• How to allow to allow admins to edit my app's config files without UAC elevation?

  My company produces a cross-platform server application which loads its configuration from user-editable configuration files. On Windows, config file ACLs are locked down by our Setup program to allow reading by all users but restrict editing to Administrators and Local System only. Unfortunately, on Windows Server 2008, even local administrators no longer have admin privileges (because of UAC) unless they're running an elevated app. This has caused complaints from users who cannot use their favorite text editor to open and save config files changes-- they can open the files (since anyone can read) but can't save. Anyone have recommendations for what we can do (if anything) in our app's Setup to make editing easier for admins on Windows Server 2008? Related questions: if a Windows Server 2008 admin wants to edit an admins-only config file, how does he normally do it? Is he forced to use a text editor which is smart enough to auto-elevate when elevation is needed, like Windows Explorer does in response to access denied errors? Does he launch the editor from an elevated command-prompt window? Something else?

• Network Logon Issues with Group Policy and Network

  I am gravely in need of your help and assistance. We have a problem with our logon and startup to our Windows 7 Enterprise system. We have more than 3000 Windows Desktops situated in roughly 20+ buildings around campus. Almost every computer on campus has the problem that I will be describing. I have spent over one month peering over etl files from Windows Performance Analyzer (A great product) and hundreds of thousands of event logs. I come to you today humbled that I could not figure this out. The problem as simply put our logon times are extremely long. An average first time logon is roughly 2-10 minutes depending on the software installed. All computers are Windows 7, the oldest computers being 5 years old. Startup times on various computers range from good (1-2 minutes) to very bad (5-60). Our second time logons range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. We have a gigabit connection between each computer on the network. We have 5 domain controllers which also double as our DNS servers. Initial testing led us to believe that this was a software problem. So I spent a few days testing machines only to find inconsistent results from the etl files from xperfview. Each subset of computers on campus had a different subset of software issues, none seeming to interfere with logon just startup. So I started looking at our group policy and located some very interesting event ID’s. Group Policy 1129: The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. Group Policy 1055: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). NETLOGON 5719 : This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain OURDOMAIN due to the following: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. E1kexpress 27: Intel®82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection – Network link is disconnected. NetBT 4300 – The driver could not be created. WMI 10 - Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. More or less with timestamps it becomes apparent that the network maybe the issue. 1:25:57 - Group Policy is trying to discover the domain controller information 1:25:57 - The network link has been disconnected 1:25:58 - The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has successfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator. 1:25:58 - Making LDAP calls to connect and bind to active directory.   I am having a similar problem as http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1799684/ant-basedir-slashes-escape-problem except that I'm running under Maven. I'd like to generate cross-platform paths relative to Maven's built-in property ${basedir}. The problem is that under Windows, ${basedir} resolves to a path containing Windows-style slashes. Is there an easy way for me to get ${basedir} into a form that always uses Unix-style slashes even under Windows?

• Strange threads in application in Win7 WOW64

  We are observing 4-6 threads on Windows 7 x64 in the application which have 3 threads and behaves normally on any Windows (either 32 or 64 bit) prior Windows 7. Process Explorer shows the following "unknown" thread: ntdll.dll!EtwDeliverDataBlock+offset after random interval the following threads appear: ntdll.dll!TpCallbackIndependent+offset ntdll.dll!TpCallbackIndependent+offset after that application can't create thread (error code 8, hot enough space ...). It seems to me that some system DLL creates ETW threads or something. Does anyone know what these threads for and how to manage them?

• DirectX Desktop

  Hi. I'd like to make an animated desktop background for Windows 7 using DirectX. I'm using C#, SlimDX and a couple of P/Invoke imports of Windows API functions. I'm not brilliant with native Windows programming, but I've had a poke around online and I believe what I need to do is either: 1) Find the handle of the window containing the dekstop wallpaper, hook it up to a DirectX device and draw into it. 2) Make a new output window, and insert it above the desktop wallpaper but below the desktop icons. I've tried both these, but neither seems to work. If I navigate the Window heirarchy starting from the handle returned by GetDesktopWindow(), I can go Desktop - WorkerW - SHELLDLL_DefView - SysListView32. If I hook up a DirectX device to this handle, I can draw over the entire desktop, but it also covers the icons. If I create a Windows form, set its parent to SHELLDLL_DefView using SetParent() and then use SetWindowPos to play with its Z-order I can only seem to get it to go either behind the desktop wallpaper or in front of the desktop + icons. It looks as though the desktop wallpaper is background to the folder view containing the icons, and therefore what I am trying to do cannot work. The only solution then would be to not use the desktop for icons, or to find some alternative, e.g. overwriting the desktop then overlaying a transparent window containing a view of the contents of some folder. Does anyone have any idea of what I should be doing, or even whether what I want to do is possible? It seems you can draw to the desktop background using the GDI (as I believe the wxSnow program does), and I've seen something similar to what I want done by VLC Media Player under Windows XP with its DirectX wallpaper mode (interestingly, I can't seem to get this option enabled on my system).   Dear all, I am tasked with a project that requires me to retreieve a specific file from a folder where I can only get an X and Y on the screen. While in XP I managed to use the fact that windows explorer is in essence a list view, and used the WM_HITTEST message to obtain information about the file, in Windows 7, this is not the case. To solve this problem, I am using UI Automation, which is a great tool for such things, only problem is that in the case, the windows handle I am looking at belongs to the desktop, and the desktop might have several files with the same name but with different extensions (and windows is configured to "hide extensions of known file types") UI automation does not return the extension back to me. I have tried many things, but I cannot find any robust solution which would give me 100% success. Has anyone tried this? successfully? Would appreciate any pointers. Many thanks,

• Why my VPN doesn't work anymore?

  I have openvpn server running on debian lenny. There is only one client - and it is running Windows 7 64-bit. This has worked for few months without any problems. And now, let's say for the last 7 days, it doesn't work at all. I connect successfully from client to the server, but I can't access anything through VPN. I have set it up so that all internet traffic is routed through VPN, and now when I connect with the client, the client can't do anything on the net (open any webpage, ping google, anything ...). Can you help me to figure out what's wrong ? I don't know where to start. I've also tried to connect to another openvpn server (I've installed and configured openvpn on another server, and when I try to connect to it result is the same). So I think there's something wrong with client ... • Coherent access to mainframe files from Win32 application and IBM RDZ/Eclipse?

  I have a suite of tools for processing IBM COBOL source code; these tools are built as Win32 applications and talk to Windows (including network) files using traditional Windows file system calls (open, close, read, write) and work just fine, thank you. I'd like to integrate these with Eclipse; we understand how to get Eclipse to do UI for us we think. The problem is that Eclipse/RDZ users access mainframe files through some IBM magic. In How does RDZ access mainframe files I tried to understand how Eclipse accessed files on a mainframe. Apparantly Eclipse/RDZ has a secret filesystem access backdoor not available to normal mortals. At issue is how our tools, reading some Windows-accessible file (local disk file, NFS to mainframe, ...) can associate such files with the files that Eclipse can access or is using? Ideally we'd like UI-integrated versions of our tools take an Eclipse file-name string for a mainframe file, pass it to our Windows application to process, have the Windows application open/read/process the file, and return results associated with that file to the Eclipse UI. Is there a canonical file name path that would be used with mainframe NFS that would be equivalent to the name or access object the Eclipse RDZ used to access the same file? Are all operations doable internally by Eclipse, doable by the mainframe NFS [for instance, can NFS read/update an element in a partitioned data set? Can Eclipse RDZ? Does it matter?] Is the mainframe file access available to custom Java code running under Eclipse RDZ (e.g., equivalents of open/close/read/write based on filename/path/something?) If so, can somebody steer me towards documentation describing the access methods? Anybody else already solve this problem or have a good suggestion?

• What do I need to do to make a WPF Browser Application (XBAP) that requires Full Trust work on Windo

  So this is a Visual Studio 2008, .NET, WPF, XBAP, Windows 7 question, regarding .NET trust policies. At work, we have several Web Browser Applications (.XBAP files) developed with Visual Studio 2008 (so .NET 3.5) that we deployed internally. These required a .NET FullTrust policy, we found a way to make a .MSI that adjusted the policy on individual stations, everything worked great. Users love in-browser apps. This was last year and on Windows XP. This year our company started upgrading users to Windows 7, and now none of our Web Browser Applications work. The error message is "Trust Not Granted", as if the policy-changing .MSI had not been run. Other details: I can confirm that our apps work on Windows XP for Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox, and do not work on Windows 7 for Internet Explorer 8 nor Firefox. I must admit that .NET security policies mystify me. Still, I could not find any mention of this problem on the Net at large or on this site. Did anybody else encounter this problem? Any and all help welcome.

• Why does xdebug crash apache on every XAMPP install I've tried?

  I've installed the Windows XAMPP package on three separate computers, 2 running Windows Vista 32 bit ( 1 Ultimate / 1 Home Premium ) and 1 running Windows Vista 64 Home Premium. After enabling xdebug in php.ini and restarting apache, viewing the default XAMPP localhost index causes apache to crash in the same way every time, reporting 'php_xdebug.dll' as the Fault Module Name. • Detecting your application's install path in Java?

  Hi, I have made a small application in Java and I would like to make a windows installer for it using the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page). The application I made needs to save user preferences somewhere and it currently saves it in the user's home directory (e.g. c:\Users\danny or /home/users/danny). However if the windows installer installs the application to e.g. c:\Program Files\whatever\ I should probably save the preferences file there too, right? How would I detect that directory path in Java? What would be a good cross-platform approach to this without losing the benefits of a windows uninstaller for windows users e.g. start menu icons, installer option, etc? Should I just continue saving my preferences in the user's home path and clutter it up? Thanks very much,

  Hello, My program uses some external programs that i included in the Files folder. In my code im reffering to Files/external_program.exe Windows Vista & Windows 7 knows how to handle this and starts the program on the same location as my program in the Files folder. But Xp doesnt know where it is, and Windows XP will think im reffering to the C:\Files folder. So im getting an error and the app crashes. How can i fix this? so windows xp will know that i'm reffering to the Files folder on the same location as my program.

  I've always wondered the best way to automate use of a GUI in windows. When I was about 15, I wrote a little application that used some simple windows api functions to automatically click on certain locations on the screen based on a script. This could be used to automate GUI apps, but surely it's not the best way. So, my question is: What's the best way to automate use of a GUI in windows? Are there certain windows API functions that would be beneficial? If the program were to crash, how could you detect that? Thanks!

• Gacutil.exe successfully adds assembly, but assembly missing from GAC. Why?

  I'm running GacUtil.exe from within Visual Studio Command Prompt 2010 to register a dll (CatalogPromotion.dll) to the GAC. After running the utility, it says Assembly Successfully added to the cache, and running gacutil /l CatalogPromotionDll shows that the GAC contains the assembly, but I can't see the assembly when I navigate to C:\WINDOWS\assembly from Windows Explorer. Why can't I see the assembly in WINDOWS\assembly from Windows Explorer but I can see it using gacutil.exe? • How do I start using Linux for web development?

  OK, so that's maybe not the best title, but I don't know exactly what I want to do, so, please, hear me out. I've used Windows pretty much all my life although I played with Linux on several occasions. At work everyone does web development with php on Windows using the same IDE and stuff. I would like to experience the powerful Linux command line as well as test my web apps locally running the Linux version of php, however I prefer to keep using the IDE because I feel that version control, FTP, code completion etc. are helpful to my productivity. Eventually I would also like to dive into Ruby and Python and I hear that they're not really suited for Windows users. Is running a Linux distro in a virtual machine my best bet? Should I try something like Wubi (Ubuntu running inside Windows)? Or are there any other options out there?

  I'm using VirtualEnv on Windows XP. I'm wondering if I have my brain wrapped around it correctly. I ran virtualenv ENV and it created C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV. I then changed my PATH variable to include C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV\Scripts instead of C:\Python27\Scripts. Then, I checked out Django into C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV\Lib\site-packages\django-trunk, updated my PYTHON_PATH variable to point the new Django directory, and continued to easy_install other things (which of course go into my new C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV\Lib\site-packages directory). I understand why I should use VirtualEnv so I can run multiple versions of Django, and other libraries on the same machine, but does this mean that to switch between environments I have to basically change my PATH and PYTHON_PATH variable? So, I go from developing one Django project which uses Django 1.2 in an environment called ENV and then change my PATH and such so that I can use an environment called ENV2 which has the dev version of Django? Is that basically it, or is there some better way to automatically do all this (I could update my path in Python code, but that would require me to write machine-specific code in my application)? Also, how does this process compare to using VirtualEnv on Linux (I'm quite the beginner at Linux).

• List of files and libraries that Window SDK contains?

  For developing programs for windows, we need windows SDK. I understand that this SDK is what helps to create windows and handle window events and all that. I suppose it also enables us to manipulate with files and registries. (Does the same SDK is the reason for thread creation and handling?) All that is fine. I would like to know what are the files and libraries that come as a part of this SDK. Also does it come when I install the OS or when I install editors like Visual studio? Sometimes I see links to windows SDK separately as such. Is it same as the one that I get when installing Visual Studio or has something more than that.
