• Unable to install PHP-FPM on Apache (Failed to connect to FastCGI server)

  I have been having problem installing php-fpm for use with apache2-mpm-worker. This is the guide that I am following. According to the guide's Step 5, Alias /php5-fcgi /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi FastCgiExternalServer /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi -host 127.0.0.1:9000 -pass-header Authorization However I cannot find php5-fcgi at /usr/lib, but only /usr/bin/php5-cgi and /usr/bin/php-cgi, which I am not sure if they are the same. • Error when trying to deploy Windows XP SP3 with WDS

  I have created a WDS server running Windows Server 2008 R2. I have built my custom images of Windows 7 using WAIK and MDT 2010 that are installed on the server. I used this guide to help me through the process. The Windows 7 images that I have created capture and deploy properly. I am attempting to follow the same steps from the guide I linked to capture and deploy a Windows XP SP3 image. I am able to sysprep and capture the reference machine with no errors. I am then able to import the custom .wim that I just captured in to MDT 2010 with no issues either. However when I try to deploy this image to a test virtual machine I get the following error: Deployment Error: I have made sure that the .iso that I am importing the source files from originally to create the sysprep and capture sequence is indeed a Windows XP SP3 iso. When I first select a PE boot environment before I deploy I select the x86 PE boot image that I created originally when making this for my Windows 7 deployments. Could this be the issue? If so how do I make a boot image specific for Windows XP SP3 deployments? I have Googled around for this error and some places point to the deployment image not being able to find setup.exe and other important system files for installing the operating system. If so, how do I add these to the image? Any ideas?

• How to use Windows mini-dump files?

  I have a Mini-ITX Intel DH61AG mobo w/ an Intel i3 processor and 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Anyways, this computer has been crashing kind of frequently. It is not an OS problem, as I have used Ubuntu (and had kernel panics), Windows 7, and Windows 8 (BSODs aren't going to keep me from tinkering =p) Anyways, each of these OSes have had problems, so I ran a HDD check, and I know it is not a heat issue because I tested the processor for a few days when I first put the computer together. When I ran memtest86+, however, I got an error - so I did individual testing, and both chips came back good, did a really intense test with both of them again (took half a day), and no errors. So, I still think the problem could be RAM, but I am not sure - I tested it pretty extensively (might let it run all night again tonight)... which brings me to my point. Could someone explain to me (in simple terms if possible) how to READ the minidump files of Windows computers? I've tried before with a guide I found online, but failed miserably (can't remember guide, either =/). I'm fine with installing the software, I will probably need it sometime in the future as well. I have seen a few other posts on SU that just ask people to post minidump logs, but I feel as if that is too localized. Would someone be able to explain this? • Workstations cannot see new MS Server 2008 domain, but can access DHCP.

  The XP Pro workstations do not see the new replacement domain upon boot; they only see their cached entry for the old (server 2003) domain controller. The old_server is not connected to the network. I have DHCP working with the same scope as the old_server. The DC netbios is city01 while the domain's FQDN is city.domain.org (I think this is mistaken and should have been just domain.org) But, the second link led me to a post which I believe answers my question. I did as they instructed by opening Local Area Connection Properties, then selecting TCP/IPv4 and setting the sole preferred DNS server to the local hosts static IP (10.10.1.1). I am hoping to reach the point where I can define users and user groups. Also, does TechNet have a single theoretical overview document I could read. I really don't like treating comps as magic. • Parental Controls in Ubuntu - per user

  I would like to set up parental controls on Ubuntu for a friend of mine. I want it so that the child user has the controls set, but the parent user is not restricted. To be clear, they are sharing one computer, so a router based solution won't help. And I would like a set of step by step instructions to do this. Just one way of doing it. I'm an experienced Ubuntu user, happy at the command line. I've spent quite some time googling for this along the way. I hope that the GChildCare project will eventually make this easy, but it is not ready yet. In the meantime, the WebContentControl GUI provides a way of managing parental controls, but apply them to every user on the computer (easy WebContentContol install instructions and detailed instructions, discussion and related links on ubuntuforums). The ubuntuforums post has a FAQ that states that user-specific configuration is not possible with WebContentControl, and then provides 3 links he used to help him do it. But they are far from step by step instructions. There is this thread which is notes along the way and linking to this article about squid and dansguardian. And then to these two dansguardian articles which are somewhat in depth ... So does anyone know of an existing guide to how to set up parental controls on ubuntu with some users not affected? If no one has come up with an answer after a little bit, I'll set up a community wiki answer so we can come up with a guide.

  While I'm quite comfortable as a Linux user, my Linux Admin-fu is a bit weak. Thus, I'm here looking for guidance with a CentOS server I'm about to build. I need to setup an Apache2 web server for a few of our clients. I want each client's web content to be under their home directory (USERDIR in apache.conf, right?) for the static HTML sites. I want Apache to run as the client (suexec?). Some of their stuff will be PHP apps and I'm under the impression I'll want to look at suphp as well then. So basically I want to look like a small version of a shared web hosting company. Considering how common those are I thought I'd easily find a nice current How-To guide on setting this all up but so far I've had very little luck. I suspect my search words are off. So the questions (feel free to answer any or all): Anyone have some solid links to current/modern guides that would help me set this all up? No, the apache documentation site is not a guide ;-) Since I have a mix of static sites and PHP apps do I want/need both suexec and suphp installed? If so, does that introduce any challenges I should be aware of? Should I be looking at other options instead of suexec and suphp? I plan to give the end users SSH, SFTP or SCP access to their stuff (if that affects anything). Thanks in advance for your help.

• Registering publicly Mail server and Web server in a free dns server

  I'm trying to host the e-mails and the site of our company into our private server. I've already followed the Gentoo Virtual Mailhosting System with Postfix Guide and my mail server is working (actually it sends mails for the local users and for external users it goes to spam) and know how to set an Apache 2 server. What I don't know (and I mean really don't) is how to make them public. I did some research and found that I should ask my ISP to change the reverse DNS to my company domain in order to prevent my mails to be marked as spam, they are doing. I already know I have to configure a DNS Server, it seems like my register provider already has one but I don't know how I can configure CNET, A, MX, TXT and all those tags (Is it tags the name?) and If I must do some other configuration on my server. My Server: Linux mail 3.2.21-gentoo #1 SMP My /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 mail.example.com.br example example.com.br ::1 mail.example.com.br mail example.com.br My /etc/conf.d/hostname: hostname ="mail" What am I missing? • Building a Media Center PC with Comcast Cable...?

  Alright - so this might be a stupid question but I've never been all that much into TV. I currently have Comcast cable. I've just got the 'basic' 2-60 package or whatever; I've just always plugged the cable into the back of my TV. I've never had a cable box. Recently, Comcast has been pulling channels off of my line-up. Most recently, the stole the TV Guide channel from me. I'm told this is part of a push to get customers to switch to their digital line-up. But, I'm also told it requires some sort of digital receiver for each TV you've got. I don't want to buy a bunch of these digital receivers and I don't want to pay the monthly rental fee...but I have heard of how awesome media center PCs are and some really cool things they can do. And, I've got loads of PC parts sitting around. So, can someone guide me through this a bit? Are there computer video cards or TV tuners that are going to work with Comcast's digital cable? What kind of price range are we looking at?

• Cisco Catalyst 4500 Policy Based Routing

  In order to test a new firewall I just set up I'm trying to implement policy based routing on our core switch. I want traffic from certain vlans to be routed to the new firewall while everything else continues being routed through the old firewall. I was trying to use this guide. Everything from that guide works fine except trying to run the "ip policy route-map" command in the interface configuration mode. IOS is telling me that such a command doesn't exist. A "show ip interface vlan" command says that policy routing is disabled. Any ideas? • Workstations cannot see new MS Server 2008 domain, but can access DHCP. (solved)

  The XP Pro workstations do not see the new replacement domain upon boot; they only see their cached entry for the old (server 2003) domain controller. The old_server is not connected to the network. I have DHCP working with the same scope as the old_server. The DC netbios is city01 while the domain's FQDN is city.domain.org (I think this is mistaken and should have been just domain.org) But, the second link led me to a post which I believe answers my question. I did as they instructed by opening Local Area Connection Properties, then selecting TCP/IPv4 and setting the sole preferred DNS server to the local hosts static IP (10.10.1.1). I am hoping to reach the point where I can define users and user groups. Also, does TechNet have a single theoretical overview document I could read. I really don't like treating comps as magic. I will be watching this closely and will quickly answer any questions. If I've left anything out it is because I did not know it was needed. PS: I am loath to ask obviously basic questions, but I am tired and wish to fix this before tomorrow. Also, this is my first server installation, thank you for your help.

• Configuring CakePHP on Hostgator

  I have absolutely no idea what I am doing wrong here. I have followed just about every guide there is with installing cakephp on shared hosting and I am still having problems. I have also started over each time when following a guide. Maybe someone can help me out here as I am out of options. Here is my current setup: / app webroot vendors lib cake public_html .htaccess index.php plugins I have configured the index.php file in the public_html to point to the correct files. I have also done this in the index.php file located in webroot folder. I am getting an Internal 500 server error and it says to check my logs for what the error specifically is. However there are no logs being generated. I removed the .htaccess file from the public_html folder and I get the following errors: Warning: require(/app/webroot/index.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/user/public_html/index.php on line 40 Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/app/webroot/index.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/user/public_html/index.php on line 40 line 40 is require APP_DIR . • Avoid "privacy pitfalls" in Windows and Linux?

  I have a Windows and a Linux machine. In Windows, everytime I visit a site, a lot of cache/history files are created on my machine. I setup my Firefox to don't save anything. ...but Windows saves a lot of "temp" files, some strange files I opened in registry (like video names). Each video I open in VLC is shown in "Last shown videos". In windows, all files opened can be found at "Recent opened files" as well. A lot of these privacy configurations can be tweaked (VLC and "Recent opened files" in Windows) - it's a PITA doing it individually, but it's possible - but there isn't a guide to these "internal" privacy traces that are left on Windows installation. In Linux, I just know there are these problems in app level (like VLC). My question is: is there a complete guide to avoid undesirable traces of what I did/watch/used in my Windows machine? (Delete everytime the PC is restarted, or even avoiding recording these info at all) Is there a website with configuration guides to different types of software? I would like to know about Linux privacy pitfalls as well.

• What are the steps needed to set up and use security for AWS command line tools?

  I've been trying to set up the AWS command-line tools following Eric's most useful guide at http://alestic.com/2012/09/aws-command-line-tools. I can't seem to find a good how-to for how to generate the x509 certificate and private key, and how that relates to the various security files the guide creates. Update: I have found a couple of links that describe the some steps. These steps seem to work, however I'm not sure if this is secure & the best way to do it: 1) Create a private key openssl genrsa -out my-private-key.pem 2048 2) Create x.509 cert openssl req -new -x509 -key my-private-key.pem -out my-x509-cert.pem -days 365 Hit enter to accept all of the defaults. Then, from the IAM Dashboard, User, select a user & click on the "Security Credentials" tab. Click on "Manage Signing Certificates", then "Upload Signing Certificate", paste in the contents of my-x509-cert.pem, click OK and it should be accepted. One step that is discussed, but not required for me, was the addition and subsequent removal of a pass phrase on the private key. Should I have been prompted for one, and is my cert potentially unsafe because of this?

• Cannot Install Phusion Passenger 3.0.13 with Nginx 1.2.1

  I installed gem Passenger which installed 3.0.13. Then I executed passenger-install-nginx-module which is what the Nginx instructions on http://www.modrails.com said to do. It installs the latest stable version which is 1.2.1 according to the Nginx official wiki page. I said to install Nginx to /usr/local/nginx (which is the default if you go to the nginx wiki website). I get the following errors: Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64: "_pcre_free_study", referenced from: _ngx_pcre_free_studies in ngx_regex.o ld: symbol(s) not found for architecture x86_64 collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [objs/nginx] Error 1 make: *** [build] Error 2 -------------------------------------------- It looks like something went wrong Please read our Users guide for troubleshooting tips: /Users/server1/.rvm/gems/[email protected]/gems/passenger-3.0.13/doc/Users guide Nginx.html If that doesn't help, please use our support facilities at: http://www.modrails.com/ We'll do our best to help you. I have done searches for several hours trying to find a resolution. I tried the Google Group for Phusion Passenger but did not find anything. I do not know if there is a mismatch in version numbers or not. The documentation says nothing about this error.

• Broken Python installation on CentOS 5.8

  I already searched for solution to my problem via Google and stackoverflow's search facility, but haven't found anything related specifically to it. Here's the problem: I needed python 2.7.3 on CentOS 5.8 machine which has only python 2.4.3 preinstalled. Also neither there's the suitable version in it's repositories nor I can upgrade installed version. That's why I decided to build python from source code. But I've made a mistake: instead of make altinstall I did make install thus changing default version of the current installation. It was before I found this article - How to install Python 2.7.3 on CentOS 6.2 . I guess 5.8 and 6.2 versions aren't different to the extent this article is inapplicable. After installation of new python version I installed pip, but once I tried to invoke it, I got "No module named pkg_resources" error. In order to solve this issue I installed setuptools from repository. But it had only led to another error: "Distribution Not Found". My final step was to follow the guide I posted the link to, but I was unable to perform last step: easy_install-2.7 virtualenv command threw "-bash: /usr/local/bin/easy_install-2.7: .: bad interpreter: Permission denied" error. Now when I try to invoke pip or pip-2.7 both commands raise the same error with different names of binaries after "-bash:". Is there any way to fix this problem, so I could install new python version (2.7.3) alongside with the preinstalled one (2.4.3) according to the guide? Any help will be appreciated. P.S.: yum is working fine, although it needs python to function, so I hope the damage I unknowingly caused isn't very severe. Also I'm not a native English speaker, so I apologize for possible occasional grammatical and/or spelling errors.

• Installing Debian 7.1 on FakeRAID/Intel Z77 results in boot with no grub menu

  I'm trying to install Debian 7.1 from DVD onto 2x500GB drives which are set up in a FakeRAID mirror using the on-board FakeRAID provided by the Z77 chipset. I have followed the guide here https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid. Namely, I booted into the expert install with the 'dmraid=true' option added, installed onto the RAID mirror which the installer correctly detected, then installed grub2 onto /dev/mapper/.. raid volume. I chose to use LVM (so a boot partition + LVM volume). As per the guide, I have uncommented the "GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true" line in "/etc/default/grub" and ran "update-grub" then "grub-install /dev/mapper/.." (with the right RAID device in the command). However, after I rebooted the system, all I got was a grub console. It did not load the menu. I checked and it seems that it never even generated a menu file. I re-installed Debian a few times since, trying out different options and also a few workarounds people posted online, but to no avail. The best I am getting is a grub console. No menu. Some times it will generate the grub.cfg, some times it won't, depending on the workaround I try. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. There is no need to preach how I should not use FakeRAID. I have seen others trying to figure this out so I think a resolution to this issue would be of interest to more than just me. Also, I first installed the system onto a small drive for testing something else. I made a backup with Acronis and was able to restore that onto the RAID mirror by using Universal Restore. When I installed it onto a 500GB without RAID, backed up using the same method, then restored onto a RAID volume of the same size, it would not boot and I got grub errors. Weird. I can post more details, just let me know what you want to see.
