• What's the best web entrepeneur's conference to go on

  Our dream as business partners was always to go to a conference overseas. Now that we can finally afford to, we have no clue of which one to go to. Which conference would you guys suggest from a web entrepeneur's point of view, if there were just one to go to? Perhaps something that included a bit of marketing, new thinking, innovation, inspiration. We were very keen on Google IO previously, but were concerned that it would be very Google product focused. • Can all code be represented as a series of Map / Filter / Reduce operations?

  I have recently been refactoring large chunks of code and replacing them with Linq queries. Removing the language bias - Linq is essentially a set of Map / Filter and Reduce operations that operate on a sequence of data. This got me thinking, how far would I theoretically be able to take this. Would I be able to rewrite the whole code base into a series (or even a single) of Map / Filter and Reduce operations. Unfortunately I get paid to do useful stuff, so I haven't been able to experiment much further, but I can't think of any code structure that couldn't be re structured as such. Side effected code can be dealt with via monads.. Even output is essentially mapping memory addresses to screen addresses. Is there anything that couldn't be (theoretically) rewritten as a Linq query?

• Best Practice to return responses from service

  I am writing a SOAP based ASP.NET Web Service having a number of methods to deal with Client objects. e.g: int AddClient(Client c) = returns Client ID when successful List GetClients() Client GetClientInfo(int clientId) In the above methods, the return value/object for each method corresponds to the "all good" scenario i.e. A client Id will be returned if AddClient was successful or a List< of Client objects will be returned by GetClients. But what if an error occurs, how do I convey the error message to the caller? I was thinking of having a Response class: Response { StatusCode, StatusMessage, Details } where Details will hold the actual response but in that case the caller will have to cast the response every time. What are your views on the above? Is there a better solution? ---------- UPDATED ----------- Is there something new in WCF for the above? What difference will it make If I change the ASP.NET Web Service to a WCF Service?

• Why does the use of interface-based programming appear to be limited to behaviour?

  I have been doing a little thinking about inheritance vs. realization vs. composition. I am not about to post the whole detail here. So I was wondering, when are not talking about supporting unit testing: Why does interface-based programming seem to focus upon the grouping of common behaviour, e.g., IPettable (for an animal), IEditable (for a user control), ISubmitable (for a form), etc. Why does the use of interface-based programming appear to be limited to behaviour when we could pragmatically group not so much on behaviour but on commonsense physical similarities which could have nothing to do with behaviour? It is not that there is some limiting feature within OOP; so how come?

  Hi I am a computer science student currently on an internship and I have been thinking more and more about looking into working for a company / places that is developing quantum computers/ing when I graduate. Here is my problem, I have a pretty solid grasp of mathematics involved in Comp Sci and enjoy learning about more Comp Sci theory but in doing some minor research about Quantum Computing it seems to me to be more about hardware and I have always leant more to the software side of things. I haven't studied any physics since high school so I am wondering if I would be suitable to work in such a field with a Comp Sci degree, is it a field more aimed at physicists?

• Advice on what to learn? [closed]

  Currently I work as a .NET C# programmer, quite fresh faced at that (only been working professionally for 8 months) I'm enjoying what I'm doing, but I'm now thinking ahead for other languages to learn. I've heard from quite a few seasoned developers that they reckon it's worth getting in to HTML5. Before I asked this question I read a few of the other questions similar to this, but most were dated back a few years. I'm wondering what your advice would be to an aspiring programmer, what I should avoid going for (i.e. as I understand it Flash is essentially going to be phased out due to HTML5) I was looking in to WPF and the more updated .NET technologies, but someone advised me that WPF stuff will probably be redundant in the future. • How to organize my 1000s of PDF?

  I have a huge collection of PDF. Mostly it consists of research papers, of self-created documents but also of scanned documents. Right now I drop them all in one folder and give them precise names with tags in the filename. But even that gets impractical, so I am looking for a PDF library management application. I am thinking of something like Yep for Mac, with the following features: PDF cover browsing (with large preview, larger than Nautilus allows) tagging of PDF (data should be readable cross-platform) possibility to share across network (thus rather flat files than database) if possible: cross-platform Mendeley seemed to be a good choice, but I am not only having academic papers and don't want to fill it all metadata that is required there. The only alternative I could find thus far is Shoka, but the features are limited and developments seems to have stopped already.

• Move site to new domain divided by language across subdomains

  I managed to find a nice domain for a fairly fledgling site of mine that actually hasn't been parked by scumbag squatters. Given the upcoming move I'm thinking I'd take the opportunity to split the content across subdomains according to language, much like wikipedia for example: current: www.old-domain.com/en/subject # English www.old-domain.com/subjecto # Spanish (default so not locale in url) proposed en.new-domain.com/subject es.new-domain.com/subjecto The advantage of doing this is a fairly competitive keyword such that I may wish to put a copy of my application on a Spanish slice in order to gain a few serp's. Also pure vanity. Google's webmaster tools allows me to move to the new domain and I can add the root domain and the subdomains but forward to only one. I'll 301 from the old domain appropriately but is there anything I should know about webmaster tools in this respect where effectively I'm moving to two addresses? (Feel free to dissuade me from doing this if it's a bad idea in comments.) I've now asked this same question on google's forums.

  I'm trying to work out how to use this function glTexCoordPointer. The man page states that I must set a pointer to the first element of the array that uses the texture cordinate. • Web App for storing and organize programming information?

  So, I've found myself, after several years of coding (I consider myself a coder, rather than a programmer) full of links and loose snippets and coding tips, all dispersed across the web. In such way it is barely usable, even when every bit is important or interesting. I thought of simply storing the links in delicious or something alike, but it's not really the links I want to keep, I just need the succinth info. So I was thinking to use some web app, something like a wiki, maybe much more simple, so I could access it though my mobile if I need it. I could code it, but as I stated it before, I'm more of a code monkey, and I'm sure my solution would be far from decent... Can anyone give me recommendations on this?

  Is there a phrase or word to describe an algorithim or programme is complete in that given any value for its arguments there is a defined outcome? i.e. all the ramifications have been considered whatever the context? A simple example would be the below function: function returns string get_item_type(int type_no) { if(type_no < 10) return "hockey stick" else if (type_no < 20) return "bulldozer" else return "unknown" } (excuse the dismal pseudo code) No matter what number is supplied all possibiblites are catered for. My question is: is there a word to fill the blank here: "get_item_type() is ______ complete" ? (The answer is not Turing Complete - that is something quite different - but I annoyingly always think of something as "Turing Complete" when I am thinking of the above).

• How do you know when to split an object method into 2 or more other methods?

  Hi, I know this is a very basic question, but I sometimes find myself struggling to figure out when to split a single object method into multiple methods. For example, I am trying to set up an ACL using Zend_Acl and Zend_Auth, as shown in this tutorial: http://devzone.zend.com/article/1665. However, I am wondering if the My_Plugin_Auth::preDispatch() method should invoke calls to a method called authenticate() and a method called authorize(), instead of having everything lumped in under preDispatch(). I was thinking that this would make the code more readable and encapsulate the logic into its smaller parts, but i'm not sure if this is reason enough.

  I'm a self-taught programmer, just in case this question is answered in CS 101. I've learned and used lots of languages, mostly for my own personal use, but occasionally for professional stuff. It seems that I'm always running into the same wall when I run into trouble programming. For example, I just asked a question on another forum about how to handle a pointer-to-array that was returned by a function. Initially I'm thinking that I simply don't know the proper technique that the designers of C++ set up to handle the situation. But from the answers and discussions that follow I see that I don't really get what happens when something is 'returned'. How deep a level of understanding of the programming process must a good programmer achieve?

  This is something I did for a bus travel company a long time ago, and I was never happy with the results. I was thinking about that old project recently and thought I'd revisit that problem. Problem: Bus travel company has several buses with different passenger capacities (e.g. 15 50-passenger buses, 25 30-passenger buses ... etc). They specialized in offering transportation to very large groups (300+ passengers per group). Since each group needs to travel together they needed to manage their fleet efficiently to reduce waste. For instance, 88 passengers are better served by three 30-passenger buses (2 empty seats) than by two 50-passenger buses (12 empty seats). Another example, 75 passengers would be better served by one 50-passenger bus and one 30-passenger bus, a mix of types. What's a good algorithm to do this?

• How to redirect visitors to the server that is closest to them and where to place the servers?

  I am focusing on providing fast page refreshes for my visitors and I wonder where is the smartest spot to place my servers on? I understand that the best would be to place a server in every country or even city, but that is of course not doable with my economy. I am thinking of maybe setting up three servers, one in the middle of USA (Kansas?), one in Italy and one in Sweden. What do you think about that? I don't care about Africa since they haven't even got computers so I won't get traffic from there anyway. China, North Korea etc are probably just visiting chinese websites, they barely know english anway... The next problem is how do I redirect a visitor from Finland to the Swedish server? I don't want the visitor from Finland to be using the USA server or vice versa.

• Application versioning

  Haven't find similar issue so sorry if thats a duplicate. I'm about to start a migration of an already existing project from one web container version to the another. Currently, the application version is 2.2.5. Business requirement is to deliver a 3.0 version by the end of the year. Additional constraint is to release a working, stable version by the end of Q3. We are about to work in 2-weeks sprints and I'm wondering how can I approach the problem? I was thinking about releasing 2.3 by the end of Q2, then immediately promoting it as 3.0-a1, work on alphas (3.0-a2, 3.0-a3, ...) till the end of Q3, to start with 3.0-b1 in the early Q4 and finally release 3.0 around December. I don't feel comfortable saying that the application is already in 3.0 state in July, but I can't see other options. If you find some book chapters/blogs or your personal experience interesting please share your opinion.

• Is it possible to have a mutable type that is not garbage collected?

  I'm wondering if such a thing can exist. Can there be an object that is mutable but not flagged as garbage collected ( specifically, tp_flags & Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_GC ) I have a C++ struct-like object that I'm writing and I'd like to know if all of its members are immutable. I'm thinking of checking for the Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_GC flag to determine this. If all members are immutable I want to speed up the deepcopy by doing a faster shallow copy, since I know members are immutable then it shouldn't have to go through an expensive deep copy. Is this logically sound, or is there some mythical type that will blow me out of the water here.

  So let's say I have a DB table with 8 columns, one is a unique auto-incrementing used as ID. So I have a page that pulls in the info for each row based on query string ID. I want to give my users the ability to propose changes. Kinda like a wiki setup. So I was thinking I should just have another duplicate table or maybe database altogether (without the auto-incrementing column and maybe with a date edited column) that keeps all proposed changes in queue and then when I approve them, the script can move the row from the proposed DB to the real DB. Does this sound good or is there a better process for this?

• Is the UX affected negatively by fully cacheable pages?

  I want to have fully cacheable pages in my websites, but one cannot do that if they contain user-specific data, like the userbar or things in the UI that can change depending on the permissions the user has. So I was thinking whether it was possible to pull everything that is user-specific via ajax, and update the UI accordingly. But I'm worried that this might be annoying for the user, and also it might be difficult to develop. What do you think? Is there a pattern or something I can follow to deal with this?

  Hi, What are the best free CMSs or CMS plugins or ERPs or any other free tools available for developing a hospital management system? I want to develop it for a children's hospital run by my father. The hospital is small with two doctors. Currently, everything is done manually on paper. The main entities who will be using the system are: Receptionist, the two doctors, chemist and the medical laboratorist. They will use it majorly for keeping the records of the patient. The patients would not be interacting with the system directly. The system needs to be user friendly and should be easy to learn.   I am creating a friendly url interpreter for my website. I have read dozens of similar topics on this site, but none that seem to address my particular situation. What I want to know is if it's better to have: A well broken down URL where each category is represented by a folder domain.com/1036/OR/Lane/Lowell/Wetleau-Subdivision -OR- A URL which groups all of the categories and terms together domain.com/1036/Wetleau-Subdivision-Lowell-OR-Lane I am asking only in terms of what is best for SEO, not necessarily human readability. My thinking is that it may be better to group them all together like they are in the second example. My reasoning being that all of those terms represent the page and are more likely to draw a result. I am a complete SEO nub though, and I crave some expert guidance. • How to use only intel graphics and power off radeon?

  I've been using Linux for quite a while in everyday computing and programming. But now i got this new laptop with amazing battery life on windows which runs pretty cool even while gaming. But for some reason on Ubuntu I get like 1/3 battery life and it gets hot even while browsing the web. I have the proprietary drivers for radeon, but I'm thinking about upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and I would like to know how can I use only the Intel graphics and have radeon always turned off? Since I do not need the discrete graphics on Ubuntu and I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the radeon sucking up my battery and generating heat. My laptop technical specifications are: Dell latitude 3540 Intel core i7 4500U (with Intel hd4400 graphics ) Ati Radeon HD 8850m with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3L @1600mhz Toshiba 256gb SSD Ubuntu 12.4.3 If you need any additional info, please tell me :)

  I'm trying to write a smallish system as a homework excercise, I don't have much experience with containers and I'm not sure the best way of storing this data would be: Incident Records object holds instants of Incident Report. Report is a superclass which has 3 subclasses, Police, Fire or Medical. Record must must record which of these types apply, and which response teams are to be involved. So Record has to keep track of the Report objects, the type of the report (Police, Fire or Medical) and the teams involved in the reports. • Attempting to install Ubuntu 11.10 along side Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Installer doesn't recognize an operating system present

  System Details: Asus Sabertooth 990FX motherboard AMD FX-8120 CPU 16 GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengance RAM (4x4) EVGA Nvidia GTX-560Ti video card 2x Dvd/cd rw dirves 1 Bluray RW drive 1 Orico USB 3.0 & eSata panel 1 Sabrent floppy bay card reader w/USB 2.0 port 760W pc power & cooling PS OCZ agility 120GB SSD (Windows 7 Professional 64bit installed in an approx 80gb partition, NTFS. There is also a "System Reserved" partition shown in disk management at 100mb in size, also NTFS) That leaves about 32GB usable free, un-partitioned space in which I hoped to install Ubuntu. However when I run the Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64 installer, it doesn't show there is even an operating system installed. It just shows the entire drive as free-unpartitioned space. Just not sure what to do here. I was thinking about using the Wubi installer, but i don't know about that. Is the performance reduction pretty drastic? Thanks,
