  I want to execute some sql scripts using Java's Runtime.exec method. I intend to invoke mysql.exe / mysql.sh and redirect the script file to this process. From the command prompt I can run the command <mysqInstallDir\/bin\mysql.exe -u <userName> -p <password> < scripts\create_tables.sql I can invoke mysql.exe using Runtime.exec but how do I redirect data from sql file to mysql.exe ?

After installing the GP10.0 while i run the GP Utility for server installation. In between installation i got the following error. I have a situation where a migration to change a column type worked on my local development machine by partially failed on the production server. My postgreSQL versions are different between local and production (7 on production, 8 on local) so I'm hoping by looking at the SQL generated on the successful migration locally I can work out a SQL statement to run on production to fix things....

  I'm looking for a .Net 3.5 ORM framework with a rather unusual set of requirements: I need to create and alter tables at runtime with schemas defined by my end-users. (Obviously, that wouldn't be strongly-typed; I'm looking for something like a DataTable there) I also want regular strongly-typed partial classes for rows in non-dynamic tables, with custom validation and other logic. (Like normal ORMs) I want to load the entire database (or some entire tables) once, and keep it in memory throughout the life of the (WinForms) GUI. (I have a shared SQL Server with a relatively slow connection) I also want regular LINQ support (like LINQ-to-SQL) for ASP.Net on the shared server (which has a fast connection to SQL Server) In addition to SQL Server, I also want to be able to use a single-file database that would support XCopy deployment (without installing SQL CE on the end-user's machine). (Probably Access or SQLite) Finally, it has to be free (unless it's OpenAccess) I'll probably have to write it myself, as I don't think there is an existing ORM that meets these requirements. However, I don't want to re-invent the wheel if there is one, hence this question. I'm using VS2010, but I don't know when my webhost (LFC) will upgrade to .Net 4.0

I've begun working with PostgreSQL and have run into a bit of a difference in that PGSQL requires any logic to be embedded in a function. Is there a way to execute PL/PGSQL code without creating an executing a function?

• PostGIS - can't create spatially-enabled database

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, PostgreSQL 9.0 and PostGIS 1.5. I've installed PostGIS 1.5 from: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugis/+archive/ubuntugis-unstable I used PPA first then the command: sudo apt-get install postgis to install postgis. I've been following these instructions to create a spatially-enabled database: http://ostgis.refractions.net/docs/ch02.html#id2630100 I got to the point where it's saying: Now load the PostGIS object and function definitions into your database by loading the postgis.sql definitions file (located in [prefix]/share/contrib as specified during the configuration step). psql -d [yourdatabase] -f postgis.sql Well, there is no postgis.sql on my server after the installation. I did an sudo updatedb to make sure I can find postgis.sql but it's not there. Any ideas? Thank you!

• What's the best way to read a UDT from a database with Java?

  I thought I knew everything about UDTs and JDBC until someone on SO pointed out some details of the Javadoc of java.sql.SQLInput and java.sql.SQLData JavaDoc to me. The essence of that hint was (from SQLInput): An input stream that contains a stream of values representing an instance of an SQL structured type or an SQL distinct type. This interface, used only for custom mapping, is used by the driver behind the scenes, and a programmer never directly invokes SQLInput methods. This is quite the opposite of what I am used to do (which is also used and stable in productive systems, when used with the Oracle JDBC driver): Implement SQLData and provide this implementation in a custom mapping to ResultSet.getObject(int index, Map mapping) The JDBC driver will then call-back on my custom type using the SQLData.readSQL(SQLInput stream, String typeName) method. I implement this method and read each field from the SQLInput stream. In the end, getObject() will return a correctly initialised instance of my SQLData implementation holding all data from the UDT. To me, this seems like the perfect way to implement such a custom mapping. Good reasons for going this way: I can use the standard API, instead of using vendor-specific classes such as oracle.sql.STRUCT, etc. I can generate source code from my UDTs, with appropriate getters/setters and other properties My questions: What do you think about my approach, implementing SQLData? Is it viable, even if the Javadoc states otherwise? What other ways of reading UDT's in Java do you know of? E.g. what does Spring do? what does Hibernate do? What does JPA do? What do you do? Addendum: UDT support and integration with stored procedures is one of the major features of jOOQ. jOOQ aims at hiding the more complex "JDBC facts" from client code, without hiding the underlying database architecture.   I've been successful in creating a simple trigger with a PHP script. The problem comes when I have to use "DELIMITER" in my trigger creating because I have nested if/then statements.   I am unable to access Sharepoint Central Administration. I installed MOSS 2007 successfully on Windows Server 2008 (IIS7 and SQL Server 2005), I launched the admin and got "Cannot connect to the configuration database" error. Application pool is using NetworkService account which has access to SQL Server. I can access the configuration databases through SQL Management Studio. SQL server is on the same machine. Any help, suggestions on how to solve the problem? I am very new to SharePoint.

• Hard to append a table with many records into another without generating duplicates

  I may seem to be a bit wordy at first but for the hope it will be easier for all of you to understand what I am doing in the first place. I have an uncommon but enjoyable activity of collecting as many species of wood from around the world as I can (over 2,900 so far). Ok, that is the real world. Meanwhile I have spent over 8 years compiling over 5.8 meg of text data on all the woods of the world. That got so large that learning some basic PHP and MySQL was most welcome so I could build a new database driven home for all this research. I am still slow at it but getting there. The original premise was to find evidence of as many species of woods in the world I can. The more names identified, the more successful the project. I have named the project TAXA for ease of conversation (short for Taxonomy). You are most welcome to take a look at what I have so far at www.prowebcanada.com/taxa. It is 95% dynamically driven. So far I am reporting about 6,500 botanical wood names and, as said above, the more I can report, the more successful is the project. I have a file of all the woods in the second largest wood collection in the world, the Tervuren wood collection in the Netherlands with over 11,300 wood names even after cleaning out all duplicates. That is almost twice the number I am reporting now so porting all the new wood names from Tervuren to the 'species' table where I keep the reported data would be a major desirable advancement in the project. At one point I was able to add all the Tervuren records to the species table but over 3,000 duplicates also formed. They were not in the Tervuren file in the first place but represent the same wood names common to both files. It is common sense that there would be woods common to both that when merged would create new duplicates. At one point and with the help of others from another forum, I may very well have finally got the proper SQL statement. When I ran it, though, the system said (semi-amusingly at first) ----- that it had gone away! After looking up on the Net what could have have done this, one reason is that the MySQL timeout lapses and probably because of the large size of files I am running. I am running this on a rented account on Godaddy so I cannot go about trying to adjust any config file. For safety, I copied the tervuren.sql file as tervuren_target.sql and the species.sql file as species_master.sql tp use as working files just to make sure I protect the original files from destruction or damage. Later I can name the species_master back to just species.sql once I am happy all worked well. The species file has about 18 columns in it but only 5 columns match the columns in the Tervuren file (name for name and collation also). The rest of the columns are just along for the ride, so to speak. The common key in both is the 'species_name" columns in both. I am not sure it is at all proper to call one a primary key and the other a foreign key since there really is no relational connection to them. One is just more data for the other and can disappear after, never to be referred to the working code in the application. I have been very surprised and flabbergasted on how hard it can be to append records from one large table into another (with same column names plus others) without generating NEW duplicates in the first place. Watch out thinking that a SELECT DISTINCT statement may do the job because absolutely NO records in the species table must get destroyed in the process and there is no way (well, that I know of) to tell the 'DISTINCT" command this. Yes, the original 'species' table has duplicates in it even before all this but, trust me ---- they have to be removed the long hard way manually record by record or I will lose precious information. It is more important to just make sure no NEW duplicates form through bringing in new names in the tervuren_target.species_name into species.species_name. I am hoping and thinking that a straight SQL solution should work --- except for that nasty timeout. How do I get past that? Could it mean that I may have to turn to a PHP plus SQL method?? Or ..... would I have to break up the Tervuren files into a few smaller ones and run them independently (hope not....)" So far, what seems should be easy has proven to be unexpectedly tricky. I appreciate any help you can give but start from the assumption that this may be harder to do right than it may seem on the surface. By the way --- I am running a quad 64 bit system with Windows 7, so at least I have some fairly hefty power on the client end. I have a direct ethernet cable feeding a cable connection to the Internet. Once I get an algorithm and code working for this, I also have many other lists to process that could make the 'species' table grow even more. It could be equivalent to (ahem) lighting a rocket under my project (especially compared to do this record by record manually)! This is my first time in this forum, so I do not know how I can receive any replies. Do I have to to come back here periodically or are replies emailed out also?
