    In the ongoing work being done on Maven documentation support for NetBeans Platform developers, the tutorial describing how to use the Maven command line to set up and develop applications on the NetBeans Platform has ben updated: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-maven-commandline.html An interesting next step after following the tutorial above is to... open the result into the free community edition of IntelliJ IDEA: It's not hard to register the JDK and Maven in IntelliJ IDEA and to then run your application directly from there. The point is that there's no requirement to use NetBeans IDE if you want to create applications on top of its framework.

  • Quantal upgrade broke my gnome-shell!

    Just updated to quantal 12.10, and Unity works fine, but and I can't get gnome-shell to work :( Some symptoms: when using gdm as the default, it decided to display everything in chinese. When attempting to log in, it accepts the password, and then seems to crash when trying to load my desktop, and seems to restart gdm and send me back to the login screen when switching to lightdm as the window manager, it gets a little further (and in english), bringing up a desktop, but a broken one -- the propeller key doesn't bring up a menu, there's no menubar or notifactions area. i can do a few things, like bring up a terminal with ctrl+alt+t, and launch eg firefox from there, but not much else. I have tried uninstalling gnome-shell, deleting /etc/gdm, and reinstalling Any other suggestions? Which log files to look at for example?

    The three-step JCP evolution consists of the following JSRs: • JSR 348, JCP transparency • JSR 355, Merging the two existing Executive Committees • JSR 358, complex issues moved postponed from JSR 348 The JSR 348 is already completed and JSR 355 is scheduled to be complete later this year. JSR 358 was recently filed and plans to revise several items such as modify the JSPA, Process Document, and a large number of complex issues. Because of the nature and scope of work, the Expert Group consists of representatives from all companies in the Executive Committee. Following the process set by JSR 348, all the work is done in open at jsr358.java.net. All the email discussions are here and JIRA here. Read Patrick Curran's blog for more details as well. The JSR review ballot ends on Jul 9th however the work has already happening for the past few months. Now is your chance to contribute and make JCP more effective!

  • Reduced Tree View in NetBeans IDE 7.2

    Right-click within the Projects window in NetBeans IDE 7.2 and from the "View Java Packages As" menu, you can now choose "Reduced Tree".I never really understood the difference between "Reduced Tree" and the already existing "Tree". But it makes sense when you see it. Here's Reduced Tree view: And here's Tree view, where you can see that the "actions" and "nodes" packages above each have their own top level package nodes, which takes up more space than the above: What's cool is that your selected package view is persisted across restarts of the IDE. To be complete, here's the List view, which is the third option you have in the "View Java Packages As" menu: Seems to me like the new Reduced Tree view combines the best of the Tree view with the best of the List view!   • Server 13.10 Install Hangs

    I'm trying to install Server 13.10 on some old hardware for testing (HP/Compaq dc5850, with Athlon X2 2.3 GHz dual core, 4GB RAM). The third screen is "Select Language" and the machine appears to hang. Ath e selection screen, the keyboard and mouse does not work. I integrity checked the CD and it checked out OK. I also performed a second ISO download and it cross checked with my initial download: $ md5 Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso MD5 (Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e MD5 (Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e I was able to install Server 12.04 on the same machine. The problem with 12.04 is the OpenStack packages are too old, and I wanted to try something with fresher packages. My problem appears similar to I cannot install Ubuntu Server 12.10. The Installer hangs at the language selection, but my ISOs appear to be good and the disc appears to be good. Any ideas?

  • Helping to Reduce Page Compression Failures Rate

    When InnoDB compresses a page it needs the result to fit into its predetermined compressed page size (specified with KEY_BLOCK_SIZE). When the result does not fit we call that a compression failure. In this case InnoDB needs to split up the page and try to compress again. That said, compression failures are bad for performance and should be minimized.Whether the result of the compression will fit largely depends on the data being compressed and some tables and/or indexes may contain more compressible data than others. And so it would be nice if the compression failure rate, along with other compression stats, could be monitored on a per table or even on a per index basis, wouldn't it?This is where the new INFORMATION_SCHEMA table in MySQL 5.6 kicks in. INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_CMP_PER_INDEX provides exactly this helpful information. It contains the following fields: +-----------------+--------------+------+ | Field | Type | Null | +-----------------+--------------+------+ | database_name | varchar(192) | NO | | table_name | varchar(192) | NO | | index_name | varchar(192) | NO | | compress_ops | int(11) | NO | | compress_ops_ok | int(11) | NO | | compress_time | int(11) | NO | | uncompress_ops | int(11) | NO | | uncompress_time | int(11) | NO | +-----------------+--------------+------+ similarly to INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_CMP, but this time the data is grouped by "database_name,table_name,index_name" instead of by "page_size".So a query like SELECT database_name, table_name, index_name, compress_ops - compress_ops_ok AS failures FROM information_schema.innodb_cmp_per_index ORDER BY failures DESC; would reveal the most problematic tables and indexes that have the highest compression failure rate.From there on the way to improving performance would be to try to increase the compressed page size or change the structure of the table/indexes or the data being stored and see if it will have a positive impact on performance.

    The other day, I wrote about how to download and install Java ME SDK plugin for NetBeans. If you are using NetBeans 7.2.1 or later, you don't have to go through the whole process at all. It's now a matter of a few clicks, because all the plugins are now all in NetBeans update server. Here is a new way to install and integrate Java ME SDK plugins for NetBeans. 1. On NetBeans, go to "Tools"- "Plugins". 2. Click on "Available Plugins" tab. Locate "Java ME SDK Tools". 3. Check the tools you want to install, and click "Install" button at the bottom left corner. 4. NetBeans will restart, and that's it! Remember that different Java ME SDK requires different version of Plugins. If you are using Java ME SDK 3.0.5 or earlier, you must install Java ME SDK Tool version 2.0 (works with NetBeans 7.1.2 or earlier) If you are using Java ME SDK 3.2 or later, you must install Java ME SDK Tool version 3.0 (works with NetBeans 7.2 or later)

  • Servlet 3.1 Early Draft Now Available

    JSR 340 has released an Early Draft of the Servlet 3.1 specification. Other than the usual clarifications and javadoc updates, ProtocolHandler and WebConnection are new classes that encapsulates the protocol upgrade processing. This will typically be used for upgrading an HTTP connection to a WebSocket. Section 2.3.3.5 in the specification provide more details on it. Section 3.7 explain non-blocking request processing by the Web container. ReadListener and WriteListener are new interfaces that represents a call-back mechanism to read and write data without blocking. As with other Java EE 7 specifications, progress can be tracked at servlet-spec.java.net. The Expert Group discussions are archived and you can participate by sending an email to [email protected].

Being integrated into the NetBeans Platform means that a host of standard features are now available to the GeoTools features, e.g., print functionality, which only requires a runtime dependency on the NetBeans Print API, together with the "print.printable" client property put into constructor of the TopComponent: By the way, I've spent some time now and again being confused about the difference between GeoTools and GeoToolkit. Here's an interesting starting point to beginning to understand the differences and history between them. Soon I'd like to have an example similar for the above for GeoToolkit.

  • Tell the CDI 2 Expert Group What You Think!

    Since it's introduction in Java EE 6, CDI has become a key API for the platform. CDI 1.1 was a relatively minor release included in Java EE 7 as was CDI 1.2 (to be included in GlassFish 4.0.1). We have much higher expectations from CDI 2 (projected to be included in Java EE 8) under the new leadership of Antoine Sabot-Durand. Much like we conducted the Java EE 8 survey to solidify future direction for the platform, CDI 2 is now undergoing the same effort. Towards this goal the CDI 2 leadership is now soliciting feedback on some very specific items via an open survey. Topics include the likes of Java SE bootstrap, asynchronous processing, modularity, EJB-style @Startup and @Asynchronous in CDI, configuration and CDI Lite. You can of course also provide free-form input on anything that's not on the survey. Take the survey now on the CDI specification site and help shape the future of CDI 2 and Java EE 8!

  • Gesture Based NetBeans Tip Infrastructure

    All/most/many gestures you make in NetBeans IDE are recorded in an XML file in your user directory, "var/log/uigestures", which is what makes the Key Promoter I outlined yesterday possible. The idea behind it is for analysis to be made possible, when you periodically pass the gestures data back to the NetBeans team. See http://statistics.netbeans.org for details. Since the gestures in the 'uigestures' file are identifiable by distinct loggers and other parameters, there's no end to the interesting things that one is able to do with it. While the NetBeans team can see which gestures are done most frequently, e.g., which kinds of projects are created most often, thus helping in prioritizing new features and bugs, etc, you as the user can, depending on who and how the initiative is taken, directly benefit from your collected data, too. Tim Boudreau, in a recent article, mentioned the usefulness of hippie completion. So, imagine that whenever you use code completion, a tip were to appear reminding you about hippie completion. And then you'd be able to choose whether you'd like to see the tip again or not, etc, i.e., customize the frequency of tips and the types of tips you'd like to be shown. And then, it could be taken a step further. The tip plugin could be set up in such a way that anyone would be able to register new tips per gesture. For example, maybe you have something very interesting to share about code completion in NetBeans. So, you'd create your own plugin in which there'd be an HTML file containing the text you'd like to have displayed whenever you (or your team members, or your students, maybe?) use code completion. Then you'd register that HTML file in plugin's layer file, in a subfolder dedicated to the specific gesture that you're interested in commenting on. The same is true, not just for NetBeans IDE, but for anyone creating their applications on top of the NetBeans Platform, of course.

At that time i heard a lot of comments between "Oh, we will install it on new systems on day 1" to "oh ... not that fast ... we will wait ... we are not that fast ... we will do it in a year".   • Showing an Action on a TopComponent Node

    Let's say you want to extend the tools in NetBeans IDE, specifically for TopComponents. When the user right-clicks in the Projects window (or Files window or Favorites window) on a Java class that extends TopComponent, a menu item should be available for branding the TopComponent. What "branding" entails is, at this stage, a secondary question. The primary question, from an implementation point of view, is "how do I create an action that is only shown when the user right-clicks on a TopComponent?"   • JPA 2.1 Schema Generation (TOTD #187)

    This blog explained some of the key features of JPA 2.1 earlier. Since then Schema Generation has been added to JPA 2.1. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will provide more details about this new feature in JPA 2.1. Schema Generation refers to generation of database artifacts like tables, indexes, and constraints in a database schema. It may or may not involve generation of a proper database schema depending upon the credentials and authorization of the user. This helps in prototyping of your application where the required artifacts are generated either prior to application deployment or as part of EntityManagerFactory creation. This is also useful in environments that require provisioning database on demand, e.g. in a cloud. This feature will allow your JPA domain object model to be directly generated in a database. The generated schema may need to be tuned for actual production environment. This usecase is supported by allowing the schema generation to occur into DDL scripts which can then be further tuned by a DBA. The following set of properties in persistence.xml or specified during EntityManagerFactory creation controls the behaviour of schema generation. Property Name Purpose Values javax.persistence.schema-generation-action Controls action to be taken by persistence provider "none", "create", "drop-and-create", "drop" javax.persistence.schema-generation-target Controls whehter schema to be created in database, whether DDL scripts are to be created, or both "database", "scripts", "database-and-scripts" javax.persistence.ddl-create-script-target, javax.persistence.ddl-drop-script-target Controls target locations for writing of scripts. Writers are pre-configured for the persistence provider. Need to be specified only if scripts are to be generated. java.io.Writer (e.g. MyWriter.class) or URL strings javax.persistence.ddl-create-script-source, javax.persistence.ddl-drop-script-source Specifies locations from which DDL scripts are to be read. Values are those obtained from JDBC DatabaseMetaData. javax.persistence.create-database-schemas Whether Persistence Provider need to create schema in addition to creating database objects such as tables, sequences, constraints, etc. "true", "false" Section 11.2 in the JPA 2.1 specification defines the annotations used for schema generation process. For example, @Table, @Column, @CollectionTable, @JoinTable, @JoinColumn, are used to define the generated schema. Several layers of defaulting may be involved. For example, the table name is defaulted from entity name and entity name (which can be specified explicitly as well) is defaulted from the class name. However annotations may be used to override or customize the values. The following entity class: @Entity public class Employee {    @Id private int id;    private String name;     . . .     @ManyToOne     private Department dept; } is generated in the database with the following attributes: Maps to EMPLOYEE table in default schema "id" field is mapped to ID column as primary key "name" is mapped to NAME column with a default VARCHAR(255). The length of this field can be easily tuned using @Column. @ManyToOne is mapped to DEPT_ID foreign key column. Can be customized using JOIN_COLUMN. In addition to these properties, couple of new annotations are added to JPA 2.1: @Index - An index for the primary key is generated by default in a database. This new annotation will allow to define additional indexes, over a single or multiple columns, for a better performance. This is specified as part of @Table, @SecondaryTable, @CollectionTable, @JoinTable, and @TableGenerator. For example: @Table(indexes = {@Index(columnList="NAME"), @Index(columnList="DEPT_ID DESC")})@Entity public class Employee {    . . .} The generated table will have a default index on the primary key. In addition, two new indexes are defined on the NAME column (default ascending) and the foreign key that maps to the department in descending order. @ForeignKey - It is used to define foreign key constraint or to otherwise override or disable the persistence provider's default foreign key definition. Can be specified as part of JoinColumn(s), MapKeyJoinColumn(s), PrimaryKeyJoinColumn(s). For example: @Entity public class Employee {    @Id private int id;    private String name;    @ManyToOne    @JoinColumn(foreignKey=@ForeignKey(foreignKeyDefinition="FOREIGN KEY (MANAGER_ID) REFERENCES MANAGER"))    private Manager manager;     . . . } In this entity, the employee's manager is mapped by MANAGER_ID column in the MANAGER table. The value of foreignKeyDefinition would be a database specific string. A complete replay of Linda's talk at JavaOne 2012 can be seen here (click on CON4212_mp4_4212_001 in Media). These features will be available in GlassFish 4 promoted builds in the near future. JPA 2.1 will be delivered as part of Java EE 7. The different components in the Java EE 7 platform are tracked here. JPA 2.1 Expert Group has released Early Draft 2 of the specification.
