  There are a few different APIs for accessing Twitter from .NET.  In this example, I'll use linq2twitter.  Other APIs can be found on Twitter's development site. • Why is 1px sometimes 2px when specified in Android XML?

  I've got a desire for a one-pixel divider line, just for looks. I thought I could accomplish this using a View of height 1px, with a defined background. However, I'm getting some very odd behavior on different devices - sometimes the 1px ends up as 2px. Looking at what's new in emacs23, I noted that: ** When running in a new enough xterm (newer than version 242), Emacs asks xterm what the background color is and it sets up faces accordingly for a dark background if needed (the current default is to consider the background light). So it's a feature, not a bug? Anyway, is there some way that I can I tell emacs23 to ignore the xterm background settings when running in console mode, and use the settings in ~/.emacs instead? I'll also note that: It works fine in emacs23 running in a separate X window (without the -nw option). It worked fine in emacs22; and I'm not really sure whether I need to use emacs23... Running M-x set-background-color within emacs23 -nw has no effect. It's not just xterm: the same problem exists with $TERM=cygwin, for example.

  I have a button element with a custom background (image+color) and no borders except for a 2px border-bottom (and a bunch of other properties --code below) which renders quite differently in Firefox and in IE8. The problem is, this is a work for a company that uses IE8 as their only browser, so it's important that the button renders well in IE8. Here's a visual comparison between the two: My question here is not about the padding difference (I'm looking into that), but about the weird border that is visible on IE8 in addition to the regular border (border-bottom). Can anyone explain to me where it comes from and how to get rid of it? Thanks in advance. • CSS layout problem on Firefox with filling space between end of left column and footer

  Basically, the left column is supposed to extend to the footer with the continuous red color. However, in Firefox on pages with lots of text, the column does not extend to the footer and leaves a large white gap--see site: http://library.luhs.org/JHSII/about.html I've tried readjusting the heights, creating the sticky footer, and other things I've read about on this site. • Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

• Cisco Unified Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

  Running gnome under Ubuntu Lucid $ env | grep TERM TERM=xterm COLORTERM=gnome-terminal I had to edit both my .muttrc and my vim colorscheme to change the background color from black to none in order to get a proper black background (or, more accurately, to retain the terminal's default black background). Setting it to black resulted in a dark grey background. This only happens with gnome-terminal; konsole, xterm and rxvt are fine.

• Big Data – Buzz Words: What is MapReduce – Day 7 of 21

  In yesterday’s blog post we learned what is Hadoop. In this article we will take a quick look at one of the four most important buzz words which goes around Big Data – MapReduce. What is MapReduce? MapReduce was designed by Google as a programming model for processing large data sets with a parallel, distributed algorithm on a cluster. Though, MapReduce was originally Google proprietary technology, it has been quite a generalized term in the recent time. MapReduce comprises a Map() and Reduce() procedures. Procedure Map() performance filtering and sorting operation on data where as procedure Reduce() performs a summary operation of the data. This model is based on modified concepts of the map and reduce functions commonly available in functional programing. The library where procedure Map() and Reduce() belongs is written in many different languages. The most popular free implementation of MapReduce is Apache Hadoop which we will explore tomorrow. Advantages of MapReduce Procedures The MapReduce Framework usually contains distributed servers and it runs various tasks in parallel to each other. There are various components which manages the communications between various nodes of the data and provides the high availability and fault tolerance. Programs written in MapReduce functional styles are automatically parallelized and executed on commodity machines. The MapReduce Framework takes care of the details of partitioning the data and executing the processes on distributed server on run time. During this process if there is any disaster the framework provides high availability and other available modes take care of the responsibility of the failed node. As you can clearly see more this entire MapReduce Frameworks provides much more than just Map() and Reduce() procedures; it provides scalability and fault tolerance as well. A typical implementation of the MapReduce Framework processes many petabytes of data and thousands of the processing machines. How do MapReduce Framework Works? A typical MapReduce Framework contains petabytes of the data and thousands of the nodes. Here is the basic explanation of the MapReduce Procedures which uses this massive commodity of the servers. Map() Procedure There is always a master node in this infrastructure which takes an input. Right after taking input master node divides it into smaller sub-inputs or sub-problems. These sub-problems are distributed to worker nodes. A worker node later processes them and does necessary analysis. Once the worker node completes the process with this sub-problem it returns it back to master node. Reduce() Procedure All the worker nodes return the answer to the sub-problem assigned to them to master node. The master node collects the answer and once again aggregate that in the form of the answer to the original big problem which was assigned master node. The MapReduce Framework does the above Map () and Reduce () procedure in the parallel and independent to each other. All the Map() procedures can run parallel to each other and once each worker node had completed their task they can send it back to master code to compile it with a single answer. This particular procedure can be very effective when it is implemented on a very large amount of data (Big Data). • Edit TabControl template in Silverlight project

  I'm trying to modify the template for the TabControl in my silverlight application. I used Expression Blend to get the Template and copied it into my project. I did this before for Expander and got it to work with a few minor adjustments. The template for TabControl references the ns/assembly "clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls.Primitives;assembly=System.Windows.Controls" and uses the TabPanel control from it. I can't seem to make a reference to this. • Asynchronous pages in the ASP.NET framework - where are the other threads and how is it reattached?

  Sorry for this dumb question on Asynchronous operations. This is how I understand it. IIS has a limited set of worker threads waiting for requests. If one request is a long running operation, it will block that thread. This leads to fewer threads to serve requests. Way to fix this - use asynchronous pages. When a request comes in, the main worker thread is freed and this other thread is created in some other place. The main thread is thus able to serve other requests. When the request completes on this other thread, another thread is picked from the main thread pool and the response is sent back to the client. 1) Where are these other threads located? 2) IF ASP.NET likes creating new threads, why not increase the number of threads in the main worker pool - they are all running on the same machine anyway? 3) If the main thread hands off a request to this other thread, why does the request not get disconnected? It magically hands off the request to another worker thread somewhere else and when the long running process completes, it picks a thread from the main worker pool and sends response to the client. I am amazed...but how does that work?
