  I can't get wireless to work on my computer. I have recently installed 12.04. Computer name: (Fujitsu siemens ESPRIMO Mobile u9200) Hardware button starts bluetooth - so can't start that way. Have searched the Internet for help but can't find any on my specific problem! • Not booting from USB or CD (SYSLINUX Message)

  I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get. SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al With the CD it will start booting it but somewhere loading it up, the dots turn all orange and stay that way and my CD drive turns quiet. Oh and some more info the images work because I tried loading them up on another pc and it worked just fine. I manage to get the CD to boot I just had to let me pc boot up first then insert the CD and have it boot the CD then. Once I get done installing ubuntu it works fine but I have to leave the PC on 24/7 for if I turn it off the PC will freeze 5-10 seconds after booting back up no matter how I install it.

• Computer science curriculum for non-CS major?

  Hi all, I would like to have some ideas for building up my foundation CS skills. I have started programming computers 10 years ago and have made a pretty good career out of it. However, I cannot stop thinking that the path that brought me here was very particular, and if something goes wrong (e.g. I get laid off) it would be harder to find a job here in the US on the same salary level, OR in a top company. The reason I say that is that I am a self-learner; my degree is not in Computer Science so although I master C/C++/Java, I do not have the formal CS and mathematical background that many other software developers (esp. here in the US) have. When I look at job interview questions from Apple, Google, Amazon, I have the impression that I'd flunk those technical interviews at some point. Don't get me wrong, I know my algorithms and data structures, but when things dive too deeply into the CS realm I am in trouble. What can I do to close the gap? I was thinking about a MSc in CS, but will I even UNDERSTAND what's going on there if I'm not a CS undergrad? Should I go back to basics and get a BSc in CS instead? I always tend to go into self-study mode when I want to learn new stuff, but I have the impression that I will need more formal education in CS if I want to have a shot at working at those kinds of companies. • Web Development Environment: How to distribute edited hosts files over bunch of mac machines?

  I am doing some research to prepare some web development environment for our small(10ppl and growing) new office. User Case: For each new web project usually we create new alias on an Apache server someproject.companywebsite From my understanding in order to see this website locally for all the rest of our team(including mangers and directors) they will need to edit hosts file (e.g. "192.168.1.10 someproject.companywebsite"), and like that each time for a new project(can be 2-5 each week) Solution: And I looking for a solution how to edit this hosts file only once and distribute it over all mac machines in our network at once or much more flawlessly than poking around with each machine every time over and over again. Is that possible? Or that a very wrong way of doing that? Perhaps we better set up own local dns server and point to it our router? Though own dns server a bit concerns me because of might be some network interruption and others lags, if you know what I mean. Or perhaps there are another workflows for that? What's the best way for such things? So I'll be so grateful to hear some advices from experienced admins. I couldn't find that info on internet, so if you know where to read about it, point me in a right direction. Thank you in advance Alex

• Difference between two kinds of Bing URL Referers

  Most of the referral URLS that I get from Bing have the following syntax: http://www.bing.com/search?q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] However I just noticed that maybe 10-20% of them are coming in like this: http://www.bing.com/url?source=search&[some other variables]&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com/user-landing-page-on-my-site&yrktarget=_top&q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] The first syntax gives me the keywords the user typed in, but the second actually gives me the keywords the user typed in and their landing page on my site. I was originally unaware of this second kind altogether because I have a customized referral report that filters out URLs containing my domain. But now that I noticed them I want to know why they occur to see if I can get more to occur this way because the second syntax contains more valuable information. If I go to one of the first URLs, it gives me a typical Bing query page. The second URLs seem to just redirect me to the Bing home page. I'm not sure if it has to do with the kind of search being performed (I also get a few http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q= referers) or some other metric. Does anyone know what causes some referral URLs from Bing to have the /search?q syntax and others to have the /url?source syntax? P.S. I have verified that I am getting both kinds of URLs from non-advertising clicks. P.P.S. I am not talking about data in Google Analytics or similar software but the raw $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] value coming from the client's original request.

• Current SPARC Architectures

  Different generations of SPARC processors implement different architectures. The architecture that the compiler targets is controlled implicitly by the -xtarget flag and explicitly by the -arch flag. If an application targets a recent architecture, then the compiler gets to play with all the instructions that the new architecture provides. The downside is that the application won't work on older processors that don't have the new instructions. So for developer's there is a trade-off between performance and portability. The way we have solved this in the compiler is to assume a "generic" architecture, and we've made this the default behaviour of the compiler. The only flag that doesn't make this assumption is -fast which tells the compiler to assume that the build machine is also the deployment machine - so the compiler can use all the instructions that the build machine provides. The -xtarget=generic flag tells the compiler explicitly to use this generic model. We work hard on making generic code work well across all processors. So in most cases this is a very good choice. It is also of interest to know what processors support the various architectures. The following Venn diagram attempts to show this: A textual description is as follows: The T1 and T2 processors, in addition to most other SPARC processors that were shipped in the last 10+ years supported V9b, or sparcvis2. The SPARC64 processors from Fujitsu, used in the M-series machines, added support for the floating point multiply accumulate instruction in the sparcfmaf architecture. Support for this instruction also appeared in the T3 - this is called sparcvis3 Later SPARC64 processors added the integer multiply accumulate instruction, this architecture is sparcima. Finally the T4 includes support for both the integer and floating point multiply accumulate instructions in the sparc4 architecture. So the conclusion should be: Floating point multiply accumulate is supported in both the T-series and M-series machines, so it should be a relatively safe bet to start using it. The T4 is a very good machine to deploy to because it supports all the current instruction sets.

• What is the difference between apt-get and dpkg?

  Both apt-get and dpkg can be used to install and remove packages. When to use which? Context: I'm in stuck in package limbo between 10.04.4 LTS and 12.04.1 LTS after an attempted upgrade via the package manager. For example, to fix things I wanted to remove "skype" so that things it depends on could be freed up. But "aptitude" (my normal package management tool) refused to remove it. The advice at http://administratosphere.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/rescuing-an-interrupted-ubuntu-upgrade/ seems helpful but not adequate to resolve my package conflicts. Also there's a strange thing where the grub menu seems not to be properly interpreted, but eventually I get the splash screen with "/ is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press S to skip or M to recover manually." Manual recovery puts me in a single user shell where I can easily remount / as rw and bring up the network. If I become myself, the command line seems quite robust, but, there seems to be no way to get X11 going.

When I enable fog, the model outline is still visible as many small black dots when it should be "in the fog". Why is this happening? • how to link a c++ object to a local variable in Lua

  I'm completing my scripting interface with Lua, but recently I've stuck at some point. I have several functions for my Entitiy events like Update(). I have a function called create_entitiy() which instantiate a new entity from a given entity index: function Update() local bullet = create_entity(0, 0, "obj_bullet") end create_entity returns a table which is the properties of the created entity. Now how can I make a connection between bullet variable and my newly created object? Right now for previously added objects to the scene, I simply set a global table for each of them and then after every call to Update(), I go through registered names to find object tables and perform new changes. Like the one below: function Update() if keyboard_key_press(vk_right) then obj_player.x += 3 end I can get obj_player table because I know its name from C++, plus I can get it as a global table and simply reach for the first instance named obj_player. Is there any solution for me to make bullet variable act like this? I was thinking to get all local variables in Update() function and check for every one to see if is it table and it has an unique field attached to it like id, this way I can determine that this is an object table and do the rest of the process. By the way, is this interface going to work easier with luaBind if I implement it? Bottom line: How can I make a local variable in Lua that receives a table from create_entity function and track that local variable to capture it from C++. e. g. function Update() local bullet = create_entity(0, 0, "obj_bullet") bullet.x = 10 <== Commit a change in table end Now I want to get variable bullet from C++. • MMORPG design for time-limited players

  I believe that there is a significant market of players who would enjoy the exploration and interaction aspects of MMORPGs, but simply don't have the time for the endless grinding marathons which are part of the average MMORPG. MMORPGs are all about interaction between players. But when different players have different amounts of time to invest into a game, those with less time to spend will soon lack behind their power-leveling friends and won't be able to interact with them anymore. One way to solve this would be to limit the progress a player can achieve per day, so that it simply doesn't make sense to play more than one or two hours a day. But even the busiest casual players sometimes like to spend a whole sunday afternoon playing a video game. Just stopping them after two hours would be really frustrating. It also creates a pressure to use the daily progress limit every day, because otherwise the player would feel like wasting something. This pressure would be detrimental for casual gamers. What else could be done to level the playing field between those players who play 40+ hours a week and those who can't play more than 10?

• Why is NDA so hard to understand?

  Maybe this concept is simpler for me because of all the jobs I've been on over the years requiring security clearances. I've signed quite a few NDA forms. Some for big companies, some for small, but the meaning of "NDA" remains constant: Non-Disclosure Agreement. To me, that takes no further explanation, but apparently it's confusing to some people, and I don't understand how you can be confused. The papers I signed with the U.S. Army in 1970 read "10 years and $10,000" for a violation... can't imagine what it's up to now, but THAT is a strict NDA :) So those things I've been told, I cannot talk about, period. Even if the entire world knows about them, I cannot speak about them until the information goes off NDA. An example was a Silverlight release a while back. It might have been Silverlight 3, I don't remember. Everyone was anxiously awaiting the release so they could post their material. Of course the entire world knew it was coming out and imminently so. Some enterprising folks had even found the bits on a server before the official announcement. So then the situation became: everyone knew about it, some were even coding with it and blogging about it and yet we couldn't talk about it. Scott Guthrie's posting about it opened the flood gates and then it went off NDA, but up until that moment, we were locked. Sitting out on the edge you're uninstalling and re-installing all the time and you get frustrated when things that used to work don't, but hey... those bits were still warm when you got 'em, and that's the fun. • Evaluating code for a graph [migrated]

  This is relatively long code. Please take a look at this code if you are still willing to do so. I will appreciate your feedback. I have spent two days trying to come up with code to represent a graph, calculating the shortest path using Dijkstra's algorithm. But I am not able to get the right result, even though the code runs without errors. The result is not correct and I am always getting 0. I have three classes: Vertex, Edge, and Graph. The Vertex class represents the nodes in the graph and it has id and carried (which carry the weight of the links connected to it while using Dijkstra's algorithm) and a vector of the ids belong to other nodes the path will go through before arriving to the node itself. This vector is named previous_nodes. The Edge class represents the edges in the graph and has two vertices (one in each side) and a width (the distance between the two vertices). The Graph class represents the graph. It has two vectors, where one is the vertices included in this graph, and the other is the edges included in the graph. Inside the class Graph, there is a method named shortest() that takes the sources node id and the destination and calculates the shortest path using Dijkstra's algorithm. I think that it is the most important part of the code. My theory about the code is that I will create two vectors, one for the vertices in the graph named vertices, and another vector named ver_out (it will include the vertices out of calculation in the graph). I will also have two vectors of type Edge, where one is named edges (for all the edges in the graph), and the other is named track (to temporarily contain the edges linked to the temporary source node in every round). After the calculation of every round, the vector track will be cleared. In main(), I've created five vertices and 10 edges to simulate a graph. The result of the shortest path supposedly is 4, but I am always getting 0. That means I have something wrong in my code. If you are interesting in helping me find my mistake and making the code work, please take a look. The way shortest work is as follow: at the beginning, all the edges will be included in the vector edges. We select the edges related to the source and put them in the vector track, then we iterate through track and add the width of every edge to the vertex (node) related to it (not the source vertex). After that, we clear track and remove the source vertex from the vector vertices and select a new source. Then we start over again and select the edges related to the new source, put them in track, iterate over edges in track, adding the weights to the corresponding vertices, then remove this vertex from the vector vertices. • How do I account for changed or forgotten tasks in an estimate?

  To handle task-level estimates and time reporting, I have been using (roughly) the technique that Steve McConnell describes in Chapter 10 of Software Estimation. Specifically, when the time comes for me to create task-level estimates (right before coding begins on a project), I determine the tasks at a fairly granular level so that, whenever possible, I have no tasks with a single-point, 50%-confidence estimate greater than four hours. That way, the task estimation process helps with constructing the software while helping me not to forget tasks during estimation. I come up with a range of hours possible for each task also, and using the statistical calculations that McConnell describes along with my historical accuracy data, I can generate estimates at other confidence levels when desired. I feel like this method has been working fairly well for me. We are required to put tasks and their estimates into TFS for tracking, so I use the estimates at the percentage of confidence I am told to use. I am unsure, however, what to do when I do forget a task, or I end up needing to do work that does not neatly fall within one of the tasks I estimated. Of course, trying to avoid this situation is best, but how do I account for forgotten/changed tasks? I want to have the best historical data I can to help me with future estimates, but right now, I basically am just calculating whether I made the 50%-confidence estimate and whether I made it inside the ranged estimate. I'll be happy to clarify what I'm asking if needed -- let me know what is unclear.

• ubuntu box just redisplaying login screen after update

  My Ubuntu 12.04 box has been working fine. A recent update may have messed something up. I normally run remote windows on it, and I noticed that my windows were failing to start up. I then tried logging into it directly from the GUI console, and I'm seeing that after I press enter on the (valid) password, the page just redisplays. It's not a password error, as that would give me an inline error. I see some messages appear and disappear quickly between the login screen going away and then redisplaying, but they go away too quickly to read. I was able to run the non-gui login, and I did an update and upgrade, and then rebooted, but it's doing the same thing. I have a Samba connection from my Windows box, and that's still working. If it matters, here's my uname output (somewhat elided): Linux ... 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux What can I do to troubleshoot this? • Centrino Wireless-N 1000 takes forever to connect and keeps asking for password

  A few days ago I started having this problem. When I tried to connect to any WiFi Connection it would stay connecting forever, and after a minute or so it would ask me for the password again. The strange thing is that this happened out of nowhere, I did not install any new drivers or anything like that. After this happened I decided to uninstall ubuntu and install it again ("inside windows") but the problem is still there. • At which point is a continuous integration server interesting?

  I've been reading a bit about CI servers like Jenkins and I'm wondering: at which point is it useful? Because surely for a tiny project where you'd have only 5 classes and 10 unit tests, there's no real need. Here we've got about 1500 unit tests and they pass (on old Core 2 Duo workstations) in about 90 seconds (because they're really testing "units" and hence are very fast). The rule we have is that we cannot commit code when a test fail. So each developers launches all his tests to prevent regression. Obviously, because all the developers always launch all the test we catch errors due to conflicting changes as soon as one developer pulls the change of another (when any). It's still not very clear to me: should I set up a CI server like Jenkins? What would it bring? Is it just useful for the speed gain? (not an issue in our case) Is it useful because old builds can be recreated? (but we can do this to with Mercurial, by checking out old revs) Basically I understand it can be useful but I fail to see exactly why. Any explanation taking into account the points I raised above would be most welcome.
