• Anybody still making inkjet printers with parallel port interfaces?

  I need small inkjet printers with parallel port interfaces. Unfortunately, it looks like all the big manufacturers have moved fully to USB and ethernet/wireless. Adapters won't work. These are for integrated systems that do not have USB and cannot be upgraded. Anybody have a source for buying older printers, perhaps? HP preferred.

• postfix system "mail name"

  I am installing postfix and I am confused what to put for the system mail name. It has an exmaple that sais use "example.org" if a mail address on the system is "[email protected]" but it also sais that the mail name should be the FQDN. my hostname is "mercury" and my FQDN is "mercury.pacificseatheat.org", so should I use "pacificseatheat.org" or "mercury.pacificseatheat.org" for the system mail name?   When reformatting, Windows XP ask me to choose from these formatting methods. (Implying that ALL of them are "formatting methods"... even #3) Reformat using NTFS (quick) Reformat using NTFS Leave the current file-system intact (no changes) What choice #3 really mean? Does it mean: A. Leave the current file-system (whatever file-system is already in use) and reformat to match that. (ie. If you current have NTFS, reformat to that again. If you currently have FAT32, reformat to that again. That is: Reformat without changing to a different file-system. Leave the current type.) or... B. Do absolutely nothing. Don't format. Don't delete any of my files. Abort the formatting process entirely.

• [PCL vs PostScript] What printer driver should I use?

  I am nstalling drivers for a printer, and I have a choice of either PCL (5 or 6), or PostScript drivers? Which one would you recommend and why? The printer is HP LaserJet 2605dn, the OS is Windows 7 (x64). Do you have a rule of thumb for this sort of thing? Or is it pretty much 'see-what-works'? Thanks

• Ubuntu: Take actions when system temperature gets too high

  One of the CPU fans on my Compaq Presario laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 seems to have bit the dust. The fan is deep within the case and I intend to replace the laptop in the next 6 months so it's not worth replacing it. I have the laptop on a cooling pad and most of the time the system is fine, CPU temps around 90°-110°F. Occasionally, however, I'm seeing random lockups which I believe is due to the system overheating. How can I configure the system to: Lower the CPU speed when the temperature reaches a certain level? (I.E. 110°F) Shutdown the system when the tempature reaches a critical level? (And what would that be? 130°?)

• Screen flicker -> Severe System Slowdown?

  I'm using a Dell D830 laptop, and over the last few weeks it's been developing a very irritating screen flicker problem that leads to the system slowing down almost to the point of unusability. At seemingly random times (no commonality between how long the system has been running, what I was doing, what applications were open, etc.) my screen (I use two external LCD's with the laptop closed in a dock) flickers for a moment, then the system becomes incredibly slow. The screen redraws painfully slowly--almost like what you might expect to see with generic graphics drivers installed--and the entire system is maddeningly unresponsive. The only thing that seems to be able to correct the issue is a restart. I've checked the event logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there, and definitely nothing that's common to all of the events. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Any ideas?

• Dye Sub printer with specific prints remaining - can I command-line query this?

  Hey, I've got a Sony Dye-Sub printer that holds ink/paper sets - i.e. a very certain amount of ink and paper for ~200 prints. This information is available to me from within Control Panel Printers Preferences Printer Device Information (i.e. current 189 remaining prints). Any way I can perhaps get this information from the command line? I'd like to write a little program to tell me when the number of prints gets low (i.e. < 20), rather than suffer the annoying Windows "run out of paper" popup. I've found the Windows VBScript print utilities, but can't seem to find the request I need for this. Any suggestions? Jason

• Why should I choose either PCL or PS when both are supported

  Obviously the answer depends to some degree on the various versions supported, but in general terms - is there any reason I should pick one over the other? PCL for art and PS for text? Does one typically require less RAM on the printer? Speed differences? For home use it doesn't matter and only professional print people will notice and care? • windows 2008 R2 TS printer security - can't take owership

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers. EDIT: added after Gregs comments regarding setacl below If I log into the TS server as Testusr and open Admin Tools Printer Admin (as administrator) and then type mydomain\testusr and the testusr's password, then I can change the ownership of the printer queue and set testusr as the owner. However if I open cmd as administrator and, again, type mydomain\testusr and the users password when I try to change the ownership of my redirected printer I get the following: C:\>setacl -on "Bullzip PDF Printer (12 redireccionado)" -ot prn -actn setowner -ownr n:mydom\testusr WARNING: Privilege 'Back up files and directories' could not be enabled. However setacl seems to depend on other privileges, which in reality are not required to do this.

• Why *do* windows print queues occasionally choke on a print job

  Y'know they way windows print queues will occasionally stop working with a print job at the head of the queue which just won't print and which you can't delete? Anyone know whats going on when this happens? I've been seeing this since the NT4 days and it still happens on 2008. I'm talking about standard IP connected laser printers - nothing fancy. I support a lot of servers and loads of workstations and see this happen a few times a year. The user will call saying they can't print. When you examine the print queue, which in my case will generally be a server based queue shared out to the workstations, you find a print job which you cannot cancel. You also can't pause it, reinitialize it, nothing. Stopping the spooler is the usual trick and works sometimes. However I occasionally see cases which even this doesn't cure and which a reboot is the only solution. Pause the queue, reboot, when it comes back up the job can then be deleted. Once gone the printer happily goes back to its normal state. No action is ever necessary on the printer. I regard having to reboot as last resort and don't like it. What on earth can be going on when stopping the process (spooler) and restarting it doesn't clear a problem? Its not linked to any manufacturer either. I've seen this on HPs, lexmark, canon, ricoh, on lasers, on plotters.... can't say I ever saw this on dot matrix. Anyone got any ideas as to what may be going on. Ian

• Outlook unable to print email

  I have an installation of Outlook 2003 that won't print emails as of this morning. It can print calendars, and every other program can print fine. Outlook won't print the emails to any printer, not even a PDF creator. As soon as you hit "Print" nothing happens, there's no notification that the print job was sent or anything. The print server never receives a request to print from the computer.

• adding remote ssh printer as local printer

  I have SSH access to a remote host (FreeBSD) that has a printer set up. I do not have root access on that host or any other special user rights. Now I want to print directly from my laptop on that printer (Ubuntu 10.10). The problem is that I don't know how to "import" or whatever the the printer, as it needs authetification from my user account (print quota limitations). E-mailing me the files I want to print or scp them every time is a pain, ATM I pipe the PostScript output manually to a ssh command, but that's also a huge working overhead. E.g. when I want to print a foo.pdf pdftops '/path/to/foo.pdf' - | ssh user@remotehost 'lpr -P printername' So, does anyone know of a smooth way to shorten this procedure? Ideally I would just want to use a printername instead of the whole ssh command

• Firefox or IE crashes when I try to print

  I'm attempting to migrate a user from an XP machine to a 7 machine, using USMT 4.0 (User State Migration Tool, from Microsoft). For some reason the migration of printers isn't working, and none of the topics at Microsoft's TechNet are helping me out. • Set default system audio output port (for all accounts)

  The default output audio port Ubuntu doesn't work on my system. It should be "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier", instead of "Analog Output/Amplifier". I can easily change that in sound preferences, just by choosing the right port in the "Output" tab. The problem is this would only apply to a single account, and I would like to change it system-wide, so it applies to all accounts on the system (I have more than 100 users...). I'm after 2 hours of Googling, so any help would be appreciated.

• Okular (on Ubuntu 9.10) prints multiple pages per sheet (n-up) very small

  I'm trying to print a set of beamer slides with multiple slides per page (4-up or 6-up). When I select 4 pages or 6 pages per sheet in the Okular print dialog, the pages print quite small (perhaps even tiny -- about 1.75" by 1.25") and leave significant white-space on the page. I can get around this behavior by using the pdfnup utility (in the pdfjam package); which will correctly generate a 4- or 6-up pdf file but it's annoying to generate a second pdf file when I should be able to accomplish this task from the print dialog. Details: Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), 64-bit, Color Postscript printer.

• LPR on Windows: Can you specify # of copies?

  In Linux, you can use lpr -#5 foo.txt to get 5 copies of a document when sending to an LPD-based print server. The Windows (XP, 2003, 2008) version of LPR supplied by MS doesn't seem to have this option, though. Does anyone know if there's a hidden option to specify the number of copies? Thanks.

• 2 Printers 1 Queue

  My issue: When an order is processed, the same document needs to be printed on two printers. My proposed solution: Create a single queue in CUPS with a backend script that spits the job out to the two real printers queues. My problem: Documentation. Maybe I'm looking at every ring around the bullseye, but I can't find anything that lays out the rules for writing a CUPS backend script. In the end, I have several questions: Is there already an option to do this in CUPS that I've missed? The line I use to add my queue is "lpadmin -p MultiPass -E -v multipass -P Generic PostScript Printer". But DeviceURI is bad unless I specify a directory like "-v multipass:/tmp". Why is this? For testing, my script does nothing but capture ARGV and write it out to a text file one line per argument. Problem is, I'm getting nothing. Logs show the job as successful, but I'm pretty sure my meager attempt at a backend isn't even being run. I've tried to keep this question brief, so please ask for more info as I'm sure I've left out the most important part in all this. Honestly, I'm just done chasing my own tail.   I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

• All-on-one-page print view in Plone

  We have a Plone 4 document that is in a hierarchy. At each node there's either a document, or a folder. Folders then have more documents and folders. We want to be able to print the entire hierarchy, which means rendering the whole thing on one page. I see a number of web sites like this one that seem to have something like this. Is it manually done or is there some add-on I can get to make this feature possible?
