• How to find out the installation path to my browser?

  I am installing a proprietary CAD application (MEDUSA4 personal) and the installer wants to know the path to my web browser (as a prerequisite for online help). I have the default firefox installation and chromium, but I don't know the installation path for any of them, and couldn't find them among the usual suspects (/usr/bin, /usr/lib). It would be nice if you could tell me the path to one of them, and even nicer if you can tell me how to find out the installation path to any package managed by apt.

• Encapsulating code in F# (Part 2)

  In part one of this series I showed an example of encapsulation within a local definition. This is useful to know so that you are aware of the scope of value holders etc. but what I am more interested in is encapsulation with regards to generating useful F# code libraries in .Net, this is done by using Namespaces and Modules. Lets have a look at some C# code first… using System; namespace EncapsulationNS { public class EncapsulationCLS { public static void TestMethod() { Console.WriteLine("Hello"); } } } Pretty simple stuff… now the F# equivalent…. namespace EncapsulationNS module EncapsulationMDL = let TestFunction = System.Console.WriteLine("Hello") ()   Even easier… lets look at some specifics about F# namespaces… Namespaces are open. meaning you can have multiple source files and assemblies can contribute to the same namespace. So, Namespaces are a great way to group modules together, so the question needs to be asked, what role do modules play. For me, the F# module is in many ways similar to the vb6 days of modules. In vb6 modules were separate files and simply allowed us to group certain methods together. I find it easier to visualize F# modules this way than to compare them to the C# classes. However that being said one is not restricted to one module per file – there is flexibility to have multiple modules in one code file however with my limited F# experience I would still recommend using the file as the standard level of separating modules as it is very easy to then find your way around a solution. An important note about interop with F# and other .Net languages. I wrote a blog post a while back about a very basic F# to C# interop. If I were to reference an F# library in a C# project (for instance ‘TestFunction’), in C# it would show this method as a static method call, meaning I would not have to instantiate an instance of the module.

• Remote connection to Mysql not working

  We have an application running with CodeIgniter and MySQL in cestacerta.com. Ther are two versions: One that is in production and it works perfectly, and one that is our Development version. This runs locally on my machine and the other developers. The development version needs to remotely connect to the database, and it rather suddenly stopped working. I've given permission to access any IP settings on the server. I can access the database through the MySQL Gui Tools. I have tested access to several different codes, including a newly downloaded version of CodeIgniter and always got the same error: "A Database Error Occurred Unable to connect to your database server using the provided settings. Filename: C: \ xampp \ htdocs \ cestacerta \ system \ database \ DB_driver.php Line Number: 119 " What troubleshooting steps can I take determine if the error is on our workstations (which all have the same error) or on our server.

• Is it possible to have a scheduled task click a button in Windows?

  One of my clients has an application that can not be run from command line or via API but needs to be run on an scheduled basis. It would require that I launch the application if it's not already running and then click a button. This task would exist on a server. I had read about AutoHotKey but it doesn't sound like it can click buttons from a Scheduled Task. Does anyone have ideas on how to do this? NOTE: As I answered below... I know this is a hack. It would be better to have an app that can actually be scheduled to run. Unfortunately (for me) this application isn't going to be replaced as it is connected to the client's beloved inventory management system and the entire deal is proprietary. So I just need to find an option to attempt this (might not be completely reliable I know). Thanks.

• What are different ways to reduce latency between a server and a web application? [closed]

  this is a question about a web application that provides SOAP web services. For the sake of this question, this web app is hosted on a server SERVER B which is located in California. We have an automated, scheduled, process running on a server SERVER A, located in New York. This scheduled process is supposed to send SOAP messages to SERVER B every so often, but this process typically dies soon after starting. We have now been told by the vendor that reason why the process dies is because of the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. The data traffic is routed through many diffent public networks. There is no dedicated line between SERVER A and SERVER B. As a result I have been asked to look into ways to reduce the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. So I wanted to ask, what are the different ways to reduce latency in a situation like this? For example, would it help to switch from HTTPS to some other secure protocol? (the thought here is that perhaps some other alternative would require fewer handshakes than HTTPS). Or would a VPN help? If a VPN would reduce the latency, how would it do that? NOTE: I am not looking for an explicit answer that would work in my specific situation. I am more like looking just for a simple list of what technologies could be used for this. I will still have to evaluate the technologies and discuss them internally with others, so the list would just be a starting point. Here I am assuming that there exists very few ways to reduce latency between two servers that communicate across public networks using HTTPS. Feel free to correct me if this assumption is wrong and please ask if there is a need for specific information. NOTE 2: A list of technologies is a specific answer to the question I stated in the title. NOTE 3: Its rather dumb to close this question when it is after all about me looking for information and furthermore this information can clearly be useful for others. • Silverlight Binding with multiple collections

  We're designing some sport specific applications. In one of our views we have a gridview that is bound to an observable collection of Teams. This is pretty straight forward in terms of getting Teams bound to the GridView. <telerik:RadGridView Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="0" x:Name="UsersGrid" ItemsSource="{Binding TeamResults}" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedTeam, Mode=TwoWay}"> <telerik:RadGridView.Columns> <telerik:GridViewDataColumn Header="Name/Group" DataMemberBinding="{Binding TeamName}" MinWidth="150"></telerik:GridViewDataColumn> </telerik:RadGridView.Columns> </telerik:RadGridView> We use the observable collection of teams as our items source and then bind the property of TeamName to the first column. You can set the binding to mode=TwoWay, we use a dialog where we edit the selected item, so our binding here is not set to two way. The issue comes when we want to bind to a property that has another collection in it. To continue on our code from above, we have an observable collection of teams, within that collection we have a collection of KeyPeople. We get this collection using RIA Serivces with the code below. return _TeamsRepository.All().Include("KeyPerson"); Here we are getting all the teams and also including the KeyPerson entity. So when we are done with our Load we will end up with an observable collection of Teams with a navigation property / entity of KeyPerson. Within this KeyPerson entity is a list of people associated with that particular team. We want to display the head coach from this list of KeyPersons. This list currently has a list of ten or more people that are bound to this team, but we just want to display the Head Coach in the column next to team name. The issue becomes how do we bind to this included entity? I have found about three different ways to solve this issue. The way that seemed to fit us best is to utilize the features within RIA Services. We can create client side properties that will do the work for us. We will create in the client side library a partial class of Team. We will end up in our library a file that is Team.shared.cs. The code below is what we will put into our partial team class. public KeyPerson Coach        {            get            {                if (this.KeyPerson != null && this.KeyPerson.Any())                { return this.KeyPerson.Where(x => x.RelationshipType == “HeadCoach”).FirstOrDefault(); }                 return null;            }        } We will return just the person that is the Head Coach and then be able to bind that and any other additional properties that we need. <telerik:GridViewDataColumn Header="Coach" DataMemberBinding="{Binding Coach.Name}" MinWidth="150"></telerik:GridViewDataColumn> There are other ways that we could have solved this issue but we felt that creating a partial class through RIA Services best suited our needs.

• backuppc - how to backup remote (over the internet) clients?

  I am testing out backuppc, which works great so far backing up windows clients on a LAN via SMB (no backup client/agent required). However I have quite a few laptops and desktops that are in various remote locations - some of which move around. I need some way to have that remote computer create an outgoing connection for backup purposes (Windows XP/7). I know backuppc supports smb, rsync and 'tar', but I believe these are all connections going from the server TO the client. SO, I either need a way to vpn the client on a timed basis, or it would be a lot better if the client could some how connect to the server (ssh?) and initiate it's own backup somehow (rsync?). Of course this all needs to be pre-installed by me and require no maintenance by the end user, no dialogs on their side. What do you think?

• How far should one take e-mail address validation?

  I'm wondering how far people should take the validation of e-mail address. My field is primarily web-development, but this applies anywhere. I've seen a few approaches: simply checking if there is an "@" present, which is dead simply but of course not that reliable. a more complex regex test for standard e-mail formats a full regex against RFC 2822 - the problem with this is that often an e-mail address might be valid but it is probably not what the user meant DNS validation SMTP validation As many people might know (but many don't), e-mail addresses can have a lot of strange variation that most people don't usually consider (see RFC 2822 3.4.1), but you have to think about the goals of your validation: are you simply trying to ensure that an e-mail address can be sent to an address, or that it is what the user probably meant to put in (which is unlikely in a lot of the more obscure cases of otherwise 'valid' addresses). An option I've considered is simply giving a warning with a more esoteric address but still allowing the request to go through, but this does add more complexity to a form and most users are likely to be confused. While DNS validation / SMTP validation seem like no-brainers, I foresee problems where the DNS server/SMTP server is temporarily down and a user is unable to register somewhere, or the user's SMTP server doesn't support the required features. How might some experienced developers out here handle this? Are there any other approaches than the ones I've listed? Edit: I completely forgot the most obvious of all, sending a confirmation e-mail! Thanks to answerers for pointing that one out. Yes, this one is pretty foolproof, but it does require extra hassle on the part of everyone involved. The user has to fetch some e-mail, and the developer needs to remember user data before they're even confirmed as valid.

• Ubuntu 12.4.1 failing in vm both Vbox and Vmware on new HP Envy 4t-1000

  Brand new to Linux, getting frustrated trying to get an environment up with Ubuntu. My primary goal is to learn Linux and Apache/PHP development. I need to keep my Windows OS as main on my machine for work, so i'm trying to virtualize Ubuntu 12.4.1 without luck (many attempts). I have a new HP Envy 4t-1000 with 16gb ram, and 32 gb ssd caching with 500gb spindle hard drive. Graphics card is an Intel HD 3000 with AMD Radeon 7670M. With installing Ubuntu desktop in VBox, I'm getting this result: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51939 With VMware workstation 7 (patched), I complete the install of Ubuntu, it reboots, purple desktop briefly flashes then it drops to command line. I bought a beginning Ubuntu book, and it recommends trying to manually configure graphics if this happens. So I tried doing a safe boot holding shift - I get to the first screen (GRUB) loads fine, and I choose recovery mode. After choosing the recovery mode, I get the recovery mode options, and can arrow down to what the book suggests 'Run in fail safe graphic mode.' Once I select this option, I get a black screen with a large white dialogue box, at the top it says "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Then there is an ok button way down at the bottom. When I select 'ok' I get a menu for a few options, book recommended 'reconfigure graphics.' When I try this, I get a menu of two options: 1) "Use generic (default) configuration or 2) use backup. I've tried both options several times, hitting ok just refreshes screen and nothing more. Rebooting at this point just goes back to command line as before. I don't know what to do at this point, I've spent too many hours this weekend trying in both VBox and VMware to get Ubuntu going. Isn't there like a very basic graphic display or something I can use to at least get into the desktop? I explored the GRUB some more, and tried to look at the startup and xserver logs - both are blank. No help there I guess? When I try to choose 'Edit the configuration file, then 'ok' screen just refreshes on same menu options, nothing happens. thx for any advice. I really need to focus on learning Linux, Apache and PHP, so perhaps Ubuntu just won't work on my hardware? Any other suggestions? I will need to virtualize - THANKS for any help/advice.

• I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • F# Application Entry Point

  Up to now I have been looking at F# for modular solutions, but have never considered writing an end to end application. Today I was wondering how one would even start to write an end to end application and realized that I didn’t even know where the entry point is for an F# application. After browsing MSDN a bit I got a basic example of a F# application with an entry point [<EntryPoint>] let main args = printfn "Arguments passed to function : %A" args // Return 0. This indicates success. 0 Pretty simple stuff… but what happens when you have a few modules in a program – so I created a F# project with two modules and a main module as illustrated in the image below… When I try to compile my program I get a build error… A function labeled with the 'EntryPointAttribute' attribute must be the last declaration in the last file in the compilation sequence, and can only be used when compiling to a .exe… What does this mean? After some more reading I discovered that the Program.fs needs to be the last file in the F# application – the order of the files in a F# solution are important. How do I move a source file up or down? I tried dragging the Program.fs file below ModuleB.fs but it wouldn’t allow me to. Then I thought to right click on a source file and got the following menu.   Wala… to move the source file to the bottom of the solution you can select the “Move Up” or “Move Down” option. Now that I got this right I decided to put some code in ModuleA & ModuleB and I have the start of a basic application structure. • I have a wireless Canon P560 and my computer can't find it

  The printer is wireless and I haven't connected it via USB. I set the configurations for the Wi-Fi access point in the printer and it connected to my Wi-Fi. I have AT&T as the service provider and the 2Wire router. When I access the router in the browser I see that the printer is connected but when I run the software to detect the printer the computer can't find it. I have a Mac with Snow Leopard. I tried to detect the printer with another device and it can't find it. Is there a port that needs to be open for wireless printers? Because I tried putting the routers firewall settings for the device to its lowest and the computer still can't find it. Let me know. Thnx.

• How do I improve terrain rendering batch counts using DirectX?

  We have determined that our terrain rendering system needs some work to minimize the number of batches being transferred to the GPU in order to improve performance. I'm looking for suggestions on how best to improve what we're trying to accomplish. We logically split our terrain mesh into smaller grid cells which are 32x32 world units. Each cell has meta data that dictates the four 256x256 textures that are used for spatting along with the alpha blend data, shadow, and light mappings. Each cell contains 81 vertices in a 9x9 grid. Presently, we examine each cell and determine the four textures that are being used to spat the cell. We combine that geometry with any other cell that perhaps uses the same four textures regardless of spat order. If the spat order for a cell differs, the blend map is adjusted so that the spat order is maintained the same as other like cells and blending happens in the right order too. But even with this batching approach, it isn't uncommon when looking out across an area of open terrain to have between 1200-1700 batch count depending upon how frequently textures differ or have different texture blends are between cells. We are only doing frustum culling presently. So using texture spatting, are there other alternatives that can reduce the batch count and allow rendering to be extremely performance-friendly even under DirectX9c? We considered using texture atlases since we're targeting DirectX 9c & older OpenGL platforms but trying to repeat textures using atlases and shaders result in seam artifacts which we haven't been able to eliminate with the exception of disabling mipmapping. Disabling mipmapping results in poor quality textures from a distance. How have others batched together terrain geometry such that one could spat terrain using various textures, minimizing batch count and texture state switches so that rendering performance isn't negatively impacted?

What would be your recommendations? First I tried to restore using gnome-panel --replace but did not succeeded then I re-install gnome-panel after a clean uninstall but results are same. He is using Ubuntu 13.04 (Gnome Classic fallback (No effects)). I saw few old solutions for similar problems, mostly for 10.04, but those stuffs are of no help. I want to get back the whole panel as it was with all icons and indicators.

  I'm developing a 2D sprite-based game, and I'm finding that I'm having trouble with making the sprites rotate correctly. In a nutshell, I've got spritesheets for each of 5 directions (the other 3 come from just flipping the sprite horizontally), and I need to clamp the velocity/rotation of the sprite to one of those directions.   I recently bought a VAIO E Series laptop with an ATI Radeon 7670M and Intel HD Switchable Graphics. Around about one month ago, my computer started shutting down with atikmpag.sys blue screen error and the frequency of the errors kept on increasing with time. I am really worried about my VGA Adapter and whether or not it's gone bad. It's a 3 month old laptop! I searched on Google about atikmpag.sys BSOD and most of them suggested that my driver probably needs to be updated. I searched the Sony website and also the ATI website, I did have the latest drivers installed. Yet, I uninstalled the driver and installed it back again. But blue screens just keep coming back again and again. It generally happens more frequently when I have a video running and have paused it to do something else. I hope it's a driver issue!
