• Database doesn't update using TransactionScope

  I have a client trying to communicate with a WCF service in a transactional manner. The client passes some data to the service and the service adds the data to its database accordingly. For some reason, the new data the service submits to its database isn't being persisted. When I have a look at the table data in the Server Explorer no new rows are added...   We currently run an ecommerce solution for a leisure and travel company. Everytime we have a release, we must bring the ecommerce site down as we update database schema and the data access code. We are using a custom built ORM where each data entity is responsible for their own CRUD operations. This is accomplished by dynamically generating the SQL based on attributes in the data entity. For example, the data entity for an address would be... As you can expect, the business people are not too happy about this outage as it puts a crimp in their cash-flow. The programmers are upset as they are constantly getting in trouble for the legacy system that they inherited. Do any of you smart people out there have some suggestions?

  I wrote a short C++ program to do XOR encryption on a file, which I may use for some personal files (if it gets cracked it's no big deal - I'm just protecting against casual viewers). Basically, I take an ASCII password and repeatedly XOR the password with the data in the file. Now I'm curious, though: if someone wanted to crack this, how would they go about it? Would it take a long time? Does it depend on the length of the password (i.e., what's the big-O)?

• Dynamically update Font Size of application with a single trigger in WPF

  I have an application which has different font sizes for different controls say Button: 10, TextBlock : 12 etc. I want to give options to the user where he can select any one of the below say Normal , Small, Big, Bigger. Suppose one selects "small" I would want to decrease every distinct font size by 2. If "Big", I would want to increase every font size by 2. I hope we can do this using converter sending actual font size as parameter and render as per the selected choice if I am not wrong. What will be the best option. Sorry if my doubt is absurd or silly. Thank you.

• Pushing a vector into an vector

  I have a 2d vector typedef vector <double> record_t; typedef vector <record_t> data_t; data_t data; So my 2d vector is data here. It has elements like say, 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 4 4 4 4 4 5 5 5 5 5 Now I want to insert these elements into another 2d vector std::vector< vector<double> > window; So what I did was to create an iterator for traversing through the rows of data and pushing it into window like std::vector< std::vector<double> >::iterator data_it; for (data_it = data.begin() ; data_it != data.end() ; ++data_it){ window.push_back ( *data_it ); // Do something else } Can anybody tell me where I'm wrong or suggest a way to do this ? BTW I want to push it just element by element because I want to be able to do something else inside the loop too. i.e. I want to check for a condition and increment the value of the iterator inside. for example, if a condition satisfies then I'll do data_it+=3 or something like that inside the loop. • Servlet 3 spec and ThreadLocal

  As far as I know, Servlet 3 spec introduces asynchronous processing feature. Among other things, this will mean that the same thread can and will be reused for processing another, concurrent, HTTP request(s). This isn't revolutionary, at least for people who worked with NIO before. Anyway, this leads to another important thing: no ThreadLocal variables as a temporary storage for the request data. Because if the same thread suddenly becomes the carrier thread to a different HTTP request, request-local data will be exposed to another request. All of that is my pure speculation based on reading articles, I haven't got time to play with any Servlet 3 implementations (Tomcat 7, GlassFish 3.0.X, etc.). So, the questions: Am I correct to assume that ThreadLocal will cease to be a convenient hack to keep the request data? Has anybody played with any of Servlet 3 implementations and tried using ThreadLocals to prove the above? Apart from storing data inside HTTP Session, are there any other similar easy-to-reach hacks you could possibly advise?

  I have a task to validate addresses entered into a system I am currently creating. The system requires that address entered are validated against a valid data source. In the UK the dataset comes from the Royal Mail and is expensive to access. The data needed is post code info for the whold of europe to start with accessed by an API into the web application. There are a number of companies that offer this service, QAS Capscan Postcode anywhere These all offer the service I require. However this is expensive and in some cases not a complete data set. e.g. not Ireland I was also wondering if there would be a way to utalis the google maps API to validate this data via postal code and country. Would the google maps method be possible or do I have to go down the line of one of these expensive companies? Any thoughts on what line I should take.

  Hi all, I am csv.reader to pull in info from a very long sheet. I am doing work on that data set and then I am using the xlwt package to give me a workable excel file. However, I get this error: UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0x92 in position 34: ordinal not in range(128) My question to you all is, how can I find exactly where that error is in my data set? Also, is there some code that I can write which will look through my data set and find out where the issues lie (because some data sets run without the above error and others have problems)?

  We have an application which listens for incoming TCP requests using the Indy 10.1.1 components that ship with Delphi 2007. Occassionally we receive incoming connections which are not from our client application. Typically, one of two things happens: 1) the connection is terminated by the client before any data is received, or 2) data is received which we're not expecting and we manually terminate the connection. However, we've received connections where no data is received and appear to persist until the client terminates the connection from their end. Is there a way to terminate such a connection from the server if no data is received after a specified amount of time?

• rsyncing - ignoring checksums

  Trying to copy a bunch of data over and time, unfortunately, is of the essence. I'd like to do an rsync of all the data in one direction, pretty much rsync just clobbers what's over on the destination server. Is there a way to do an rsync and just say, "overwrite all files" Is there a better way of doing this? We're talking 500GB of data that only has to go in one direction.
