• Dynamically disable custom (VBA) Excel context menu buttons?

  The Scenario Hi guys, I am about to add a few custom controls to the cell context menu in my Excel workbook using the instructions found on this MSDN page. The only problem I am having is that I need the items to only be enabled for a specific column/range of cells. I've looked around, and I've been unable to find any steps for this--there are some for VSTO development (written in C#), but that is not what I need. I plan to write this using the VBA IDE built into Office, and perhaps a bit of XML using the Custom UI Editor. The Question So basically, I'm looking for a way to run a function at the time the context menu is called (i.e., upon right-click) that validates the selection to make sure it is in the appropriate column. If it isn't, I would like my custom buttons to be greyed out. P.S. Please don't think I am asking you to write my code. Creating these buttons should be very simple, as I have created many before (albeit they were all Ribbon items), and I hope it is okay to ask for some quick assistance on this very specific issue.   Cenario: I have a GridView bound to a DataSource, every column is sortable. my main query is something like: select a, b, c, d, e, f from table order by somedate desc i added a filter form where i can define values to each one of the fields and get the results of a where form. As a result from this, i had to do a custom sorting so that when i sort by a field, i am sorting the filtered query and not the main one. Now i have to do custom paging, for the same reason, but i don't understand the philosophy of it: I want to guarantee that i can: filter the results sort by a column when i click on page 2, i get page two of the filtered and sorted results I don't know what i have to do, so i can bind the GV with this. My sorting Method, that is working just fine looks something like: string condition = GetConditions(); //gets a string like " where a>1 and b>2" depending on the filter the user defines string query = "select a, b, c, d, e, f from table "; string direction = (e.SortDirection == SortDirection.Ascending)? • PHP If/Else for Wordpress Custom Fields

  I have a site that is using custom fields, and I want to either show the content for the field if the field is being used, and if the field is not being used per a Post then of course don't show the contents of the fields. Seems my code below is not correct, as it is showing the content in the else block when the Post is not using any of the custom fields. Any help would be greatly appreciated! • Writing JavaScript from a Custom Control

  I'm new to writing custom controls. I have MyCustomControl.cs and in my Render method I want to render out about 50 lines of JavaScript. I also want to keep any indentation for readability once it's spit out/rendered on the client when viewing source.

• MVC3 Custom view engine

  I have a custom View Engine that derives from WebFormViewEngine. There's a lot of stuff going on in here, mostly caching. I want to be able to use WebFormViewEngine AND RazorViewEngine at the same time, is this possible? Ideally I'd like to do; ViewEngines.Add(new MyViewEngine<WebFormsViewEngine>()); ViewEngines.Add(new MyViewEngine<RazorViewEngine>()); if a .ascx/.aspx/.master file exists then use WebForms, otherwise use Razor is a .cshtml file exists. EDIT: I should of worded my question better. As my custom view engine derives from WebFormViewEngine it obviously uses WebForms, I can't derive from two classes. I can derive from RazorViewEngine but then I'll loose WebForms. I can duplicate my code entirely, derive from RazorViewEngine and edit the views file extensions, etc. but as I said I've got a lot of custom code in my view engine and would be duplicating hundreds of lines. WebFormViewEngine and RazorViewEngine derive from BuildManagerViewEngine which in turn implements IViewEngine. The problem with that is I have to implement methods CreatePartialView() and CreateView() but how would I know what to return (WebForms/Razor?) using generics?

• Override `drop` for a custom sequence

  In short: in Clojure, is there a way to redefine a function from the standard sequence API (which is not defined on any interface like ISeq, IndexedSeq, etc) on a custom sequence type I wrote? 1. Huge data files I have big files in the following format: A long (8 bytes) containing the number n of entries n entries, each one being composed of 3 longs (ie, 24 bytes) 2. Custom sequence I want to have a sequence on these entries. Since I cannot usually hold all the data in memory at once, and I want fast sequential access on it, I wrote a class similar to the following: (deftype DataSeq [id ^long cnt ^long i cached-seq] clojure.lang.IndexedSeq (index [_] i) (count [_] (- cnt i)) (seq [this] this) (first [_] (first cached-seq)) (more [this] (if-let [s (next this)] s '())) (next [_] (if (not= (inc i) cnt) (if (next cached-seq) (DataSeq. id cnt (inc i) (next cached-seq)) (DataSeq. id cnt (inc i) (with-open [f (open-data-file id)] ; open a memory mapped byte array on the file ; seek to the exact position to begin reading ; decide on an optimal amount of data to read ; eagerly read and return that amount of data )))))) The main idea is to read ahead a bunch of entries in a list and then consume from that list. Whenever the cache is completely consumed, if there are remaining entries, they are read from the file in a new cache list. Simple as that. To create an instance of such a sequence, I use a very simple function like: (defn ^DataSeq load-data [id] (next (DataSeq. id (count-entries id) -1 []))) ; count-entries is a trivial "open file and read a long" memoized As you can see, the format of the data allowed me to implement count in very simply and efficiently. 3. drop could be O(1) In the same spirit, I'd like to reimplement drop. The format of these data files allows me to reimplement drop in O(1) (instead of the standard O(n)), as follows: if dropping less then the remaining cached items, just drop the same amount from the cache and done; if dropping more than cnt, then just return the empty list. otherwise, just figure out the position in the data file, jump right into that position, and read data from there. My difficulty is that drop is not implemented in the same way as count, first, seq, etc. The latter functions call a similarly named static method in RT which, in turn, calls my implementation above, while the former, drop, does not check if the instance of the sequence it is being called on provides a custom implementation. Obviously, I could provide a function named anything but drop that does exactly what I want, but that would force other people (including my future self) to remember to use it instead of drop every single time, which sucks. So, the question is: is it possible to override the default behaviour of drop? 4. A workaround (I dislike) While writing this question, I've just figured out a possible workaround: make the reading even lazier. The custom sequence would just keep an index and postpone the reading operation, that would happen only when first was called. The problem is that I'd need some mutable state: the first call to first would cause some data to be read into a cache, all the subsequent calls would return data from this cache. There would be a similar logic on next: if there's a cache, just next it; otherwise, don't bother populating it -- it will be done when first is called again. This would avoid unnecessary disk reads. However, this is still less than optimal -- it is still O(n), and it could easily be O(1). Anyways, I don't like this workaround, and my question is still open. Any thoughts? Thanks.

• Windows 7 Backup not backing up custom library?

  I have created a custom Library under Windows 7 64bit professional to handle my source code. When I tried Windows Backup and Restore for the first time I get the following error Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Source. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) I've found a thread on the error on the Microsoft answers site. But it appears to be 404 (there is a version in Google's Cache) and the thread starter never gets an answer to his issue that works. The official Microsoft answer on this is This problem is due to one or more profiles under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList with missing ProfileImagePath. To check whether you have missing profiles: Open regedit, navigate to the above registry key. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList). Expand the list Click on each of the profiles listed. The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile, %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService respectively. Starting from the 4th profile, the ProfileImagePath should contain path to the user profiles on your machine, such as C:\users\Christine If one or more of the profile has no profile image, then you have missing profiles. To work around this, delete the profile in question (Caution: The registry contains critical settings that are necessary for your system to function properly. Take extra caution while making changes) First, export the ProfileList key for safekeeping. (Right click on the key, choose “Export”, and save it to the desktop.) Right click on the profile in question, choose delete. Try backup again. This does not work for me. Anyone have any idea what is going on here?

• Should windows services be created with custom users, or should I use one of LocalSystem/LocalServic

  I'm asking the question in general for the average custom developed NT service or unix OSS daemon ported to windows with SCM support. However, at the moment my immediate concern is for mongodb. From my experience with UNIX I like all my services to run as different unprivileged users. The way this has translated to windows is as follows: Create a local (or domain if it has to talk to SQL server) windows user with a long random password (lately an ASCII85 encoded guid generated from a different machine). Set it to next expire and forbid it from changing its password. Remove that user from the "Users Group". Grant that user "Login as a Service" permission. Give it read permission to the folder where the app resides, and write permission to the logs and data files the applications use. Assign the user to the service. Troubleshoot until the service starts. My feeling is that the unprivileged users are less powerful than the 3 special service users. I also feel that by isolating which users run which services, I would limit collateral damage if a way to compromise one service was found.

• SuPHP custom php.ini doesn't get read

  Took me about 4 hours to get a FastCGI + SuPHP running off Ubuntu 11.10 and i'm now happy that it works mighty fine except for ONE big problem. Custom php.ini's don't seem to load. I tried changing some options and then firing off a phpinfo() and nothing changes in the phpinfo() which leads me to think that there is definitely a problem with the loading of the configuration file. <IfModule mod_suphp.c> AddHandler x-httpd-php .php <Location /> SuPHP_AddHandler x-httpd-php </Location> suPHP_ConfigPath /home/mdumoulin/Documents/tests/tests suPHP_Engine on </IfModule> As you can see, i took great care in making sure i wasn't referencing the php.ini file itself but the directory of the vhost. In the php.ini located in "/home/mdumoulin/Documents/tests/tests/php.ini", you can find: [PHP] error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED & ~E_NOTICE display_errors = Off And the log in /var/log/suphp/suphp.log doesn't contain anything relevant, (only old errors that occured before this post while i was testing suphp... So i'm stumped there, dunno what more i can do! Anyone got an idea? EDIT: FINALY, got time to work on this, i disabled FCGI and only enabled SuPHP but after restarting i still see "Server API: CGI/FastCGI". Is this what i should be getting or not? I believe that it's normal i get CGI since SUPHP works with a CGI... But i'm not too sure anymore...

• Custom MS-DOS / FreeDOS

  Goal : Build a custom DOS to boot into. To automate tasks like formating a drive, or doing recovery. I've been using Grub4DOS to boot into these images. So far I've looking into taking a windows repair disk ISO and extracting. I can't seem to find the autoexec.bat in the disk. I really don't know where to look for the startup configuration file to change or how to add an autoexec.bat. I've tried MS-DOS 6.22. But it lacks the diskpart tool I require. I've tried extracting the images and adding it. Then I got a boot failed. I assume that after i added it. All the files when to lower case names and I assume that the OS is case sensitive. Then I've looking into using FreeDOS. But I don't know how it works at all. Partially because I can't seem to grasp the help/wiki's information. I looked into getting a bearbones release with just the kernel and I think it's the config.sys file. But I don't have any idea on how the packaging system works to incorporate diskpart into it. So really I'm in general looking for a small bootable DOS to where I can incorporate diskpart and setup an autoexec.bat for the actual function to carry out and to boot into. • Loading dependencies for custom puppet functions

  I have written a custom puppet function, which is working fine, that depends on the cloudservers gem (a Rackspace client library). This is fine if I have pre-installed the gem on a server before running puppet but totally breaks if I have not installed the gem as the function seems to be run during the 'compilation' sweep, well before my package definition is realised. Alternatively, is there a way that I can add dependencies somewhere in the functions folder that will be available to the function?

• Are there any custom keyboard available for laptops

  My work laptop is a HP elitebook 8560w which I mainly use for programming. Usually I have a external keyboard but recently I have been working out of office and therefore have been using the laptops own keyboard. One thing has really started to bug me. The keyboard layout of this 15.6" laptop contains numpad but the arrow keys are really bad (too small). Also when programming, I really miss a standard inverted T-arrow keys and the home/end/PgUp/PgDn buttons. Then it occurred to me; I would rather give up a numpad than a standard arrow keys. (The keyboard real estate in 15.6" laptop would allow this, and I really have to agree with Jeff Atwood here http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009/02/have-keyboard-will-program.html) Which brings me to my question. Do any laptop manufacturers make custom keyboards for their laptops or is there some third party manufacturer who could supply these kind of special keyboards? Quick googling on this doesn't give any meaningful results. Looks like that I have to carry an external keyboard with me if someone here can't give any pointers.

• AWS VPC ELB vs. Custom Load Balancing

  So I'm wondering if this is a good idea. I have a Amazon AWS VPC setup with a public and private subnets. So I all ready get the Internet Gateway and NAT. I was going to setup all my web servers (Apache2 isntances) and DB servers in the private subnet and use a Load Balancer/Reverse Proxy to pick up requests and send them into the private subnets cluster of servers. My question then, is Amazons ELB's a good use for these, or is it better to setup my own custom instance to handle the public requests and run them through the NAT using nginx or pound? I like the second option just for the sake of having a instance I can log into and check. As well as taking advantage of caching and fail2ban ddos prevention, as well as possibly using fail safes to redirect traffic. But I have no experience with their ELB's, so I thought I'd ask your opinions. Also, if you guys have an opinion on this as well, would using the second option allow me to only have 1 public IP address and be able to route SSH connections through port numbers to respective instances? • Creating Custom ISO Images

  I am working on creating some custom ISO images using primarily Fedora and CentOS. I want the image to be a bootable live CD with some specific files on it. I also want it to have the option to be able to be downloaded to the hard drive. I've read some various articles but want to get a few more opinions since I've never done this before. Currently I'm trying 2 different methods. Install Fedora with the configuration exactly how I want it and then run the livecd-tools program to pull everything I currently have to an ISO. I haven't got this to work yet but I do see a few issues with it. Such as the default passwords I had to put in. Run a Fedora live CD and install a few things I want on it and then copy the image of it. I believe this would work better since it has more of a live cd feel. However I"m not 100% sure how I should go about pulling the current image to my own ISO. I know some people have said to use mkisofs and a few other programs but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  Question: How do you add a custom folder to the collection of user folders that come with Ubuntu? Info: I just loaded my netbook with Ubuntu Desktop 10.04LTS (Desktop because it is an aspire one and the Apocalypse seems to follow when ever i try to install netbook remix onto it). It comes with standard folders like Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads(though this one doesn't appear until you actually download something), Videos, etc etc. These are handly little folders because they have little symbols on them and are nicely located in my file browser. it is basically like the folder lay out the windows had in vista. I do a lot of little programing on this computer so i have a folder in which i keep all these single kb code files. Obviously named "Code" that I keep in my home folder. But I would really like to it over listed next to my other user folders. In summary, how do you add a folder to the listing on the file browser. And, if possible, how do you give it an icon? (I understand fully that I will probably have to make said Icon) those two things are what I'm seeking to do. ~n P.s. please correct me if I'm using the wrong name. I just guessed and called them "User Folders" because they were folders the user uses. made sense. but if they have another name like "libraries" please say so. Thanks

• Custom keyboard map is causing issues with stuck keys

  I have a Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard and I am running a custom keymap (dvorak with some stuff for umlauts): http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5/b054e11505c88e1bfc6ebd5da46bdb78-xmodmap_pke http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5/f5e42a5b8ba4a034c5945f719b3d2608-xmodmap_pm This used to work fine for years and it still does, except that I am now having issues with a stuck Mode_switch key. When I hit Control_R and Mode_switch at the same time (happens a lot by accident), the Mode_switch key gets into a 'stuck' state, all letters I type afterwards come out in their umlaut form as if Mode_switch is pressed. I can unstuck the Mode_switch by again hitting Control_R and Mode_switch at the same time, but that leaves Gnome in a broken state where it doesn't react to my Gnome keyboard shortcuts any longer. The key presses themselves are still registered by the window manager as one can see changes in the applications (cursor in Gnome Terminal will turn into an unfilled rect, as if the application lost focus), but don't trigger the bound action. Does anybody have a clue what could be causing this? Or does anybody has an idea how I could debug this? xev doesn't seem to help here, as it is reporting normal KeyPress/KeyRelease events, even when the key is stuck. Also the Gnome key bindings don't get reported at all when its in the 'broken' state. I assume they are captured by the window manager before they even reach xev. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome and Metacity, I have disabled all OpenGL related effects, so Compiz shouldn't interfere. Some general info on which applications are involved in Gnomes key binding handling would be helpful as well, as I assume its metacity, but restarting metacity doesn't fix the issue.
