• Using rsync when files on one end are all lowercase

  I want to rsync a lot of files from a Windows box to a Linux server. The problem is, the files on Windows are all mixed case, and the files on the linux server need to be all lowercase. One solution is to have a script that rsyncs to a different directory on the server, copy the files into the main directory, and then convert them all to lowercase. I'd rather find a more elegant solution, though. I'd prefer a command line application, but I'd be willing to go with a GUI application if that's the best option.

  Is there any way how to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer running MAC OS X or Windows 8? I would like to sync data from different accounts to different folder and not to merge these accounts to one. The reason is that every SkyDrive has it's storage limits and I'm using every account for different work data. The result should be the following: I have a number of SkyDrive accounts every for different work, let's say: S1 S2 S3 I would like to sync exactly the same number of folders on computer using different accounts to sync them: SkyDriveS1Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S1 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS2Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S2 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS3Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S3 SkyDrive) Is it possible somehow?   Google Chrome stopped working for me today. When I launch Chrome, I see the following error: Windows - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application. It fails to load the New Tab Page. After a moment, I see the following error: Google Chrome The following page(s) have become unresponsive. You can wait for them to become responsive or kill them. My operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista. I've tried: uninstalled Chrome rebooted reinstalled Chrome rebooted That didn't fix it. What now? Any ideas?

• Mandatory Profiles on a Server 2003 TS Box

  I have a Windows Server 2003 box which will be acting as a terminal server. It will actually be running Citrix, but I don't believe that to be relevant here. There has been a request for every user to use a single mandatory profile. I've used mandatory profiles before, but there have been generally different profiles for different users so I've always used the "Terminal Services Profile" tab to good effect. What I'd like this time is a single setting, such as a Group Policy or similar that simply forces every non-domain admin user logging on to the box into using the mandatory profile. We'll be using Folder Redirection to take care of everything else. I'm aware of the following GPO: Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components/Terminal Services Set path for TS Roaming Profiles But, as that's a computer policy, will it not apply to all users including administrators? If so, is it possible to exclude admins somehow?

• For virtual machines, when SMP is available on the host, should guest also have SMP setup?

  I'm trying to find out the best "bang for my buck" so to speak in regards to virtual machines, and SMP. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo, which of course has two cores and the VT extensions, and I'm running Ubuntu Linux (host) on it with VirtualBox, which has Windows Vista (guest). Currently I've got the guest machine setup for two processors to give Windows a chance to manage its own parallelism, but I'm not certain that it's any faster. I've tried it with just one processor, but it's hard to tell if it's any better. Any thoughts? Should the guest have two processors setup?

• File History - Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration

  When trying to run the File History tool in Windows 8 it runs for about 2 seconds then stops. No files are backed up to the selected drive. In the event viewer the only error that appears is: Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration C:\Users\win8User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config I've tried deleting both the configuration files and the FileHistory directory on the target drive. Setting up File History again results in the same error. Is there a better way to track down what is causing the failure? Or somehow get the File History tool to create a more verbose log file that shows what is causing the problem?

• Getting GTalk and Alt-Tab to play nice

  I'm running GTalk on Windows 7, and it refuses to work properly with Alt-Tab. Let's say I've got 2 message windows open (msg1 and msg2) and the contact list, as well as Firefox. Alt-tab from Firefox to msg1 works, but now the contact list is the most recent thing in the alt-tab list (not Firefox as expected). Then there's the problem that I can't use alt-tab to select a specific message window, and when switching back to msg2 (showing msg2 in the alt-tab window) it might switch back and have focus on msg1. I found this thread complaining about the same problem, but it's over a year old, and I'm hoping some progress has been made.

I want to connect my work computer from my home laptop, but whenever I try to do it gives me an error message saying: Remote desktop can't connect to the computer for one of the following reasons 1.Remote access to the server is not enabled. 2.The remote computer is turn off. 3.The remote computer is not available in the network. • Microsoft IME + Japanese: Force Hiragana input by default?

  I am using Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7. On both machines, I cannot make Hiragana the default input method. Is there a way to do this? In the IME tool bar, there is the option to set the "Input Mode." This is always defaulted to "Direct Input." I would like to default to Hirgana or Katakana. I have found the setting dialog for this, by right clicking on the IME toolbar - settings - Japanese IME Standard - Properties - Default Input Mode. This setting seems to have no effect, no matter the combination of selections in the dialogs. Is there a way to reliably set the default Input Mode?

• VSS error 12293 after system disk clone (Win2003)

  Hi! After cloning a windows 2003 installation from a single drive onto two mirrored drives using Acronis Disk Director, VSS no longer works, filing events 12293 and 7001 when trying to use backup tools, and additionally giving error 0x8004230f when accessing the Shadow copy tab of disk properties. I've google-researched this quite throughly, and found a suggested fix[1]: replacing the MBR signature of the disk. This would cause windows to invalidate old shadow copy information, which supposedly would make it all work again. However, I am a bit nervous over this... Is there a possiblity of messing this up somehow, because of the mbr originating from a single disk install, and now residing on a raid mirror? Has anyone here had this problem and solved it?   I have created a Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file) on Windows XP that contains a lot of animation, using PowerPoint's Custom Animation tools. I would like to share this presentation -- animations and all -- with a colleague who has a Mac computer and does not have PowerPoint or Keynote. Is it possible to make a "movie" from my .ppt file that contains a lot of animation? I recall that another colleague once made me a QuickTime "movie" from a PowerPoint file, I think (although I do not remember whether he made it using Windows or Mac). On this "movie," clicking advanced the animation/slide, just as clicking would do in an actual PowerPoint presentation. In that sense, it was not really strictly a movie, since I could interact with it by clicking. Do you know how to make such an interactive "movie" from a PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file)?   I have an Old Dell Optiplex 755 SFF with an Intel Core 2 Processor (windows 7). Now This can hold a PCI-E x16 port. Now I got an ATI Radeon HD 5450 low profile. I plugged and played and it fits without a hitch, the software installed too! , now for the graphics well... It doesn't really work at all as it seems to freeze at the moment that it loads on the windows logo. It loads into safe mode so I'm not really sure what the problem is. Any ideas, I read the dell forums and they should be somewhat compatible... with the specs so I'm at a loss here. and I am a novice here. Ideas? Edit I have tried to reset the cmos,no luck there. I have tried to move the ram as well. nothing big happened.

  Hi, I have a MOSS web site configured with Windows Integrated Authentication. I added a couple of local users in the server, added them to Sharepoint groups, and I can log into my site (as long as the local user is part of the administrators group... odd). If I add a domain user to the Owners group, I can't access the site with it. Anybody knows what must be done to open access to domain users in a site configured with Windows Authentication or Basic Authentication? Thanks in advance

• Utility to unmap a network drive when the screen saver starts

  I'm looking for a way to unmap network drives when the screen saver turns on. I have a few users that share an external, encrypted drive (Samba share, not windows) and they have a requirement to disconnect the drive mapping when the local machine is idle. I'd also like it to warn them if there are open files on the mapped drive, if possible. There is also a requirement to force the password to be reentered before mapping when the machine comes back from idle. Is there a Windows setting or utility out there in the wild that meets these requirements?

• Log internet requests made by vpn client

  How can I log the requests that people make to the internet when they are connected to my VPN? If one of them does something illegal, I need to be able to prove that it was not me, but a VPN client. This really is a just in case type thing. So, I want to be able to see the details (server, port, domain name, and time connected) in a file somewhere. Does windows offer this with its PPTP VPN service, or is there 3rd party software to do this (Free is better)? EDIT I have setup accounting, but that does not seem to tell me what I am looking for. Could someone comment on what accounting does? EDIT 2 Maybe I should heve been clearer. My system is running windows server 2008 r2 and using the stock VPN software (PPTP)

• Cannot open the device or file specified for office files

  Recently I've noticed on couple of computers that when users try to open Office files or links (to server path) to office files they get this error "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file", but the files itself open up without problems. This happened on 4 Windows XP computers already with Office 2003 installed. One one computer it was XLSX file being opened and every time user executed it, it opened up, but the error pops out. On the other hand when I open it directly from Office it works fine, without error. On another 3 computers it was after user pressed on the link to Access DB and it error out, but Access began MSI configuration (since it was first time user logged in to his computer) and in the end it opened up properly. After closing access and doing it again problem disappeared. Some faulty patch ? Eset Smart Security 4 is installed.

• Raid HDD Boot up

  My server is Power Edge 1950 running server 2008 32Bit, using 3 Physical SAS HDD as a Virtual 2 Disk configured for RAID5, with partition of C drive as OS and D drive as Data. Planning to format and install Server 2008 R2 64Bit so I insert a New Physical disk and configured as RAID5 and clone the C drive and D drive to the new hard disk. Now I need to test that the new hard disk is able to boot windows and work as expected. How do I test, I am not able to boot the windows by choosing the new harddisk, the bios show only the existing HDD, not the new one. Also, if I remove the old three hard disk, and leave the new harddisk and then am I able to boot the device, if I do this does my existing RAID5 configuration and data on the hard disk still remain.

• How can I repair the boot loader on my laptop?

  I had removed my HD from a Dell laptop and accessed it with an external HD port on another computer. Though after returning it to the Dell laptop, it will no longer boot. The PC came pre-installed with Windows 7 and I do not have an installation disk. None of the contents of the original install have been removed or modified. If I use another laptop running Windows 7 to create a repair/recovery disk, would I be able to use it on my Dell to repair the boot sector? How can I repair the bootmgr? It's frustrating knowing there's a perfectly good operating system there that wont boot. Thanks for your time!

  I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• Client/server application RPC connection gets disconnected very frequently

  I have a client/server application that uses RPC for the client to communicate with the server. Fairly regularly, I get an event in the Application log that the RPC connection was disconnected: Client callback failed ((0x80010108) ) I have the Windows Firewall disabled on both machines. I've even run the client on a second computer with a clean Windows XP install without any group policies. This has been going on for a long time and no one has been able to figure out why it's happening. The same client/server app works fine at other client locations. Any thoughts?

• How can I prevent my domain controller doing forward lookups for remote users?

  I have a Windows Server 2003 server in the office. I VPN into the LAN remotely. My VPN has a virtual NIC with the Windows Server as the primary DNS since it is a domain controller. When connected to the VPN and I do an nslookup or simply browse the web the DNS from the VPN provides the DNS answers. I believe this is because it has DNS forwarders, so queries it can't answer are forwarded and then it relays the answer. This is the desired behavior for workstations in the office (they should query their domain controller first); however for remote VPN users this is not desirable. I do not want my remote office's server to answer DNS queries it is not the authority of (which happens to be 192.168.x.x). Is there any way I can configure this?
