• Are you reporting Visual Studio 2012 issues to Microsoft correctly?

  Issues you may run into while using Visual Studio need to be reported to the Microsoft Product Team via the Microsoft connect site. The Microsoft team then tries to reproduce the issue using the details provided by you. If the information you provide isn’t sufficient to reproduce the issue the team tries to contact you for specifics, this not only increases the cycle time to resolution but the lack of communication also results in issues not being resolved. So, when I report an issue one part of me tells me to include as much detail about the issue as I can clubbing screen shots, repo steps, system information, visual studio version information,… the other half tells me this is so time consuming, leave it for now and come back to fill all these details later. Reporting a bug but not including the supporting information is an invitation to excuses like …     Microsoft has absolutely changed this experience for VS 2012. The Microsoft Visual Studio Feedback tool is designed to simplify the process of providing feedback and reporting issues to Microsoft that you may encounter while using Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. Note – The Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback client currently only works for VS 2012 and not any other versions of Visual Studio. Setting up the Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback client Open Visual Studio, from the Tools menu select Extension and Updates. In the Extension and Updates window, click Online from the left pane and search using the text ‘feedback’, download and Install Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback Tool by following the instructions from the wizard. Note - Restarting Visual Studio after the install is a must! How to report a bug for Visual Studio 2012? Click on the Help menu and choose Report a Bug You should see an icon Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback Tool come up in the system tray icon area You’ll need to accept the Privacy statement. You have the option of reporting the feedback as private or public. Microsoft works with several Partners, MVP’s and Vendors who get access to early bits of Microsoft products for valuation. This is where it becomes essential to report the feedback privately. I would choose the Public option otherwise. After all if it’s out there in the public, others can discover and add to it easily. You now have the option to report a new issue or add to an existing issue. Should you choose to add to an existing issue you should have the feedback ID of the issue available. This can be obtained from the Microsoft Connect site. For now I am going to focus on reporting a new feedback privately. Filling out the feedback details You will notice that VsInfo.xml and DxDiagOutput.txt are automatically attached as you enter this screen (more on that later).  Feedback Type Choose the feedback type from (Performance, Hang, Crash, Other) Note – The record button will only be enabled once you have enabled once you have chosen the feedback type, Bug-repro recording is not available for Windows Server 2008.     Effective Title and Description Enter a title that helps us differentiate the bug when it appears in a list, so that we can group it with any related bugs, assign it to a developer more effectively, and resolve it more quickly. Example: Imagine that you are submitting a bug because you tried to install Service Pack 1 and got a message that Visual Studio is not installed even though it is. Helpful:  Installed Visual Studio version not detected during Service Pack 1 setup. Not helpful:  Service Pack 1 problem. Tip: Write the problem description first, and then distil it to create a title. Example Description: Helpful: When I run Service Pack 1 Setup, I get the message "No Visual Studio version is detected" even though I have Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and Visual C++ 2010 Express installed on my machine. Even though I uninstalled both editions, and then first reinstalled Ultimate and then Express, I still get the message. Record: Becoming a first class citizen Often a repro report is invaluable to describe and decipher the issue. Please use this feature to send actionable feedback. The record repro feature works differently depending on the feedback type you selected. Please find below details for each recording option. You can start recording simply by selecting a feedback type, and clicking on the “Record” button. When "Performance" is the bug type: When the Microsoft Visual Studio trace recorder starts, perform the actions that show the performance problem you want to report and then click on the "Stop Recording" button as soon as you experience the performance problem. Because the tool optimizes trace collection, you can run it for as long as it takes to show the problem, up to two hours. Note that, you need to stop recording as soon as the performance issue occurs, because the tool captures only the last couple minutes of your actions to optimize the trace collection. After you stop the recording, the tool takes up to two minutes to assemble the data and attach an ETLTrace.zip file to your bug report. The data includes information about Windows events and the Visual Studio code path. Note that, running the Microsoft Visual Studio trace recorder requires elevated user privilege. When "Crash" is the bug type: When the dialog box appears, select the running Visual Studio instance for which you want to show the steps that cause a crash. When the crash occurs, click on the "Stop Record" button. After you do this, two files are attached to your bug report - an AutomaticCrashDump.zip file that contains information about the crash and a ReproSteps.zip file that shows the repro steps. Repro steps are captured by Windows Problem Steps Recorder. Note that, you can pause the recording, and resume later, or for a specific step, you can add additional comments. When "Hang" is the bug type: The process for recording the steps that cause a hang resembles the one for crashes. The difference is, you can even collect a dump file after the VS hangs; start the VSFT either from the system tray or by starting a new instance of VS, select "Hang" as feedback type and click on the "Record" button. You will be prompted which VS to collect dump about, select the VS instance that hanged. VSFT collects a dump file regarding the hang, called MiniDump.zip, and attaches to your bug report. When "Other" is the bug type: When the problem step recorder starts, perform the actions that show the issue you want to report and then choose the "Stop” button. You can pause the recording, and resume later, or for a specific step, you can add additional comments. Once you’re done, ReproSteps.zip is added to your bug report. Pre-attached files It is essential for Microsoft to know what version of the the product are you currently using and what is the current configuration of your system. Note – The total size of all attachments in a bug report cannot exceed 2 GB, and every uncompressed attachment must be smaller than 512 MB. We recommend that you assemble all of your attachments, compress them together into a .zip file, and then attach the .zip file. Taking a screenshot Associate a screen shot by clicking the Take screenshot button, choose either the entire desktop, the specific monitor (useful if you are working in a multi monitor configuration) or the specific window in question. • LXC Container Networking

  I just started to experiment with LXC containers. I was able to create a container and start it up but I cannot get dhcp to assign the container an IP address. If I assign a static address the container can ping the host IP but not outside the host IP. The host is CentOS 6.5 and the guest is Ubuntu 14.04LTS. I used the template downloaded by lxc-create -t download -n cn-01 command. If I am trying to get an IP address on the same subnet as the host I don't believe I should need the IP tables rule for masquerading but I added it anyways. Same with IP forwarding. • Showing an Action on a TopComponent Node

  Let's say you want to extend the tools in NetBeans IDE, specifically for TopComponents. When the user right-clicks in the Projects window (or Files window or Favorites window) on a Java class that extends TopComponent, a menu item should be available for branding the TopComponent. What "branding" entails is, at this stage, a secondary question. The primary question, from an implementation point of view, is "how do I create an action that is only shown when the user right-clicks on a TopComponent?"   there have been a few issues with the server i have been working on i check the event viewer and it is filled with the errors below i was not sure how to go about fixing this i looked in the path where the file is and it is there Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=ISPHOME,DC=NET. The file must be present at the location <\\isphome.net\\sysvol\ISPHOME.NET\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>. (The network location cannot be reached. • Add collection or array to wpf resource dictionary

  I've search high and low and can't find an answer to this. I have two questions How do you create an array or collection in XAML. I've got an array I want to stick in there and bind to a combo box. My first idea was to put an ItemsControl in a resource dictionary, but the ItemsSource of a combo box expects IEnumerable so that didn't work. Here's what I've tried in my resource dictionary and neither works <ItemsControl x:Key="stateList"> <sys:String>AL</sys:String> <sys:String>CA</sys:String> <sys:String>CN</sys:String> </ItemsControl> <ItemsControl x:Key="stateList2"> <ComboBoxItem>AL</ComboBoxItem> <ComboBoxItem>CA</ComboBoxItem> <ComboBoxItem>CN</ComboBoxItem> </ItemsControl> and here's how I bind to it <ComboBox SelectedValue="{Binding Path=State}" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource stateList2}}" > </ComboBox> EDIT: UPDATED I got this first part to work this way <col:ArrayList x:Key="stateList3"> <sys:String>AL</sys:String> <sys:String>CA</sys:String> <sys:String>CN</sys:String> </col:ArrayList> However, I'd rather not use an array list, I'd like to use a generic list so if anyone knows how please let me know. EDIT UPDATE: I guess XAML has very limited support for generics so maybe an array list is the best I can do for now, but I would still like help on the second question if anyone has an anser 2nd. I've tried referencing a merged resource dictionary in my XAML and had problems because under Window.resources I had more than just the dictionary so it required me to add x:Key. Once I add the key, the system can no longer find the items in my resource dictionary. I had to move the merged dictionary to Grid.Resources instead. Ideally I'd like to reference the merged dictionary in the app.xaml but I have the same problem Here's some sample code.   I have a Tiff using JPEG format the WPF / C# can not handle via TiffBitmapDecoder. Our clients use the file format and our current C++ and Java code handles it. I need to convert this to a format I can display using TiffBitmapDecoder or standard BitmapImage. It looks like the C# version of LibTiff is the way to go but I am not having any luck converting in code. • WPF DataContext does not refresh the DataGrid using MVVM model

  Project Overview I have a view which binds to a viewmodel containing 2 ObserverableCollection. The viewmodel constructor populates the first ObserverableCollection and the view datacontext is collected to bind to it through a public property called Sites. Later the 2ed ObserverableCollection is populated in the LoadOrders method and the public property LoadFraudResults is updated for binding it with datacontext. I am using WCF to pull the data from the database and its getting pulled very nicely. But, when I call BindItemsSource again to repopulate the obseravablecollection based on changed selected combo value via cmbWebsite_SelectionChanged, the observalblecollection gets populated with new value and LoadFraudResults property in viewmodule is populated with new values; but when i call the datacontext to rebind the datagrid,the datagrid does not reflect the changed values. In other words the datagrid doesnot get changed when the datacontext is called the 2ed time in BindItemsSource method of the view. manageFraudOrderViewModel.LoadOrders(website); this.DataContext = manageFraudOrderViewModel; manageFraudOrderViewModel values are correct but the datagrid is not relected with changed values. • WPF ContextMenu with bound items: Items.Count == 0 in ContextMenuOpening event

  I have a ContextMenu with the ItemsSource bound to the selected item of a list view, like this: <ContextMenu ItemsSource="{Binding Path=PlacementTarget.SelectedItem, RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}, Converter={StaticResource possibleConverter}}"/> The possibleConverter enumerates all possible values for a property of the the selected item, which are shown in the context menu. In the Opened event of the context menu, I select the current value like this: var cm = e.OriginalSource as ContextMenu; if (cm != null) { var lv = cm.PlacementTarget as ListView; var field = lv.SelectedItem as Field; var item = cm.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromItem(cm.Items.OfType<object>().Where(o => o.ToString().Equals(field.StringValue)).FirstOrDefault()) as MenuItem; if (item != null) { item.IsChecked = true; } } Not particularly elegant, but it works. With the debugger I verified that the ContextMenu.Items.Count property has a non-zero value when expected (i.e. cm.Items.Count is non-zero in the if). So far, so good. There are, however, items in the listview where the context menu will have no items. In this case, an empty menu is shown. I tried to suppress this in the ContextMenuOpening event in the list view, like this: var lv = sender as ListView; if (lv != null) { var cm = lv.ContextMenu; if ((cm != null) && (cm.Items.Count > 0)) { // Here we want to check the current item, which is currently done in the Opened event. } else { e.Handled = true; } } Seems like it should work. However, cm.Items.Count is always zero. This is true even if ListView.SelectedItem did not change: For an item with menu entries, the menu is shown correctly after the first click, so the data binding has already happend. It is shown correct the second time as well, but in any case, Items.Count is zero in the ContextMenuOpening event. What am I missing? How can I suppress empty context menus? Why is the count zero in the ContextMenuOpening handler, which is in Windows Forms (ContextMenuStrip.Opening) the canonical point where to do these things? EDIT: Upon further investigating, it turns out that in the ContextMenuOpening handler, any binding to the listview fails, which is why ItemsSource is null. I tried to bind via ElementName, via a FindAncestor relationship, all to no avail. The PlacementTarget is null during that event. An ugly hack worked though: In the ContextMenuOpening event, I assign the list view to the ContextMenu.Tag property, while the ItemsSource binding now binds to Tag.SelectedItem. This updates the binding, so Items.Count is what it should be. It's still strange. How can you do meaningful things in ContextMenuOpening other than replacing the menu or something, if the binding fails because somehow the context menu is out of context during the event? Was it only tested with static pre-defined menu items?

• Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

  Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller.   I upgraded my MVC Application using MSChart to MVC 2 and have ended up with broken image links for the charts. • MVC 2 with IIS 6 Problems

  Hey guys, I'm using IIS 6 on a Windows 2003 Server and I am trying to get an MVC2 project installed on that machine. I am having nightmare-ish problems doing so! I've looked up TONS of references on what to do, and not 1 single one works. (They work for MVC1 projects, as I have a few of those running already using said solutions). Does anyone have any tips/hints/ideas on what needs to be done for MVC2 projects with IIS 6? I am definitely pulling my hair out over this. I have tried it on 2 of my dev servers, and both get the same result. The closest I can get to a served page is an error page "Object reference not set to an instance of an object", however, the page has try/catch blocks that are being ignored, so I dont think its running the code on the controller, I think it's saying that the controller is the error. (For the reference, the error in question is directed at the HomeController.cs file).   I'm using Microsoft's DSOFramer control to allow me to embed an Excel file in my dialog so the user can choose his sheet, then select his range of cells; it's used with an import button on my dialog. The problem is that when I call the DSOFramer's OPEN function, if I have Excel open in another window, it closes the Excel document (but leaves Excel running). If the document it tries to close has unsaved data, I get a dialog boxclosing Excel doc in another window. If unsaved data in file, dsoframer fails to open with a messagebox: "Attempt to access invalid address". I built the source, and stepped through, and its making a call in its CDsoDocObject::CreateFromFile function, calling BindToObject on an object of class IMoniker. The HR is 0x8001010a "The message filter indicated that the application is busy". On that failure, it tries to InstantiateDocObjectServer by classid of CLSID Microsoft Excel Worksheet... this fails with an HRESULT of 0x80040154 "Class not registered". The InstantiateDocObjectServer just calls CoCreateInstance on the classid, first with CLSCTX_LOCAL_SERVER, then (if that fails) with CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER. I know DSOFramer is a popular sample project for embedding Office apps in various dialogs and forms. I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and might have some insight on how I can solve this. I really don't want it to close any other open Excel documents, and I really don't want it to error-out if it can't close the document due to unsaved data. Update 1: I've tried changing the classid that's passed in to "Excel.Application" (I know that class will resolve), but that didn't work. In CDsoDocObject, it tries to open key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\DocObject", but fails. I've visually confirmed that the key is not present in my registry; The key is present for the guid, but there's no DocObject subkey. It then produces an error message box: "The associated COM server does not support ActiveX document embedding". I get similar (different key, of course) results when I try to use the Excel.Workbook programid. Update 2: I tried starting a 2nd instance of Excel, hoping that my automation would bind to it (being the most recently invoked) instead of the problem Excel instance, but it didn't seem to do that. Results were the same. My problem seems to have boiled down to this: I'm calling the BindToObject on an object of class IMoniker, and receiving 0x8001010A (RPC_E_SERVERCALL_RETRYLATER) "The message filter indicated that the application is busy". I've tried playing with the flags passed to the BindToObject (via the SetBindOptions), but nothing seems to make any difference. Update 3: It first tries to bind using an IMoniker class. If that fails, it calls CoCreateInstance for the clsid as a "fallback" method. This may work for other MS Office objects, but when it's Excel, the class is for the Worksheet. I modified the sample to CoCreateInstance _Application, then got the workbooks, then called the Workbooks::Open for the target file, which returns a Worksheet object. I then returned that pointer and merged back with the original sample code path. All working now.

• Visual Studio 2010 and javascript debugging in external javascript files (embedded and minified).

  Hi, The asp.net web application I'm working on is written in asp.net 3.5, the web app solution is upgraded from VS 2008 (don't know if that matter). The solution had javascript in the aspx files before I moved the javascript to external files. Now what I have done is to set all the javascript files to be embedded resource (except the jquery.js file) and I want to minify them when building for release by using the MS Ajax Minifier. I want to use the minified javascript files when I'm in the RELEASE mode and when I'm in DEBUG mode I want to use the "normal" versions. My problem now is that I'm unable to debug the javascript code in debug mode. When I set a break point a javascript function, VS is not breaking at all when the function is executed. • COMException when trying to use a Library

  Hi Guys, I have an ASP.net WebService which uses a Library, this has a dependency on some third party .dlls. If I add a reference to the Library to my webservice, I get a COMException and I can't load the site. I thought it may be to do with aspnet user credentials, so I have tried impersonating and using processModel in machine.config but nothing seems to work. The .dlls are for communicating with hardware so I am not even using them on the server just other parts of the library, is there any way I can fix this? I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP3 with Visual 2008 SP1 and .net 3.5. I am thinking the only way of fixing it, is to split up the library into hardware and non-hardware based. • Ninject 3.0 MVC kernel.bind error Auto Registration

  Getting and error on kernel.Bind(scanner = ... "scanner" has the little error line under it in VS 2010. Cannot convert lambda expression to type 'System.Type[]' because it is not a delegate type Tyring to Auto Register like the old kernel.scan in 2.0. I can not figure out what i am doing wrong. • Best practices for using the Entity Framework with WPF DataBinding

  I'm in the process of building my first real WPF application (i.e., the first intended to be used by someone besides me), and I'm still wrapping my head around the best way to do things in WPF. It's a fairly simple data access application using the still-fairly-new Entity Framework, but I haven't been able to find a lot of guidance online for the best way to use these two technologies (WPF and EF) together. So I thought I'd toss out how I'm approaching it, and see if anyone has any better suggestions. I'm using the Entity Framework with SQL Server 2008. The EF strikes me as both much more complicated than it needs to be, and not yet mature, but Linq-to-SQL is apparently dead, so I might as well use the technology that MS seems to be focusing on. This is a simple application, so I haven't (yet) seen fit to build a separate data layer around it. When I want to get at data, I use fairly simple Linq-to-Entity queries, usually straight from my code-behind, e.g.: var families = from family in entities.Family.Include("Person") orderby family.PrimaryLastName, family.Tag select family; Linq-to-Entity queries return an IOrderedQueryable result, which doesn't automatically reflect changes in the underlying data, e.g., if I add a new record via code to the entity data model, the existence of this new record is not automatically reflected in the various controls referencing the Linq query. Consequently, I'm throwing the results of these queries into an ObservableCollection, to capture underlying data changes: familyOC = new ObservableCollection<Family>(families.ToList()); I then map the ObservableCollection to a CollectionViewSource, so that I can get filtering, sorting, etc., without having to return to the database. familyCVS.Source = familyOC; familyCVS.View.Filter = new Predicate<object>(ApplyFamilyFilter); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("PrimaryLastName", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("Tag", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); I then bind the various controls and what-not to that CollectionViewSource: <ListBox DockPanel.Dock="Bottom" Margin="5,5,5,5" Name="familyList" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource familyCVS}, Path=., Mode=TwoWay}" IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="True" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource familyTemplate}" SelectionChanged="familyList_SelectionChanged" /> When I need to add or delete records/objects, I manually do so from both the entity data model, and the ObservableCollection: private void DeletePerson(Person person) { entities.DeleteObject(person); entities.SaveChanges(); personOC.Remove(person); } I'm generally using StackPanel and DockPanel controls to position elements. Sometimes I'll use a Grid, but it seems hard to maintain: if you want to add a new row to the top of your grid, you have to touch every control directly hosted by the grid to tell it to use a new line. Uggh. (Microsoft has never really seemed to get the DRY concept.) I almost never use the VS WPF designer to add, modify or position controls. The WPF designer that comes with VS is sort of vaguely helpful to see what your form is going to look like, but even then, well, not really, especially if you're using data templates that aren't binding to data that's available at design time. If I need to edit my XAML, I take it like a man and do it manually. Most of my real code is in C# rather than XAML. As I've mentioned elsewhere, entirely aside from the fact that I'm not yet used to "thinking" in it, XAML strikes me as a clunky, ugly language, that also happens to come with poor designer and intellisense support, and that can't be debugged. Uggh. Consequently, whenever I can see clearly how to do something in C# code-behind that I can't easily see how to do in XAML, I do it in C#, with no apologies. There's been plenty written about how it's a good practice to almost never use code-behind in WPF page (say, for event-handling), but so far at least, that makes no sense to me whatsoever. Why should I do something in an ugly, clunky language with god-awful syntax, an astonishingly bad editor, and virtually no type safety, when I can use a nice, clean language like C# that has a world-class editor, near-perfect intellisense, and unparalleled type safety? So that's where I'm at. Any suggestions? Am I missing any big parts of this? Anything that I should really think about doing differently?

• WPF Binding Error reported when Binding appears to work fine

  I am trying to create a custom TabItem template/style in my WPF 4.0 application (using VS 2010 Pro RTM), but inspite of everything seeming to work correctly, I am noticing a binding error in the trace window. The resource dictionary XAML I use to style the TabItems of a TabControl is given in full here. (Just create a simple TabControl with several items and apply the given ResourceDictionary to test it out.) Specifically, the error is occurring due to the following line (discovered through trial and error testing, since Visual Studio isn't actually reporting it at design tim <TranslateTransform X="{Binding ActualWidth, ElementName=leftSideBorderPath}"/> The full error given in the trace (Ouput window) is the following: System.Windows.Data Error: 2 : Cannot find governing FrameworkElement or FrameworkContentElement for target element. BindingExpression:Path=ActualWidth; DataItem=null; target element is 'TranslateTransform' (HashCode=35345840); target property is 'X' (type 'Double') The error occurs on load and is repeated 5 times then (note that I have 3 tab items in my example). It also occurs consistently and repeatedly whenever for the Window is resized, for example - filling the Output window. Perhaps every time the TabItem layout is updated? And again, though it is not reported, the error very much seems to be due to the fact that I am binding to any element at all, not specifically leftSideBorderPath or the the ActualWidth propertry. For example, changing this line to the following fixes things. <TranslateTransform X="25"/> Unfortunately, hard-coding the value isn't really an option. This issue seems very strange to me in that the binding does appear to be giving the correct results. (Inspecting the X value of the TranslateTransform at runtime clearly shows the correct bound value, and the ClipGeometry when viewed is exactly what it hsould be.) Neither Visual Studio nor WPF seems to be giving me any more information on the cause of the error perhaps (setting PresentationTraceSources.TraceLevel to High doesn't help), yet the fact that things are working despite the error being reported inclines me to think that this is some fringe-case WPF bug. As a side note, the Visual Studio WPF designer and XAML editor are giving me a problem with the following line: <PathGeometry Figures="{Binding Source={StaticResource TabSideFillFigures}}"/> Although WPF (at runtime) is perfectly happy binding Figures to the TabSideFillFigures string, with the Binding enforcing the use of the TypeConverter, the XAML editor and WPF designer are complaining. All the XAML code for the ControlTemplate is underlined and I get the following errors in the Error List: Error 9 '{DependencyProperty.UnsetValue}' is not a valid value for the 'System.Windows.Controls.Control.Template' property on a Setter. C:\Users\Alex\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\Ircsil\devel\Ircsil\MainWindow.xaml 1 1 Ircsil Error 10 Object reference not set to an instance of an object. C:\Users\Alex\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\Ircsil\devel\Ircsil\Skins\Default\MainSkin.xaml 58 17 Ircsil Again, to repeat, everything works perfectly well at runtime, which is what makes this particularly odd... Could someone perhaps shed some light on these issues, in particular the first (which seems to be a potential WPF bug), and the latter (which seems to be a Visual Studio bug). Any sort of feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated!
