  i've read about design patterns and it seems that there are a lot of different design patterns to use. i wonder if there are some books that acts like a reference. "you want to build a framework, then consider this, this and this pattern". also giving some examples. then jumps to another implementation eg. search engine and gives some patterns and concrete examples to use. in this way you learn about the weakness and strength about each pattern and where they will fit, instead of just reading about every design pattern decoupled from each other. are there good "reference sheets" or other tutorials good for a beginner at this? thanks

• Using Qt with custom MinGW

  Hi, I don't know if this question would fit better on superuser.com, but since it's rather compiler related, I give it a try here. I have to use Qt with a specific version of gcc (4.5). I downloaded the last official Qt release for Windows (Vista, 32 bits version) and didn't install the shipped MinGW version; I just installed the Qt libraries/binaries. In a console, when I type qmake && make, make fails, complaining that 'g++' is not recognized as an internal command. If I type g++ in the same console, I however have the following output: g++: no input files So g++ is definitely recognized. For those who may ask, both the Qt binaries directory and MinGW binaries directory are in the system PATH environment variable. What could be wrong here ?

• Given a number of rectangles that can be rotated, find an enclosing rectangle of minimum area

  So, I'm trying to implement an algorithm that takes in a number of rectangles as input and tries to pack them into a rectangle of minimum area. The rectangles can all be rotated by 90 degrees. I realize that this is similar to the bin packing problem, but I am unable to find a good algorithm that accounts for the rotation. I found a paper that discusses this at length here and while I understand the article itself, I was hoping to find something simpler. Any suggestions? -Edit- I think I misstated the problem earlier. We are given a number of rectangles, such that each can be rotated by 90 degrees. We need to find a rectangle that fits all the given rectangles such that no two rectangles overlap, while minimizing the area of the enclosing rectangle. The problem I face here is that we are asked to find the minimum, as opposed to being given an enclosing rectangle and checking if the given rectangles fit or something of that sort.

• Styling a list as tabs with a background overflowing into content

  I couldn't think of any better way to name this question, but I'll explain. I have a mediawiki website with a background pattern (like parchment) behind the articles. At the top of each article I want to have tabs like wikipedia does (with page | talk | edit etc links). The problem is, the tabs should seamlessly fit with the article's background and I can't figure out if this is actually possible. The way I was trying to do it was positioning the list inside the actual content div and give the <li items a transparent background, but as far as I can see there's no way to color the rest of the <ul's background black without affecting the <li's in there. • Efficient persistent storage for simple id to table of values map for java

  I need to store some data that follows the simple pattern of mapping an "id" to a full table (with multiple rows) of several columns (i.e. some integer values [u, v, w]). The size of one of these tables would be a couple of KB. Basically what I need is to store a persistent cache of some intermediary results. This could quite easily be implemented as simple sql, but there's a couple of problems, namely I need to compress the size of this structure on disk as much as possible. (because of amount of values I'm storing) Also, it's not transactional, I just need to write once and simply read the contents of the entire table, so a relational DB isn't actually a very good fit. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? For some reason I can't seem to come up with something decent atm. Especially something with an API in java would be nice.

• Design review - do you think I'm doing this the right way? First commercial project for me!

  I'm tasked with designing an application that will allow a person to scan a legal document, save that associated with a Name and save it to a database. Now, inside of the Organization, there are many departments, and each department can have many sub departments. Problem lies in that some larger organizations will have many departments and smallers ones will only have 1 or two. I've though about creating a Department table and a Supdepartment table to create associations, etc. That way it's extensible and users can dynamically create departments to fit my program to their organizational scheme. Am I approaching this the right way? As I said, this is my first commercial application so I want to do it right and set a name for myself for delivering things on time and good code for other to expand upon.

• Problem with dictionary key in Python

  Hi all, For some project I have to make a dictionary in which the keys are urls,among which I have this url: http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll prd=windows&sbp=mediaplayer&ar=Media&sba=Guide&pver=6.2 the url is too long to fit in here I guess in one single line. there is a space between .dll and prd. I can build a dictionary without any errors this url is also a key. but for some reason when I want to extract the values associated to this key(url). I cannot, I get and error "error key:...." Does someone know what is wrong with this url? Are dictionary keys sensitive to some stuff? thanks

• resizing arrays when close to memory capacity

  So I am implementing my own hashtable in java, since the built in hashtable has ridiculous memory overhead per entry. I'm making an open-addressed table with a variant of quadratic hashing, which is backed internally by two arrays, one for keys and one for values. I don't have the ability to resize though. The obvious way to do it is to create larger arrays and then hash all of the (key, value) pairs into the new arrays from the old ones. This falls apart though when my old arrays take up over 50% of my current memory, since I can't fit both the old and new arrays in memory at the same time. Is there any way to resize my hashtable in this situation Edit: the info I got for current hashtable memory overheads is from here How much memory does a Hashtable use? Also, for my current application, my values are ints, so rather than store references to Integers, I have an array of ints as my values.

• Where can I get free real-time stock data?

  Does anyone know of a way to obtain free real-time stock data or near real-time stock data? I'd like to do this since I'm interested in the financial market, not for use in investment applications which is why I'm looking for something free. I've tried the Perl module Finance::YahooQuote but some of the fields such as last trade time appear to be broken. I've looked at the historical data but it doesn't fit my needs since I'd like to monitor the movements of the markets and stocks during the trading day not just open and close. I've also looked at http://www.opentick.com but they aren’t accepting new accounts and I can't find a timeline for when their network upgrade will be complete.

• Can you suggest good ways of generating URLS for viewing tagged content

  For example, here on stack overflow the URL http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/javascript+php will give you all questions tagged with javascript and php. The system I have allows tags with spaces in them, so the approach used here would not be a good fit for me. What character would you use to separate the tags, so the URLs are still human readable, google readable and web browser compatible. My gut feeling was to use commas. eg http://example.com/tagged/first+tag,second+tag Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

  Hi, I'm working on a Django project where I need to provide a lot of different visualizations on the same data (for example average of a value for each month, for each year / for a location, etc ...). I have been using OLAP database once in college, and I thought that it would fit my needs, but it appears that it is much to heavy for what I need. Actually the volume of data is not very big, so I don't need any optimization, just a way to present different visualizations of the same data without having to write 1000 times the same code. So let's recap : I need a python library : to emulate a multidimensional database (OLAP style would be nice because I think it is quite convenient : stat structure, and everything) non-intrusive, because I can't modify anything on the existing mysql database easy-to-use, because otherwise there's no point in replacing some overhead by another.

I know how much can be frustrating, programming hard for ten hours and then been caught by your boss watching XKCD during a 2 minutes break. I saw pitch black brightness on Lcd (how can you pretend to program on that?) or custom sized browser to fit a little space just below the IDE. My favourite one at the moment is using fire gesture plugin with FF; with a micro gesture you can hide FF to your tray in a blink of an eye. Do you have any trick to share?

• HTML: adjusting the font size according to the screen size

  I am building an intranet website that is intended to be seen by mobile phones using one of the following resolutions: 240x320, 320x240, 360x640 and 800x352. All content is to be seen covering the full screen. No scroll should be necessary. I have developed, initially for 360x640. When this content is seen on 240x320 or 320x240 the letter is too big and the user has to scroll to see all content. Is there any way to scale the letters down or up automatically, so the content will fit on every screen size? I mean, adjusting the text font size according to the current screen resolution? thanks for any help.

• jQuery: Animated header plugin

  I'm looking for a jQuery plugin that can help me with the following: I have a list of images I want to use for my header but they are pretty big (height especially) and I don't want to resize them to fit my small header div. What I'd want is a plugin that allows the images to start at the bottom of the div (or rather the top of the image at the top of the div) and move upwards so the entire image can be seen, and once up they are shown entirely (bottom of image at bottom of div) they should "blend" (opacity toggle or something alike) with the next image and thus create a continuous loop with all the images. I've looked through several plugins but have never found one that can achieve what I'm looking for (maybe I'm asking for a tad too much) but my JS is not sufficient enough to build it myself. • Float over two elements

  My problem is rather complex to explain, so I'll show you an example: http://ewolf.bplaced.de/misc/float.htm I want to have a floated element (the blue box) to be be placed over two other elements (red and green) and I want the whole thing to be fixed-width and centered (done by the box with the black border) while the background of the red and green box should fill the whole width. I'm actually not quite sure if the way I've done it now is XHTML/CSS valid, but it works - at least in Firefox. In IE6, the green box expands to fit the whole blue box - how can I fix this in IE6 or find another solution to show it correctly in all browsers?

• Question regarding CGRectIntersectsRect and rotated rectangular image

  Hi guys, I've got a long rectangular image which is rotated at different kind of angles. However the frame of the rectangular image does not rotate along with the image and instead, the rotation causes the frame to to become larger to fit the rotated image. So when I used CGRectIntersectsRect, the collision detection is totally off because the other image colliding with the rectangular image will collide before it even reaches the visible area of the rect image. In case you don't really know what I'm talking about, have a look at the ascii drawing: normal rectangular image frame, O - pixels, |, – - frame |----------| |OOOOOOOOOO| |----------| after rotation |----------| |O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | |----------| I've read through some of the collision articles but all of them are talking about collision with a normal straight rectangle and what I really want is collision with a slanted image, preferably pixel collision detection. • Can I safely store UInt32 to NSUInteger?

Where's the difference between UInt32 and unsigned int? And I assume that an unsigned long is bigger than an unsigned int?

  Hello, I have requirement of selecting a portion of UIImage displayed on iPhone screen (for e.g. selecting the face from the image of some human being) using some rectangular type of frame. It means a rectangular type of frame can be moved across the image to place it at portion that we want. After placing it, I need to resize the frame in order to have that portion completely fit in the frame. Finally, the UIImage should be cropped so that I have a UIImage only displaying the portion that I selected using the frame. Please help me. Regards, Pratik

  Hi, I am trying to use jQuery to position an inpage div (Context-Menu) relative to a clicked tablerow on a webpage. This works fine until I add an offset with either "left" or "margin-left" to the outer container. Using padding-left works.... The relevant code is: $('#supermenu').position({ my: "left top", at: "left top", of: $(event.target).closest('tr'), collision: "fit" }); The caller looks like: <tr onclick="getMenu(event)"><td>.... What happens: The left margin is added "twice" to the X Offset, so the Menu is not aligned to the left border of the table but somewhere right of it. The offset from the border is exactly the offset from the outer container. Anybody can shed some light? Oliver

What I would really like is: memcached semantics (i.e. not reliable, just a cache) memcached api preferred (but not required) large in-memory first level cache (MRU) huge on-disk second level cache (main) evicted from on-disk cache at maximum storage using LRU or LFU proven implementation In searching for a solution I've found the following solutions but they all miss my marks in some way. Does anyone know of either: other options that I haven't considered a way to make memcachedb do evictions Already considered are: memcachedb best fit but doesn't do evictions: explicitly "not a cache" can't see any way to do evictions (either manual or automatic) tugela cache abandoned, no support don't want to recommend it to customers nmdb doesn't use memcache api new and unproven don't want to recommend it to customers

• Facebook graph api - delete like

  Hi there, I'm developing an app for Facebook in PHP, part of which lists the user's "likes". I would like to add a link next to each like so that the user can manage their likes by deleting them where they see fit. Facebook mentions this in their graph api docs: "You can delete a like by issuing a DELETE request to /POST_ID/likes (since likes don't have an ID)." But each like must have an id - how else would you delete it? Has anyone done this before, any help will be appreciated.
