom MVCContrib Grid The MVCContrib grid default behavior was overridden so that it would auto generate the columns and format the columns based on the metadata and also make it aware of our custom attributes (see MetaDataGridModel in the sample code). The Grid ensures that the ShowForDisplay on the column is set to true This can also be set by the ScaffoldColumn attribute ref: http://bradwilson.typepad.com/blog/2009/10/aspnet-mvc-2-templates-part-2-modelmetadata.html) Column headers are set using the DisplayName attribute Column sorting is set using the OrderBy attribute. The data is formatted using the DisplayFormat attribute. Generic Extension methods for Sorting and Filtering The extension method AsFiltered takes in an IQueryable<T> and uses expression trees to query against the IQueryable data. The query is constructed using the Model metadata and the properties of the T filter (productFilters in our case). Properties in the Model that do not have the SearchFilter attribute are skipped when creating the filter expression tree.  It returns an IQueryable<T>. The extension method AsPagination takes in an IQuerable<T> and first ensures that the column being sorted on has the OrderBy attribute. If not, we look for the default OrderBy column ([OrderBy(IsDefault = true)]). We then build an expression tree to sort on this column. We finally hand off the call to the MVCContrib AsPagination which returns an IPagination<T>. This type as you can see in the class diagram above is passed to the view and used by the MVCContrib Grid and Pager components. • Real Excel Templates I

  As promised, I'm starting to document the new Excel templates that I teased you all with a few weeks back. Leslie is buried in 11g documentation and will not get to officially documenting the templates for a while. I'll do my best to be professional and not ramble on about this and that, although the weather here has finally turned and its 'scorchio' here in Colorado today. Maybe our stand of Aspen will finally come into leaf ... but I digress. Preamble These templates are not actually that new, I helped in a small way to develop them a few years back with Excel 'meistress' Shirley for a company that was trying to use the Report Manager(RR) Excel FSG outputs under EBS 12. The functionality they needed was just not there in the RR FSG templates, the templates are actually XSL that is created from the the RR Excel template builder and fed to BIP for processing. Think of Excel from our RTF templates and you'll be there ie not really Excel but HTML masquerading as Excel. Although still under controlled release in EBS they have now made their way to the standlone release and are willing to share their Excel goodness. You get everything you have with hte Excel Analyzer Excel templates plus so much more. Therein lies a question, what will happen to the Analyzer templates? My understanding is that both will come together into a single Excel template format some time in the post-11g release world. The new XLSX format for Exce 2007/10 is also in the mix too so watch this space. What more do these templates offer? Well, you can structure data in the Excel output. Similar to RTF templates you can create sheets of data that have master-detail n relationships. Although the analyzer templates can do this, you have to get into macros whereas BIP will do this all for you. You can also use native XSL functions in your data to manipulate it prior to rendering. BP functions are not currently supported. The most impressive, for me at least, is the sheet 'bursting'. You can split your hierarchical data across multiple sheets and dynamically name those sheets. Finally, you of course, still get all the native Excel functionality. Pre-reqs You must be on 10.1.3.4.1 plus the latest rollup patch, 9546699. You can patch upa BIP instance running with OBIEE, no problem You need Excel 2000 or above to build the templates Some patience - there is no Excel template builder for these new templates. So its all going to have to be done by hand. Its not that tough but can get a little 'fiddly'. You can not test the template from Excel , it has to be deployed and then run. Limitations The new templates are definitely superior to the Analyzer templates but there are a few limitations. Re-grouping is not supported. You can only follow a data hierarchy not bend it to your will unless you want to get into macros. No support for BIP functions. The templates support native XSL functions only. No template builder Getting Started The templates make the use of named cells and groups of cells to allow BIP to find the insertion point for data points. It also uses a hidden sheet to store calculation mappings from named cells to XML data elements. To start with, in the great BIP tradition, we need some sample XML data. Becasue I wanted to show the master-detail output we need some hierarchical data. If you have not yet gotten into the data templates, now is a good time, I wrote a post a while back starting from the simple to more complex. They generate ideal data sets for these templates. Building the Template For an Excel template we need to start by thinking about how we want to render the data. Come up with a sample output in Excel. Its all dummy data, nothing marked up yet with one row of data for each level. I have the department name and then a repeating row for the employees. You can apply Excel formatting to the layout. The total is going to be derived from a data element. We'll get to Excel functions later. Marking Up Cells Next we need to start marking up the cells with custom names to map them to data elements. The cell names need to follow a specific format: For data grouping, XDO_GROUP_?group_name? For data elements, XDO_?element_name? Notice the question mark delimter, the group_name and element_name are case sensitive. The next step is to find how to name cells; the easiest method is to highlight the cell and then type in the name. You can also find the Name Manager dialog. I use 2007 and its available on the ribbon under the Formulas section Go thorugh the process of naming all the cells for the element values you have. Using my data set from above.You should end up with something like this in your 'Name Manager' dialog. You can update any mistakes you might have made through this dialog. Creating Groups In the image above you can see there are a couple of named group cells. To create these its a simple case of highlighting the cells that make up the group and then naming them. For the EMP group, highlight the employee row and then type in the name, XDO_GROUP?G_EMP? Notice the 10,000 total is outside of the G_EMP group. Its actually named, XDO_?TOTAL_SALARY?, a query calculated value. For the department group, we need to include the department name cell and the sub EMP grouping and name it, XDO_GROUP?G_DEPT? Notice, the 10,000 total is included in the G_DEPT group. This will ensure it repeats at the department level. Lastly, we do need to include a special sheet in the workbook. We will not have anything meaningful in there for now, but it needs to be present. Create a new sheet and name it XDO_METADATA. The name is important as the BIP rendering engine will looking for it. For our current example we do not need anything other than the required stuff in our XDO_METADATA sheet but, it must be present. Easy enough to hide it. Here's what I have: The only cell that is important is the 'Data Constraints:' cell. The rest is optional. To save curious users getting distracted, hide the metadata sheet. Deploying & Running Templates We should now have a usable Excel template. Loading it into a report is easy enough using the browser UI, just like an RTF template. Set the template type to Excel. You will now be able to run the report and hopefully get something like this. You will not get the red highlighting, thats just some conditional formatting I added to the template using Excel functionality. Your dates are probably going to look raw too. I got around this for now using an Excel function on the cell: =--REPLACE(SUBSTITUTE(E8,"T"," "),LEN(E8)-6,6,"") Google to the rescue on that one. Try some other stuff out. To avoid constantly loading the template through the UI. If you have BIP running locally or you can access the reports repository, once you have loaded the template the first time. Just save the template directly into the report folder. I have put together a sample report using a sample data set, available here. Just drop the xml data file, EmpbyDeptExcelData.xml into 'demo files' folder and you should be good to go. Thats the basics, next we'll start using some XSL functions in the template and move onto the 'bursting' across sheets.

• Using LINQ Distinct: With an Example on ASP.NET MVC SelectListItem

  One of the things that might be surprising in the LINQ Distinct standard query operator is that it doesn’t automatically work properly on custom classes. There are reasons for this, which I’ll explain shortly. The example I’ll use in this post focuses on pulling a unique list of names to load into a drop-down list. I’ll explain the sample application, show you typical first shot at Distinct, explain why it won’t work as you expect, and then demonstrate a solution to make Distinct work with any custom class. The technologies I’m using are  LINQ to Twitter, LINQ to Objects, Telerik Extensions for ASP.NET MVC, ASP.NET MVC 2, and Visual Studio 2010. The function of the example program is to show a list of people that I follow.  In Twitter API vernacular, these people are called “Friends”; though I’ve never met most of them in real life. This is part of the ubiquitous language of social networking, and Twitter in particular, so you’ll see my objects named accordingly. Where Distinct comes into play is because I want to have a drop-down list with the names of the friends appearing in the list. Some friends are quite verbose, which means I can’t just extract names from each tweet and populate the drop-down; otherwise, I would end up with many duplicate names. Therefore, Distinct is the appropriate operator to eliminate the extra entries from my friends who tend to be enthusiastic tweeters. The sample doesn’t do anything with the drop-down list and I leave that up to imagination for what it’s practical purpose could be; perhaps a filter for the list if I only want to see a certain person’s tweets or maybe a quick list that I plan to combine with a TextBox and Button to reply to a friend. When the program runs, you’ll need to authenticate with Twitter, because I’m using OAuth (DotNetOpenAuth), for authentication, and then you’ll see the drop-down list of names above the grid with the most recent tweets from friends. Here’s what the application looks like when it runs: As you can see, there is a drop-down list above the grid. The drop-down list is where most of the focus of this article will be. There is some description of the code before we talk about the Distinct operator, but we’ll get there soon. This is an ASP.NET MVC2 application, written with VS 2010. The first column is a template that renders the user’s Avatar from a URL provided by the Twitter query. The two Lists are what the View consumes to populate the DropDownListFor and Grid. Notice that FriendNames is a List of SelectListItem, which is an MVC class. Another custom class I created is the TweetViewModel (the type of the Tweets List), shown below: namespace DistinctSelectList.Models { /// /// Info on friend tweets /// public class TweetViewModel { /// /// User's avatar /// public string ImageUrl { get; set; } /// /// User's Twitter name /// public string ScreenName { get; set; } /// /// Text containing user's tweet /// public string Tweet { get; set; } } } The initial Twitter query returns much more information than we need for our purposes and this a special class for displaying info in the View.  Now you know about the View and how it’s constructed. Let’s look at the controller next. The controller for this demo performs authentication, data retrieval, data manipulation, and view selection. I’ll skip the description of the authentication because it’s a normal part of using OAuth with LINQ to Twitter. Instead, we’ll drill down and focus on the Distinct operator. Both of these results are used in the subsequent population of the twendsVM instance that is passed to the view. Let’s dissect these two statements for clarification and focus on what is happening with Distinct. The query for friendTweets gets a list of the 20 most recent tweets (as specified by the Twitter API for friend queries) and performs a projection into the custom TweetViewModel class, repeated below for your convenience: var friendTweets = (from tweet in twitterCtx.Status where tweet.Type == StatusType.Friends select new TweetViewModel { ImageUrl = tweet.User.ProfileImageUrl, ScreenName = tweet.User.Identifier.ScreenName, Tweet = tweet.Text }) .ToList(); The LINQ to Twitter query above simplifies what we need to work with in the View and the reduces the amount of information we have to look at in subsequent queries. Given the friendTweets above, the next query performs another projection into an MVC SelectListItem, which is required for binding to the DropDownList.  This brings us to the focus of this blog post, writing a correct query that uses the Distinct operator. The query below uses LINQ to Objects, querying the friendTweets collection to get friendNames: var friendNames = (from tweet in friendTweets select new SelectListItem { Text = tweet.ScreenName, Value = tweet.ScreenName }) .Distinct() .ToList(); The above implementation of Distinct seems normal, but it is deceptively incorrect. After running the query above, by executing the application, you’ll notice that the drop-down list contains many duplicates.  This will send you back to the code scratching your head, but there’s a reason why this happens. To understand the problem, we must examine how Distinct works in LINQ to Objects. Distinct has two overloads: one without parameters, as shown above, and another that takes a parameter of type IEqualityComparer<T>.  In the case above, no parameters, Distinct will call EqualityComparer<T>.Default behind the scenes to make comparisons as it iterates through the list. You don’t have problems with the built-in types, such as string, int, DateTime, etc, because they all implement IEquatable<T>. However, many .NET Framework classes, such as SelectListItem, don’t implement IEquatable<T>. So, what happens is that EqualityComparer<T>.Default results in a call to Object.Equals, which performs reference equality on reference type objects.  You don’t have this problem with value types because the default implementation of Object.Equals is bitwise equality. However, most of your projections that use Distinct are on classes, just like the SelectListItem used in this demo application. So, the reason why Distinct didn’t produce the results we wanted was because we used a type that doesn’t define its own equality and Distinct used the default reference equality. This resulted in all objects being included in the results because they are all separate instances in memory with unique references. As you might have guessed, the solution to the problem is to use the second overload of Distinct that accepts an IEqualityComparer<T> instance. If you were projecting into your own custom type, you could make that type implement IEqualityComparer<T>, but SelectListItem belongs to the .NET Framework Class Library.  Therefore, the solution is to create a custom type to implement IEqualityComparer<T>, as in the SelectListItemComparer class, shown below: using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Web.Mvc; namespace DistinctSelectList.Models { public class SelectListItemComparer : EqualityComparer { public override bool Equals(SelectListItem x, SelectListItem y) { return x.Value.Equals(y.Value); } public override int GetHashCode(SelectListItem obj) { return obj.Value.GetHashCode(); } } } The SelectListItemComparer class above doesn’t implement IEqualityComparer<SelectListItem>, but rather derives from EqualityComparer<SelectListItem>. Microsoft recommends this approach for consistency with the behavior of generic collection classes. However, if your custom type already derives from a base class, go ahead and implement IEqualityComparer<T>, which will still work. EqualityComparer is an abstract class, that implements IEqualityComparer<T> with Equals and GetHashCode abstract methods. For the purposes of this application, the SelectListItem.Value property is sufficient to determine if two items are equal.   Since SelectListItem.Value is type string, the code delegates equality to the string class. The code also delegates the GetHashCode operation to the string class.You might have other criteria in your own object and would need to define what it means for your object to be equal. Now that we have an IEqualityComparer<SelectListItem>, let’s fix the problem. The code below modifies the query where we want distinct values: var friendNames = (from tweet in friendTweets select new SelectListItem { Text = tweet.ScreenName, Value = tweet.ScreenName }) .Distinct(new SelectListItemComparer()) .ToList(); Notice how the code above passes a new instance of SelectListItemComparer as the parameter to the Distinct operator. Now, when you run the application, the drop-down list will behave as you expect, showing only a unique set of names. In addition to Distinct, other LINQ Standard Query Operators have overloads that accept IEqualityComparer<T>’s, You can use the same techniques as shown here, with SelectListItemComparer, with those other operators as well. Now you know how to resolve problems with getting Distinct to work properly and also have a way to fix problems with other operators that require equality comparisons. @JoeMayo

• Postgresql fails to start on Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS

  I installed postgresql 9.2 from add-apt-repository ppa:pitti/postgresql using apt-get install postgresql-9.2 At the end of the install and every time I try to launch postgresql by using the following command /etc/init.d/postgresql start or service postgresql start I get this error: Error: could not exec /usr/lib/postgresql/9.2/bin/pg_ctl /usr/lib/postgresql/9.2/bin/pg_ctl start -D /var/lib/postgresql/9.2/main -l /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-9.2-main.log -s -o -c config_file="/etc/postgresql/9.2/main/postgresql.conf" : [fail] invoke-rc.d: initscript postgresql, action "start" failed. dpkg: error processing postgresql-9.2 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: postgresql-9.2 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I have tried everything found here: How to thoroughly purge and reinstall postgresql on ubuntu and here: Eliminating non working postgresql installations on ubuntu 10-04 and starting af. I have also done dpkg -P --force-remove-reinstreq postgresql-client-9.2 in my attempt to remove everything postgres related from my server. After removing postgresql I have used dpkg --get-selections | grep postg To be sure there is nothing left and I can do a clean install. I have also made sure that the files and folders mentioned in the error message have the right permissions. The /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-9.2-main.log file is empty. I have tried installing every postgresql version from 8.3 to 9.2 and I get the same error on every time. I once managed to compile postgresql from the source provided on their website but then I encountered weird errors with psycopg2 so I figured I'd install postgresql this way and avoid those errors. Also when I type apt-get install postgresql it by default tries to install the 8.3 version even when I can find the package by typing apt-get install postgresql-9.2.
