  I need to get my box up to par or android development, but cannot get ia32-libs to install for the life of me. Can anyone help? The error Android's tool gave me was Stopping ADB server failed (code -1) and after a bit of investigation I found that I needed to install the ia32-libs which from my understanding is a pain. • Unity-Animation parameters are not being set

  I have the following animation controller: with two parameters of walkingSpeed and Jump. I have the following code which should change the values: animator.SetFloat("walkingSpeed",0.9f); animator.SetBool("Jump",true); and animator is the correctly referenced animator object. However the values that the parameters are set to do not appear to change in the animator window, nor do they appear to impact what is happening on the screen. However they do seem to impact the values obtained when doing the following: animator.GetFloat("walkingSpeed"); The animator consists of the shown blend tree, which works correctly and is always active, however due to the values not being changed it does not blends, and always acts as if the value with which it blends (walkingSpeed is 0). What is going on?

• Is chess-like AI really inapplicable in turn-based strategy games?

  Obviously, trying to apply the min-max algorithm on the complete tree of moves works only for small games (I apologize to all chess enthusiasts, by "small" I do not mean "simplistic"). For typical turn-based strategy games where the board is often wider than 100 tiles and all pieces in a side can move simultaneously, the min-max algorithm is inapplicable. I was wondering if a partial min-max algorithm which limits itself to N board configurations at each depth couldn't be good enough? Using a genetic algorithm, it might be possible to find a number of board configurations that are good wrt to the evaluation function. Hopefully, these configurations might also be good wrt to long-term goals. I would be surprised if this hasn't been thought of before and tried. Has it? How does it work?

  I updated my installation of the sun-java6-jdk package today to version 6.24-1build0.10.10.1 after being prompted by the update manager. However this now causes some compilation failures so I'd like to revert back to the previous version that I had installed. I've tried using Synaptic but the 'Force Version' menu command is disabled. I've tried the following command to install the previous version sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk=6.22-0ubuntu1~10.10 But I'm not sure that I have the correct version: Reading package lists... • Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot

  After a software update for Ubuntu, my dual boot with Fedora will not show Fedora in the start menu. It just boots into Ubuntu and when I hold Shift and boot, it only has Ubuntu in the list. • Increase the size of a memory mapped file

  I am maintaning a memory mapped file to store my tree like datastructure. When I'm updating the datastructure ,I got this problem. The file is limited on it's size and can't be too long or too small. I have a methods like void mapfile_insert_record(RECORD* /* record*/); void mapfile_modify_record(RECORD* /* record*/); Both operations could lead to exceed the space which is free on memory file. How do I overcome this? What strategy I should use. calculate whether it requires to exceed the file as a pre-condition on both methods. Dynamically exceed it , for a example manage a timer and constantly polling file for it's free avaliable size and then automatically extend it. Any ideas or patterns to overcome this problem?

  I read a question in one book: Numbers are randomly generated and stored into an (expanding) array, How would you keep track of the median? There are two data structures can solve the problem. One is the balanced binary tree, the other is two heaps which keep trace of the biggest half and the smallest half of the elements. I think these two solutions has the same running time as O(n lg n), but I am not sure of my judgement. In your opinions, What is the best way to keep track of the median?

• Seeking a free Lint for C which programmers will *want* to use

  When I try to persuade others to Lint their code I always get excuses - too difficult to set up, too difficult to understand, false positives, etc (most of which translates to too lazy, too stupid or too afraid of new things). Is there any way that I can make Linting easier? We code in C using Netbeans. Can I incorporate Splint into Netbeans? I did find a Splint GUI which was quite good, but there was no way to lint a directory tree. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

• Why are the packages found with apt-get always horribly out of date?

  Whenever I use the package manager, it can only ever find really old versions of stuff. Example: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install postgresql The best it can do is version 8.4 (3 years out of date). Trying to get a later version, I get: $ sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.1 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package postgresql-9.1 I experience the same issue whenever I use the package manager, so I usually just download and build things from source.
