  I am getting the following error when trying to run winetricks vcrun2005. "vcrun2005 install completed, but installed file /home/compuz/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/winsxs/x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_x-ww_150c9e8b/mfc80.dll not found" I then tried the following command: winetricks dlls list | grep mfc80 This gave the following output: vcrun2005 Visual C++ 2005 libraries (mfc80,msvcp80,msvcr80) (Microsoft, 2011) [downloadable,cached] Here mfc80 is colored red. • Add Scheduled Task to reset search indexes for Exchange 2007

  I simply want to run a ResetSearchIndex -force on a schedule. What is the correct usage for the command in the Scheduled Task properties? • How to escape or remove double quotes in rsyslog template

  I want rsyslog to write log messages in JSON format, which requires to use double-quotes (") around strings. Problem is that values sometime include double-quotes themselves, and those need to be escaped - but I can't figure out how to do that. Currently my rsyslog.conf contains this format that I use (a bit simplified): $template JsonFormat,"{\"msg\":\"%msg%\",\"app-name\":\"%app-name%\"}\n",sql But when a msg arrives that contains double quotes, the JSON is broken, example: user pid=21214 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM setcred: user="oracle" exe="/bin/su" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=? result=Success)' turns into: {"msg":"user pid=21214 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM setcred: user="oracle" exe="/bin/su" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=? result=Success)'","app-name":"user"} but what I need it to become is: {"msg":"user pid=21214 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM setcred: user=\"oracle\" exe=\"/bin/su\" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=? result=Success)'","app-name":"user"}

• inetd / xinetd not working under cygwin

  I am trying to use xinetd (or inetd) with netcat to act as a TCP proxy. This setup works on Linux without issue. Under Cygwin, either as a service or from the a Cygwin command line, the (x)inetd fails to open netcat, with the error "no such file or directory". I have tried specifying /usr/bin/nc, /usr/bin/nc.exe, /cygdrive/d/cygwin/usr/bin/nc.exe, d:\cygwin\bin\nc.exe, and a TON of other combinations of forward flashes, backslashes, Windows paths and Cygwin paths. No matter what, I get errno 2, no such file or dir. Any ideas? I need this working ASAP. Edit: I thought it may have to do with it being in d:\cygwin (lame hardcoding?) but I tested it on a machine with cygwin on C:\, problem exists there too.

• Windows XP update not working

  I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website. But when installing IE8 it just hangs at Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP And if I try to install it manually, it hangs when installing the updates for IE8. So looking at these logs, is there anything going wrong with the update process?   I found this page that tells me how to set up Windows Live Sync as a background service on Windows 2003 Server, unfortunately the resource kit tools for 2003 that are mentioned does not work on 2008 server. http://mswhs.freeforums.org/windows-live-sync-as-a-service-on-whs-t623.html Also, apparently there is no resource kit tools downloadable for Windows 2008 Server that I can find. Perhaps someone has a link to the relevant tools? (INSTSRV.EXE and SRVANY.EXE.) Using just plain SC.EXE doesn't work as I assume that the program is then required to be a normal service, and not just any executable. What other options do I have? Can I use the task scheduler on 2008 server to start the WindowsLiveSync executable, will that work? I need the executable to stay running even after I've logged off from the server.

  Hi All, Having a strange issue with Windows Explorer on Windows 7 Professional. When I try to open it up under different user credentials, I get the following error message: Results are the same whether I try it from the context menu or by using runas /user:DOMAIN\User explorer.exe However, if I open up a command prompt (using runas.exe) the behavior is a bit different: typing in just explorer or explorer.exe results in the same error. typing in explorer C: or explorer /E,... doesn't run anything. I'm dropped right back to the prompt. explorer process doesn't start. Has anyone seen this behavior before? If so, how can I go about changing it. Thanks.

I could see one file being 1-3mb bigger then the other but 5 is pretty large. the m4a is almost 75% of the ogg! thats a lot! Why is this?

• Launch an arbitrary application with a specific icon

  I'm thinking about customizing my Windows 7's application icons, so that they all follow a specific theme (Token-like icons). This would involve using Resource Hacker (or similar) to patch each .exe. Not only this would be tiresome, but also it would require doing it again at each update of each application (nevermind that some could break just because it was tampered with). Instead, is there any way to launch an application with a specific icon? Ideally it would be something from the command-line (so I can make a shortcut), like this: launchwithicon.exe --app C:\myapp.exe --icon C:\myicon.ico Note that while it is possible to do something similar by setting the taskbar to "always combine, hide labels", I do not like this approach and instead am looking for something that works without combining the taskbar icons.

  I have a Windows 2012 Standard x64 RemoteApps RDWeb portal where I can launch apps. We have one remote app in particular which is RDP (mstsc.exe). Whenever a user launches it, they receive three different prompts--the second one is this alert (shown below). How can I get rid of this alert? I have other RemoteApps launching as well, and they do not throw errors or alerts like this one. And they are applications with the .exe extension, so I do not understand what is so unique about the RDP RemoteApp that would cause this alert. One thing perhaps worth mentioning is this particular RDP remote app points directly to the mstsc.exe executable residing on a particular session host/terminal server (as shown in the "From" value of the warning). As such, a gateway server would not be used to load-balance and choose the RDP client launched from a session host at random. This RDP RemoteApp is explicitly associated with one particular terminal server.

• "Snapping" when in RDP

  I am using mstsc.exe version 6.0 (Remote Desktop non-Metro version) from an XP machine and cannot get Windows 8 snapping to work. I can drag a metro app window to the left or right, but it doesn't stick, it just bounces back to full screen. The snap bars do not appear. The client PC has two monitors, each with a resolution of 1280x1024. While mstsc.exe 6.0 does have an option to use both monitors simultaneously in normal settings, I am launching it with spanning enabled: mstsc.exe /span So the effective resolution in the session is 2560x1024. Is there a trick to getting this to work over RDP?

  We have a windows file storage (don't ask) and now I want to rsync with the machine from Windows, Mac and Linux. So I installed freeSSHd (login shell is set to C:/cygwin64/bin/sh.exe), set up certificates and testing from Linux the test.dat has 0 bytes: ssh myuser@winmachinename "C:/cygwin64/bin/true.exe" > test.dat Even double checking with actual output works fine: ssh myuser@winmachinename "C:/cygwin64/bin/ls.exe" > test.dat Now, when I call rsync: rsync --progress -avz -e ssh myuser@winmachinename:/c/Users ~/test it fails with: protocol version mismatch -- is your shell clean? I have attempted to re-install the Java JDK and JRE without having any effect. I have also re-downloaded Eclipse Juno and run it as a 'fresh' startup which has until now worked initially yesterday

• Automating Nightly Build Installation?

  Every night a new build of my program is made and copied to a /Builds/ folder. I have a Windows machine that I want to have uninstall the program then install the latest version of the program from the /Builds/ folder. Currently the build results in two separate setup.exe files which are InstallShield installation wizard executables. I want this to happen every night after the build finishes: Uninstall first component. Uninstall second component. Install newest build of first component using setup.exe. Install newest build of second component using setup.exe. I figured that there probably already exists a software solution for automating installations like this. Are there any software solutions out there than can do what I need? Preferrably for free?

• Setting cmd with default command and user defined message

  On button click in a winform application I am executing cmd.exe file (Using system("cmd.exe");), which opens perfectly fine and displays the following: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 6.1.7601] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C: A\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WinformTest\WinformTest> What I want is when a user click the button, the cmd.exe open with default command and a message like this: Please change command options and press enter to get started experimenting C: A\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WinformTest\WinformTest> reduction -x 33554432 -i Notice a new command and a message is already there. Can anybody tell me how to go for this?

• PSKill does not run from VbScript

  We have a site on our local IIS6 Windows 2003 server that occasionally locks up, and we would like a VbScript to kill the process. It is located in the system32 folder. I'm running these tests on the local machine. For simplicity, my VbScript file simply has lines such as these: WScript.Echo "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WshShell.Run "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WScript.Echo "Killed Process" Obtained earlier in the script, W3WP.ProcessId contains the correct process ID. The script outputs to the screen: PSKill.exe 6884 But the line that is supposed to execute the command does nothing. If I type the command in, it works fine. Why does PsKill work fine when I type it, but not from VbScript?

• Why does explorer restart automatically when I kill it with Process.Kill?

  If I kill explorer.exe like this: private static void KillExplorer() { var processes = Process.GetProcessesByName("explorer"); Console.Write("Killing Explorer... "); foreach (var process in processes) { process.Kill(); process.WaitForExit(); } Console.WriteLine("Done"); } It restarts immediately. But if I use taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe, or kill it from the task manager, it doesn't restart. Why is that? What's the difference? How can I close explorer.exe from code without restarting it? Sure, I could call taskkill from my code, but I was hoping for a cleaner solution...
