• C# Configuration Manager . ConnectionStrings

  I have a console app containing an application configuration file containing one connection string as shown below: <configuration> <connectionStrings> <add name="Target" connectionString="server=MYSERVER; Database=MYDB; Integrated Security=SSPI;" /> </connectionStrings> </configuration> When I pass this to my Connection using: ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings[1].ToString() I have two values in there, hence using the second in the collection, my question is where is this second coming from? I have checked the Bin version and original and its not mine! Its obviously a system generated one but I have not seen this before? Can anyone enlighten me? The mystery connection string is: data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true This isn't a problem as such I would just like to know why this is occuring? Thanks in advance! For future reference to those who may or may not stumble on this, after discovering the machine.config its become apparent it is bad practice to refer to a config by its index as each stack will potentially be different, which is why "Keys" are used.   Hi, I have 3 variables, each one holding a different information and send values from a text file dynamicaly. I want to put them in a Associative multi-dimensional array. let's say : $product sends car, truck, train, etc. $price sends 1000, 3000, 1500, etc. $year sends 1997, 1980, 2008, etc. How to create a function which generates an array as follow, when i execute print_r(myarray): Array ( [0] => Array ( [product] => car [price] => 1000 [year] => 1997 ) [1] => Array ( [product] => truck [price] => 3000 [year] => 1980 ) [2] => Array ( [product] => train [price] => 1500 [year] => 2008 )) and so on.   I've created an F# class to represent an array that allocates one element for each value of a specific enum. I'm using an explicit constructor that creates a dictionary from enum values to array indices, and an Item property so that you can write expressions like: let my_array = new EnumArray<EnumType, int> my_array.[EnumType.enum_value] <- 5 However, I'm getting the following obscure compilation error at the line marked with '// FS0670' below. error FS0670: This code is not sufficiently generic. The type variable ^e when ^e : enum<int> and ^e : equality and ^e : (static member op_Explicit : ^e -> int) could not be generalized because it would escape its scope. • Access class instance "name" dynamically in Python

  In plain english: I am creating class instances dynamically in a for loop, the class then defines a few attributes for the instance. I need to later be able to look up those values in another for loop. Sample code: class A: def init(self, name, attr): self.name=name self.attr=attr names=("a1", "a2", "a3") x=10 for name in names: name=A(name, x) x += 1 ... ... ... for name in names: print name.attr How can I create an identifier for these instances so they can be accessed later on by "name"? I've figured a way to get this by associating "name" with the memory location: class A: instances=[] names=[] def init(self, name, attr): self.name=name self.attr=attr A.instances.append(self) A.names.append(name) names=("a1", "a2", "a3") x=10 for name in names: name=A(name, x) x += 1 ... ... ... for name in names: index=A.names.index(name) print "name: " + name print "att: " + str(A.instances[index].att) This has had me scouring the web for 2 days now, and I have not been able to find an answer. I'm just thinking there has to be an easier way than creating your own makeshift dictionary of index numbers and I'm hoping I didn't waste 2 days looking for an answer that doesn't exist. • C# how to calculate hashcode from an object reference.

  Folks, here's a thorny problem for you! A part of the TickZoom system must collect instances of every type of object into a Dictionary< type. It is imperative that their equality and hash code be based on the instance of the object which means reference equality instead of value equality. The challenge is that some of the objects in the system have overridden Equals() and GetHashCode() for use as value equality and their internal values will change over time. That means that their Equals and GetHashCode are useless. How to solve this generically rather than intrusively? So far, We created a struct to wrap each object called ObjectHandle for hashing into the Dictionary. As you see below we implemented Equals() but the problem of how to calculate a hash code remains. public struct ObjectHandle : IEquatable<ObjectHandle>{ public object Object; public bool Equals(ObjectHandle other) { return object.ReferenceEquals(this.Object,other.Object); } } See? There is the method object.ReferenceEquals() which will compare reference equality without regard for any overridden Equals() implementation in the object. Now, how to calculate a matching GetHashCode() by only considering the reference without concern for any overridden GetHashCode() method? Ahh, I hope this give you an interesting puzzle. • Reading/Writing DataTables to and from an OleDb Database LINQ

  My current project is to take information from an OleDbDatabase and .CSV files and place it all into a larger OleDbDatabase. I have currently read in all the information I need from both .CSV files, and the OleDbDatabase into DataTables.... Where it is getting hairy is writing all of the information back to another OleDbDatabase. My problem is I could do this, but I have about 200 fields that need inserted over several tables. I'm willing to do the leg work if that's the only way to go. But I feel like there is an easier method. Is there anything in LINQ that could help me out with this?

• Creating a simple JQuery tooltip?

  Has anybody here got any experience in creating simple tooptips using JQuery? I have created a table: <tr id="mon_Section"> <td id="day_Title">Monday</td>` <td id="mon_Row" onmousemove="calculate_Time(event)"></td> </tr>` the function "calculate_Time" will be called and this gets the X position of the mouse cursor and from the value, uses IF and ELSE-IF statements to calculate the values of other variables i have created: var mon_Pos; var hour; var minute; var orig; var myxpos; function calculate_Time(event) { myxpos = event.pageX; myxpos = myxpos-194; if (myxpos<60) { orig = myxpos; minute = myxpos; hour = 07; } else if (myxpos>=60 && myxpos<120) { orig = myxpos; minute=myxpos-60; hour=08; } } How do i go about creating a stylized tooltip containing the Hour and Minute variables that i created, I need the tooltip to be updated everytime the X position of the cursor changes. I know that with myxpos variable does change whenever the mouse is moved because i tried it out using an alert(myxpos) and as expected, if the mouse moves, a new alert box popups with a new value. I just cant work out how to place that value in a tooltip?

• Pointers, am I doing them correctly? Objective-c/cocoa

  I have this in my @interface struct track currentTrack; struct track previousTrack; int anInt; Since these are not objects, I do not have to have them like int* anInt right? And if setting non-object values like ints, boolean, etc, I do not have to release the old value right (assuming non-GC environment)? The struct contains objects: typedef struct track { NSString* theId; NSString* title; } *track; Am I doing that correctly? Lastly, I access the struct like this: [currentTrack.title ...]; currentTrack.theId = @"asdf"; //LINE 1 I'm also manually managing the memory (from a setter) for the struct like this: [currentTrack.title autorelease]; currentTrack.title = [newTitle retain]; If I'm understanding the garbage collection correctly, I should be able to ditch that and just set it like LINE 1 (above)? Also with garbage collection, I don't need a dealloc method right? If I use garbage collection does this mean it only runs on OS 10.5+? And any other thing I should know before I switch to garbage collected code? Sorry there are so many questions. Very new to objective-c and desktop programming. Thanks

• My jQuery and PHP give different results on the same thing?

However my php validation says the strlen() is longer than my js is essentially saying. So for example if i type a solid string and it says 0 or 3 chars left till 255. I then click save and the php gives me the length as being 261. Any ideas? Is it to do with special characters, bit sizes that js reads differently or misses out? Or is it to do with something else? • Setting White balance and Exposure mode for iphone camera + enum default

  I am using the back camera of an iphone4 and doing the standard and lengthy process of creating an AVCaptureSession and adding to it an AVCaptureDevice. Before attaching the AvCaptureDeviceInput of that camera to the session, I am testing my understanding of white balance and exposure, so I am trying this: [self.theCaptureDevice lockForConfiguration:nil]; [self.theCaptureDevice setWhiteBalanceMode:AVCaptureWhiteBalanceModeLocked]; [self.theCaptureDevice setExposureMode:AVCaptureExposureModeContinuousAutoExposure]; [self.theCaptureDevice unlockForConfiguration]; 1- Given that the various options for white balance mode are in an enum, I would have thought that the default is always zero since the enum Typedef variable was never assigned a value. I am finding out, if I breakpoint and po the values in the debugger, that the default white balance mode is actually set to 2. Unfortunately, the header files of AVCaptureDevice does not say what the default are for the different camera setting. 2- This might sound silly, but can I assume that once I stop the app, that all settings for whitebalance, exposure mode, will go back to their default. So that if I start another app right after, the camera device is not somehow stuck on those "hardware settings".

  I am trying to build one procedure to take a large amount of data and create 5 range buckets to display the data. the buckets ranges will have to be set according to the results. I have played around with some of the following approaches without quite nailing it... SELECT modelpropvalue, NTILE(5) OVER (ORDER BY modelpropvalue) FROM xmodelpropertyvalues - this creates a new column with either 1,2,3,4 or 5 in it ROW_NUMBER()OVER (ORDER BY modelpropvalue) between @range1 and @range2 ROW_NUMBER()OVER (ORDER BY modelpropvalue) between @range2 and @range3 or maybe i could allocate every record a row number then divide into ranges from this?

• Configuring an offscreen framebuffer fails the completeness test

  I'm trying to create an offscreen framebuffer into which I can do some OpenGL drawing, and then pull the bits out manually. I'm following the instructions here, but in step 4, status is 0 instead of GL_FRAMEBUFFER_COMPLETE_OES. If I insert a call go glGetError() after every gl call, it returns 0 (GL_NO_ERROR) every time. But, the values of variables do not change during the call. E.g., GLuint framebuffer; glGenFramebuffersOES(1, &framebuffer); glBindFramebufferOES(GL_FRAMEBUFFER_OES, framebuffer); the value of framebuffer does not get altered at all (even when I change it to some arbitrary value and re-execute). It's almost like the gl calls are not actually being made. I'm linking against OpenGLES framework, and get no compile, link, or run-time errors (or warnings). I'm at a loss as to what to do to fix this. I've tried continuing on with my drawing, but do not see the results I expect, but at this point I can't tell whether it's because of the above error, or the conversion to a UIImage.

  Okay, here is my problem: Im implementing an algorithm in Java and part of it will be following: The Question is to how to do what I will explain now in an efficient way. given: array a of length n integer array perm, which is a permutation of [1..n] now I want to shuffle the array a, using the order determined by array perm, i.e. a=[a,b,c,d], perm=[2,3,4,1] ------ shuffledA[b,c,d,a], I figured out I can do that by iterating over the array with: shuffledA[i]=a[perm[i-1]], (-1 because the permutation indexes in perm start with 1 not 0) Now I want to do some operations on shuffledA... And now I want to do the reverse the shuffle operation. This is where I am not sure how to do it. Note that a can hold an item more than once, i.e. a=[a,a,a,a] If that was not the case, I could iterate perm, and find the corresponding indexes to the values. Now I thought that using a Hashmap instead of the the perm array will help. But I am not sure if this is the best way to do.

• Determining what action an NPC will take, when it is partially random but influenced by preferences?

  I want to make characters in a game perform actions that are partially random but also influenced by preferences. For instance, if a character feels angry they have a higher chance of yelling than telling a joke. So I'm thinking about how to determine which action the character will take. Here are the ideas that have come to me. Solution #1: Iterate over every possible action. For each action do a random roll, then add the preference value to that random number. The action with the highest value is the one the character takes. Solution #2: Assign a range of numbers to an action, with more likely actions having a wider range. So, if the random roll returns anywhere from 1-5, the character will tell a joke. If it returns 6-75, they will yell. And so on. Solution #3: Group all the actions and make a branching tree. Will they take a friendly action or a hostile action? The random roll (with preference values added) says hostile. Will they make a physical attack or verbal? The random roll says verbal. Keep going down the line until you reach the action. Solution #1 is the simplest, but hardly efficient. I think Solution #3 is a little more complicated, but isn't it more efficient? Does anyone have any more insight into this particular problem? Is #3 the best solution? Is there a better solution?

• Altering an embedded truetype font so it will be useable by Windows GDI

  I am trying to render PDF content to a GDI device context (a 24bit bitmap to be exact). Parsing the PDF stream into PDF objects and rendering the PDF commands from the content dictionary works well, inclduing font rendering. Embedded fonts are decompressed from their FontFile streams and "loaded" using AddFontMemResourceEx. Now some embedded fonts remove some TrueType tables that are needed by GDI, like the NAME table. Because of this, I tried to modify the font by parsing the TrueType subset font into it's tables and modify those tables that have data missing / missing tables are regenerated with as correct information as possible. I use the Microsoft Font Validator tool to see how "correct" the generated font is. I still get a few errors, like for the maxp table the max values are usually too large (it is a subset) or The xAvgCharWidth field does not equal the calculated value of the OS/2 table is not correct but this does not stop other embedded fonts to be useable.The fonts embedded using PDFCreator are the ones that are problematic. Question: - How can I determine what I need to change to the font file in order for GDI to be able to use it? - Are there any other font validation tools that might give me insight into what is still wrong with the fontfile? If needed: I can make an original fontfile and an altered fontfile available for download somewhere.

  I am using a jQuery AJAX request to a page called like.php that connects to my database and inserts a row. It seems to just return an empty string, and in my database under the like_message column all I see is blank entries. If I remove mysql_real_escape_string() though, it works fine. However, there is something that I would like to change in the colors. A slightly different idea (where gradient fill isn't an issue) was to use one (or 2 back-to-back) bell curve(s) filled with (solid) color, instead of a rectangle. See for example the shape that corresponds to the letter F here. In that case the bell-curve(s) should (ideally) be drawn using something like plot(x, dnorm(x, mean = my.mean, sd = std.error.of.the.mean)) I have no idea though, of a way to draw rotated (and filled with color) bell curves. Of course, all of the above may be freely judged as midnight springtime dreams :-)

• How to bind data from a view of type List<List<MyViewModelClass>>?

  I have a strong type view of type List<List<MyViewModelClass>> The outer list will always have two lists of List<MyViewModelClass>. For each of the two outer lists I want to display a group of checkboxes. Each set can have an arbitrary number of choices. My view model class looks similar to this: public class MyViewModelClass { public Area Area { get; set; } public bool IsGeneric { get; set; } public string Code { get; set; } public bool IsChecked { get; set; } } So the final view will look something like: Please select those that apply: First set of choices: x Option 1 x Option 2 x Option 3 etc. Second set of choices: x Second Option 1 x Second Option 2 x Second Option 3 x Second Option 4 etc. Checkboxes should display MyViewModelClass.Area.Name, and their value should be related to MyViewModelClass.Area.Id. Checked state is of course related to MyViewModel.IsChecked. Question I wonder how should I use Html.CheckBox() or Html.CheckBoxFor() helper to display my checkboxes? I have to get these values back to the server on a postback of course. I know everything about state A (widthA, heightA, topA, leftA, scrollXA, scrollYA) and state B (widthB, heightB, topB, leftB, scrollXB, scrollYB). • SQL Server INSERT ... SELECT Statement won't parse

  I am getting the following error message with SQL Server 2005 Msg 120, Level 15, State 1, Procedure usp_AttributeActivitiesForDateRange, Line 18 The select list for the INSERT statement contains fewer items than the insert list. The number of SELECT values must match the number of INSERT columns. I have copy and pasted the select list and insert list into excel and verified there are the same number of items in each list. Both tables an additional primary key field with is not listed in either the insert statement or select list. I am not sure if that is relevant, but suspicious it may be. • F# and statically checked union cases

  Soon me and my brother-in-arms Joel will release version 0.9 of Wing Beats. It's an internal DSL written in F#. With it you can generate XHTML. One of the sources of inspiration have been the XHTML.M module of the Ocsigen framework. I'm not used to the OCaml syntax, but I do understand XHTML.M somehow statically check if attributes and children of an element are of valid types. We have not been able to statically check the same thing in F#, and now I wonder if someone have any idea of how to do it? My first naive approach was to represent each element type in XHTML as a union case. But unfortunately you cannot statically restrict which cases are valid as parameter values, as in XHTML.M. Then I tried to use interfaces (each element type implements an interface for each valid parent) and type constraints, but I didn't manage to make it work without the use of explicit casting in a way that made the solution cumbersome to use. And it didn't feel like an elegant solution anyway. Today I've been looking at Code Contracts, but it seems to be incompatible with F# Interactive. When I hit alt + enter it freezes. Just to make my question clearer. Here is a super simple artificial example of the same problem: type Letter = | Vowel of string | Consonant of string let writeVowel = function | Vowel str -> sprintf "%s is a vowel" str I want writeVowel to only accept Vowels statically, and not as above, check it at runtime. How can we accomplish this? Does anyone have any idea? There must be a clever way of doing it. If not with union cases, maybe with interfaces? I've struggled with this, but am trapped in the box and can't think outside of it.
