• Improper output in SSH session on OSX using FreeSSHd on Windows with cygwin bash/sh shell

  I am testing out running an SSH server on a local Windows VM. I have installed FreeSSHd and set the command shell to "c:\cygwin\bin\sh --login -i" (bash as well) with "Use new console engine" unchecked. • How do I elevate privileges when running appcmd from a nant task?

  We are using a Windows 7 box as build server. As part of our continuous integration process I would like to stop and start an IIS 7 website. I have tried doing this from the command line using appcmd: appcmd start site "my website" However, this only works if I start the console window by choosing "Run as Administrator", so it won't work out-of-the-box from NAnt etc. How do I script appcmd to be run with elevated privileges (or am I going about this in the wrong way)?   I tried logging into my computer after an "ungraceful" shutdown due to a power cut.. I got prompted with a message stating the user profile service failed the login. After reading a k/b on Microsoft I managed to re-login to the "corrupt" account by making registery edits.. But the next step (After having the ability to logon) is a major concern for me.. Would the guys at superuser suggest: 1) Carry on using said account 2) Re-install Windows to eliminate the possible chance of a reoccouring problem 3) Migrate all user data over to a new account and with that being said above. I had to issue the command line: net user administrator /active:yes to activate the hidden adminstrator account, would it be recommended/secure to disable the account or leave it active?

• BAD DC transfering FSMO Roles to ADC

  I have a DC (FQDN:server.icmcpk.local) and an ADC (FQDN:file-server.icmcpk.local). Recently my DC is facing a bad sector problem so I changed the Operation Masters to file-server for all five roles. but when ever i turn off the OLD DC the file-server also stops wroking with AD and GPMC further i m also unable to join any other computer to this domain. For Test purpose i also added a new ADC (FQDN:wds-server.icmcpk.local) but no succes with the old DC off i had to turn the old DC on and then joined it. I m attaching the Dcdiags for all three servers. • Trouble downloading a file due to lack of permission

  After downloading this file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/315/hon/hon_update.exe before it actually copies to my computer I get this error: File Access Denied <title of box> You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file. Within this box are to buttons: Try Again or Cancel I have searched other similar "permission" type questions, but they seem to all refer to existing files or folders. How do I give permission to a file which doesn't exist yet? (since it is in the process of downloading and hasn't finally copied over yet) I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I would be happy to supply any other information to help clarify.

• VPN - Remote Desktop Connection

  I've set up a VPN connection to my work network on my home PC - running Windows 7 It connects fine. Once connected, I can ping machines that are on my work network using my home pc, however, if I try to RDP to them, it doesn't connect... It seems to initially connect, It asks me for the logon user / password, and when I set them, and click OK, it gets stuck on a screen saying: "Securing Remote Connection" Eventually it pops up saying "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem persists, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator" I know this computer is configured to allow remote connections etc... (and I've tried it with several different machines on the remote network) Any ideas what i've set wrong?

  I'm mostly a system administrator and I don't directly work with databases other than installing them, setting up accounts, granting privileges, and so on. I realized that if The Boss walked up to me and asked, "What is a relational database?" I probably couldn't give a satisfactory answer... I'd maybe mumble something about data being stored and organized by categories which you can query with a special programing language (i.e., SQL). So could someone give a good "Boss Answer" for what a relational database is? And maybe how its different than just storing data on a file server? Bonus points for clever but accessible analogies and explaining tables, columns, records and fields. • Communicator Messages not being saved to Outlook due to Outlook Integration error

  For the most part my Office Communicator appears to be configured correctly. I can login to my work account and see the work contact list. Outlook is working perfectly had a weird profile problem initially but that was fixed. Unfortunately, even though I have set the setting that says: Save my instant message conversations in the Outlook Conversation History folder. My conversations have stopped saving to the Outlook Conversation History folder. Also I have a yellow warning message on top of the server icon next to the status field. When I hover or click on the message, it says there is an Outlook Integration Error. The administrator is having trouble figuring out what is causing it. What can cause Outlook Integration Errors in Communicator and how do I go about trouble shooting them?

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running IIS7.5 with Medium Trust configured for ASP.NET. When I have the website running from local content (e.g.: c:\inetpub\wwwroot) everything works fine. When I change IIS to use a UNC path for the content (e.g.: \\computer\wwwroot) I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I'm trying to figure out why ASP.NET/IIS would allow for the SQL call when using local content but not when using a UNC path. Any ideas what I need to do to use a UNC path from IIS7 properly?

  Scenario: blank win2008 r2 install the goal was to have a couple of sites running with isolated pool and dedicated users A new folder for a new website - c:\web\siteA\wwwroot, with the app (asp.net) deployed there in the /bin folder created a user named "appuser" and added it to the IIS_USERS group gave the website folder read and execute permissions for IIS_USERS and the appuser created the IIS site. set the app=pool identity to the appuser now I'm getting YSOD telling me that the trust-level is too low - SecurityException: That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers Added <trust level="Full" /> on the web-config, did not help changing the app-pool user to Administrator makes the site run Setting "anonymous user identity" to either IUSR or the app pool identity makes no difference any idea? is there a "step by step" howto guide for setting up users for isolated app pools on IIS7.5?

• Windows 2008 and Truecrypt: can't access shared folder called "media"

  On my Windows 2008 system, I've attached an external USB drive that's encrypted using Truecrypt. Once I mounted the Truecrypt drive, I share some of the directories from that drive using Windows file sharing. I tried sharing a folder called "media" and when I try to access that folder from a Vista client on my LAN via \myserver\media, I get this error: \myserver\media is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. An unexpected network error occurred. If I share the folder media under some name such as fizzbuzz then I can access \myserver\fizzbuzz w/o any errors. Any clues as to why this is happening?   I created an ASP.net MVC developed web application and I am trying to set up IIS. The Error: Http error 500.19, error code 0x80070005, Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions, config file: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\BudgetManagerMain\BudgetManager\web.config If I set the AppPool to use 'administrator' i have no problems and can access the site just fine. If i set to NETWORK SERVICE (or anything else including self-created admin or non-admin user accounts), i get the above error. Things I have tried: identity for Application pool named 'test' is 'NetworkService' Set full access privs for wwwroot and all children files/folders verified effective permissions and NETWORK SERVICE has full access. Authentication on my site is set for anonymous and running under Application Pool Identity I do not have any physical path credentials set on the website confirmed website is set to run under the application pool named 'test' using Process Monitor, here is a summary of what i found on the ACCESS DENIED event EVENT TAB: Class: File System Operation: CreateFile Result: Access Denied Path: ..\web.config Desired Access: Generic Read Disposition: Open Options: Sybnchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory file Attributes: N ShareMode: Read AllocaitonSize: n/a PROCESS TAB ...lots of stuff that seems irrelevant User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

• Remote Desktop Client Crashes following domain join

  I recently joined my laptop to our windows domain and now the remote desktop client crashes when i try and connect to any machine. It works if I run as administrator but not ordinarily. The domain join migrated my local profile to the domain profile which i think is where the problem lies. I'm guessing its a permission thing as I had a similar problem with dropbox and had to delete reg keys and reinstall. I can't figure out how to fix this problem though. • How can I connect to my ACT database to export data?

  I am trying to export data from an MSSQL server that ACT uses. It is ACT 2005. I have tried tons of different things, from trying to starting the MSSQL server in single user mode (still can't login), I have tried copying the mdf files from it and putting it on another server (it complains about having the same name as another database for master.mdf and almost every other file), I have tried putting Administrator in the group that the MSSQL instance runs under, and nothing seems to work! Can anybody with experience with this help me out? Thanks!

• Encrypted passwords for better security on server

  Hi, I use wordpress and other CMS's and all these have plain text passwords in their config files e.g. in wp-config.php I wonder is this the normal way an administrator would protect security? I realise its possible to move the wp-config outside of the root web directory, but still if the server itself is compromised, its possible to find the wp-config file and the password inside, then the system is comprimised. Is there a way to encrypt all passwords on the system, so that in the web applications config files it uses the encrypted pass and not just plain text? Is there a sensible way of keeping plain-text passwords off the server? PS i use linux vps ubuntu servers Cheers Ke

• How to set password for phpMyAdmin with default install of WAMP2?

  I just installed it fresh, previously there would be no password at all and I'd be prompted to set one for security purposes, this time I'm just hit with an error: "Cannot connect: invalid settings. phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server." I've changed nothing, but I did install over the top of an older version of WAMP2. That older install did not have a root password. Please don't hit me, but if there's a text fie I can update somewhere instead of getting a cmd line action wrong... I'd really like to be pointed in that direction. I've just tried editing 'my.ini' and uncommented the password line out, so password is blank, but no luck. I don't mind setting a password and such, but right now I just want to get up and running, password or no.

  I'm trying to use role based security plugin in Jenkins, but i'm not sue i am using it right. I've decided to go with jenkin's own user database as a security realm instead of LDAP. i'm adding the users one by one. Now in the Assign Roles screen, i have global roles like administrator, read only etc... and i have project specific roles like prod_a_developer, prod_b_developer... For each user, do i have to both assign one of the global roles for him and also assign a specific project role ? Also, how do i assign a user to a group ? instead of assigning each user a global role i want to assign a group a global role. not so trivial, Can someone please help me ? Thanks.

  I have been asked to take a look at some access logs for an Apcahe2 web server running on Ubuntu. I have been told by the administrator of the machine that my login has "admin" access yet I cannot seem to copy the access logs from Apache2 to my local machine via FTP for analysis. I figure one of two things is happening ... I don't really have full admin access Some other process (perhaps Apache2) has control of the log files and won't let me copy them. How can I tell if I truly have admin access? What type of access do I need to request? Root access? Something else? Should I be able to copy these log files with admin access?

• New event log nowhere to be found after creating in PowerShell

  Through PowerShell, I am attempting to create a new event log and write a test entry to it, but it is not showing up the Event Viewer. This is the command I'm using to create a new event log: new-eventlog -logname TestLog -source TestLog And to write a new event to it: write-eventlog TestLog -source TestLog -eventid 12345 -message "Test message" After running the first command, there is no "TestLog" log in the event viewer anywhere, and I would expect it to show up in the Applications and Services Logs section. After running the second command, same result. However, I am seeing a registry key for the log at HKLM\SYSTEM\services\eventlog\TestLog. Just not seeing anything in the event viewer. So, 2 questions: When should I be seeing the event log? After it gets created or after I write the first event to it? And, more importantly, why am I not seeing it at all? I'm using Windows Server 2008R2, and am logged in and running the PS as an administrator. Thanks.

  I have this idea, just want to see if it is implementable or not. Let say I have my office laptop, with no administrator privileges, using example domain ASDF Can I set at my home, another AD server (Microsoft or Samba 4), that have the same domain ASDF as my office laptop. Then I set an administrative user in my own AD server. Theoretically, is it possible to authenticate my office laptop with my own AD? If the above is possible, theoretically, is it possible to gain administrative privileges also with this setup? Thanks.
