• Control Windows VM from Linux Host

  I am looking for a tool that will allow me to monitor and control programs running inside a Windows VM from the Linux host machine. I realize that this is similar to what a rootkit would do, and I am completely happy to use some hacker software if it provides the necessary functionality (and if I can get it in source-code form). If I can't find something, I'll have to write it using C. Probably an embedded HTTP server running on an odd port and doing some kind of XMLRPC thing. Here is the basic functionality I need: Get list of running processes Kill a process. Start a process Read/write/create/delete files I would like to: - Read contents of screen - Read all controls on screen. - Send arbitrary click to a Windows control. Does anything like this exist?

• Google Docs viewer in IE

  Hey all, I've searched high and low for a solution, but can't find one. I'm using Google Docs Viewer to view PDF files. It's a great tool, but I can't seem to get it working in Internet Explorer (7 or 8). All my images come up as a 'missing' icon. If I view the file externally, it seems to load fine and it will start working (I'm assuming because the images are being cached). The document is being displayed in an iframe and works in all other browsers. Has anyone come across a solution to get it to work in IE? If not, is there an alternative that can display PPT and PDF files? Thanks

• Would a Socket Connection Outperform an Intarvaled Database Sweep and Requests?

  I'm building a small chat application to add to an existing framework. There will only be 20-50 users MAX at any one time. I was wondering if I could get away with updating a cache file containing (semi) live chat data for whichever users happen to be chatting just by performing timed queries and regular AJAX refreshes for new data as opposed to learning how to open and maintain a socket connection. I'm sure there are existing chat plug-ins out there. But I just had a hell of a time installing one and I could see building the whole damn thing taking just as much time as plugging one in.   I've got some drivers which are basically LibUSB-Win32 with a new .inf file do describe product/vendor ids and strings which describe my hardware. This works fine for 32 bit windows, but 64 bit versions have problems; namely that Microsoft in their wisdom require all drivers to be digitally signed. So my questions are thus: Is there a version of the LibUSB-Win32 drivers which are already signed I could use? If there aren't already some signed ones I can canibalise, what exactly do I have to do to get my drivers signed. Do I need to get 64 and 32 bit versions signed separately and will this cost more? Is this a free alternative to getting them signed? Are there any other options I should consider besides requiring that my customers boot into test mode each time they start their machines (not an option I'd consider).

• SWFUpload is it possible to upload multiple files to a single php script execution

  Hello, I'm trying to implement SWFUpload into an existing PHP upload funcitonality. My current backend script however expects 2 fiels to be uploaded in a single php script execution. (e.g. it excepts the $_FILES parameters to contain 2 entries). So i'm queueing 2 files with SWFUpload and start uploading them. However it appears SWFLUpload calls the php backend script for each queued file. I'd rather modify SWFUpload to send the files with a single backend script execution instead on having to adjust the backend script. Is anyone familiar with this? I've searched various resources (like the SWFUploads docs and forum, but have not found similiar topics. Thanks in advance

• Making php-mode Compatible with Emacs 23

  I am using Emacs 23 and php-mode.el 1.5.0. When I have this in my .emacs: (require 'php-mode) I get this error message when Emacs starts: Warning (initialization): An error occurred while loading `/Users/kdj/.emacs': error: `c-lang-defconst' must be used in a file To ensure normal operation, you should investigate and remove the cause of the error in your initialization file. Start Emacs with the `--debug-init' option to view a complete error backtrace. If I evaluate (require 'php-mode) after Emacs starts, I don't get any error messages. I found a blog entry which indicates that this problem is specific to Emacs 23 (that is, there is no error with Emacs 22.x), but it doesn't give any solutions. Don't know if this matters, but I'm using Mac OS X, and I built Emacs from the current CVS sources, using ./configure --with-ns. Anybody know what's going on here, and/or how I can fix it?

• Multi-part gzip file random access (in Java)

  This may fall in the realm of "not really feasible" or "not really worth the effort" but here goes. I'm trying to randomly access records stored inside a multi-part gzip file. Specifically, the files I'm interested in are compressed Heretrix Arc files. (In case you aren't familiar with multi-part gzip files, the gzip spec allows multiple gzip streams to be concatenated in a single gzip file. They do not share any dictionary information, it is simple binary appending.) I'm thinking it should be possible to do this by seeking to a certain offset within the file, then scan for the gzip magic header bytes (i.e. 0x1f8b, as per the RFC), and attempt to read the gzip stream from the following bytes. The problem with this approach is that those same bytes can appear inside the actual data as well, so seeking for those bytes can lead to an invalid position to start reading a gzip stream from. Is there a better way to handle random access, given that the record offsets aren't known a priori?

• Light weight C++ SAX XML parser

  I know of at least three light weight C++ XML parsers: RapidXML, TinyXML and PugiXML. However, all three use a DOM based interface (ie, they build their own in-memory representation of the XML document and then provide an interface to traverse and manipulate it). For most situations that I have to deal with, I much prefer the SAX interface (where the parser just spits out a stream of events like start-of-tag, and the application code is responsible for doing whatever it wants based on those events). Can anyone recommend a light weight C++ XML library with a SAX interface? Edit: I should also note the Microsoft XmlLite library, which does use a SAX interface. Unfortunately, it's ruled out for me at the moment since as far as I know it's closed source and Windows only (please correct me if I'm wrong on this).

In objective C I know you can use performSelectorOnMainThread and pass it a method to call using the main thread. What is the equivalent way of calling ImportProgressChanged() from the main thread?

• Finding the closest grid coordinate to the mouse position with javascript/jQuery

  What I'm trying to do is make a grid of invisible coordinates on the page equally spaced. I then want a <div> to be placed at whatever grid coordinate is closest to the pointer when onclick is triggered. Here's the rough idea: I have the tracking of the mouse coordinates and the placing of the <div> worked out fine. What I'm stuck with is how to approach the problem of the grid of coordinates. First of all, should I have all my coordinates in an array which I then compare my onclick coordinate to? Or seeing as my grid coordinates follow a rule, could I do something like finding out which coordinate that is a multiple of whatever my spacing is is closest to the onclick coordinate? And then, where do I start with working out which grid point coordinate is closest? What's the best way of going about it? Thanks!

  Hi all. I am looking for the VB.NET code of a very handy little *.bas file I used to use in Visual Basic 6. The file was called timeout.bas and it was the greatest module ever to me. I want to switch to start using VB.NET finally but this single file is holding me back. Trying to use .NET without it is like crippling me. • When to choose LAMP over ASP.NET?

  Hello. A friend wants to start a dating website, she wants me to help her. We still haven't discussed on what platform it'll be developed, but I'm thinking she'll suggest LAMP to save a buck (which is one reason already to chose over ASP.NET already). If the dating website does well, it'll potentially hold a large amount of data (I'm not sure if this would be another reason to consider either ASP.NET or LAMP). Anyway, I ask this from an ASP.NET developer point of view. I have very little, almost null experience with LAMP, and I don't like it very much either, so if she decides to go with PHP odds are I won't help her. So what would be some good points to bring up when deciding which platform to develop on? Please be objective, I don't want this to be argumentative or anything, try to stick to facts, not opinions alone. Thanks!

  I have a ruby on rails app where I want users to be able to store a list. The list is similar to a shopping cart except for the fact that they input their own items. I would like store everything in the session, but this seems like it would get complicated and would start to take up space after a while. The other way of doing it was to create temporary entries in the database with a "temp" flag and session id so that they could come back to it. The only problem with this is, how do I clean out stale entries?

• Is there a way to create custom UIDataDetectorTypes?

  Hi All, What I am trying to do is create tooltip functionality so that certain words in my instructional app can be tapped and the definition pops up. For the popup part I plan on using code from “AFInformationView” which provides bubbles on the iPhone. The part I'm struggling with is how to associate A particular word's location with the bubble. Currently I have the text on a UILabel that is on a custom UITableCell. Since I calculate the row height on the fly with: [textToUse sizeWithFont:[UIFont systemFontOfSize:FONT_SIZE] constrainedToSize:CGSizeMake(stop-start, 500)]; I'm not sure what the coordinates for a specific word will be. I was thinking that if I created a custom DataDetectorType that could be the fix. If anyone knows how to do this or has any other ideas I would be happy to hear them. Thanks, Andrew

So there are times when I want the command window to not show up and times when I want it to stay open so that the user can see what happened, possibly respond with the appropriate input.   Hey All, I have just taken over a project for a client and the database schema is in a total mess. I would like to rename a load of fields make it a relationship database. But doing this will be a painstaking process as they have an API running of it also. So the idea would be to create a new database and start re-writing the code to use this instead. But I need a way to keep these tables in sync during this process. Would you agree that I should use MYSQL EVENT's to keep updating the new table on Inserts / updates & deletes?? Example: You goto start.com/auto-login-hack (via GET)... then PHP sets the right headers etc. and sends you via POST to 3rdparty.com/login.php with login credentials... I have done this is the past by having an HTML form and an onload script that submits the form to the destination... First: when the page loads and you attempt to click on one of the large images to advance, nothing happens. Once a thumbnail is clicked, the click functionality of the large image comes available. I'm trying to fix it so when the page loads, the user can just start clicking the large image. Second: when an image is clicked, the thumbnail highlight changes. The only problem there is once it gets past 4, the "current" thumbnail needs to be seen, thus the carousel should go to that one. Right now the code for that is nextThumb.closest('.thumbscontainer').jcarousel('next'); but that makes it scroll every time you click. Thanks for any help

When quoting jobs for anything over $10,000 I always feel uneasy and unsure about the estimate I'm providing (though, I'm not sure why, I know what I'm worth [ I think :-) ] and I charge appropriately. I'm sure there are more (noob) freelancers here on S.O. that feel the same way. In danger of being voted closed because of its subjective (but factual) nature - the question(s): What is the largest amount you have charged for a single programming job (not including maintenance, support, or residual income). What are some of the details of the specific job? (research, q&a, challenges, etc) What languages did you use to get the job done? Assuming you bill your work at an hourly rate, what was the rate? How long did the job actually take you to complete? (from start to deployment, how many weeks, months, years?)

• Is it possible to run a MIDP application under Android

  The Google Market offers an application purporting to run J2ME MIDP applications on the Nexus One. I have tried this application but it only appears to run MIDP applications that are downloaded from particular web sites; it does not seem capable of picking up a MIDP application that is stored on the SD card in the phone. I have suggested to the developers that they might like to add such functionality, but they have not been particularly responsive to my messages. So I would like to build my own MIDP runner for Android and would like to see if I can find a pointer as to where to start, or even whether this is possible. The MIDP application in question was supplied on CD along with a security camera system and permits remote viewing and remote control over the security system. Clearly it wasn't built with the Android platform in mind. However, if it is possible somehow to run MIDP applications on Android (perhaps by creating some kind of sandbox environment for example) then I'd be quite keen to develop it.
