• VPN on OSX disconnects after precisely 2 minutes and 30 seconds on specific network

  When connecting to my own VPN server on a specific network, called public-network, my Mac disconnects the VPN connection after 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I have performed several tests and this is the result: It works fine until the 2:30 mark It doesn't matter which Mac I use, it still disconnects It doesn't matter which client I use, all of the following does the same: OSX system client, HMA! Pro VPN and Shimo It doesn't matter which protocol I use, at least all of these protocols does the same: PPTP, OpenVPN and L2TP over IPSec The same thing happens using my own VPN server and HMA!'s VPN server. All other clients (Windows/iPhone) can use any of these VPN servers and protocols without problem on public-network On OSX, all the protocols, clients and servers works fine on any other network So it seems that it is the combination of OSX, VPN & public-network that causes this. • Is it possible to detect nearby Wi-Fi enabled devices, not necessarily on the same network? [closed]

  first question on StackExchange ever. I hope I got the right board. I'm trying to create a device (either from a standard AP or some other unconventional means) that will be able to detect nearby Wi-Fi enabled devices. For example, if a cellular phone (iPhone for instance) would be carried into the secured area, its MAC address will be logged. A cellular phone is a good example because it's the most common threat that should be detected. Some important points: The detection can be either active or passive, doesn't matter. The detected device might be connected to a different network, or might not be connected to anything at all. I assume most cellular phones are actively probing when not connected, but I'm not sure. It is important to not only identify the breach, but also to identify the device (MAC address). Conventional hardware is only optional. Distance of detection is at least 6 meters (20 feet). Handling one device at a time is good. Speed of detection is important, under 5 seconds is ideal. So my question is, is this even possible? If so, what can I use in order to make this a reality?   Hi, I need to copy my numbers from my private Nokia to my office BB. I have not found a way to export my phone numbers from ovi or elsewhere. On Mac iSync stopped working with snow leopard and OVI on windows does not export. I do not mind using a windows suggestion. I lost a description on how to use the ovi backup files in another program. What I have done so far terminal: sudo open -a iSync.app - it launched but iSync said "this device is not supported by iSync" went here http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/isync/compatibility-and-download found a plugin (I am sure that was not there a while ago :| ) Checked software version 22.0.110 installed plugin Ran iSync which found and installed my N97 device successfully. synced. I would not have considered switching from Nokia if Mac had been better supported. It is so frustrating that they just seem not to care losing Nokia fanbois like me - especially since I am this outspoken on the net and what i say on popular forums gets indexed by google fast. I am very close to just go iPhone here. Hope someone has Nokia's ears UPDATE: I Downloaded NbuExplorer from sourceforge. It will extract everything from an OVI backup into VCF, VCS and VMG files. Very useful software and free.

• What is the collaborative screen shot/diagramming application recently featured on Hacker News and p

  A few days ago, I saw this video for a screen capture application. I'm pretty sure I followed a link from Hacker News, possibly to a Life Hacker article. The video was very short, but demonstrated how the application could be used: The application was basically a movable/resize-able view port with a button. When the button is pressed, the contents of the view port are saved to an image (basically a screen capture.) The interesting thing is what you could do after that point. One of the specific examples from the video browsed to Google maps street view, grabbed a photo of an intersection, then scribbled notes about where to meet and where the restaurant was in colored "marker." Another example shown was grabbing a house layout from from CAD tool, then scribbling notes on it. The last part of the video showed several possible uses being scrolled through the application's view port. Now, it seemed it was very easy to share these images with other people because there was some type of integration, either with their own site and/or common social websites/chat services. The application was shown running on both Windows and Mac. edit: I think there was an iPhone app, as well. Anyone know what this application is? I tried searching Google, Hacker News, and Life Hacker already. It is not Jing.

  Hi, I have a Telewell TW-EA510v4 ADSL modem+WLAN router configured as follows: Mode: 802.11b+g Security Mode: WPA1 Pre-shared Key WPA Algorithms: TKIP Connections from only certain MAC addresses have been allowed and the MAC address of my Mac is in that list. The WLAN works just fine with iPhone and an old Acer laptop. It has worked for about two months or so with my MacBook Pro (year and a half or so old model). Ocassionally i've had minor problems with it, which have required either reboot of ADSL modem or reboot of my Mac. However now, for the last week or so I haven't been able to connect to it at all. This is what is what i get in the console when i try to connect: 5.5.2010 20.54.53 airportd[73731] Apple80211Associate() failed -3924 (Invalid PMK) 5.5.2010 20.54.53 Apple80211 framework[584] airportd MIG failed (Associate Event) = -3924 (Invalid PMK) (port = 104599) 5.5.2010 20.54.53 SystemUIServer[584] Error joining WLAN-M: Invalid password (-3924 Invalid master key) The pre-shared key I use is not incorrect. I'm 100% sure of that. • Outlook 2007 will not send/receive using RPC over HTTP to an exchange server.. works for other users

  I have an incredibly frustrating user issue that I have been unable to resolve for over a week, any ideas for this would be greatly appreciated. The user is having troubles using Outlook 2007 to send or receive emails over using RPC over HTTP (Outlook Anywhere) to an exchange server. Basically what happens, the connection will be establised and the user will be prompted for the username and password, those are submitted and then outlook tries to download emails which fails and the connection to the exchange server will remain unavailable. The machine can ping and everything to the exchange server there is no connection issue there. The setup worked fine for him up untill now and also works for possibly hundreds of other users using the exact same settings, also the same settings will work from the users iphone on the same internet connection, and from my own system using outlook. The exchange server has the webmail https feature and that can be logged into and send and receive emails fine. Steps taken so far: removing the .ost file for the account and allowing office to rebuild it (fixes the issue for a short period of time, then the same symptons occur) deleted exchange profile and recreated (no change in issue) uninstalled all antivirus and firewalls (no change in issue) removed all cached passwords (keymgr.dll) (no change in issue) removed all entries from the hosts file (no change in issue) uninstalled and reinstalled office 2007 (Temporary fix of issue) Installing Symantec Endpoint Client caused a lot of email scan popups to be displayed, after a reboot this stopped and a scan it picked a few trojans that it removed. This fixed the issue temporarily as well, the issue is back again now. I am completely out of ideas now, there seems to be nothing that can be done to fix this issue outside of rebuilding the PC which is a massive pandoras box I don't want to enter with this user. --- Update ---- Malware scans from multiple products have been run on the machine and all updates were installed. The real problem with this user is his distance from us, there is no way to supply a spare laptop or rebuild the machine currently.

• Problems with word completion on Windows Mobile

  For "some reason" the word completion function on my windows mobile phone (HTC Diamond, rebadged as a T-Mobile MDA Compact IV (UK) running WM6.1 with HTC Touch Flo 3D) hasn't worked since one of my firends was taking a look at the phone (I remember him bitching about it being too obtrusive for him, as an iPhone fanboy). I've checked all the obvious settings ( Start Input Word Completion ) and everything looks set there; I tried a hard reset, to no avail and even tried upgrading the ROM t the latest from my network provider. I even tried walking into the store where I bought the phone, and the staff couldn't fix the issue. I still have my old handset, which also runs WM6.1 (a T-Mobile MDA Compact III (UK), albeit without Touch Flo 3D), and the word completion works on there, so I'm a little confused as to why I can't get it to work again on my new handset. Can anybody identify why this might not be working, or help me fix it? Edit: Even "Touch Input Settings" has both "Word Completion in T9 mode" and "Word Completion in ABC mode" checked. The full qwerty keyboard option is in T9 mode, and word completion works for this input method; It still does not work for my preferred, "Letter Recogniser" method.

• Mac OS Leopard: SyncServer process constantly using 100% CPU

  I am running Leopard that I upgraded from Tiger. I've been noticing that every once in a while the SyncServer process starts up and eats up all the CPU. The fans will start going at full blast and the laptop will slow down to a crawl. I need to force quit the process from Activity Monitor to get it under control. It disappears for a while, but eventually gets started again. I do have an iphone as well that I sync so I'm wondering if syncServer might be an apple process checking for my phone plugged in. • Linksys wireless router will not hardware reset.

  Hello, all. I'm unable to make my router perform a hardware reset, and I cannot understand why. All was working well, except that my iPhone could not connect to the wireless. I found that the router was only allowing AES encryption on WPA2 Personal mode, so I upgraded the firmware. I updated the firmware to Ver.1.06.1, and everything went screwy. The router is no longer showing up in the WiFi list (as Linksys, or its previous network name). Wiring into the router gives me an IP address from my ISP (24.121.121.XXX). Attempting to do a hardware reset, but the power light never starts flashing and the router does not seem to reboot. My machine wired in is still online with no interruption in WoW. Pulling the power cord to force a reset returns it to the same state. I even went so far as to pull up my previous IP address (from DynDNS) and try to connect to that, but it wont even ping. What I'm trying to find out is: Did the new firmware fry the thing, or is there some way to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

• Mac Backup Plan

  I'm reviewing my backup plan and would appreciate any thoughts about what more I should do (if anything) to make sure I'm properly covered in case of all hell breaking loose. :-) I have one machine. 1) I run a nightly clone with SuperDuper. I alternate the clone drive weekly so I have two clones, one never more than a week old. 2) I use BackBlaze as a sort of Time Machine in the cloud. It runs all the time and keeps everything on my machine backed up online. 3) I sync all my 1Password logins, etc. to my iPhone once a week. ...And that's it. I feel pretty covered. But I'm always reading stuff like this: http://www.43folders.com/2010/03/15/yes-another-backup-lecture And that doesn't even mention online backup, and seems like a huge pain in the behind. But maybe I'm being naive? Should I have more backups? Thanks for any feedback. I really appreciate it.

  I've done a fair amount of reading before posting this but there are a few things still unclear. I just bought a Netgear WNDR3700 N600. I understand that 5GHz offers more channels, less interference because of more available channels, wont interfere with a microwave and so on, and also has a shorter range. Currently, my router is broadcasting both signals (for my iPhone on 2.4, and my computer on 5) But my question is What is the max speed of 5GHz in mbps? In the router settings, it allows me to set '300mbps', but I keep reading online that the max is 54. Is this true? I noticed when I set up the router the default for 2.4 was set to 300 and the default for 5 was set to 54, so I changed both to 300. Is this fine as well? I don't see why it wouldn't be maxed out for both by default. On the box it says max rate of 300+300 so I assume this is correct, but it's throttled down so the router isn't stressing in case you have something streaming media 24/7 and slowing the internet down too. What is the max range of 5GHz? my apt is 780 square feet, and the router is in the main living room.

• Windows 7 x64 RTM USB Port Has Power But Won't Recognize Mouse/Keyboard/Anything

  I have an odd error that doesn't seem to fit in with any of the other odd Windows 7 x64 USB errors that have been kicked up on Google. Here we go: Uninstalled Tortoise SVN and clicked restart computer. My machine had been up for around 28 days On reboot my mouse and keyboard failed to work anymore, couldn't log in. Tried every USB port I have on my Dell 390 and the ports on my Dell 19's, nothing worked. They had power but Windows would not respond when I manipulated the keyboard/mouse. Rebooted my computer and pressed F2 to get into bios, my keyboard is working fine in bios. Keyboard and mouse work fine on other computers when using USB. Found adapters for keyboard and mouse to convert from USB to PS/2 ports, works fine. I'm actually typing this question on the same keyboard, same computer, just using PS/2 ports for my mouse and keyboard. It appears to be a Windows 7 x64 issue. Other things I have tried: Multiple other mice and keyboards, iphone, all with no luck. Each one gets power, but Windows never tries to install drivers or sees that they are connected. Uninstall and reinstall all USB drivers. Drives uninstall and reinstall fine and report no errors in Control Panel. In Power Management I disallow Windows from turning off USB ports to save power Installed the latest nVidia drivers for my graphics card, no change. Anyplace else I can look/try? Thanks!

• certificate working on IP but not on URL

  I asked this question on stackoverflow, and I've been suggested to repost it here. I have a problem accessing my site (on https) with IEMobile 9 (WP 7.5). It says it's got problem with the certificate, as if it wasn't valid. Everything works on any other browser or platform I tested (android (several phones and a galaxy tab with stock browser, firefox, opera, dolphin), iOS (iphone and ipad with safari and chrome), an old nokia with symbian, windows 7, linux and mac). To try to solve this I saved the certificate (.cer) on the server and accessed it from the phone browser. It always complained except when I accessed it through the server IP (192.168.xx.xx). At that point it (said it) installed correctly the certificate. If then I try to access the index.html still using the IP all works fine and it doesn't complain about the certificate. If, though, I try to access the index using the actual URL (blah.myblah.com), it complains again about the certificate, as if it wasn't installed! It isn't a problem of DNS, cause that's up and serving the right ip, and the phone is correctly setup to use it. The certificate is signed by geotrust/rapidssl for *.myblah.com.

• App for family tech support tracking?

  I do tech support for several groups within my family. They usually have a document or notebook of questions for me. They often record my advice, but then ask me again later. Some communications are by email (nice record for me, although they never think to search). Some sessions are in person, usually with a followup email from me for the record. Which they forget about. I'm not trying to force them to be more 'professional', but I would like to streamline my support a bit, and give them a place to look for past answers. Some of them would like a standard place like that, rather than reasking me the same questions. The solution has to be free. And web-based, although email-in for questions would be great. I'll be doing most (all?) updating of the system. Mobile/iPhone access would be nice, but not required. Ideally, a system with topics and responses would be good, but I'd need a way to promote one response as 'the answer'.

  What I have: I have an iPhone app that sends HTTP POST requests (XML format) to a web service written in PHP. This is on a hosted virtual private server so I can edit httpd.conf and other files on the server, and restart Apache. The problem: The web service works perfectly as long as the request is not too large, but around 1MB is the limit. After that, the server responds with: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> <html><head> <title>413 Request Entity Too Large</title> </head><body> <h1>Request Entity Too Large</h1> The requested resource<br />/<br /> does not allow request data with POST requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit. </body></html> The web service writes its own log file, and I can see that small messages are processed fine. Larger messages are not logged at all so I guess that something in Apache rejects them before they even reach the web service? Things I've tried without success: (I've restarted Apache after every change. These steps are incremental.) hosting provider's web-based configuration panel: disable mod_security httpd.conf: LimitXMLRequestBody 0 and LimitRequestBody 0 httpd.conf: LimitXMLRequestBody 100000000 and LimitRequestBody 100000000 httpd.conf: SecRequestBodyLimit 100000000 At this stage, Apache's error.log contains a message: ModSecurity: Request body no files data length is larger than the configured limit (1048576) It looks like my step #4 didn't really take, which is consistent with step #1 but does not explain why mod_security appears to be active after all. What more can I try, to get the web service to receive large messages?

• What is a good WordPress theme for long Objective-C code samples [closed]

  As some of you iPhone developers know, Objective-C can be a verbose language. Long, descriptive variable and method names are the norm. I'm not complaining, it makes code easier to read and code completion makes it easy to type. But damn! Check out this method name for getting a cell in a table view: -(UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath; I have a WordPress blog where I publish my code samples as I'm learning the language. One thing I hate on other blogs is how the code won't fit in a column without that scroll bar or without wrapping around. It really made it hard for me to read and comprehend method names back when I was a super-noob (six months ago). Right now I use the clean-looking Fazyvo 1.0 theme by noonnoo. I love the look of it but the columns are just too narrow and it doesn't have support for wider ones. I could hand-modify it but then I'd have to maintain/redo those changes every time I updated it. Instead, I'm looking for a nice theme that has width control built-in and looks good at larger font sizes. Can anyone help? Note: I use WP-CodeBox for code syntax highlighting.

• Android webbrowser returns code 500 for webpage on Nginx webserver

  Hey! I've come to a very weird behavior of a web browser on android mobile phone (I've tried HTC Wildfire and HTC Desire phones). I have a web server with Nginx v0.8.54. When i try to open a web page on the phone it shows me error: The requested item could not be loaded! (Status code: 500) BUT it only happens when I am requesting page through Mobile network. On Wifi it works just fine .... but there is more .... if I stop Nginx and start Apache web server it works just fine on both Mobile network and wifi. I've also tried other mobile network and it is the same behavior. Some server stats: Firewall is OFF Selinux is OFF the web page (using Nginx web server) opens normally on any other browser (IE, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari) on the laptop or PC Nothing in nginx error.log This is the only entry in access.log when the page is requested: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - - [17/Mar/2011:11:19:49 -0500] 200 "GET / HTTP/1.1" 27405 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-gb; Desire_A8181 Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1" "-" index.html has only "Hello World" string in it. There is no fishy javascript or anything else. .... but there is even more.... if i open the same page on another server, with the same Nginx build, with the same server and web server configuration.... it opens just fine. if anyone has any idea on what may be going on, i would really appreciate it if you let me know. • Streaming music throughout the house on a budget?

  I was wondering whether anyone knew of a way to stream music throughout a house on a budget? I want to avoid spending any money on this (eg. I don't want to buy a d-link style device). It would be ideal if I could use my existing hardware and some open source software. I have three old(ish) PCs knocking around. I'm happy to stick either Windows or Linux on them. They can all be hooked up to speakers. The ideal solution would result in: the same audio being heard from every device (eg. when you hear a beat on one device, you'd hear it at the exact same time on another (so you don't get any echo)) I'd be able to control the source application (eg. the songs lined up) with my iPhone. I realise I'm being cheeky with those two wishes - but you never know your luck. Am I asking for too much, or is there a piece of software/protocol out there with this purpose in mind? I've been searching for sometime now, but haven't had any joy. Thanks in advance.

• Connection to Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, etc. compromised via all devices on my home network - How?

  I'm a very computer savvy guy (although not very networking savvy), and I may still be wrong about this, but I think my home network may be compromised somehow. I'd like to know if it's possible for someone to have hijacked my network's connection to Google.com and other popular websites. Update: The issue seems to take effect with all popular websites. I can connect to small (non-popular) websites without issue, but Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and Bing cannot be accessed by any device on my home network. On all devices using my home network, I'm being shown http://www.google.com WARNING! Internet Explorer is currently out of date. Please update to continue. when I attempt to connect to google.com. I wouldn't be surprised by this at all if it were just the laptop. It's the fact that this is happening on all devices on my network that confuses me. Here's the screenshot from my iPhone, for reference. Can my home network be compromised? Is that even possible? How can something like this happen across all platforms on all devices in the same way? I wouldn't imagine every device / platform on the network would get the same virus. Should I assume that my network's security is totally compromised? Update: All mobile devices and laptops on my home network are experiencing the same alert when attempting to connect to google.com.

I currently have Google Apps hosting personal email, calendars, contacts, etc. I do like the other google services, but they're outside of Apps. One of the little google irritations that I have to maintain a separate account for Picassa, etc. So, I'm thinking about moving myself away from Google, but purely for personal, privacy type issues. Do I really like the ads, the email snooping, etc? I've had, and liked MobileMe, back when it was iTools, and then .Mac, but it doesn't offer that much really. How easily can I replicate it all on a VPS? I don't want to host it myself at home, I'd lose all the wonderful datacenter goodness. THis isn't about personal geekery in my own basement, just about taking a little control back from Google. So, email is fine running an IMAP server, a nice front-end, etc. What about Calendars and Contacts? And, how easily can it be setup to sync to the desktop and iPhone? Thanks.

• Unable to connect to Windows VPN from iPad

  I have a 16 GB iPad wifi I can't get to connect to VPN. The error I get is: "A connection could not be established to the PP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator." I have tried a variety of tasks to troubleshoot the issue: I have verified that another iPad on another network can connect to the VPN I am trying to connect to I can connect to this VPN from the same network the iPad uses on a Windows machine I have verified an iPhone user can connect to this VPN from a different network I have reset the iPad's network settings I have reset the entire iPad and restored settings I have compared my settings w/ a screenshot from the iPad that works and confirmed everything is correct I have used the IP address and domain name of our VPN server in the settings I have tried deleting the VPN settings in the iPad and recreating them I have verified in the logs of VPN server that I'm not even getting to the VPN server (no log entry) I have verified that I cannot VPN from the iPad on separate network (different ISP and router) Are there any other ways to troubleshoot VPN on an iPad?

• organizing my music and my itunes

  What can we do to organize our music? I've got over 20k items on my iTunes Library, at least 5k with ratings and play counts, apparently just 12k music files and I can't understand how this question have not been properly answered yet. Maybe there is no answer. I have too many duplicates, broken links, bad music, corrupted files... Well, a big mess with no tags! Probably there's no single software capable of just organizing everything, though I'd love one. Hopefully some time in the near future we all will be able to just sync the cloud of our automagically selected music to the newly created offline copy. But meanwhile... Please, do consider I've at least gave a shot (even while not a full test drive) to every single answer linked here already, plus a few more. I'm fine with using other software (mac too, please) to organize, but I'd need it to sync (retrieve and put back) at least iTunes ratings, because of iPhone and smart playlists. Not looking for iTunes replacement. I'm hoping to hear what you hardcore music organizers out there are using as your own solutions! :) I myself am using way too many tools, getting way too little done and end up going song by song.

• Can Spotlight or Media Browser index metadata contained in iPhoto or Aperture in Mac OS X?

  It seems silly to go to all the trouble to assign "Face" data to thousands of photos, but not make it possible to use that data to locate them outside of that application. Is there any way to get Spotlight or Media Browser in OSX (Snow Leopard) to index and recognize metadata (Faces, Places, etc.) contained in iPhoto or Aperture? I know that that metadata is stored in the "library" database for Aperture/iphoto, rather than on the actual files (which is too bad). And I can even potentially see why it might create challenges for spotlight to use it, since spotlight is presumably a file index system, not a media organizer, but surely the media browser used across the other OSX apps is intended to use it? The media browser's whole purpose seems to be to let you easily locate and reference the items you organize in one of the ilife apps (iphoto or Aperture, in this case) from the others (say, imovie, or Mail). It's particularly vexing since the photo app on the iphone sorts by faces by default. Additionally, the mac-based media browser does access smart albums and folders, so you could establish a workaround by creating a smart album for each "face" or place, or tag, and access them that way, but it seems like there must be an easier way. Am I missing something?

• Using Different Networks with Different Proxy Servers on Windows 7

  Hi, I have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. There are two wireless networks I connect to every day: Home: no proxy server Work: proxy server with authentication On my iPad and iPhone, I've got two WiFi network profiles (one for home, one for work). The work one has the proxy server settings specified. The home one has no proxy specified. It all works great and I don't need to go changing settings around whenever I move from home to work or vice versa. On my laptop, however, I can't seem to get this going. I can certainly connect to both networks, but when I'm at work I have to go and change the proxy settings (in Internet Options) to be able to use the network. When I'm at home, I have to then go and turn them off. It's a small thing, but considering this is something I have to do every day, it's a bit annoying. Is there any way I can make Windows automatically switch proxy settings on or off based on the network I'm connected to? Thanks, John
