  • Navigating to rootViewController of non-visible UINavigationController CRASH

    - by Bertie
    First off I'n not sure if this is exactly the issue... but it appears to be central to the problem. There are vast gaps in what I know and this may be something very obvious. I have a split view controller with various Master and Detail Views. From one 'menu' branch I want to return to the rootView of both the Master & Detail Navigation Controllers when the user taps a 'Done' button. Initially I had the button positioned on the navigation bar of the master view. This is the code I was using: - (IBAction)doneClicked:(id)sender { UINavigationController *detailNav = [self.splitViewController.viewControllers objectAtIndex:1]; NSArray *allDetailViewControllers = detailNav.viewControllers; HomePage *destinationDetailVC = [allDetailViewControllers objectAtIndex:0]; destinationDetailVC.splitViewBarButtonItem = self.splitViewButton; [detailNav popToRootViewControllerAnimated:NO]; [self.navigationController popToRootViewControllerAnimated:NO]; } That works fine but if the device is in portrait mode it means the user has to open the menus to access the button. So I decided to put the 'Done' button onto the detail view NavBar instead. Using a delegate declared in the detailVC and adopted by the masterVC I am now using this method: - (void)theUserClickedDoneInTheDetailView:(DetailVC *)controller withButton:(UIBarButtonItem *)splitViewButton { UINavigationController *detailNav = [self.splitViewController.viewControllers objectAtIndex:1]; NSArray *allDetailViewControllers = detailNav.viewControllers; HomePage *destinationDetailVC = [allDetailViewControllers objectAtIndex:0]; destinationDetailVC.splitViewBarButtonItem = splitViewButton; [detailNav popToRootViewControllerAnimated: NO]; [self.navigationController popToRootViewControllerAnimated:NO]; } Both methods are in the MasterVC.m file The only difference between the two is that on is passed a UIBarButtonItem to use and the other has already had it passed when it is set in the detail view. That seems to be working because I do get a button. When the device is in Landscape mode both methods work fine. All behaviour as expected. When the device is in Portrait the first method still works fine. The second appears to work fine and the detail view is the rootView, the button for the menus is there BUT, as soon as I turn the device to landscape it crashes. The only thing I can think of is that it is because the masterView is hidden. Can anyone help...?

  • What UIKit elements can be used to replicate the App Store/iTunes Store paged grid?

    - by user350523
    I'm new to Cocoa Touch, so this might be pretty easy, but I can't seem to figure out what UIKit elements were used to create a grid like this? Is this simply a UITableView with a pagination controller? If so, how'd they style it like this? Thanks! PS: I'm not allowed to post images yet, i guess. hopefully the link works... http://img576.imageshack.us/img576/8523/screenshot20100525at941.png

  • Access problem with NSMutableArray

    - by pbcoder
    Hi, my problem is that I can't access my NSMutableArray in - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath {}. I create my NSMutableArray here: nodes = [xmlDoc nodesForXPath:@"/xml/items/item/short_desc" error:nil]; if (nodes != nil && [nodes count] >= 1) { for (int i = 0; i < [nodes count]; i++) { CXMLElement *resultElement = [nodes objectAtIndex:i]; result = [[[[resultElement attributeForName:@"data"] stringValue] copy] autorelease]; [short_desc addObject:result]; } } and I can print out the content of short_desc everywhere with: NSLog([short_desc objectAtIndex:0]); but not in: - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { ..... NSString *date = [name objectAtIndex:0]; labelDate.text = date; ..... return cell;} if I use: - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { ..... NSString *date = @"text..."; labelDate.text = date; ..... return cell;} it works correctly. ANY SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM???

  • Starting a new Xcode project from a template vs. a blank project

    - by Dr Dork
    I sometimes find it's easier to create a new project from scratch in other IDEs simply because its often more difficult to understand and tweak the generated template code than it is to write the code you need from scratch. Do seasoned iPhone developers still use templates when creating new projects? How difficult is it to add functionality to a template project that isn't initially included in the template? For example, if I don't check the "Use Core Data" option when creating a new project, how difficult does that make it to use Core Data later on if I changed my mind?

But my apps gets crashed with error at console : *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[_UIAppearance setTitleTextAttributes:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x79f5790' *** First throw call stack: Not sure, why i am getting a crash. • iOS Development: Can I store an array of integers in a Core Data object without creating a new table to represent the array?

    - by BeachRunnerJoe
    Hello. I'm using Core Data and I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to store an array of integers in one of my Core Data entities. Currently, my entities contain various arrays of objects that are more complex than a single number, so it makes sense to represent those arrays as tables in my DB and attach them using relationships. If I want to store a simple array of integers, do I need to create a new table with a single column and attach it using a one-to-many relationship? Or is there a more simple way? Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

  • iOS Development: How can I encapsulate a string in an NSData object?

    - by BeachRunnerJoe
    Hello. I'm building a multiplayer game on the iPhone and I need to send string data to the other players in the game. To do that, I need to encapsulate my NSString* string data in an NSData object somehow. Here's an example of how my code is structured... typedef struct { PACKETTYPE packetType; ??? stringToSend; //<---not sure how to store this } StringPacket; StringPacket msg; msg.packetType = STRING_PACKET; msg.stringToSend = ... // <---not sure what to do here NSData *packet = [NSData dataWithBytes:&msg length:sizeof(StringPacket)]; So my question is, if StringPacket is a struct defined in my header, what type should the stringToSend property be so that I can easily call the dataWithBytes method of NSData to encapsulate the packet data in an NSData object? Thanks for your wisdom!

    Hello All, I have scoured the internet looking for a good tutorial or posting about having a UITableView populated with a UITextField in each cell for data entry. I want to keep track of each UITextField and the text written within it while scrolling. The tableView will be sectioned. I have been using a custom UITableViewCell but I'm open to any method. Also, is it possible to use the textFields as ivars? If any of you could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

All that I have done so far is an IBAction for the button to save the image (the button resides in the top right of the navigation bar. • Adding the scrollview created by photoscroller to a subview

    - by wierddemon
    I'm trying to modify Apple's PhotoScroller example to make the scrollview that is created into a subview instead of it being a view that takes up the entire screen. Any ideas on how this can be accomplished? - (void)loadView { // Step 1: make the outer paging scroll view CGRect pagingScrollViewFrame = [self frameForPagingScrollView]; pagingScrollView = [[UIScrollView alloc] initWithFrame:pagingScrollViewFrame]; pagingScrollView.pagingEnabled = YES; pagingScrollView.backgroundColor = [UIColor blackColor]; pagingScrollView.showsVerticalScrollIndicator = NO; pagingScrollView.showsHorizontalScrollIndicator = NO; pagingScrollView.contentSize = [self contentSizeForPagingScrollView]; pagingScrollView.delegate = self; // When I do this it fails [self.view addSubview:pagingScrollView]; // Step 2: prepare to tile content recycledPages = [[NSMutableSet alloc] init]; visiblePages = [[NSMutableSet alloc] init]; [self tilePages]; }

Afree both of these steps, I have to reload my scrollview. Can I do the same task by adding observer, so that it will automatically reload when any action done on button, and if yes then how?

  • How to practice object oriented programming?

    - by user1620696
    I've always programmed in procedural languages and currently I'm moving towards object orientation. The main problem I've faced is that I can't see a way to practice object orientation in an effective way. I'll explain my point. When I've learned PHP and C it was pretty easy to practice: it was just matter of choosing something and thinking about an algorithm for that thing. In PHP for example, it was matter os sitting down and thinking: "well, just to practice, let me build one application with an administration area where people can add products". This was pretty easy, it was matter of thinking of an algorithm to register some user, to login the user, and to add the products. Combining these with PHP features, it was a good way to practice. Now, in object orientation we have lots of additional things. It's not just a matter of thinking about an algorithm, but analysing requirements deeper, writing use cases, figuring out class diagrams, properties and methods, setting up dependency injection and lots of things. The main point is that in the way I've been learning object orientation it seems that a good design is crucial, while in procedural languages one vague idea was enough. I'm not saying that in procedural languages we can write good software without design, just that for sake of practicing it is feasible, while in object orientation it seems not feasible to go without a good design, even for practicing. This seems to be a problem, because if each time I'm going to practice I need to figure out tons of requirements, use cases and so on, it seems to become not a good way to become better at object orientation, because this requires me to have one whole idea for an app everytime I'm going to practice. Because of that, what's a good way to practice object orientation?

  • Gallery items become off-center when switching into landscape orientation.

    - by Sandile
    Hey Guys, Thanks for your time. I'm writing an application for android 2.2 and I'm using a gallery to circulate through a list of images that the user can then click to navigate other portions of the application. In portrait orientation, everything is kosher: the images are displaying correctly (completely in the center of the screen as I intended); however, in landscape orientation, all the images in the gallery are strangely displaced a fixed distance to the left of the center of the screen. I've been researching this issue for hours now and haven't found a solution. I'm hoping that some android guru can aid me in the resolution of this bizarre rendering issue. MainMenuActivity.java relevant code snippet (the activity in which the gallery resides) Gallery optionList = (Gallery)findViewById(R.id.mainMenuOptionList); GalleryItem[] optionListItemIdArray = new GalleryItem[] { new GalleryItem(R.drawable.icon_main_menu_option_list_blackboard, "Start Next Lesson", "Start the next planned vocab lesson."), new GalleryItem(R.drawable.icon_main_menu_option_list_index_cards, "Review Words", "Manually look over old words."), new GalleryItem(R.drawable.icon_main_menu_option_list_dice, "Play Vocab Games", "Play games to reinforce knowledge."), new GalleryItem(R.drawable.icon_main_menu_option_list_calendar, "View Lesson Plan", "View the schedule for coming lessons."), new GalleryItem(R.drawable.icon_main_menu_option_list_pie_chart, "View Performance Report", "Evaluate your overall performance statistics."), new GalleryItem(R.drawable.icon_main_menu_option_list_settings, "Manage Settings", "Change and modify application settings.") }; optionList.setAdapter(new GalleryImageAdapter(this, optionListItemIdArray)); NOTE: A GalleryItem is a POJO with an image resource id, title and description. • Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus.It’s As Beautiful As An iPad.

    - by Gopinath
    After the launch of iOS 5, OS X Lion and iCloud Steve Jobs proposed Apple’s plans for construction of a new campus in Cupertino. In a presentation to Cupertino City Council, Steve proposed to construct a spaceship style beautiful building that can house 12000 employees. Apple recently purchased 150 acres of land from HP and others in Cupertino and this land will be used for their new campus. The architectural design of the new campus looks awesome just like their products: iPad / iPhone.It’s a four storied circular building with all curved glasses that can accommodate 12000 employees.,  “We do have a shot at building the best office building in the world,” Jobs told the Council members, “Architecture students will come here to see this.”. The facility is going to be eco-friendly with 80% of landscaping with most of the parking going to underground. The current campus has 3700 trees and Apple is planning to increase them to 6000 trees. The campus will be powered with its own renewable energy source and electric grid as backup. Steve described It’s a pretty amazing building. It’s a little like a spaceship landed. It’s got this gorgeous courtyard in the middle… It’s a circle. It’s curved all the way around. If you build things, this is not the cheapest way to build something Check out the embedded video of Steve Jobs at the City Council meeting An Apple Fan boy quickly photoshopped the new campus to something more interesting This article titled,Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus.It’s As Beautiful As An iPad., was originally published at Tech Dreams.
