• Will SSD degrade when running VMWare Workstation from SSD?

  My main OS (Windows 7 or 8) is runned from SSD. I'd want to run Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 using VMWare workstation. I've heard that VMWare doesn't support TRIM and other things to optimize SSD usage. So SSD will quickly degrade if VM will be runned from SSD. Will it be better to put guest OS's files (.vmdk and the rest) to external HDD (connected through USB 2 or 3) instead of SSD? What advantages and disadvantages it will give? What if VM will be put to internal HDD? At what drive type performance of VM will be better?

• Empty AAAA DNS Record with long TTL?

  I pay for a DNS service based on queries per second. We are not using IPv6, but a large number of queries (that I pay for) are coming in for AAAA records. I understand that most DNS stacks will now ask for A and AAAAs at the same time, and that I can't change that. What I /would/ like to do is put something in the AAAA records with a long TTL. (decreasing my hit rate) Is there anything I can put? Null? The equivalent IPv4 Address? Any guidance would be appreciated.

• Running ubuntu 10.04 without a laptop's primary display

  I have an IBM thinkpad(R50e) whose display is broken. I would still like to use the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. This is what I did: Removed the hard disk from the broken IBM Put the hard disk in the working IBM and installed 10.04 on it. It booted fine and I installed many packages and stuff. I put the hard disk back into the broken display IBM thinking I could use it by connecting it to an external monitor that I own. Well, it turns out that while booting, the display shows up but because the display shifts from the VGA display to the primary display mid-boot, the laptop does not boot. Is there a way in which I can force the laptop to not use its primary display while booting. I looked at Randr and also grub.conf settings but nothing seemed to work. Please help!

• Recover data from SD card

  I have a 2GB kingston microSD card which is about 3 years old. I put it in a reader today in my Windows Vista computer, wrote a 32MB file onto it, safely removed it, and then tried to read it elsewhere. Nothing. Putting it back in vista it now says You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. What should I do? I have access to many computers and OSes if your recommendations need that. I would be very sad if I lost all the contents of the card. Most of the data is backed up, but there are a few things that aren't. :( Doing a # dd if=/dev/sdg of=~/tmp/sd.bin gives me a 2 gig file, and grepping the file it seems like lots of my data is still there, how can I put it back together?

• Ditto (clipboard manager): can't set shortcut of Win+<num>. Get “Error Registering Position 1”

  Somone made a Youtube video on Ditto, and that person uses Win+Num to paste items from the list. He put a screenshot of his settings on Google Plus: When I try to do the same, which is to put “1” in the text field of Position 1, and check the “Win” box to add the Windows key as the sole modifier for the shortcut, which will be Win + 1, I get an error in that says “Error Registering Position 1” in a window titled CP_Main: Could it be because Win+Num conflicts with the natural Win+Num shortcut (starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program) of Windows 7? • Sagem Router Wifi Key Issue

  Hi I have a multiservices sagem router which supports wifi as well, the pack came up with a default wifi configuration key and a WEP Key in the label of the package like this: WIFI Configuration key: abcd1234 WEP Key: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now, when i execute the wifi usb wizard in the official cd, it asks me for the WIFI key, i put the abcd1234 & it says it's incorrect, i try the long WEP key and it says that the key should only have 8 characters. When i go to the control panel of the router in the wifi config, i see that: Open Authentification System WEP 128 Bit Passphrase: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now since the wizard only accepts 8 characters, i try to change the 128bit to 64bit and put some 8 characters and it ends up saying that the new key should be 5 or 13, or 10-26 hex numbers. What to do? Thanks

  Hi - first question on serverfault - pls excuse if asked elsewhere. I have a Dell Precision 690 with one 73GB (15000RPM) SAS drive in it. Running Windows 7 (x64) with a bunch of apps means it is running out of space. I have on order a 147GB (15000RPM) SAS drive (same GB/s, same make) which I want to put into the machine. Not knowing anything about SAS, do I need to replace the 73GB with the 147GB and restore from a backup, or can I put the drive in the machine and get the controller to treat the two drives as one large one? (The original paperwork for the machine says 73GB SAS (No RAID) if that is relevant.) Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately Google dropped our main domain from search results. our main site has been in first page for 5 years! About one year ago we build this sub-domain. It simply has been redirected to one of pages of main domain. For solving problem we upload a independent site for sub-domain because we guessed that Google think this is our main page of our site. But problem did not solved. What should we do? our main site offer main services and we we want that will be on first page. Shout down sub-domain? Redirect to main site? Put the link of our main site in sub-domain? (About one year ago we put link of this sub-domain to our main site. Google indexed it and continuously bring that to top.) changing in robots.txt ....

• Ubuntu live CD and installing new applications onto a USB drive

  Background: I am a programmer that occasionally has access to other computers when on vacation or something. These are generally the machines of friends or family, so randomly installing Ubuntu on it wouldn't be terribly polite. I would like to completely avoid the hard drive of the target machine. Not all of these machines can boot to USB either, so that simple solution is out. What I want to be able to do is boot to an Ubuntu live CD, plug in a USB drive and then grab various updates and other applications, installing them to the USB drive. Later, on another machine, put in the live CD, after boot, put in the USB drive and then magic, I have all of the updates/applications/data/etc that I've tossed onto the drive. I suspect that it should be possible to mount /home, /var, /usr, and maybe a couple of other locations from the USB drive or something along those lines. So is this possible and what do I need to do?

  I'm having some problem with my centOS machine.I want to insert a line inside the rc.local to execute apache tomcat on startup. Below are the configuration for /etc/rc.local #!/bin/sh # # This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts. # You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't # want to do the full Sys V style init stuff. touch /var/lock/subsys/local /opt/apache-jakarta/bin/startup.sh Unfortunately,the apache tomcat does not start on the boot time. I've already execute the script manually and it is working without any issues. Is there any specific syntax to put script inside the rc.local?Or did I forgetting something?Please Advice.Thanks. • Proxy Server suggestions

  Here is the question I have that hopefully is not too general of a question. I have a network with approximately 25 PC's, 3 servers and 25 IP cameras. I have a firewall already on the network and it works fine for what I need, but my client is asking me if there is a way to put a Proxy server on the network to monitor where his employees are going when they surf the Internet. He is not wanting to block them (at least not thru the Proxy server), but he wants to make sure that they arent going to sites that would compromise the networked PCs. I have looked at TMG and it is a little more than what I want. I hesitate adding another firewall to the system because of the security cameras that are presently on the network (IP Cameras). I just want to put a policy in AD that would make certain Users (or Computers) use a Proxy server. Any suggestions on a good proxy server are welcome. Thank you

• Many user stories share the same technical tasks: what to do?

  A little introduction to my case: As part of a bigger product, my team is asked to realize a small IDE for a DSL. The user of this product will be able to make function calls in the code and we are also asked to provide some useful function libraries. The team, together with the PO, put on the wall a certain number of user stories regarding the various libraries for the IDE user. When estimating the first of those stories, the team decided that the function call mechanism would have been an engaging but not completely obvious task, so the estimate for that user story raised up from a simple 3 to a more dangerous 5. Coming to the problem: The team then moved to the user stories regarding the other libraries, actually 10 stories, and added those 2 points of "function call mechanism" thing to each of those user story. This immediately raised up the total points for the product of 20 points! Everyone in the team knows that each user story could be picked up by the PO for the next iteration at any time, so we shouldn't isolate that part in one user story, but those 20 points feel so awfully unrealistic! I've proposed a solution, but I'm absolutely not satisfied: We created a "Design story" and put those annoying 2 points over it. However when we came to realize and demonstrate it to our customers, we were unable to show something really valuable for them about that story! Here the problem is whether we should ignore the principle of having isolated user stories (without any dependency between them). What would you do, or even better what have you done, in situations like this? (a small foot-note: following a suggestion I've moved this question from stackoverflow)

• Is there a PROPRIETARY driver (NVIDIA or ATI) that actually works with 12.10?

  NOTE: I see many similar topics on this, but I've tried all their suggestions, and nothing has worked. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE SEEMS TO BE: I always get a black screen with a blinking cursor, while others seem to get through the boot-up and see distorted graphics or just their wallpaper. ISSUE: I do a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10. Boots fine with the “nouveau” graphics driver – graphics (even just menus) are very slow, choppy, and distorted. The three other driver options in Ubuntu (official NVIDIA drivers), all result in a variation of the black screen on boot up. There will be NO access to a command line/GUI in anyway what-so-ever (tried every option recommended out there, but the system is unusable at this stage). I can only reinstall, and try different drivers…and I only ever get one shot at it. QUESTIONS: -Does anyone know of a PROPRIETARY driver that will actually work on 12.10 with a NVIDIA or ATI card? -Should I just buy a newer graphics card to put in as a replacement? MORE INFO: This is my second computer, and I’m just trying to get a working install of Ubuntu on it. I don’t want to put much money into it, as I have seen Ubuntu run great on much older/less capable machines. I’ve got a decent'ish Core2Duo Intel processor (2.13Ghz), 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, 32-bit architecture, and there is no other O/S installed. It appears as if the graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce 7350 LE) is holding me back. TRIED SO FAR: -all drivers available in Ubuntu *all fail -manual install of some different NVIDIA drivers *all fail -also tried installing the generic kernel, Nvidia driver doesn't work in 12.10 *no difference -tried installing 12.04 *same results -every method suggested to at least get a command line after switching to a NVIDIA driver *all fail -UPDATE- Re-tried everything above with a new NVIDIA Geforce 210...same results for everything. -UPDATE #2- Re-tried everything above with a new AMD Radeon HD 6450...installed the proprietary driver from Ubuntu's "Software Sources" menu...EVERYTHING NOW WORKS.   I was reading this post: http://forums.netbeans.org/post-8864.html and what I have done so far is to make a jFrame in NetBeans, on it I have drawn a jPanel and inisde the panel I have drawn a jLabel on it and use the icon property to put an image on it; until now all is so far so good. I would like to make a program that everytime I click on the figure it rotates it to the right. • Can you convert an address to a zip code in a spreadsheet?

  Given a column of street addresses with city and state but no zip in a spreadsheet, I'd like to put a formula in a second column that yields the ZIP code. Do you know a way to do this? I'm dealing with US addresses, but answers pertaining to other countries are interesting, too. UPDATE: I guess I'm mostly hoping that there's a way to do this in Google Spreadsheets. I realize that you need to access a vast ZIP code database to do this, but it seems to me that such a database is already inside Google Maps. If I put an address in there without ZIP code, I get back an address with ZIP code. If Maps can do that lookup, maybe there's a way to make it happen in Spreadsheets, too.

  Audible Books fails to install into iTunes I am using a desktop with Windows 7 64 bit. I have been downloading Audible Books for 3 years and have 85 installed. Several months ago downloading them did not put them in iTunes and the system wants me to import them manually. You start with "C\Program Files\iTunes\ and add two lines..... I know I need to choose the destination for 64 bit, but I do not see iTunes and I do not know how to put this title into iTunes if I can locate it? The folks at Audible wasted a lot of my time but were zero help! How can I get these books into my computer?

• Avoiding bloated Domain Objects

  We're trying to move data from our bloated Service layer into our Domain layer using a DDD approach. We currently have a lot of business logic in our services, which is spread out all over the place and doesn't benefit from inheritance. We have a central Domain class which is the focus of most of our work - a Trade. The Trade object will know how to price itself, how to estimate risk, validate itself, etc. We can then replace conditionals with polymorphism. Eg: SimpleTrade will price itself one way, but ComplexTrade will price itself another. However, we are worried that this will bloat the Trade class(s). It really should be in charge of its own processing but the class size is going to increase exponentially as more features are added. So we have choices: Put processing logic in Trade class. Processing logic is now polymorphic based on the type of the trade, but Trade class is now has multiple responsibilites (pricing, risk, etc) and is large Put processing logic into other class such as TradePricingService. No longer polymorphic with the Trade inheritance tree, but classes are smaller and easier to test. What would be the suggested approach?

• Eclipse will not install Android Support Package [migrated]

  I am an experienced programmer but new to Android, hence using Eclipse for the first time. Unfortunately I cannot get my first project off the ground. I get as far trying to create the project when the following sequence happens. A screen arrives titled 'Install Dependencies' telling me that the required version is 8 and the installed version is 'Not installed' I click on the Install/Upgrade button and something must happen because Android SDK Manager pops up and I get a whole series of 'Fetching:' messages. The next screen asks me to Choose Package to Install and the only option is Android Support Library, revision 10. This doesn't bother me as I presume 10 is better than 8 so I hit the Install button. This is where it all goes wrong as I get a red message saying: File not found: C:\Program Files (X86)\Android\android-sdk\temp\support_r10.zip (Access is denied). Sure enough, when I check this folder, it is empty. Now, something must have happened as as SDK Manager did a whole lot of fetching and must have put these files somewhere. I am quite happy to find them and put them in the correct folder but the question is what is the name of the files that I am looking for?

• Photoshop: Trim a photo so it contains no transparent pixels?

  In Photoshop, I've put together some panorama photos using the Photomerge tool and the resulting image contains a lot of transparent pixels. Also, because it's put together of multiple photos the alignment can be off. What I'd like to do is cut the image down to the largest box which contains no transparent pixels at all. It's similar to the Trim tool, but this would remove a number of non-transparent pixels. Is there anything like this? Basically something which would automatically crop the above image to the selection box there: a rectangle with no transparent pixels.

• What is your approach to draw a representation of your network ?

  Hello, I'm looking to the community to see how people are drawing their networks, i.e. using symbols to represent complex topology. You can have hardware approach, where every hardware unit are represented. You can also have "entity" approach, where each "service" is shown. Both are interesting but it is difficult to have both on the same schema (but this is needed, especially using virtualization environment). Furthermore, it is difficult to have complex informations on such representation. For instance security parameters (encrypted link, need for authentication) or specific details (protocol type, ports, encapsulation). So my question is: where your are drawing a representation of your network, what is your approach ? Are you using methodology and/or specific softwares ? What is your recommendations for information to put (or not) ? How to deal with the complexity when the network becomes large and/or you want to put a lot of information on it ? Examples and links to good references will be appreciated.

• nautilus will not start, no right click menu, apps will not run due to 64bit libicui18n.so.48 overwritten with 32bit, ubuntu 12.04

  yeah so i broke my system trying to install support for 32bit apps. Somehow the 32bit set of libicu*.so.48 files replaced my 64bit files and now nothing works. I know what the problem is and how to fix it , what i need is some help. I need some kind soul running a 64bit install of Ubuntu 12.04 to simply go into their /usr/lib dir and copy the files that have the form libicu*.so.48* (8 of them i think, maybe 16 i dunno how many there is supposed to be since they were overwritten). Anyway if you could put those files in an archive, zip or tar preferred and then email/share the link. I was able to get these files installed but they're from the latest edition of fedora and while i can now use my computer , it's not that stable things don't start right smoothly every time like they used to .... and well its a simple ordeal to put things back the way they were if someone wouldn't mind helping out. also any help setting up the libraries related to 32bit apps would be great as well as i apparently screwed that up royally. Thanks for any help or advice

• Internal SATA hard disk shows up as removable device on Windows 7

  I am running Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire M7720 with three internal SATA drives; drive #2 and #3 are on a removable HDD rack. Drive #3 (on the second removable HDD rack) shows up as removable device in the system tray. If I take drive #3 and put it in the first rack, it shows up as an internal drive. If I put any other drive in the second removable rack, that drive is also shown as removable device. I would like to fix that so that the drive in the second removable rack also is listed as internal drive. Since this seems to be independent of the actual drive in the rack, I checked the BIOS, but that third SATA port uses the same configuration as the second rack. So far, I could not find a solution for this problem (it's really more an annoyance than a problem), any ideas are welcome.
