    I’m trying to connect over internet to my home workstation which has Windows Server 2008 R2 (Web Edition) installed from my PC at work (Windows 7 installed on it) via Remote Desktop. I configure the workstation to accept remote desktop and I can connect to it from my laptop if I’m within same Home LAN but I can’t establish the connection from my PC at work . My question is: Is possible to connect to my workstation over internet using remote desktop? Is there any step by step resource the setup this feature?

    same as in title? I have a test server with mentioned OS and my app is .net 3.5 based. I do want to know if win 2008 r2 comes with service pack 1 for .net 3.5 from the box. And does it come with .net 3.5 sp1 family update as WELL, since after I downloaded the update, the installer says I do not have software required to update. Could some win 2008 guru perhaps explain it to me? thanks luke

    In older versions of Windows, it was just open the Control Panel, select the System applet, select the Advanced tab, and then hit the Environment variables button. As a normal user, you could edit the "User variables" but not the "System variables". In Windows Server 2008 R2, if I try to hit the Advanced System settings option in the System applet, it prompts for the Administrator password.

    Most functions for generating lognormally distributed random numbers take the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution as parameters. My problem is that I only know the mean and the coefficient of variation of the lognormal distribution. It is reasonably straight forward to derive the parameters I need for the standard functions from what I have: If mu and sigma are the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution, we know that coeffOfVar^2 = variance / mean^2 = (exp(sigma^2) - 1) * exp(2*mu + sigma^2) / exp(mu + sigma^2/2)^2 = exp(sigma^2) - 1 We can rearrange this to sigma = sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) We also know that mean = exp(mu + sigma^2/2) This rearranges to mu = log(mean) - sigma^2/2 Here's my R implementation rlnorm0 <- function(mean, coeffOfVar, n = 1e6) { sigma <- sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) mu <- log(mean) - sigma^2 / 2 rlnorm(n, mu, sigma) } It works okay for small coefficients of variation r1 <- rlnorm0(2, 0.5) mean(r1) # 2.000095 sd(r1) / mean(r1) # 0.4998437 But not for larger values r2 <- rlnorm0(2, 50) mean(r2) # 2.048509 sd(r2) / mean(r2) # 68.55871 To check that it wasn't an R-specific issue, I reimplemented it in MATLAB.     I've been having issues with psexec so I've been migrating to use winrs (part of the winrm system). It's a very nice remoting tool which is proving to be more reliable then psexec. Wuinstall is used to install available windows updates. The two however don't play well together. I'm working on a verity of windows servers 2003, 2008 and 2008r2. Wuinstall behaves the same across all hosts and behaves as expected if executed locally by the same user. It does not matter in what order the new table is.     I need to script some Windows Server 2008 R2 builds, preferably in PowerShell. I need to disable or uncheck IPV6 on a specific NIC (the same NIC every time). Currently, I have to set it manually. I do not want to disable IPV6 completely for the entire server other things may use that in the future. Is there an object I can reference in a PowerShell command specifying my NIC "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection" and disable IPV6? Unfortunately, Group Policy is not an option says the boss. I've tried finding an appropriate WMI object via "PowerShell Scriptomatic" but failed to find the difference between an enabled setting versus disabled on the Intel NIC. Thanks in advance.

Since I am iterating a vector and modifying the vector at the same time? I have thought about putting r2 in a temp rectVect and then remove them from the rectVect later (after the iteration). But how can I skip the ones in this temp rectVect during iteration?

  • Unable to fetch initial output of "defrag" commad in Windows Server 2008 R2 in WOW64 environment.

    Hi All, [Application & code back ground] I have an MFC application which is executing on Windows Server 2008 R2 in WOW64 environment. In which on user input it defragments the selected drive on the disk. I initiated the process(.i.e. cmd /c defrag –v c:) of defragmentation using the CreateProcess() API, along with this to display output of the process on the main screen I created the pipe using CreatePipe() API. I used PeekNamedPipe() & ReadFile() API to get the output and display. [Problem Area] When the process is launched I am not getting the initial output as below: Microsoft Disk fragmenter Copyright © 2007 Microsoft Crop. Invoking defragmentation on (C:)…. I constantly monitor the output of the process while it is under progress but not able to get any thing as output in the pipe. It seem the process is not doing any thing and appears as if the application is not responding. But after certain period of time, once the process is about to completed I get result along with the initial data.   • HELP!!! Upgrading to windows 2008 R2 server has caused major issue with screen scraping remote serve

    I have three servers. One is Windows 2003(A) and another is Windows 2008(B) and third one is also Windows 2008 (C). All of them are web servers. A and B contains classic asp pages and they are 32 bit servers and C contains asp.net pages and is 64 bit server. The asp pages of A and B use the screen scraping technology to render the asp.net pages from C. When A is ran, the asp.net page is rendered fine, meaning there are no broken images or file not found error. When B is ran, the images appears to be broken because its looking for those images in Server B instead of Server C itself. I believe this issue is caused by IIS 7 or 7.5 since IIS 6 has no problem scraping the remote server pages. Can you please help me with solution to this problem? This is sort of urgent since upgrading to windows server 2008 R2 now has been a major show stopper for us at the moment. Thanks in advance.

  • Auto load balancing two node Cluster Hyper-v 2008 R2 enterprise?

    My setup is a 2 node cluster with 72GB ram each and a ~10TB MD3000i Iscsi SAN. I have about 30VMs running I keep about 15 on either server. I do a live migration to the other server if I need to run updates or whatever... Either one of the servers is able of running all VM if needed, but the cpu is pretty high. Here's my issues. I know Hyper-v has a limit of a single Live-migration at a time. But Why doesn't it queue them up to move one at a time? If I multi select I don't get the option to live migrate a one at a time. OR if I'm in the process of Migrating one it will give me an error that it's currently migrating a VM... Is there a button I missed that will tell a Node that it needs to migrate all the VMs elsewhere? Another question, does anyone know whats the best way to load balance VMs based on CPU and/or network utilzation. I have some VMs that don't do much. and some that trash the CPU or network. I'd like to balance it out on both servers if at all possible. and Is there any way to automate it? last question... If I overcommit my Cluster is there a way to tell the cluster that I want certian VMs the be running and to savestate other VMs based on availible system resources? Say when my one node blue screens and the other node begins starting the VMs up. I want the unimportant ones to shutdown or savestate so the important ones can stay running or come back online.   • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Drivers Missing Would Not Install?

    I am building my dev machine with WS2008R2SP1. I consider Windows Server as the best development environment for C# since I tend to focus on server-centric (integration) applications. The desktop flavor of Windows (7) doesn't play nicely with things like Commerce Server or BizTalk... so I to like stick to the environment I develop for. Previously I used to develop inside of VM's but I've found that it is super inefficient and tends to take a toll on the laptops. (I've gone through two of them in 6 months). Problem is that I multiple devices that do not want to be recognized by Windows: My machine is Dell Precision M4500: Intel Core i7-Q740, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, Dell re-branded Broadcom DW1501 802x11n Half-Mini Card, Dell re-branded Broadcom DW375 Bluetooh Module, Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connection NVidia Quadro FX1800 Graphics The devices in question are the Dell rebranded broadcom network and bluetooth adapters: Broadcom USH: USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&REV_0101&MI_00 USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00 DW375 Bluetooth Module USB\VID_413C&PID_8187&REV_0517 USB\VID_413C&PID_8187 When I ran the broadcom installers I get "Operating System not supported" which I think is a big oversight on Broadcom's part. Why check for system version string? UGHGHGH Moreover if I try to manually force the driver in windows... I get an error: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\btwampsecfl.inf_amd64_neutral_d8fc2b85d035ed47\btwampsecfl.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_00\7&66DE6C9&0&0000 with the following status: 0xe0000217. '- or - Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\btwampfl.inf_amd64_neutral_d4c4acf036c61299\btwampfl.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_413C&PID_8187\90004EEEF5A6 with the following status: 0xe0000217. I googled the 0xe0000217 error code and it says Bad service install section in the driver inf file... Any ideas on how to fix this? I also tried the post by BetaIQ on MSDN Forum, unfortunately the links to the driver package included in the post were dead :( PS. On a side note I also do mobile development for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, and BB. Having the bluetooth is quite useful with mobile devices.

    I need some help guys. I've just modified the Folder Redirection Policy on my server at work so the hiarcy resembles windows 7's user folder structure rather than XP. I did this to the book so I know its right. However, I'm still seeing that all the user accounts are still layed out as XP compatible folder hiracys. Is there somthing I need to do to update these accounts with the new policy?

    I have IIS set up on my server, but also Apache x2 (other products which comes with their own servers, cannot be integrated into IIS.) Is it possible for me to "port-forward" certain domains on port 80 (that IIS handles) to those other ports? For instance: www.vkarlsen.no - IIS svn.vkarlsen.no - port 81 on same machine teamcity.vkarlsen.no - port 82 on same machine Or do I just need to set up those domains and redirect to the correct port? I'd like the domain name and url to be transparent to the user, but perhaps that won't work. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    I've installed MSSQL server correctly, then I took some wrong turns and I'm now left in a pretty undesirable state. I wanted to change the server instance to another drive, so I uninstalled SQL server and all of it's features from the Programs and Features control panel. Now when I tried to install a new instance, I got a few errors, but it still installed most of them: Then I tried to run a repair, which I figured would fix things, but it throws an exception about not being able to read something from the CD (tried more than once always the same exception) Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file R:\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\SSCERuntime_x86-enu.msi , and it fails to repair a few of the features: And I don't have the server instance installed either. So I'm left with no MSSQLMS, no server instance, and no happiness. What would be the best course of action here?

  • Assistance on setup to Connect an offsite server to the LAN via RRAS VPN - Server 2008 R2

    I have an office LAN protected using a Zyxel Zywall USG 300. I've set up an L2TP/ipsec VPN on that which accepts connections using a shared secret and I've tested this from multiple clients. I have a server offsite and want to set up RRAS to use a persistent connection to the VPN so that it can carry out network jobs even with no one logged in (I'm using it for Micorosft DPM secondary backup). If I create a vpn as if I were setting up a users laptop it can dial in no problem but if I set up a demand dial interface in RRAS it errors. I enable RRAS ticking only demand dial interface (branch office routing) Select network interfaces, right click and choose new demand dial interface Name the VPN ToCompany Select connect using VPN And then L2TP as the vpn type enter the IP address (double-checked for typos!) select Route IP packets on this interface specify static route to remote network as 10.0.0.0/24 with metric of 1 add dial out credentials (again double checked for typos and confirmed with other vpn connections click finish now I right-click on the new interface and choose properties and then the security tab I change Data encryption to optional select only PAP for Authentication (both as per manufacturer of Zywall) click advanced settings against type of vpn and set shared secret then I select the new interface, right-click and choose connect this dials and then errors with either 720 or 811 as the error codes. However, if I create a VPN by going to Network & Sharing center and setting up as if I was creating a VPN from my laptop to the office (say) it dials successfully so I know the VPN settings are correct and the machine can connect to the VPN. Suggests very strongly the problem is how I'm setting up RRAS. Can anyone help?

    the server model: HP Poliant DL160 G5, both servers have identical product ID. for some reason one of the servers have 4GB ram reserved. it shows in the memory tab on the Resource monitor as "Hardware Reserved". I've googled it a bit and found some post related to msconfig boot parameters (but mine are properly set) and some post related to memory remap option in the bios but it is not available in my servers bios so in a bit lost... help?

My questions: Should I be doing a manual backup of DHCP via command line tools or maybe with MMC, Action, Backup before I run my backup? Is the %SystemRoot%\System32\DHCP\Backup directory always kept up to date? (which does get backed up by backup software) I'm answering my own question but the registry key is set up for 3c, 60 minutes, I believe. It is another product, but I have seen this with every backup software I've ever used.

  • Accessing a shared folder in Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Hello all, seems my involvement with computers has grown and I've found my self in the need to access a shared folder on a server. I've read some documentation and managed to set up the folder as a share, for this I created a local group and for now just one local user that has access to the share, the folder is in the public user folder and it's permissions should be (and I believe they are) read/write. The problem is that I can't connect from a remote machine I mean I don't know how the way it should be accessed, the server has a public IP and we use it also as a host to our website I don't know if that affects it though, the folder will be used as the "keeper" for the QuickBooks company files and has the database server manager installed. I've tried setting up a VPN Connection to the but no success. The server has a domain name a "http://www.example.com" that redirects to our website, I am unsure if it could be accessed that way, also the share has a location displayed when I right-click properties Heres what I've tried Setting up a VPN Connection (Windows Vista and 7) Got to the point where I got asked for credential and entered the user I created (which is not an admin) but I got a "Connection fail error 800" I suppose this is because in the domain field I entered the servers workgroup. right-click add network connection (Windows 7) Went through the wizard until I reached the point of entering the location, tried many things, the name in the share's properties(\\SOMETHING\Share), the http://www.example.com , the IP address I'm quite unfamiliar with this, so I have my guesses: Since the group and user are local they do not have access to the folder. The firewall in the server is blocking my connection. Anyways, any help and guidence is truly appreciated.

  • Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

    We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)? Thanks for any help.
