  The docs state: From WebRequest.Create Method The .NET Framework includes support for the http://, https://, and file:// URI schemes. Custom WebRequest descendants to handle other requests are registered with the RegisterPrefix method. However I've also been using this class to get files via ftp (not listed in the docs). Is there a definitive list of supported protocols documented anywhere? UPDATE: To clarify. Yes additional protocols can be plugged-in, but what is the standard/baseline set of protocols supported in the class framework assuming I haven't registered any others. e.g. sftp, tftp?

• Firefox HTML5 video playback inconsistancy

  Hey all, I've got an HTML5 video on a page. When tested locally, Chrome, Safari, and Opera work beautifully. Firefox plays it, but doesn't loop as efficiently as the others. The real problem is when it's tested off a server. Firefox doesn't play the video, but recognizes there is one there. I was wondering if all that open ended three-different-ways syntax can be swung in Firefox's favor. Thanks!   I'm tasked with getting a development environment set up for a new program at work. The lead has chosen Eclipse as the IDE for its OSGi support and Maven as the build utility. I've struggled through getting Maven integrated with Eclipse and I'm grudgingly declaring success and moving forward. My question: is there any sort of guide to getting started with Maven? I've found boatloads of documentation, most all of it very, very detailed and simultaneously unhelpful. I downloaded a 300+ page book that goes into excruciating detail about POMs, but doesn't tell you how to initialize a project from existing source. Hopefully, this question will result in a pointer to something I missed or a collection of links for those who follow me.

  Anyone know of a good book on Game Interface Design (not game play mechanics; the actual UI). I'm particular interested in theories of cognition, and how game interfaces are designed to allow the enduser efficient communication with the game (whether it in FPS, RTS, or so on). In a modern game, the amount of information conveyed to the user, the amount of choices the user can make; and the support for the user to make said decisions is simply astounding (think UIs for Starcraft II / WoW). Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated.

  My company is planning to implement a solution in multiple applications that will help to validate mailing addresses at the point of data entry. We're using UPS's Extended Address Validation (XAV) web service API to validate the addresses. Our current plan is to build a .NET web service that can be used to communicate between our applications and the UPS API. We have applications in VB6, classic ASP, and .NET 2.0, so we'd like to implement a solution that can be easily consumed by each of these programming environments. What are our (Microsoft) options for designing a web service that can be consumed by multiple clients? In particular, is there a way to design a single web service that can respond with JSON (in case we want to validate our web page using javascript) in addition to XML? I'm new to designing web services and want to make sure we consider all of our options. I've heard terms like asmx, WCF, OData, etc., but I don't know which frameworks will support what we're trying to do and where to start.

• Can I use WCF NET.TCP Protocol from Silverlight 4 for a public website ?

  Does anyone know if the new NET.TCP feature of Silverlight 4 can be used for public websites ? From what I know, in the Silverlight 4 Beta they announced that WCF NET.TCP can only be used for intranet applications. The reason I am asking this is because I want to recode my Silverlight multiplayer chess game (build with SL 3 Sockets support) based on the new SL 4 WCF TCP communication protocol. My Socket implementation is build from scratch and have big issues with thread safe and few unsolvable bugs from my side. I am sure that SL 4 team did a great job and they simplified all hard part for me, letting us, developers, concentrate more on the game code instead on underlying communication layers.

• How can I plot a time series graph with Perl?

  I have some data from a database (SQLite), mapping a value (an integer) to a date. A date is a string with this format: YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm. The dates are not uniformly distributed. I want do draw a line graph with the dates on X and the values on Y. What is the easiest way to do this with Perl? I tried DBIx::Chart but I could not make it recognize my dates. I also tried GD::Graph, but as the documentation says: GD::Graph does not support numerical x axis the way it should. Data for X axes should be equally spaced

• Integrating Hudson with MS Test?

  Is it possible to integrate Hudson with MS Test? I am setting up a smaller CI server on my development machine with Hudson right now, just so that I can have some statistics (ie. FxCop and compiler warnings). Of course, it would also be nice if it could just run my unit tests and present their output. Up to now, I have added the following batch task to Hudson, which makes it run the tests properly. "%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\MSTest.exe" /runconfig:LocalTestRun.testrunconfig /testcontainer:Tests\bin\Debug\Tests.dll However, as far as I know, Hudson does not support analysis of MS Test results, yet. Does anyone know whether the TRX files generated by MSTest.exe can be transformed to the JUnit or NUnit result format (because those are supported by Hudson), or whether there is any other way to integrate MS Test unit tests with Hudson?

  Hello, We have created a beautifully designed .NET WPF desktop application. We are installing the application with InnoSetup , and if .NET 3.5 is not present, it automatically installs it. However, the package to download .NET 3.5 is huge and we found out that about 30% of users do not finish instalation due to this. The obvious solution is to recode everything into .NET 1.1 with Windows Forms but its a major development which would take few weeks. Also, we would then face dilemma if to support both versions (and use innosetup to choose the right one) or just ditch WPF all together. Is there any easy way how to convert WPF to Windows Forms? Or do we have any alternative options to consider? Thank you!

  This is my scenario I have an view(page) with list of items, a user could select single or multiple items from this page and click on a "Add to Group" button. Then a modal dialog(JQuery dialog) will be shown, from that he could select group, then press the add button. Which causes the items selected in the parent page is added to that particular group. So, which is the best way to pass the selected items to the modal pop-up? Though the query string ? - what happens if the no:of items selected is large, will the url support that much characters Keep the list in the parent page in a javascript variable and return the selected group from the modal pop-up? • Where is the windows app installed + .NET + VS2005

  I deployed a windows application in the following website http://StagingServer/MyProgs/MPP/ on my intranet site, using the Publish Wizard of VS 2005... I accepted all defaults (including Offline support). My users were also able to install the same from the path specified. But when I try to find out the exact location of the EXE in the client, it is not pointing anywhere. I also tried a file search but in vain. Initially I thought the application is running from the server itself, but we were able to start the app, even when the server is down (ofcourse it takes more time to search for updates initially). Ps : The app is showing even in control panel... Raja

• Best way to validate a WinCE OS image (.bin) file?

  We have a Windows CE 6.0 based product that allows for firmware upgrades through a web interface. I want to perform a sanity check on the new firmware image to be sure that it is valid. How should I perform the validation? I see in the BIOSLOADER code, there is support code for decoding a BIN file. I suppose I could massage that to perform the validation. Is there a better way? • Opinions sought on the best way to organise classes in PHP

  I am pretty much set on using the Java package naming convention of com.website.app.whatever but am unsure about the best way of doing this in PHP. Option 1: Create a directory structure com/ mysite/ myapp/ encryption/ PublicKeyGenerator.class.php Cipher.class.php Xml/ XmlHelper.class.php XmlResponse.class.php Now this is how Java does it, it uses the folders to organize the heirarchy. This is however a little clumsy in PHP because there is no native support for it and when you move things around you break all includes. Option 2 Name classes using a periods for the package, therefore sames are just like in Java but can all be in the same directory making __autoload a breeze. classes/ com.mysite.myapp.encription.PublicKeyGenerator.class.php com.mysite.myapp.encription.Cipher.class.php com.mysite.myapp.xml.XmlHelper.class.php com.mysite.myapp.xml.XmlResponse.class.php The only real disadvantage here is that all the classes are in a single folder which might be confusing for large projects. Opinions sought, which is the best or are there other even better options?

• What platforms have something other than 8-bit char?

  Every now and then, someone on SO points out that char (aka 'byte') isn't necessarily 8 bits. It seems that 8-bit char is almost universal. I would have thought that for mainstream platforms, it is necessary to have an 8-bit char to ensure its viability in the marketplace. Both now and historically, what platforms use a char that is not 8 bits, and why would they differ from the "normal" 8 bits? When writing code, and thinking about cross-platform support (e.g. for general-use libraries), what sort of consideration is it worth giving to platforms with non-8-bit char? In the past I've come across some Analog Devices DSPs for which char is 16 bits. DSPs are a bit of a niche architecture I suppose. (Then again, at the time hand-coded assembler easily beat what the available C compilers could do, so I didn't really get much experience with C on that platform.)

  I want to use an Enum value for the types of VaryByCustom parameters I will support, is it possible to do this? I tried setting it in the page itself <%@ OutputCache Duration="600" VaryByParam="none" VaryByCustom='<%=VaryByCustomType.IsAuthenticated.ToString(); %>' %> But this returned the entire literal string "<%=VaryByCustomType.IsAuthenticated.ToString(); %>" inside my global.asax is there any way to do this either on the page itself or from the codebehind? Or is this just something I have to accept is purely magic strings and nothing I can do to add type safety to it?

• What's a good way to write XML in C++?

  There are plenty of Libraries to parse XML, but it seems there aren't many good (?) ways to write XML in C++. Libraries I've been using so far: PugiXML: really lightweight, very straightforwarded API, but it seems to lack a way to write XML (Or I haven't found it yet) RapidXML: I don't have much experience with RapidXML; But it does look nice. TinyXML: I find it odd that the STL TinyXML needs to be explicitly "enabled" in TinyXML - I mean, if your compiler doesn't support the STL, get a better one! The import of standard product is successful but not for the product with customs options. For customs option, missing "info_buyRequest" valu in database. The technical support of magento we responded "the import process currently can't handle importing products with custom options". Magento use custom options when ordering a product with customs options on website. What features do magento use to fill in the fields "info_buyRequest" and "Product_options" when ordering? • How to network a Mac running System 7.6 with Mac OS X 10.6 or Windows Vista over Ethernet?

  The title pretty much says it all. I have a Powerbook 540c that is connected to my network via Ethernet. It has no Internet tools on it at all, and its running System 7.6. I am trying to figure out a way to get it to mount a drive on either my Windows Vista workstation or my Snow Leopard Macbook. Once I do that I can get an old browser on there and get what I need off the Internet. Thus far I have not been able to get it connected. Microsoft dropped Appletalk support in XP and despite enabling Appletalk on my Macbook, the powerbook cannot see it in the Chooser. Any ideas?

• code folding in Visual Studio for F#

  I find that I tend to write long source files in F#. Some open source projects in F# also have long source files, e.g. FPersec and F# for excel. So it would be very helpful if code folding (even very limited support) is available in VS for F#. E.g. in a module, we can fold out functions that are stable, only leave functions that are subject to change unfold. Is this feature easy to be supported, e.g. by a third party vendor?

• Is there are standard way to store a database schema outside a python app

  I am working on a small database application in Python (currently targeting 2.5 and 2.6) using sqlite3. It would be helpful to be able to provide a series of functions that could setup the database and validate that it matches the current schema. Before I reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd look around for libraries that would provide something similar. I'd love to have something akin to RoR's migrations. xml2ddl doesn't appear to be meant as a library (although it could be used that way), and more importantly doesn't support sqlite3. I'm also worried about the need to move to Python 3 one day given the lack of recent attention to xml2ddl. Are there other tools around that people are using to handle this?

• How do I get a visual debugger on Mac OS when I have no XCode project?

  I am porting a project over to OS X. I am finding GDB debugging in the console to be woefully insufficient and really need a visual debugger. My project is built using Scons and as such, it sidesteps Xcode's IDE entirely. This is acceptable until I need to fire up a visual debugger and step through my code. Aside from generating and maintaining an Xcode project (to supplement all of the other platforms I have to support already), what can I do to get a visual debugger up and running on OS X? This is for a C++ project.

Which one is more sense in Perl web dev? BTW, the directory of 'cgi-bin' created by my VPS server, Do I need contact with my VPS support to remove it or just remain it like this URL style? Maybe http://www.mydomain.com/perDev/hello.cgi is better?
