  • SubWebFolder and mutliple bin folders with Website model?

    Hi, I am looking for some advice on how what is the best approach to subweb folders and having mutliple bin folders in the WebSite Project model. For adding new pages at a later stage without recompiling the core files of a website and without building a full fledged Plug-in framework api. I am aware of being able to drop in the compiled dlls into the main bin folder and to just copy over the new page files to a sub folder but I am looking for a more organized file/folder approach. Here is the how it was done with WAP: Moving the Code-Behind Assemblies/DLLs to a different folder than /BIN with ASP.NET 1.1 Multiple /bin folders in ASP.NET I should also mention that I see that I can still do it the old way with the website project model by making the adjustment to the config section mentioned here but I was wondering if that has any side affects.   • StreamReader ReadToEnd() after HttpWebRequest EndGetResponse() - most scalable?

    I am calling a RESTful web service in the back-end of some ASP.NET pages. I am using ASP.NET asynchronous pages, so under the hood I am using the methods: HttpWebRequest BeginGetResponse() and HttpWebRequest EndGetResponse() The response string in my case is always a JSON string. I use the following code to read the entire string: using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(myHttpWebResponse.GetResponseStream())) { myObject.JSONData = sr.ReadToEnd(); } Is this method OK in terms of scalability? I have seen other code samples that instead retrieve the response data in blocks using Read(). My primary goal is scalability, so this back-end call can be made across many concurrent page hits.   • Regex slow on Windows Server 2008

    Hi I have a situation where my regular expressions compile extremely slowly on Windows Server 2008. I wrote a small console application to highlight this issue. The app generates its own input and builds up a Regex from words in an XML file. I built a release version of this app and ran it both on my personal laptop (running XP) and the Windows 2008 server. The regular expression took 0.21 seconds to compile on my laptop, but 23 seconds to compile on the server. Any ideas what could be causing this? The problem is only on first use of the Regex (when it is first compiled - thereafter it is fine) I have also found another problem - when using \s+ in the regular expression on the same Windows 2008 server, the memory balloons (uses 4GB+) and the compilation of the Regex never finishes. Is there a known issue with Regex and 64 bit .net? Is there a fix/patch available for this? I cannot really find any info on the net, but I have found a few articles about this same issues in Framework 2.0 - surely this has been fixed by now? More info: The server is running the 64 bit version of the .net framework (3.5 SP1) and on my laptop I have Visual Studio 2008 and the 3.5 framework installed.   • Why doesn't the AdditionalLibPaths parameter work in MSBuild?

    I am trying to specify an additional folder to look for references when doing a command-line compile with MSBuild. The command line is as follows: msbuild C:\LUR.NET\LurReports.sln /t:Rebuild /p:AdditionalLibPaths=C:\Radio;TargetFrameworkVersion=v2.0 For whatever reasons, msbuild completely ignores the C:\Radio folder when looking for references. What am I missing here? P.S. I should mention that this box does not have Visual Studio installed. And the .sln is in version VS2008 and I am compiling it against .NET 2.0. P.S. I also tried placing double quotes around the path. Did not make a difference.

  • Getting IIS Worker Process Crash dumps

    I'm doing something bad in my ASP.NET app. It could be the any number of CTP libraries I'm using or I'm just not disposing something properly. But when I redeploy my ASP.NET to my Vista IIS7 install or my server's IIS6 install I crash an IIS worker process. I've narrowed the problem down to my HTTP crawler, which is a multithreaded beast that crawls sites for useful information when asked to. After I start a crawler and redeploy the app over the top, rather than gracefully unloading the appDomain and reloading, an IIS worker process will crash (popping up a crash message) and continue reloading the app domain. When this crash happens, where can I find the crash dump for analysis?

  • DateTime: Require the user to enter a time component

    Checking if a user input is a valid date or a valid "date + time" is easy: .NET provides DateTime.TryParse (and, in addition, VB.NET provides IsDate). Now, I want to check if the user entered a date including a time component. So, when using a German locale, 31.12.2010 00:00 should be OK, but 31.12.2010 shouldn't. I know I could use DateTime.TryParseExact like this: Dim formats() As String = {"d.M.yyyy H:mm:ss", "dd.M.yyyy H:mm:ss", _ "d.MM.yyyy H:mm:ss", "d.MM.yyyy H:mm:ss", _ "d.M.yyyy H:mm", ...} Dim result = DateTime.TryParseExact(userInput, formats, _ Globalization.CultureInfo.CurrentCulture, ..., result) but then I would hard-code the German format of specifying dates (day dot month dot year), which is considered bad practice and will make trouble should we ever want to localize our application. In addition, formats would be quite a large list of all possible combinations (one digit, two digits, ...). Is there a more elegant solution?

    Using VS 2010, with ASP.NET, and .NET 3.0, and C#... When I use a System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource and call its Insert() method to insert a new row, and that table has an identity column, I'd like my method to return the value of that column. For example, in my SQL 2005 table, I've got: Customer.Id Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Where Customer.Id is an identity colum. When I call my method InsertNewCustomerRecord( "John", "Smith" ), I'd like to be able to return the Customer.Id that gets automatically generated in the database.     To me, Visual Basic seems clumsy, ugly, error-prone, and difficult to read. I'll let others explain why. While VB.net has clearly been a huge leap forward for the language in terms of features, I still don't understand why anyone would choose to code in VB over, say, C#. However, I still see (what seems to be) the vast majority of commercial web apps from "MS shops" are built in VB. I could stand corrected on this, but VB still seems more popular than it deserves. Can anyone help answer any (or all) of these questions: Am I missing something with VB? Is it easier to learn, or "friendlier" than C#? Are there features I don't know about? Why is VB/VB.net so frequently used today, especially in web projects?

  • mybase.showdialog event fired without apparent reason

    Hi, i'm new to vb .net and oop although i have learned the basics. I'm working in VB and .NET CF 3.5 and i'm trying to pass and received a value with showdialog. The issue here is when i'm done with a procedure in Load, for some reason MyBase.Showdialog (line 3) gives an error of "NullReferenceException was unhandled", but the same procedure doesn't have anything to do with Showdialog. Also, this same error happens with me in other forms when i use AlphaImageButton from AlphaMobileControls. I even created an custom AlphaImageButton with a DialogResult Property and set it to None with no avail.   • RegEx: Split String at Capitalized Letters and Non-capitalized letters to Create Small Cap Fonts

    So i've purposefully stayed away from RegEx as just looking at it kills me...ugh. But now I need it and could really use some help to do this in .NET (C# or VB.NET). I need to split a string based on capitalization or lack thereof. For example: I'm not upPercase "I" "'m not up" "P" "ercase" or FBI Agent Winters "FBI A" "gent " "W" "inters" The reason I'm doing this is to manually create small caps, in which non-capitalized strings will be sent to uppercase and their font size made 80% of the original font size. Appreciate any help that could be provided here.

    Is it legal / ethical to copy code for any reason, or utilize it (like code review) from the .Net framework or any other .Net based API using Reflector or similar tools ? If it is, what advantages do Microsoft and other licence based softwares have for packing there code ? If it is not, Why can we use ILDasm and Reflector ?   • Retrieving cached data from existing Crystal Reports file

    Is there any way to retrieve the cached data from a previously refreshed report and say, dump it to a file? Basically, I'm looking for the dataset that is being used by the report, and hand-dragging each field onto the canvas or even exporting the file doesn't quite get me where I want. I'm not particular to a specific solution, be it .NET, vbscripting or even within the program itself... I'm not overly familiar with the Crystal Report object model, nor .NET, but it seems like with a setting like "EnableSaveDataWithReport", there ought to be a straightforward way.   • Do I need the bin\debug\appName.vshost.exe and appName.vshost.manifest in my SVN code repository?

    I am building an application which is based on a sample application, written in C# on .NET 2, and is built on VS2008. This application is mostly a wrapper for a COM application. However I compile it in .NET 3.5. The sample application came with the following files in it's bin\debug: appName.vshost.exe appName.vshost.exe.manifest I noticed that I can delete the files and VS re-builds vshost.exe, and the vshost.manifest file appears with modification date the same as the deleted file as if VS has copied in from somewhere. My question is, should I put this files in my SVN code repository?

Does the socket really get closed? Are there side effects? P.S. This is using C# 3.0 on the .NET MicroFramework, but I suppose the c#, the language, should function identically. The reason i am asking is that occasionally, very rarely, I run out of sockets (which is a very precious resource on a .NET MF devices).

    I realise that there are many older questions addressing the general question of NUnit v MSTest for versions of Visual Studio up to 2008 (such as this one). Microsoft have a history of getting things right in their 3rd version. For MSTest, that is VS2010. Have they done so with MSTest? Would you use it in a new project in preference to NUnit? My specific concerns: speed running tests within CruiseControl.NET (either commandline or MSBuild task) code coverage reports from CC.NET can you run MSTest tests in debug mode (We use ReSharper, so test-runners are not an issue for us. We have used NUnit for the last few years. We do not have TFS.)

  • WindowsIdentity Token in Legacy ASP

    I've created a .Net library at work that is used by all of our developers. The security part of it uses Microsoft AzMan for the security backend. In order to create a security (AzMan) ClientContext I have to pass it a token value (as a uint). This is all fine an dandy until I needed to make a COM wrapper for our common library so some of our legacy pages could take advantage of it without being rewritten for now. I cannot figure out how to get the token value to pass to AzMan from legacy ASP. The COM wrapper is setup to run as a COM Server and runs as a specific user that we use here for all COM objects, therefor the common library can't just pull the identity using .Net. Any ideas?

Simplifying things, on the .NET side of things we have a struct that wraps a ulong like this: public struct MyStruct { private ulong _val; public override string ToString() { return _val.ToString("x16"); } // Parse method } I want the Flex client to treat this as a string. So that for the following server method: public void DoStuff(int i, MyStruct b); It can call it as DoStuff(1, "1234567890ABCDEF") I've tried playing with custom WebORB serializers, but the documentation is a bit scarce. Is this possible? If so how?

  • Why does MSBuild fail from the command line where VS2008 succeeds?

    I have an ASP.NET solution that builds just fine from within VS2008. However , it fails when i do this : MSBUILD.exe c:\path-to-sln It fails with a CS0006 error ("Metadata file 'dll_name' could not be found"). It also fails when I try with a .csproj of a project within the solution. What is VS2008 doing that MSBuild is missing ? It is my understanding that VS knows about inter assembly dependencies that MSBuild cant. Is there any way I can inform MSBuild of these? (I need MSBuild to work from the command line because I am calling it from an MSBuild-Task from within CruiseControl.Net.) Thanks in Advance. :3) (I have looked at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/280559/how-to-get-cmd-line-build-command-for-vs-solution , but still dont get it)
