  • Code behind methods vs. Jquery AJAX calls

    Theres a war brewing I can feel it! Old school coders are used to having every server control create events in the .cs files.. for example.. Getting the Initial load of data, Saving Data, Deleting data... and then binding datasources to the server control.. New school coders want to do it in Jquery + AJAX calls to .svc files... That gives automatic no post backs so that is a advantage... and I think its a different way of thinking.. All of a sudden the UI related events are all being done in Jquery.. What is the most modern and efficient way to go ? How can I convince the old school coders to let us you this new paradigm ? (assuming it is the better way)

  • Put logic behind generated LinqToSql fields

    In a database I use throughout several projects, there is a field that should actually be a boolean but is for reasons nobody can explain to me a field duplicated over two tables where one time it is a char ('Y'/'N') and one time an int (1/0). When I generate a datacontext with LinqToSql the fields off course gets these datatypes. It would be nice if I don't have to drag this stupid choice of datatype throughout the rest of my application. Is there a way to give the generated classes a little bit of logic that just return me return this.equals('Y'); and return this==1; Preferably without having to make an EXTRA field in my partial class. It would be a solution to give the generated field a totally different name that can only be accessed through the partial class and then generate the extra field with the original name with my custom logic in the partial class. I don't know how to alter the accesibility level in my generated class though.. Any suggestions?

    I am using jQuery UI; Draggable http://jqueryui.com/demos/draggable invoked like this: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#side_bar").sortable({ revert: true }); $(".draggable").draggable({ containment: 'parent', hascroll: true, handle: 'div.box_header', scrollSensitivity: 100, scrollSpeed: 100, axis: 'y', connectToSortable: '#side_bar', helper: 'clone', opacity: 0.35 }); }); You can see the html structure on http://www.sarsclan.co.uk (right side bar area). It seems to create a transparant clone as your dragging, but when you drop it puts the draggable div in the right place, but leaves the original div in it's place and just appends the dom with a clone of that original div in its new place.

    Possible Duplicate: Why are statements in many programming languages terminated by semicolons? I just found out that R Programming Language, which is somewhat belong to the C family (I'm not sure about this but it uses {} instead of begin end), uses a new line as a delimiter for a new line of code instead of the semi-colon ;. Why is some programming language designed to use a new line instead of a symbol like semi-colon which I think will make the code more readable? Phyton total = item_one + \ item_two + \ item_three C total = item_one + item_two + item_three;

  • HTML: How to get a child element to show behind (lower z-index) than its parent

    I need for a certain dynamic element to always appear on top of another element, no matter what order in the DOM tree they are. Is this possible? I've tried z-index (with position: relative), and it doesn't seem to work. I hate to be vague, but this is the simplest way I can think of asking this question without explaining its purpose ad nauseum. So, to recap, I need <div class="a"> <div class="b"></div> </div> <div class="b"> <div class="a"></div> </div> To display exactly the same when rendered. And for flexibility purposes (I'm planning on distributing a plugin that needs this functionality), I'd really like to not have to resort to absolute or fixed positioning.

  • Regexp look-behind to match internet speeds

    So the user may search for "10 mbit" after which I want to capture the "10" so I can use it in a speed-search rather than a string-search. This isn't a problem, the below regexp does this fine: if (preg_match("/(\d+)\smbit/", $string)){ ... } But, the user may search for something like "10/10 mbit" or "10-100 mbit". I don't want to match those with the above regexp - they should be handled in another fashion. So I would like a regexp that matches "10 mbit" if the number is all-numeric as a whole word (i.e. contained by whitespace, newline or lineend/linestart) Using lookbehind, I did this: if (preg_match("#(?<!/)(\d+)\s+mbit#i", $string)){ Just to catch those that doesn't have "/" before them, but this matched true for this string: "10/10 mbit" so I'm obviously doing something wrong here, but what?

  • can't click on input element behind div element

    On my site: http://alsite.com.br/solalev/ I have some elements on the bottom of page that I can't click through. Above the elements is a div called push.. I use this div to make the footer always stay on the bottom of my page even when the content is smaller... (I dont know if I do this right.. but it has worked).. So.. on Chrome and Firefox I can't click.. but on IE this works.... I use this: .push{ pointer-events: none; } but nothing happens...

  • Oredev 2012: Summary and source code

    This week, I had the pleasure to be invited to talk at Oredev, a really cool conference taking place in Malmo, Sweden. The whole event is awesome, including a very special dinner on Monday including sauna and swimming in a 6 degrees cold Baltic sea, and a reception with dinner at the town hall, including the mayor himself. Considering Malmo is a town of 300'000 inhabitants, it is a pretty nice occasion and the historical building itself is really worth seeing. For those interested, I placed my pictures on my Flickr account. I had a workshop on Tuesday morning about Windows 8 development with XAML/C#, and then a session on Wednesday about MVVM in Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, of course using MVVM Light. I was very nervous because I reworked some of my demos as recently as this morning, in the wake of the Build conference last week and the release of both the Windows Phone SDK and MVVM Light V4.1. Everything went well however, and if I judge by the people I talked t after the talk, and Twitter, everything went pretty well. Before my talk on Tuesday, I had the pleasure to see a talk by Iris Classon (@irisclasson) on the challenges of being a "n00b" and a woman in software development. I especially appreciated her research and conclusions on the lack of women I our industry, a topic that is dear to my heart (because I want the best possible future for my two daughters, and also because I really enjoy working with women on projects, and getting a different insight on the art of software development. I really want to thank the excellent organization committee for their hard work and their fantastic welcome to Malmo. In particular Emily Holweck did a wonderful job and was super helpful throughout the preparation and the conference itself. I made a few pictures during my stay, all with the new Nokia Lumia 920, and hope you will enjoy them too. The source code and the slides… The source code is available for download from Skydrive. You will find the following: Windows 8 workshop slides. MVVM Applied slides Source code package with Win8Demo: The demo I built during the 4 hours workshop, with some light MVVM, web services (JSON), GridView, Design time data (Blend / Visual Studio designer), Bing maps integration, location sensor, Search pane integration. SemanticZoomSample: a sample I put together to demonstrate the SemanticZoom control, with two GridViews and of course full design time data for Blend work.   • ColdFusion Session issue - multiple users behind one proxy IP -- cftoken and cfid seems to be shared

    Hi Everyone, I have an application that uses coldfusion's session management (instead of the J2EE) session management. We have one client, who has recently switched their company's traffic to us to come viaa proxy server in their network. So, to our Coldfusion server, it appears that all traffic is coming from this one IP Address, for all of the accounts of this one company.. Of the session variables, Part 1 is kept in a cflock, and Part 2 is kept in editable session variables. I may be misundestanding, but we have done it this way as we modify some values as needed throughout the application's usage. We are now running into an issue of this client having their session variables mixed up (?). We have one case where we set a timestamp.. and when it comes time to look it up, it's empty. From the looks of it this is happening because of another user on the same token. My initial thoughts are to look into modifying our existing session management to somehow generate a unique cftoken/cfid, or to start using jsession_ID, if this solves the problem at all. I have done some basic research on this issue and couldn't find anything similar, so I thought I'd ask here. Thanks!

  • NTLM Authentication fails ONLY with IE against 2k8 App server behind 2k8 IIS7 Reverse Proxy

    I'm developing an ASP.NET application for an intranet site that is using Windows/NTLM/WIA/whatever authentication. The application is hosted on a Windows 2k8 server but is accessed through a Reverse Proxy using IIs7 on another 2k8 machine. Authentication works fine in FireFox, Chrome and Safari but fails in IE8. If I circumvent the Proxy and access the application server directly then it works fine so it has something to do with proxy. There's nothing in the Event Viewer on any of the 3 machines to indicate what might be happening. If you connect using IE8 it prompts for your credentials instead of automatically passing them, yes I've setup an explicit trust over an above the domain trust, but it still errors out with a 401 error returned from the proxy. Any ideas where to start troubleshooting this?

  • Visual Studio Code Analysis - Does Microsoft follow it themselves?

    Did a quick search but could not find anything about this. I guess all of you know that the Visual Studio Code Analysis is quite nitpicking and gives warnings about a lot of things. Does anybody know how well Microsoft follow this themselves..? That is, if I were to run a code analysis on their assemblies, would the warnings be none or very few (perhaps surpress warning with a justification..?).
