• How to clear unshown OSD notifications

  I am a webmaster of 2 active websites. Every time I start Thunderbird, it downloads all the new messages from the admin mail addresses of these sites - info@site.com, contact@site.com, webmaster@site.com, etc. There are about 20 of them - this includes my personal email accounts. Now, am not always connected to the internet and there arises cases where I need to access already downloaded mails. Thunderbird then tries to connect to the internet, which it can't coz am offline, and then displays about twenty OSD notifications, one after the other, telling me that connection for each email address has failed. That's frustrating and it really eating me up. Am looking for a way, either: 1. To tell Thunderbird NOT to connect to the internet when am offline, or 2. To clear all these notifications after like the first one shows. And if it will help, am using ubuntu 13.04 and Thunderbird 24.0 and I always keep my computer fully updated. Any help is welcome. • Why do my websites have a first page rank on Bing and Yahoo but not Google? [closed]

  I have 3 websites suffering from a drop in ranking with Google and hence a huge drop in traffic. The instant drop ocurred in September and I have not been able to remedy it. For the past 6-10 years my main website http://LearnToSail.Net has ranked from #3 to #1 on the 1st page of Google and all the other engines with the search term "learn to sail" Now it shows on the 1st page of Bing and Yahoo but does not show up on ANY pages of Google. The only way it does come up is if I add "cd" to the "learn to sail" phrase. We sell a sailing cd on that website. The other websites are http://LearnToSailOnLine.com ..search terms are "learn to sail online" or learntosailonline and historyofthepilgrims.com search terms are "history of the pilgrims" "historyofthepilgrims" I get the same result. Gone on Google but 1st pages for Bing and Yahoo. I have researched, edited,updated blogs, made sitemaps, prayed to the universe and use Google Webmaster tools but nothing is changing and I have lost alot of business. I host with 1and1.com and have been back and forth with them but to no avail and no change in traffic. I thought maybe some DNS mapping was off. I used to have alot of traffic now I have hardly any. • Redirecting 2 or more domains to same hosting server

  I have domains A.com, A.co.in and A.in Purchased from site X. I have a hosting space/account purchased from site Y, which has provided me with 2 DNS entries that is to be replaced in the account at the site from where I purchase the domains. I have successfully changed the DNS entries of A.com to these 2 DNS entries and I am able to see my index.html page when I hit A.com. Problem On similar lines, I have changed the DNS entries to the same entries for A.co.in and A.in, but on hitting those sites in browser gives me no response and browser specific page of 'Site not found' is been seen. Please let me know, how to set this, so that when I hit any of the domain, the web-site is rendered from the hosting server? What am I doing wrong here? Note It has been more than 3 days after changing the DNS entries, so I don't think so this is a problem of DNS propagation, which I heard from some people. Please provide some detail explanation, as I am very very new to this. This is my first hosting ;) -Thanks

• Blogger Blog Takes Ages to Load after Custom Domain Redirection

  I recently bought a custom domain for a blogger blog (technabled.com) I have for sometime now. I followed the instructions on blogger's documentation. I added A-name records and CNAME records with my DNS provider. But, now, some strange problems are cropping up. If I connect to my broadband network and then ping technabled.com, it times out. Then, if I visit the webpage, which takes almost one and half minutes to load, and then if I ping technabled.com, it shows expected result. This is not just me. I asked some of the regular readers, who reported the same issue. As a result of this, I am losing a lot of visits. What is stranger is that the subsequent visits to the blog is faster. I have checked with a few online services to test the performance. WebPageTest seems to say the same thing: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/110117_1N_7PE/ (please see the First View / Repeat View time) Also, the pagespeed score is not that bad. So I am ruling out other possibilities. I am at a loss as to what I should do to find a solution. Help is much appreciated. :)

• Javascript widgets: do links count as SEO backlinks? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How good is it for SEO if you have a widget that lives on other sites? On my website I offer an option to let users embed information from my site with some kind of "homepage widget". If a user wants to embed it in his website, he basically has to add one line of Javascript to his HTML files like this: <script src="http://mysite.com/myscript.php?some_options_here"></script> Inside the widget, I export some content from my website and of course create a link back to my website. This is done in Javascript with document.write. document.writeln("My great exported content"); document.writeln('<a href="http://mysite.com?ref=widget>Check mysite.com</a>'); I have Google Analytics set up to track whether the links in there get clicked, and they do. Now I am asking myself if Google recognizes these links as valid backlinks from the embedding domain. I know that Googlebot can parse and execute Javascript, but I have not found any references whether these links also count as "normal" backlinks.

• Cannot boot after installing ubuntu on lenovo x120e

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my x120e using amd64 alternate iso image. The installation went fine, but it is having issues while booting after a successful installation, it says - "No Operating System Found". I followed the instruction at - help.ubuntu.com/community/X120e#Installation to purge grub-efi and installed grub-pc, even then I couldn't boot into ubuntu.(got the same "No Operating System Found") This is the file from boot-repair with this setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926556/ Then I asked in #ubuntu and they suggested me to create a bios-boot partition, I was not very comfortable with the solution they had suggested but gave it a try anyhow. I re-sized my initial partition and made 4 MB free space in the beginning of the partition and had set the flag bios_grub. Re-installed ubuntu 11.10 this time using amd64 desktop iso image file. Installation went fine as before but finally this time also the system didn't boot, it gave the same - "No Operating System Found" message. In BIOS I have the settings as to use both (Legacy and UEFI) and with UEFI tried first. • 301 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS - how to be sure Google is fetching the correct information?

  I'm hoping somebody might be able to provide a bit of advice on an issue I am having. I have one site where we implemented a 301 redirect on the homepage from HTTP to HTTPS. We have links on the homepage to other parts of the site that are not under SSL (in fact there is only one other page under SSL). When I go to our Webmaster Tools account I notice that we are not being provided with any webmaster information (e.g., search queries, backlinks, etc...) related to our homepage under SSL. • Advertising on personalized pages behind a login

  I am currently building a web app which requires a user to log in. After they log in, they can see the content they've added to the web app, and things that the web app has done with the content they added. The URL structure won't differentiate different users (e.g. all user's 'homepage' would be example.com/home, not something like example.com/username/home). This is much the same way that Facebook works (all FB user's messages are at facebook.com/messages, for example). This presents a problem with advertising. I know that you can use AdSense behind a login, but as far as I'm aware, that's for things like forums, where everyone sees the same things (which wouldn't be the case in this site). I also know that I could put AdSense on the pages without allowing it to log in, which would produce inferior ads. I'm fairly certain it would be against the Terms of Service to give AdSense a login to a 'dummy' account with typical content, as it would not be seeing the same thing as every other user (which is impossible, as they all see different things). So, my question is: Is there an ad network, or other method, that can serve ads behind a login, maybe based on keywords rather than content?

• Can too many 301 redirects cause a DNS error?

  For a site http://imageocd.com that I just set up I initially spelled the category "automobiles" as "autimobiles"... I know it's rediculous. I then set up over 10,000 pages behind that category e.g. http://imageocd.com/automobiles/hillman-minx-cabrio-pictures-and-wallpapers. So, I set up over 10,000 301 url redirects to change the spelling on automobiles. I just checked my Google Webmasters report and got an error saying: http://www.imageocd.com/: Googlebot can't access your siteSep 7, 2012 Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 66.7%. Could the overabundance of 301 redirects be causing this? I host 13 sites on this dedicated server and all sites are running fine. I also contacted GoDaddy and they said the server is running fine. Any ideas on what might be going on? Also, I have "canonical" set up for every URL. Could this be part of the error? Thanks.

• No operating system found even when grub2 was reinstalled

  I know there have been many variations on this question and have certainly tried to do my research. I don't really know what I'm doing so I would rather not take risks. I am trying to dual boot xubuntu and windows 7. I started out with xubuntu and just installed windows. Of course, the mbr got overwritten and windows didn't seem to recognize linux. So I booted to the live cd and rewrote the mbr. And of course, now I get the error "No Operating System Found" on startup. I have been following these tutorials to help me out. community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/245 unix.stackexchange.com/questions/96977/grub-wont-install ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2036730 Specifically, I ran these commands: # sdb2 is the partition with xubuntu sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt # sdb1 is my boot partition sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/boot # not sure what this does, but ran it anyway... for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done sudo chroot /mnt #once chrooted grub-install /dev/sdb update-grub here's a link to my gparted https://www.dropbox.com/s/zpbbzh9z7k1l3pj/gparted.png EDIT--- didn't realize that the drive letters are different in the picture than in my code (its sda in the pic instead of sdb). • How can I fix the #c3284d# malvertising hack on my website?

  For the past couple of weeks at semi regular intervals, this website has had the #c3284d# malware code inserted into some of its .php files. Also the .htaccess file had its equivelant code inserted. I have, on many occasions removed the malicious code, replaced files, changed the ftp password on my ftp client (which is CoreFTP), changed the connection method to FTPS for more secure storage of the password (instead of plain text). I have also scanned my computer several times using AVG and Windows Defender which have found no malware on my computer which might have been storing my ftp passwords. I used Sucuri SiteCheck to check my website which says my website is clean of malware which is bizarre because I just attempted to click one of the links on the site a minute ago and it linked me to another one of these random stats.php sites, even though it appears I have gotten rid of the #c3284d# code again (which will no doubt be re-inserted somehow in an hour or so).. Has anyone found an actual viable solution for this malware hack? I have done just about all of the things suggested here and here and the problem still persists. Currently when I click on a link within the sites navigation menu within Google Chrome I get googles Malware warning page: Warning: Something's Not Right Here! oxsanasiberians.com contains malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site. Google has found that malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed. Why not try again tomorrow or go somewhere else? We have already notified oxsanasiberians.com that we found malware on the site. I'm wondering if it is possible that the Google Chrome browser I am using has itself been hacked? Does anyone else get re-directed when clicking links on the the website?

• How to make the internal subwoofer work on an Asus G73JW?

  I have an Asus G73JW laptop which has an internal subwoofer built-in. Currently, the system detects the internal speakers as a 2.0 system (or I can change do 4.0 is the only other option). I found a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/673051 which discusses the bug and according to them a fix was sent upstream back at the end of 2010. I would have thought this would have made it into 12.04 but I guess not? • How should I structure a site with content dependent on visitor type (not user)?

  I have a website that displays different content depending on two selections made by a visitor: Whether they are a teacher or student, and their learning level (from 4 options). Everything is public and they don't need to authenticate to access the content. Depending on their selection, different content is displayed across the whole site, other than a contact and about page. The tone of the language changes depending on whether the visitor is a student or teacher and the materials available on each page also change depending on the learning level, however in all cases, the structure of the site is identical. Currently I'm using a cookie to store the visitor's selections and render different content appropriately, so I have a single set of URLs which display different content depending on the cookie, with one of the permutations as default. I appreciate this is far from ideal, but what is the better option? Would I be better using a distinguishing segment for each selection, for example: http://example.com/teacher/lv3/resources/activities http://example.com/teacher/lv4/resources/activities http://example.com/student/lv4/resources/activities etc. What is the most sensible way to handle this situation?

• Somehow Google considers a properly 301'd URL as 200 and is still indexing the new content in old page?

  We redirected all the old URL's to new ones properly using htaccess. The problem is Google, somehow is still finding content in the old page(which it shouldn't) and stores it in the cache rather than the new URL. For eg: Old Page- http://www.natures-energies.com/iching.htm New Page- http://www.natures-energies.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=760 If you type the old URL into the browser it redirects If you fetch the old URL as Googlebot in the webmaster tools the header says 301/permanently redirected. If I try to crawl as any other bot it still says 301 redirected. Even if you click the old link in Google it redirects to the new URL. Only in its cache it shows the old URL and moreover it shows the new content in it! I am stumped on how Google manages to grab the new content and puts in the old URL instead of the new one! One more interesting thing is that if I try a cache for the new page it shows the cache of the new content with old URL! Any help would be appreciated. I am at end of my wits. I think i have tried almost everything. Is there anything that I'm missing to see? You can use this search to find the old url's. • Network/browser issues after upgrade to 12.04

  I let my laptop upgrade to 12.04. And have no network afterwards. I went through all the articles I could find in google. Right now, I can ping google, and yahoo, but not cnn.com for example or anything else. Firefox says it can't reach google.com or gmail.com (or anything, not even IP. /etc/network/interfaces dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 <<<<<added auto lo iface lo inet loopback /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf #prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4; prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; <<<<< tried both /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf with and without dns=dnsmasq commented out. I can ping my wireless router and connect to it just fine. Have tried proxy/noproxy. This looks like After Upgrade to 12.04 - cannot connect to network but no answer there. I would hate to do a fresh install. Any assistance appreciated.

  I know a similar question has been asked, but I really don't know what to do. There is this .com domain which is currently on redemption period and should likely be available again within a month. I was wondering which is the best way to get it at a reasonable price. I don't think it's a highly valuable domain, it shows to have very bad ranking and has 0 exact same searches according to adwords. Why it is valuable to me is very simple: I have a project responding to this name. I already own the .net domain and would love to have the .com. I discovered the domain was going to be available thanks to an email I received by a backorder site. I did some research and these guys have a bad reputation on the web. I did further research and found that more reputable (at least in theory) companies should be the likes of snapnames, pool, namejet, godaddy, etc. I am a bit suspicious using these drop cathing services: What if they shill bids? What if they make it go into auction even if I'm the only person interested? What if I raise attention and interest to the domain by backordering? I just would rather wait for it to be deleted and available again to register it manually. It is really not an interesting domain name, and I don't think anyone would care to have it. But what if the domain is already being watched by the domain industry sharks? I did a whois research and my desired domain nameserves point to domcollect.com, which appears to be an auction site. What if I decide to wait for manual registration and I miss the chance to get it? I'm willing to spend the 60/70$ fees these sites require, but not really more than that. Suggestions? Thank you very much. I'm a bit confused and undecided.

• What is the correct way to code incoming links for SEO?

  Our site is giving out 'badges' to our authors. They can post these on their personal blogs and they will serve as incoming links to our site. We want to give out the best possible code for SEO without doing anything that would get us flagged. I would like to know what you're thoughts are on the following snippet of code and if anyone has any DEFINITE advice on dos and donts with it. Also, let me know if any of it is redundant or not worth it for SEO purposes. I've kept the css inline since some of the writers would not have access to add link to external CSS. • mod_rewrite not working after upgrade to 12.10

  I'm hoping this is a quick and simple fix and that I just need a fresh set of eyes. However, I'm fearful that it might actually be an error in the latest build of the rewrite module. I have a .htaccess file that turns on the rewrite engine (I've made sure the module is enabled), creates some rewrite conditions, and finally a rewrite rule. Here's my .htaccess file for reference: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?request=$1 [L,QSA,NC] </IfModule> Now for the problem: if I go to hostname.com it works fine. If I go to hostname.com/Index it works fine. However, if I go to hostname.com/index it doesn't rewrite the request and I get a 404. I'm not sure what's going on here. I've used a rewrite rule tester and there doesn't appear to be any issues with my rewrite rule itself. Again, this issue didn't manifest until after I upgraded to 12.10, at which point I know that Apache was updated. Any thoughts? Has anyone else here experienced this? I know that two other people besides myself have experienced this here. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
