• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • Troubleshoot Perl module installation on Mac OS X

  I'm trying to install the Perl module Set::IntervalTree on Mac OS X. I recently installed it today on an Ubuntu box with no problem. I simply started cpan, entered install Set:IntervalTree, and it all worked out. However, the installation failed on Mac OS X--it spits out a huge list of compiler errors (below). How would I troubleshoot this. • Mac OS X Server Configure DHCP Options 66 and 67

  I need to configure Mountain Lion (10.8.2) OS X Server BOOTP to provide DHCP options 66 and 67 to provide PXE booting for PCs on my network. I have tried following the bootpd MAN pages, but they are not specific enough. I have also read conflicting information on the net, but nothing definitive for Mountain Lion DHCP. From bootpd man page: bootpd has a built-in type conversion table for many more options, mostly those specified in RFC 2132, and will try to convert from whatever type the option appears in the property list to the binary, packet format. For example, if bootpd knows that the type of the option is an IP address or list of IP addresses, it converts from the string form of the IP address to the binary, network byte order numeric value. If the type of the option is a numeric value, it converts from string, integer, or boolean, to the proper sized, network byte-order numeric value. Regardless of whether bootpd knows the type of the option or not, you can always specify the DHCP option using the data property list type <key>dhcp_option_128</key> <data> AAqV1Tzo </data> My TFTP server is 172.16.152.20 and the bootfile is pxelinux.0 I have edited /etc/bootpd.plist and added the following to the subnet dict: <key>dhcp_option_66</key> <data> LW4gLWUgrBCYFAo= </data> <key>dhcp_option_67</key> <data> LW4gLWUgcHhlbGludXguMAo= </data> According to the man page, the data elements are supposed to be Base64 encoded, but no matter what I try, I cannot get PXE clients to boot. I have tried encoding 172.16.152.20 using various methods: echo "172.16.152.20" | openssl enc -base64 returns MTcyLjE2LjE1Mi4yMAo= DHCP Option Code Utility (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Internet-Utilities/DHCP-Option-Code-Utility.shtml) generating a string from 172.16.152.20 yields: LW4gLWUgMTcyLjE2LjE1Mi4yMAo= (used in the above example) DHCP Option Code Utility generating an IP Addresss from 172.16.152.20 yields: LW4gLWUgrBCYFAo= Encoding pxelinux.0 with the above methods likewise yields different encodings. • PHP & MySQL on Mac OS X: Access denied for GUI user

  Hey! This question was first posted to Stack Overflow, but as it is perhaps just as much a server issue I though it might be just as well to post it here also. I have just installed and configured Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin on my Macbook in order to have a local development environment. But after I moved one of my projects over to the local server I get a weird MySQL error from one of my calls to mysql_query(): Access denied for user '_securityagent'@'localhost' (using password: NO) First of all, the query I'm sending to MySQL is all valid, and I've even testet it through phpMyAdmin with perfect result. Secondly, the error message only happens here while I have at least 4 other mysql connections and queries per page. This call to mysql_query() happens at the end of a really long function that handles data for newly created or modified articles. This basically what it does: Collect all the data from article form (title, content, dates, etc..) Validate collected data Connect to database Dynamically build SQL query based on validated article data Send query to database before closing the connection Pretty basic, I know. I did not recognize the username "_securityagent" so after a quick search I came across this from and article at Apple's Developer Connection talking about some random bug: Mac OS X's security infrastructure gets around this problem by running its GUI code as a special user, "_securityagent". Then I tried put a var_dump() on all variables used in the mysql_connect() call, and every time it returns the correct values (where username is not "_securityagent" of course). Thus I'm wondering if anyone has any idea why 'securityagent' is trying to connect to my database - and how I can keep this error from occurring when I call mysql_query(). Update: Here is the exact code I'm using to connect to the database.   I've recently purchased an Apple iMac. Unfortunately, enabling Apache and PHP has thrown up some problems. I enabled Mac's built-in Web Sharing through System Preferences, at which point I got an output and could add HTML files to my user directory. However, PHP files were being displayed rather than interpreted. I then discovered this is because PHP isn't enabled by default on Mac's Apache set-up. • OS X server large scale storage and backup

  I really hope this question doesn't come across as trolling or asking for buying advice. It's not intended. I've just started working for a small ad agency (40 employees). I actually quit being a system administrator a few years ago (too stressful!), but the company we're currently outsourcing our IT stuff to is doing such a bad job that I've felt compelled to get involved and do what I can to improve things. At the moment, all the company's data is stored on an 8TB external firewire drive attached to a Mac Mini running OS X Server 10.6, which provides filesharing (using AFP) for the whole company. There is a single backup drive, which is actually a caddy containing two 3TB hard drives arranged in RAID 0 (arrggghhhh!), which someone brings in as and when and copies over all the data using Carbon Copy Cloner. That's the entirety of the infrastructure, and the whole backup and restore strategy. I've been having sleepless nights. I've just started augmenting the backup process with FreeBSD, ZFS, sparse bundles and snapshot sends to get everything offsite. I think this is a workable behind the scenes solution, but for people's day to day use I'm struggling. Given the quantity and importance of the data, I think we should really be looking towards enterprise level storage solutions, high availability and so on, but the whole company is all Mac all the time, and I cannot find equipment that will do what we need. No more Xserve; no rack storage; no large scale storage at all apart from that Pegasus R6 that doesn't seem all that great; the Mac Pro has fibre channel, but it's not a real server and it's ludicrously expensive; Xsan looks like it's on the way out; things like heartbeatd and failoverd have apparently been removed from Lion Server; the new Mac Mini only has thunderbolt which severely limits our choices; the list goes on and on. I'm really, really not trying to troll here. I love Macs, but I just genuinely don't know where I'm supposed to look for server stuff. I have considered Linux or FreeBSD and netatalk for serving files with all the server-y goodness those OSes bring, but some the things I've read make me wonder if it's really the way to go. Also, in my own (admittedly quite cursory) experiments with it, I've struggled to get decent transfer speeds. I guess there's also the possibility of switching everyone off AFP and making them use SMB or NFS, but I understand that this can cause big problems with resource forks and file locks. I figure there must be plenty of all Mac companies out there. If you're the sysadmin at one, what do you use? Any suggestions very gratefully received.

• My network drive disappears from Mac OS Finder

  I have recently bought a Netgear WNDR3800 router to use it in my home network. But just the same day I installed it, I noticed a strange behaviour of Finder and iTunes. Let me explain it further. There is a Synology DS111 NAS attached to that router and two Macs with Mac OS X Lion. One of them is connected by a cable and the second one wirelessly. Before I changed my router to the new one I mentioned above, Finder always used to display my NAS on its sidebar. So I could just click its network name to access shared folders existing on it. But after I installed WNDR3800, I can no longer access the NAS that way. It is no longer displayed. I always have to mount it manually by typing its IP address using the Finder's 'connect to server' option. The same NAS supports TimeMachine backups and has an inbuilt DLNA server. And the same situation here. I can't perform a backup because my NAS is no longer accessible in TimeMachine preferences. iTunes does not display it as well (as a multimedia server) even though it used to before I installed that router. What's important, everything works fine for a couple of minutes after I restart the router or the NAS. Or even when I change the NAS's IP address it becomes accessible again in Finder, TimeMachine and iTunes, but only for some time. Both the Mac computers I mentioned behave the same way. And all those issues have been taking place sice I installed that new router. Before I did that, everything had worked fine. My old router was Netgear WGR614v10. Would you be so kind to tell me what you think could possibly be the reason of that behaviour? What settings of the router should I look closer at? I'm not a network specialist, but is it possible that some network packets are blocked for some reason? I will be grateful for any clues you give me. Thank you.

• How do you implement a good profanity filter?

  Many of us need to deal with user input, search queries, and situations where the input text can potentially contain profanity or undesirable language. Oftentimes this needs to be filtered out. Where can one find a good list of swear words in various languages and dialects? Are there APIs available to sources that contain good lists? Or maybe an API that simply says "yes this is clean" or "no this is dirty" with some parameters? What are some good methods for catching folks trying to trick the system, like a$$, azz, or a55? Bonus points if you offer solutions for PHP. :) Edit: Response to answers that say simply avoid the programmatic issue: I think there is a place for this kind of filter when, for instance, a user can use public image search to find pictures that get added to a sensitive community pool. If they can search for "penis", then they will likely get many pictures of, yep. If we don't want pictures of that, then preventing the word as a search term is a good gatekeeper, though admittedly not a foolproof method. Getting the list of words in the first place is the real question. So I'm really referring to a way to figure out of a single token is dirty or not and then simply disallow it. I'd not bother preventing a sentiment like the totally hilarious "long necked giraffe" reference. Nothing you can do there. :)

• Need help finding a good curriculum/methodology for self-teaching to program from scratch

  My friend and I have both dedicated ourselves to learning the essentials of programming by June of this year from nearly no programming experience. I have done some research and have come to the conclusion that using the Python language will be the best for us, but I am open to suggestions with good reasoning behind them. My motives for learning programming are: Potential Career Path to be able to create programs that can: solve problems; entertain, i.e. useful applications and games. Online college lectures + book (which I am willing to purchase) sounds like a good combination, but I do not know which would be most suitable for me. tl;dr: What I would like to find from the excellent people here is the following: a good, potentially best, programming course and/or book that is well structured and uses good pedagogy so that a person dedicated to learn programming may do so by following its curriculum (or use it to develop a curriculum) over the course of a few months. Thanks! (I apologize if this type of question is not considered proper etiquette, but I haven't found a consensus on this, and would like some guidance beyond the research I've already done)

I did a decent amount of C++ in my Sophomore year and in my free time before that but I feel that my general knowledge of C++/.net is very lacking for the opportunities that are now coming my way. Can anyone recommend a good book that could help me get up too speed? I feel I do not need a very basic introduction to C++ but something that covers the fundamentals of .net would be good for me. So basically what I need is a book or books that would be good for a .net novice and a C++ developer who is just beyond novice.   I have recently started to feel that I need to greatly improve my C++ skills especially in the realm of .net. I graduated from a good four year university with a degree in computer science about 9 months ago and I have since been doing full time contract work for a small software company in my local area. Most of my work has been done using Java/lisp/cocoa/XML and before that most of my programming in my senior year was in java/C#. • A good php framework in 2012

  I've done a lot of googling around this, and practically all of the answers I find are pre 2011, and are answered in the usual, here are the 5 most popular frameworks... So I'd like to update this topic for 2012, I'm going to build a web application with a pretty complex back-end system driving it, and I'd like to use a framework so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. My application will be hugely user based, so I would appreciate a built in authentication/validation system. (When this is missing it takes me a good 2 weeks of intense and frivolous research to try to pick the "best" one (I don't want to roll my own, I don't think I'd do a better job than what's out there). I've looked into a tried a few, so I'll give you what I like and don't like, but I don't want to bias answers too much. I don't like: Frameworks that auto-generate bloated code. If they have the feature, fine, but if I have to use it, I get frustrated. Backwards compatibility with php4, eww. I don't need backwards compatibility at all. I like: Getting up and running quickly (but without all the auto-generation bogus), what I mean by this is that all the essentials are there, so I don't have to come to a grinding halt to research what the best 3rd party plugin is to get the feature I need. Thorough documentation, good tutorials. Good presentation of these materials. Please explain why your framework suggestion is good, don't just give the name of a framework without any justification.   Is Mac OS X developed on a licensed Unix or is it a Unix-like clone that, unlike Linux, conforms to Unix specification well enough to be registered as a Unix OS. Not until Leopard, Mac OS X did not gain the Unix certification. But in Leopard, Terminal still print: GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin10.0) But GNU is GNU's not Unix, and Mac OS X is registered as Unix. That gets me confused whether OS X is unix or unix-like. In other words, is OS X written on top of Unix or a re-write of Unix that is as Unix as it can possible be. • Windows 7 - Wireless Signal Good - Internet Often Says Limited or No Activity

  Hi - I have a New Dell Studio XPS latop that I hooked up in early January of 2010. The Dell Studio XPS laptop is connected to my wireless router (Belkin Wireless N). The router was purchased in Februaru of 2010 because I thought my router was bad (A D-Link router). Comcast is my ISP. Everyday, at random times, the internet will have a good signal (according to the little Win 7 icon on the taskbar) but I will receive a message saying limited or no internet access and I cannot access the internet. I have the internet setup to automatically get an IP and I did the IPCONFIG release / renew but with no success. I even had a WiFi enabled Blackberry right next to my computer and whenever the computer loses an WiFi connection, so does the Blackberry. The router isnt't bad, because the old router did the same thing - giving me limited or no internet access while working sometimes. I also tried using two other laptops in same physical position as my Dell Studio XPS laptop and they have the same problem. I am going crazy trying to figure this out as I have called the Router Company (Belkin), my ISP (Comcast), and my computer maker (Dell). Can anyone offer some suggestions and I can try them as we work through this and maybe one of the suggestion will be right one. Thanks in advance for even reading my problem. I searched for a problem similar to mine on the internet, but I have not been able to keep a steady internet connection. (Side note - I used to have an IBM thinkpad laptop and D - Link router and for years that wireless connection worked FLAWLESSLY, with the same physical set up - the laptop in my bedroom, and the router in the basement.)

• Auto-archive IMAP mail folders on OS X

  Hi, I am trying to achieve the following. Download all messages from mail server(and remove downloaded messages from server). Downloaded messages should be in a local mailbox preserving folder structure as was defined on server. The download process should be automatic and shouldn't create duplicates. I am on OSX and looking for solutions using Apple Mail or Thunderbird or similar. So far I have found POP is not the way to go (as it looses folder structure and potentially can cause duplicates). The solution described here seems very good but isn't yet available for thunderbird or apple mail. http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/auto_archive_and_keep_folder_structure. The other alternative is outlook which has auto archive which is paid and I think exports to pst instead of the more common mbox format. Yet another alternative is http://www.pop4.org/ which adds support for folder management to POP. Which I don't think is going to become usable soon. Any other better solutions.? Thank you

• Is it ever good to share a userid?

  On Un*x, Is it ever a good idea to have one userid that many different people log into when they do stuff? Often I'm installing software or something on a Linux or BSD system. I've developed software for 24 years now, so I know how to make the machine do what I want, but I've never had responsibility for maintaining a multi-user installation where anyone really cared about security. So my opinions feel untested. Now I'm at a company where there's a server that many people log into with a single userid and do stuff. I'm installing some software on it. It's not really a public-facing server, and is only accessible via VPN, but it's used by many people nonetheless, to run tests on custom software, things like that. It's a staging server. I'm thinking that at the very least, using a single user obscures an audit trail, and that's bad. And it's just inelegant, because people don't have their own spaces on the server. But then again, with more userids, maybe there's a greater chance that one can be compromised, allowing attackers to gain access. ?

• How to restore broken Ethernet functionality on Mac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger)

  I had a disk error that rendered my Mac unbootable. I repaired it with Tech Tool 4, but now networking does not work. Network Preferences reports that my Ethernet cable is unplugged. I know this is bogus because when I boot from an emergency partition, networking works correctly. Furthermore, wireless networking is also broken, which I tested with a known-good Wi-Fi dongle. Whenever I try to change Network Port Configurations by creating a New or Renaming an existing one, example: I get this message in the console: Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! In sets of two as shown. When I try to invoke the Network Diagnostics app, it immediately crashes. My first thought is to reinstall Tiger with the Archive and Install method so I don't have to reinstall all my applications but I have lost my Tiger installer disk. My next thought is to buy Leopard for $107 on Amazon. If there is any way I can just repair my Tiger install I would be happy to save that money, though. This is not my main machine and I am loathe to put more money into it. How can I recover my network functionality? UPDATE: I found my Tiger install disk and tried an Archive and Install. It failed with an unhelpful error message along the lines of "Can't install, try again". I tried again but had the same error. My guess is, some corrupt or missing file in my User folder is preventing migration. I have a backup created with Super Duper that is a bit out of date but will startup the machine (with functional networking). I would love to just copy over the file(s) that got messed up but I don't even know where to look. What is the likely location of the System files that would cause the aforementioned symptoms?

• Dedicated server with a lot of storage and good support - and cost-effective

  Hello, I am from Germany and looking for a dedicated server located in the US with a lot of storage: 750 - 1500 GB. CPU speed and amount of memory are secondary, the server will host large amounts of media files via http and ftp - the basic task is to help people exchange media files. In Germany, there are some good offers, like "Root Server EQ6" at www.hetzner.de. For example, that company provides support of high quality, and their plans are very cost-effective. The plan mentioned above costs about $90 per month and provides two 1500 GB SATA-II HDDs (Software-RAID 1). In the US, I found (amongst others) Go Daddy and rackspace. Go Daddy offers some "Storage Monster" plans that include 2 x 1,000 GB hard drives for about $180 per month - already twice as much as Hetzner above. However, I found some blog and forum entries that complain about the support provided by Go Daddy. Rackspace seems to provide decent support, but they are very "upscale". Their dedicated servers are customizable and start at $419 - thus, about 4.5 times as much as Hetzner. Can anybody recommend a solution / plan that is comparable to the one by Hetzner? Or are prices for dedicated servers in general much higher than in Germany? Regards, Martin

• What is a good WordPress theme for long Objective-C code samples [closed]

  As some of you iPhone developers know, Objective-C can be a verbose language. Long, descriptive variable and method names are the norm. I'm not complaining, it makes code easier to read and code completion makes it easy to type. But damn! Check out this method name for getting a cell in a table view: -(UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath; I have a WordPress blog where I publish my code samples as I'm learning the language. One thing I hate on other blogs is how the code won't fit in a column without that scroll bar or without wrapping around. It really made it hard for me to read and comprehend method names back when I was a super-noob (six months ago). Right now I use the clean-looking Fazyvo 1.0 theme by noonnoo. I love the look of it but the columns are just too narrow and it doesn't have support for wider ones. I could hand-modify it but then I'd have to maintain/redo those changes every time I updated it. Instead, I'm looking for a nice theme that has width control built-in and looks good at larger font sizes. Can anyone help? Note: I use WP-CodeBox for code syntax highlighting.

• Good process/software for organizing photos past/present

  So I have tons of photos taken all the time. I have a lot from years past that I never went through (meaning deleting duplicates, etc). I've got a new pc with windows 7, and I'm wondering what a good process is to organize those photos. They're in folders that have really no meaning (it used to be people would put them in a folder wherever, even the desktop or somewhere else, not just the My Pictures folder). I'm going to keep all pictures in the "My Pictures" folder from now on. I've used Picasa from g=Google, and it works great. Is this the recommended free software for this? What process do I use to move the old pictures over in to new "organized" folders? Lately in Picasa when I import off my camera card, I would just select something that names the folder after the date it was taken. Is this advised? Just give me ideas on how to stay organized with photos. Should I tag them also? Should I rename the file names? Keep in mind I have over 16,000 photos I'll have to go through, so it can't be anything to thorough.

  I have 2 cisco rv180 VPN router. These routers are giving me lots of problems. The webpages wont load correctly, slow response to load webpages plus other many issues. I have several cases pending with cisco. I give up on these routers. I would like to know if you guys can recommend me a reliable router for our 3 branches (NY - main, SC and FL). • Recommendations for good Unix MTA / groupware solutions? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Exchange server replacement that runs on Linux I'm setting up a Debian server, and one of the things I need on it is an MTA. I don't want to use something like Exim or Postfix because I want something that ties in SMTP, POP3, and IMAP all in one (a la Microsoft Exchange). Most MTAs also seem to be hellishly difficult to configure. Try and read the Exim documentation; you could do a university degree on it (I'm not kidding). When you can get an HTTP server like Cherokee which is easy to configure and has a nice web interface, do MTAs or groupware solutions need to be that hard? I'm aware that some people think "the Unix way" is to have lots of different interacting pieces of software (like maybe an SMTP MTA, POP3 service, webmail service, and overarching manager to tie them all together), but I think this is a situation where that just makes things a lot harder to deal with and one large software suite fits in much more nicely. So, I'm looking for good open source software suites that will run on Debian that: Combine (at least) SMTP, POP3, and IMAP Are easy(ish) to configure Have a nice configuration web interface or GUI Are not defunct projects I don't mind if it's groupware and offers calendaring too, but I would only be using the e-mail functionality for now. Another nice-to-have would be built-in webmail (if we're combining a bunch of functionality, why not?) Note however that I do NOT need Outlook support. I am not really looking for an "Exchange replacement drop-in". The suites I've found so far that seem to match the above criteria (and have appropriate licenses) are Citadel, Kolab, and Zimbra. I'd appreciate anyone who has experience with any of these giving me the pros and cons of them, such as how easy they are to configure and what their performance is like. I'd also appreciate any other suggestions for solutions that fulfil my criteria that I may have missed out.
